Netherwing faction hit?

Got this quest and noticed all of the mobs are on Netherwing faction, which I'm neutral to. If I flag up and kill one, will I lose rep with them?

Just a quick note: The quest ends at a 'Shrouded Figure' slightly northwest of the teleport pad. Took me a few seconds trying to activate the pad again to figure that out.

I killed 20 not one essence yet. You don't lose rep which is good. But I wonder if you can do the quest if your neutral?

Didn't lose rep while doing it, and the things dropped fine. I did have to tick the 'At War' box next to the Netherwing faction in order to kill them, though.

The drakes seem to have really high shadow resistance though, I did more damage dropping out of shadow form and using Smite.

Does these dragons have a very low respawn? Either server is lagging like crazy or they dont respawn at all :(

If you have already completed the Netherwing quest chain in Shadowmoon Valley (starts with http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=10804) you won't be able to attack the mobs unless you set "At War"

Anyone dared to try completing this quest after patch 2.1.0 at Neutral rep? Does it still not reduces your Netherwing reputation if you kill the dragons?

Okay, I got some more Netherwing reputation from the repeatable quests so that I got to 850/3000 Neutral. I went back to this quest in Celestial Ridge, Netherstorm, took a deep breath, set my reputation to "At war" and killed one of the big Nether dragons. When all the dust settled I got one more of the quest item (Nether Dragon Essence), and no reputation loss. So hereby I can confirm that as of now (24 May, 2007) after patch 2.1.0 you still do not loose Netherwing reputation by killing these things. However I guess when your Netherwing reputation reaches Friendly you can no longer set the "At war" flag, thereby you will not be able to kill these dragons for this quest. So do it while you are at Neutral or less with the Netherwing. Obviously all this might change in a later patch or some sneaked in hotfix, the above mentioned information is only stating the current state of things.

Confirmed that at Friendly or higher with the Netherwing, even though you can't go at war with the faction, this quest is doable provided you can do it with a friend. The easy way to do this is to team up with someone that is not doing the Netherwing rep (or has only done it to neutral and can go at war with them), set loot to Free-For-All, and have them do all the killing. Make sure you're the one to initially loot the body and you'll be able to loot the quest item. The trick is that the Nether Dragon Essences only show up for you when you're the first to loot the body (this held true with the Nether Dragon-related quest at Toshley's Station as well). We found that if the other player loots the body but does not take the Essence, and then the Friendly+ player goes to loot it it will not appear. Just make sure you loot first and you'll be set. Obviously you can do this with normal group loot as well if you're both doing the quest, it might just take longer if the other player finishes before you do.

Also, I can confirm that there was no rep loss from killing the Netherdrakes or Dragons.

The return isnt back at the spawn point. there is a shadow figure just to the north of the platform its hard to see because its behind the crystals and on the map any markings or waypoints may likely cover the dot.

The large dragons seem to have a lot higher droprate on them, they do however hit a little harder and use some Netherbreath on you for some 375dmg/second for a few seconds

The whole no rep loss thing is because several quests in outland require killing netherwing drakes and obviously these quests wouldnt be done if it screwed you over on rep.

Is it me, but as of 28 Feb 2008, I can't kill the dragons when I'm neutral? I tried to do this quest and it would not let me attack the Drakes nor the Dragons.

it appears that this quest line only gives you some xp and gold and a green item, unless you are trying to get cash or experience i would not recomend this quest line as only the first quest gives rep.

Yeh, don't try and turn this in at the teleport pad like I did for nearly 15 mins. There is a 'Shrouded" BE jus on the rise beside the teleporter, thats who u turn it in to. Look hard the figure is well shrouded.

kill the nether dragons when i killed them i got a 100% drop rate. it might not be like that for all thats just how it happened for me.

If you are spell DD, ensure that you have enough HP before starting a combat with any dragon because they resist alot. They resisted round 900 shadow dmg on almost every hit...

Side note: I have no rep with Nether drake I have never encountered them but I slaughtered these guys with no rep decrease of any kind.

EDIT: You can basically hang around the quest giver and get all your eggs. I didn't encounter one dragon the entire time.

Would just like to add that doing this at patch 3.0.2 (2008-10-20) while Friendly with Netherwing faction caused no reputation loss. As mentioned above, you do have to change your stance to At War with the Netherwing faction.

Just to confirm (as of patch 3.2.2)

NO rep loss with Netherwing for completing this quest.
I was 999/1000 exalted and remained so after completion.
Drop rate does seem to be 100%, regardless of whether you kill drakes or dragons.

You guys are a lifesaver. Never knew about the "At War" checkbox and I too am exalted with the Netherwing. Now I can finish some Aldor quests as well using the same method. The great thing is that even though you have "At War" checked, they still show as friendlies and will not attack, even when you're killing them. LOL Thanks a million.

