The mouth of the cave is at 74.23. The cave is straightforward, head to the back and use the Orb at the sparkly altar.

You do end up with a nice dialogue between Arthas and Muradin finding Frostmourne.

For those attempting the quest in the beta, as of build 8788 this quest cannot currently be completed, as the Frostmourne Altar is missing, which is required to use the scrying orb.

This has to be one of the most epic quests ingame. Frostmourne is pretty much the reason of all the scourge around the world, and I am sure they've keeled you at least once. Too bad I don't have a Beta Key.

The death knights which players play have abandonded the lich king and now fight against them, kinda like the forsaken did when they left the scourge.

Has anyone got any knowledge on the story behind Frostmourne and how Arthas came in possession of it? I read that he retrieved it from a solid block of ice, in Northrend, and that the Lich King could communicate to Arthas through it. I am wondering when the story was made up, cuz Steven Erikson tells a story almost identical to this one, in Reaper's Gale which was released a couple of years back.

Arthas runs away from the quest location at the end of the speech and my instinct was to follow him. If you do that you won't get quest credit. Stay where you are. Arthas just de-spawns before he gets out of the cave.

I went to Frostmourne Cavern as Horde, just because I'm a lore junky. To my surprise, a friendly gnome (PvP server) was turning in this quest, and was nice enough to let me watch the cut-scene. Awesome!

Again, I highly suggest visiting the cavern for both factions, just for the importance it holds.

How Arthas claimed Frostmourne:

In the Human Campaign of Warcraft III, Prince Arthas Menethil and Jaina Proudmoore are sent by Lord Uther the Lightbringer to investigate the source of plagued grain being distributed amongst the villagers.
They find out that a cult called the Cult of the Damned is responsible for the grain, and Arthas vows to track down and kill their leader, Kel'thuzad. He and Jaina do so, but before he dies, Kel'thuzad tells them that his death will 'mean little' and that his cult was being commanded by the Dreadlord, Mal'Ganis.

Skipping a few parts here - you can learn a lot more if you play the Caverns of Time: The Culling of Stratholme.

Arthas travels to Northrend, to Mal'Ganis' base of operations. There he meets up with his old friend Muradin Bronzebeard, who tells him about a powerful Runeblade named Frostmourne that his dwarves heard about. Arthas vows to help him find Frostmourne, which they find after killing the Guardian infront of the cave.
Heres a bit of a quote:
Muradin: Hold lad. There's an inscription on the dais. It's a warning. It says, "Whomsoever takes up this blade shall wield power eternal. Just as the blade rends flesh, so musst power scar the spirit." Oh, I should've known. The blade is cursed! Let's get the hell out of here!

Arthas ignores him, and releases the blade from the ice in which it is encased. As Frostmourne bursts free, one of the shards of ice hits Muradin, knocking him unconscious***. Arthas returned to his base and, using Frostmourne, killed Mal'Ganis, just as the Lich King planned.

Hence, Arthas became the first of the Lich King's Death Knights.

***SPOILER***
***In Warcraft 3 it is led to believe that Muradin is dead, but in Wrath of the Lich King it is revealed that he is simply knocked out and now suffers from amnesia. Don't know if this is a retcon, but if someone could post Muradin's new name that would be great. He was found by other dwarves, and now goes by the name Yorg Stormheart.

I was like Muridan lives! and i think in WC3 the reason why you dont see that part is you are folowing the story of Arthas thus you follow arthas and not stick around to see a body of muradan.

If you're having trouble with completing this quest, simply do not follow Arthas when he runs outside. I end up asking general chat and stuff on how to complete it.. Then did the dialogue again, seems you only complete it until you await Muradin's return as a ghost.

Also does anyone find it a little lame that Might of Menethil (The hammer that drops from Kel'Thuzad in the old Naxxramas) of which most people thought that it was Arthas' old mace which he threw a way got renamed and has new stats? It drops in the new Naxxramas on 10 man I think. Now it seems Arthas was simply using a crappy old Grand Marshal mace.. That made me shed some tears ^^

the questline in oshu'gun is somewhat different from the "real" lore on the area etc, but it is making the lore a little bit different so that it should fit the game better. allthough both of those storyline-quests are fun:)

Actually, Illidan actually being alive doesn't really contradict the lore, yes Arthas did cut into his chest, but only scarring him and weaking him enough to save his master. It was never said he died till Burning Crusade came out, it can be implied yes, but it was never proven.

To be perfectly fair, nothing actually said 'Muradin died'. It could have very well been thier intention from the beginning to have him survive. I just watched the original WC3 Cinematic, and there was no solid evidence showing Muradin death. Just other characters reactions and thier belief that he died. The writers actually do a good job of keeping the lore. Occasionally, they have to retcon stuff, but, that's life.

Okay my guess: Muradin survived yes. When you are going to fight The Lich King then he suddenly will apear in the fight and do anything so you can beat him (kinda like Maeiv).

