Find your Path
Aiming for Pathfinder and flight will get you a long way through some reputation grinds and a lot of the content. Aiming for the Ahead of the Curve mount before it disappears is a great motivator and gives you an end goal in what is otherwise an open ended game. Be aware of content that everyone is queuing for now but won't be next expansion (like Island Expeditions) that will become much harder to essentially solo.
If you are gearing up and having fun a whole lot of Mounts and Pets will come your way without really trying. Generally, you can always revisit an expansion to fill out your collection later, but if you get more done now you'll find the challenge in groups less frustrating than the repeats on your own.

Be Social

Joining a Guild really is a case of having friends with benefits. There is a decent set of Pets and Mounts available from the vendor, and you will find it much easier to organise groups to help out with some of the trickier aspects of collecting. Social Groups and creating parties with proper descriptions is also a great way to get some help.

Become Professional

Almost all Professions now have Mounts available and all do have Pets. Besides the obvious choice in Engineering, you'll find Tailoring and Leatherworking also have Mounts with a professional requirement to use. Fishing and Archaeology rely on a lot of luck but are also your only avenue for certain Mounts too. Plus you can make some cool stuff and maybe a bit of coin.... Become Rich

Inflation in Azeroth is going through the roof! For everything up to Legion you'd need around 2 Million Gold, for everything just in Battle for Azeroth you can triple that and still find yourself short. Don't forget he Auction House is a short-cut to a plethora of Pets and quite a few Mounts as well. Any good collector is also a good gold spinner; find your niche and start making profit. Try to make some profit in real life as well, there are a lot of Mounts and Pets only available with your hard earned cash via the Blizzard store or TCG.

Enjoy the Holidays

Timewalking, Darkmoon Faire and Seasonal Holiday Events have a ton of rewards on offer and are always worth a visit. Keep an eye on your Calendar and try not to skip anything, waiting a year to get that one missing item is as frustrating as it gets. What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been indeed.

Revisit old Friends, Fight old Enemies

As much as Blizzard keeps piling on content, the old world is where the vast majority of your Mounts and Pets will be found, and most of these are from either Reputation or Drops. Enjoy one shotting enemies who would once kill you with a look. Reputation rewards are numerous, and unlike low chance drops have a guaranteed end point. A lot of Factions can take weeks of daily quests to finally reach Exalted though, so be prepared for the long haul. Running Raids, Dungeons and World Bosses for drops can also take weeks, months, years, depending on your luck. Find a few hours in Azeroth here and there and grind your way to your goals.

Split your Personality

Having Alts will massively boost your potential in farming old content, completing missions for gold or giving you some variety when raiding. The following are my collection team, between them (they also cover all professions) there is every option available:
A Human Paladin Engineer Tailor Angler Archaeologist Chef - Reputation gain boost, all three specs for current content, most mounts available on a single character, Crusader Aura.
A Dark Iron Dwarf Shaman - Mole Machine to a lot of Raids, faster movement within them, good burst and heals for certain achievements.
A Dark Iron Dwarf Mage - Unparalleled movement around the world and good ranged damage for fast lower level content.
A Tauren Druid - Fast movement in and out of instances, can use the Emerald Dreamway to get around the world, good for PvP and I need a cross faction "spy",
And then any other alts I am not actively playing right now I park on level appropriate rare spawn points or outside of raids and dungeons I still need to grind.

Battle Relentlessly

It is a World of War after all. PvP has a lot of Mounts on offer, some of the rarest in the game. For a change of pace Pet Battles and collecting Wild Pets is absolutely required to complete both Mount and Pet collections. Get out there and slaughter your way to success!

Achieve all that you can

The hardest things are also the most rewarding. The Dungeon, Raid, and collection meta rewards will give you something to keep striving for.

Reins of the Onyxian Drake took me about 40 weeks!

I got Deathcharger's Reins in a group :p

And both Amani Battle Bear and Reins of the Bronze Drake when they were hard

I probably still have multiple Disgusting Oozeling floating around bags and banks somewhere...

Almost 8 years to the day since A Week in Shattrath: Farming Outland Mounts and Pets and we've come back to the beginning again. Apologies for dragging these out so far apart, and thanks to Wowhead for collating them all into a chronological set. Looking forward to Legion, and tidying up The Littlest Mountain: A collector's overview of EVERY Mount and Pet in the game! ready for Shadowlands.

While you're at Adherent Hanjun, nearby is Old Whitenose to pick up the turtle mounts. Really helps with getting the Mountain o' Mounts achievement.

Am I missing the Horde version of this since this one is specifically Alliance based? Little hard for us Horde players to "follow along" when the entire top portion is Stormwind/Alliance only. At least put it in the title, dude. Wtf. This is 100% not a comprehensive guide if it caters only to Alliance.