Confirmed. I am Exalted with Nertherwing and was doing this quest for Consortium rep and the Netherstorm quest achievement. Set to At War, killed what I needed with no rep loss to Netherwing.

A work around fro the problem with the reputation. have someone hostile to the dragons do the killing and the rep locked person do the looting. It works normally even though the friendly character cant attack.

For Feral Druids: It also helps to get aggro on one with Hurricane, kite it to the next closest one, cast hurricane again on both of them, then thorns should be enough to finish them both off.

This is easy as a hunter. If you have rep with the nether dragons, click the 'at war' in your reputation screen. Now, with your pet out and growl on, shoot off an explosive trap under the dragon. He'll automatically attack you and your pet will protect you, gaining all the aggro since you cannot fight.

For hunters, place a trap underneath the drake's paws...you won't be able to shoot it and you will need to rely on your pet and trap to kill it.

For those of us exalted with the Netherwings, this quest can be a pain. I faced all the difficulties figuring this one out. Setting the rep to "at war" helped a little, but to really beat the challenge of being unable to target the drakes and dragons, you need to be a little creative with secondary attacks.

I am a level 85 tauren hunter working on my Loremaster achievements. I also happen to be top at engineering. The best way I found to get the drakes was a combination of throwing a bomb at them to get them to attack, and then setting down my snake trap and my explosive trap. The drake died as the two traps finished, and you can collect the essence. I'm afraid I don't have much in the way of advice for anyone lower than 85.

Also, an important engineers note. If you are 85 and an engineer, the Big Daddy bomb will one-shot the drakes.

If u are Exalted with the Netherwing faction. U cant target the drakes!
But set the reputation image "at war" use some AOE (Area Of Effect) spells. Rogues: Fan Of Knives and u can kill the drake. After loot it out.

Declare War with Netherwing (character/Reputation/The Burning Crusade/Netherwing)
AOE effects are the only thing that will work. Read here for AOE effects. The bug preventing fights have not been fixed.

As of 4.1.0, to use the item given to you, you don't have to kill the drakes/dragons. Use the device outside of their aggro range and you'll get the essence.
The drake/dragon will shrink and then disappear.

If you try to use it while fighting one, you'll get "You're in combat".
The use for this needs to be confirmed, but that's how it worked for my 69 Rogue, on Alexstrasza.

Ok I just did this quest at lvl85 on patch 4.1 and it works fine. I just had to figured out that you need to stand a little far from any drake and just hit the Essence Gatherer and you will get the Essence.

I did this quest at 85 for "Loremaster" when I was already exalted with netherwing and had no problems completing. Possibly the quest was changed slightly in patch 4.2 but I did not have to actually attack the dragons - instead you are provided with a "collector " type device. All I had to do was target the (friendly ) dragons and use the device - the dragon would shrink temporarily and carry on about its business without even noticing my presence. There was a problem with the last quest in the chain "Securing The Celestial Ridge" where I eventually had to set my status to "At War" to get Veraku to appear - but even killing him/her had no effect on my netherwing rep.

As of 5.0.5 - if you are exalted with Netherwing - you don't have to set "at war" to complete the quest. Just target the drakes, gather their essences and they simply disappear. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

The teleport was easy to find. Just look for the yellow marker, in the area with all the pretty crystals growing out of the ground. Click on teleport and npc appears. Do not kill the Nether Drakes, just target one and use the Essence Gatherer.

1. Getting Down to Business
• Accept the quest, Getting Down to Business, from Image of Wind Trader Marid (summon him first by clicking on the Ethereal Teleport Pad, and selecting the dialogue text which follows) at coords 71.2, 39.0 (Celestial Ridge).
• Go to your character's reputation to ensure that you are not Neutral or higher reputation with the Netherwing faction. If you are, click Netherwing and check the box "At War."
• Locate a Nether Drake, in the Celestial Ridge area, target it, and click the Essence Gatherer you were provided. Rinse and repeat to collect 8 total Netherwing Essences.
• Travel back to coords 70.8, 38.8.
• Turn in the quest to the Shrouded Figure.

If you're like me and tried clicking on the portal a zillion times only to get the message that the portal isn't operational anymore, the quest is turned in to the Shrouded Figure, who is hiding behind some large crystals not too far from the unusable portal.

Description

As you've no doubt seen, the area is teeming with nether dragons in various stages of growth. All nether dragons, young and old, contain an essence that's highly desired by K -- err, by a client of mine.

Most people aren't willing to risk their lives to gather it, so we've got the place to ourselves. You can start by gathering the essence from any of the creatures out here, but it's imperative that we start building a supply right away. Return to me once you have the first batch.