No lore revision there, Gandalf the Grey did die during the timeline of The Fellowship of the Ring. Yes, he survived the fall, but as we learn in The Two Towers he died in the ensuing Battle of the Peak while casting down the Balrog. His spirit left his body on the peak of Zirakzigil, and much later he was “sent back” as Gandalf the White.

Arthas' soul was stolen by Frostmourne which made him a human without a soul. After he "returns" the blade, The Lich King, Ner'zul, uses his body as a host. Arthas doesn't even really exist anymore, he is Ner'zul in the body of Arthas. Therefore I believe that Arthas cannot be released, when Ner'zul dies (if he ever does) so will Arthas. The Lich King is simply Ner'zul, not a paladin/shaman/deathknight/human/undead/orc :P

I just noticed in the Frostmourne Cavern, if you notice the ground in the area where Frostmourne was, you can see Arthas' old weapon (At least it is the weapon he uses in the CoS, which is http://www.wowhead.com/?item=18867) and Muradin's weapons, the axe and the hammer.

To sum up the subject -
He's neither Undead or Human.
He really can't be classified because he started out as a human, never technically died but for all intents and purposes became undead, and then merged with the spirit of an undead Orc shaman.

I actually got this straight from WoW-Wiki upon searching the phrase "Frostmourne"

Frostmourne has the ability to drain life from its victims — and to drain the soul of anyone whom it connects to. The Lich King is capable of seeing through the eyes and hearing through the ears of anyone who wields Frostmourne; this ability cannot be stopped by any mortal means. The Lich King can communicate with the wielder at will telepathically, on any plane and at any distance. The Lich King uses this ability to try and corrupt the wielder over time. This has several effects. An individual who wields Frostmourne will not part with it willingly. Over time the person will go from good to neutral and finally to evil. A non-undead evil wielder will then become undead.

The Forsaken has got alot to do with Arthas, he's the one who created them(In some way), In the WC3 campaign when the Scourge(Arthas) invaded silvermoon to resurrect Kel'thuzard at the Sun well, he met the High elven Ranger General, Sylvanas Windrunner, he eventually killed her and resurrected her as a banshee. Years later when Illidan had merged with the skull of Gul'dan and had called the Naga from the sea, Illidan sat out to Destroy the Frozen Throne(Because of Kil'jaeden's promise of power), the Lich King started to weaken, causing him to loose control of his undead minions, including Sylvanas Windrunner, who broke free from the scourge along with a number of orther undeads who had regained their will, they named themselfs the Forsaken. So my point is, if Arthas had not resurrected Sylvanas she wouldent have created the Forsaken, and that way Arthas created them.

The game takes place over a period or several days not years.

It saddens me that they didn't do it exactly as in Warcraft III. I was expecting to see a chunk of ice fly into Muradin as Arthas shatters the ice around Frostmourne. Instead, you see Muradin just "die" when Arthas grabs the weapon, like if he was doing a "DOH!" when Arthas ignores what he says.
They could've put a little more effort in doing this right, since it's pretty lore-relevant.

HAH i know it all! well its true that arthas is not an undead, he is a human with no soul and a being without soul will eventually look corrupted. and to answer you questions about the arthas nerzhul thing, some of you mean that the lich king is part arthas part nezshul but no! they are a hole new guy its like a little party with Nerzhul, Arthas and a nameless guy and they all ended up killing each other and the nameless won the fight and then he eat the other 2 and that would be the Lich king! and in the Wotlk: Halls of Reflection the spirit of Uther the Lightbringer says something about the possibility that the only thing that is stopping the scorge from destroying the world of azeroth is the little good part of Arthas that is left in the lich king. and a little note of you are confused "Frostmourne" stole arthas soul when he picked up the blade his soul were still pure "in a way" when he recieved the blade and its that little part who dont want to destroy all life

Even weakened as he was, Arthas ultimately outmaneuvered Illidan and reached the Frozen Throne first. Using his runeblade, Frostmourne, Arthas shattered the Lich King's icy prison and thereby released Ner'zhul's enchanted helm and breastplate.

Arthas placed the unimaginably powerful helm on his head and became the new Lich King. Ner'zhul and Arthas' spirits fused into a single mighty being, just as Ner'zhul had always planned. Illidan and his troops were forced to flee back to Outland in disgrace, while Arthas became one of the most powerful entities the world had ever known.

Currently Arthas, the new and immortal Lich King, resides in Northrend; he is rumored to be rebuilding the citadel of Icecrown. His trusted lieutenant, Kel'Thuzad, commands the Scourge in the Plaguelands. Sylvanas and her rebel Forsaken hold only the Tirisfal Glades, a small portion of the war-torn kingdom.

