In a series of interviews, Experimental Game Team Lead Software Engineer Orlando Salvatore, Lead Producer Ray Bartos, and Associate Game Director detail the inspiration and inner workings of WoW's new 60-player Battle Royale Plunderstorm event!
Gamespot Interview - Inspiration
In the
interview with Gamespot
, the developers note that Plunderstorm was inspired by various battle royales, MOBAs, fighters, and RTS games including Blizzard's own Warcraft 3.
"When you think back to Warcraft 3, one thing that's super cool about Warcraft 3 was going around to the different camps and leveling your hero," Salvatore said. "And level 10 was a major point to get to…What's super cool is harkening back to that. It is a PvP game but there's also PvE elements. Leveling up gives you health, leveling up gives you more damage on your abilities, you can find better loot in different places on the map. You can go around and find these camps of monsters and help level up your character each game. It kind of harkens back to that."
Arathi Highlands wasn't Blizzard's first choice for Plunderstorm, but they wanted to return to a familiar old world zone. Arathi's history as a contested PvP zone helped narrow it down.
"We wanted this experience to have a familiar space in that sense so that players didn't feel with all the experimentation it wasn't too jarring in the sense of the playspace," Bartos said. "The playspace still kind of feels familiar, they still have a strong understanding of it, and then we layered the experimental effort on top."
New Spells and Abilities
It is also revealed that there are a total of 10 offensive and 10 utility spells for players to find and experiment with; each spell has four ranks which are upgraded by acquiring multiple copies of the lower-ranked versions.
"It's exciting to be able to take what WoW is so good at, which is that second-to-second combat, and really break the rules of what's there," Salvatore said. "That's one of the main reasons why you aren't playing as your main character. This is a unique experience, this is a very different experience, a class-less experience. This is more limited, but hopefully deep enough that players will find enough to talk about metas and talk about what strats they go with when they enter a match."
PCGamer Interview - Separate Servers
The
interview with PCGamer
reveals that the Plunderstorm event will take place entirely on a separate server, rather than queuing with your normal character. They also tease the possibility of carrying the event forward if it proves successful enough, suggesting players provide feedback via social media and the forums.
"We are really focused on trying to break the rules. We really want to give players something that's super exciting, especially experimental, before The War Within launches," Salvatore said, referring to WoW's next expansion due later this year. "Once that launches, the big focus is going to be on that expansion."
"If people are going to social media or creating forum posts about how excited they are about the abilities within Plunderstorm, this could totally be something that we look to bring to the game in the future."
Exclusive Rewards
There are two rewards exclusively for match winners (the last player standing): a tabard and eyepatch. All other rewards are available to everyone through Renown. Each Renown level takes 2,500 plunder, with most matches awarding ~500. Each match should last 5-8 minutes (as opposed to the 10-15 teased in the bluepost) and players can complete one quest per match, with no weekly limit. Although no end date is explicitly given, there are several mentions of a 6-week time frame, suggesting the game mode will end around the beginning of May.
"You don't need it do it all in one sitting," Salvatore said. "We don't want this to feel like you're required to play every single day for the six weeks that this is active."
The developers are expecting that casual players will require a couple of weeks of non-obsessive play to get all the rewards.
"This is a monumental undertaking for this experiment," Bartos said. "We are charting new ground."
Interview with WoWCast
In a video
interview with WoWCast
, Associate Game Director Jeremy Feasel notes that the core of the game is plundering. Just dropping into the map and completing the initial quest will get players most of the way toward earning rewards, without engaging in any PvP or actually being the last person standing.
Spectator Mode
Lead Engineer Orlando Salvatore confirms that duo and solo players will play in separate matches, to avoid the inherent imbalance of being able to coordinate with each other and revive downed partners. Players that die will transition to a spectating mode: duo's will watch their partner while waiting to be revived, while solo players and duos that can't be revived can spectate anyone on the map.
No Addon Support
Third-party addons are awesome and amazing, but they really want everyone to have the same experience, so addons will not be supported. The UI is slimmed down and streamlined for the new game mode, with a 7 button action bar. There aren't any bags to hold items, so loot in the form of new abilities get placed directly onto the bar without the need to open any new frames. It feels wildly different from normal World of Warcraft gameplay, even PvE mobs have an emphasis on dodging telegraphed abilities, while
all players can double jump and take no fall damage
.
It's also teased that higher ranked versions of the spells can be found outright, not only ranked up by acquiring multiple copies. The power curve may feel very different from match to match.