I Just can't shake the feeling that Yogg'saron had quite a bit of influence in this cave, and that makes me wonder whether or not he had a hand in Arthas' decision to take up Frostmourne. Also, if my memory serves, in Warcraft III Frostmourne was guarded by 'Death Revenants'. Revenants are elementals, which were formerly controlled by the Old Gods, and Yogg Saron is the Old God of Death.

I have a lvl 80 Orc DK if i were to do a faction change(this toon has NEVER had a faction change) could i do this quest chain?I hope so never got to expeirence it.

That sword is devoured by the rage of the thousand souls ... It's the true weapon fulled with undead power.. i think it's good looking but don't know it looks little bit a small .. However that sword is one of the most epic Weapons which dates from Warcraft III : frozen throne... The second weapon are Ilidan's Blades .. But that is the best

make sure you don't have The Sacred and the Corrupt in your quest log when you try to do this quest or you will be sent into the instanced version of the cavern with the lich king fight.

I don't care about lore I just want to know why I can't get his hammer laying there on the floor all lonely looking. I wanna smash faces with it, even if it's no Frostmourne it still must be a good epic >_<

In regards to the quest itself -- its important that you remain at the shrine in order to complete the quest -- I made the mistake of following Arthas as he ran from the dialogue sequence in order to see if he did anything else and wasn't standing there when Muradin comes to.

The orb is still viable, however, and you can simply reuse to to start the dialogue sequence again. Once Muradin says, "Who... Who am I?" the quest completes.

EVERYTHING ABOVE IS ELITIST RUBBISH. There is not one comment on how to finish this quest, for n00bs like me. I have the orb, but how can I get down to the altar from the main cave at the same level as the cave-entrance? (Later) AARRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHH bloody Blizzard ! "battle your way to the bottom" RUBBISH, you cannot get to the bottom; a rock wall prevents it. They shoulda sed "battle yer way to the end of the first hall you enter". And even there, the altar is not obvious ! Just get to that green-glow prominence, and keep mincing around till the Orb works. Then stand still and listen to Arthas (the prique) and Muradin argue. GGGGRRRRRR

There is a long argument about if Arthas is undead or not, and so....

JUST TO SET THE FACTS:

Arthas is undead, and like most undead, his soul was taken by Frostmourn. He cut out his heart, and honestly, I never knew I could cut out my heart and still live. So, how could he still be alive and well if he has no heart? Unless Arthas has some sort of machine pumping his blood for him in his armor, kind of like Darth Vader, he can't be alive. It is quiet unlikely that he has this machine considering that the greatest gnomish and goblin engeneers have not gotten far in technology, as of today's standards (in real life).
Arthas and Nur'zhul merged into a single omega being, yes, but then Arthas killed Nur'zhul spirit in a dream after he aquired all he needed from Nur'zhul. Must I quote the book Arthas; Rise of the Lich King?

Arthas's Past?: "You understand, now. Despite all, Arthas, you have not abandoned me. There must be a reason. Arthas Menethil . . . much harm you have done, but there is goodness in you yet. If there was none . . . I would not exist, not even in your dreams. It doesn't have to be too late."

Arthas: "No, it doesn't. But it is."

Frostmourn descended. The boy cried out, his shocked, betrayed, anguished cry--that of the wind ranging outside--and for a moment Arthas saw him standing there, the blade burried in his
check almost as big as he was, and felt one final tremor of remorse as he met his own eyes.

Ner'zhul: "Yes! I knew you would make this choice. For so long you have wrestled with the last dregs of goodness, of humanity in you, but no longer. The boy held you back, and now you are free. We are one, Arthas. Together, we are the Lich King. No more Ner'zhul, no more Arthas--only this one glorious being. With my knolage, we can--"

His eyes bulged as the sword impaled him. Arthas stepped forward, plunging the glittering, hungeing Frostmourn ever deeper into the dreambeing that had once been Ner'zhul, then the Lich King, and was soon to be nothing, nothing at all. He slipped his other arm around the body, pressing his lips so close to the green ear that the gesture was almost intimate, as intimate as the act of taking a life always was and always would be.

Arthas: "No, no we. No one tells me what to do. I've got everything I need from you--now the power is mine and mine alone. Now there is only I. I am the Lich King. And I am ready."

Cho took me to... the Culling of Stratholme. I guess I have to find my way all the way back to goddamn Northrend. Really sick quests, Blizzard! You did a great job! This is the second Lorewalking in a row that has given me nothing but grief, I can't wait to do the others! I'm having so much fun my blood is about to boil!

Description

They have labeled the cave as Frostmourne Cavern. Why the Scarlet Onslaught is interested in such things is unknown, but by the look of things, the area surrounding the cave is heavily guarded. Nonetheless, we must proceed! Take this scrying orb and travel north out of town and then northwest toward Scarlet Point. Make your way into the cave and battle your way to the bottom. Once there, use the orb. Return here with what you discover.
