It does indeed seem that lower level players will have a hard time aiming for this achievement due to hats not dropping off any boss under 70. Although there's always the extremely slim chance to get it as world drop...

Complete the Winter Veil quests, and you will get it in your mail within a couple of hours. A Gift wrapped box from our old great father winter, got some tea and some smelly cheese, and the fruit cake.

As for the winter hat, just kill the cloning b*tch in nexus, just run left in the beginning and push to the inner wall in the freezer room, kill of the initiate in the 4man pack first, and cc as much as your class can, its win. the boss itself is piece of cake, with some pots and well fed.

The boots and clothes for this achievement are *not* BoP. So if you have a friend who has the hat, but not the clothing, you can lend him your set and let him get it, then pass it back. The hat, unfortunately, *is* BoP, so people will still have to work on getting that.

Any 3 pieces will grant the set bonus so you should get credit regardless of the colours.

I'm having the same problem. I was wearing three pieces and ate the fruitcake and did not get the achievement. The clothing was at maximum durability. I was mounted at the time. I dismounted, ate the second piece, and got the achievement. Don't know if that had anything to do with it or if it's just buggy.

100% Drop Rate for Grand Magus Telestra during Normal difficulty. Used CaspianRoach's post to bypass all the frozen mobs and Two-man'd the 2nd boss as a Balance Druid (1800sp) healing and an Enhancement Shaman (3250ap) tank.

You can solo Grand Magus Telestra and all the trash up to her as an aff/felguard warlock on Normal difficulty.

Keep in mind:
1. The frozen swath of enemies is entirely avoidable as long as you don't get close to them and your pet can aggro them if you aren't careful so dismiss it.

2. The mage hunter dogs are both banishable and enslavable. Pull with enslave, banish one, and tank the humanoid with the dog.

3. The pack before Telestra is much harder then the boss, i couldn't manage to kill the whole pack in one go BUT i did manage to tank the four mobs until i killed a steward (and then promptly died)

This pack will try to sheep you as well, make sure you have a trinket on because they can kill your voidwalker within the 5 second sheep if you aren't careful.

4. When the boss does split you can fear one split, tank one with a felguard, and tank the other one by yourself. She does mostly spell based attacks so any level 80 should be getting alot of resists.

prety easy soloable as enh shaman 80lvl in nexus normal, boss dont hit to hard, use wolfs when she splits, bigest problems are with ads before boss but if you have a bit time to waste you can do all with 3 or 4 wolfs cd :) so 20 mins to solo get hat :)

Despite what is said here, you will NOT necessarily get the package with 20 fruitcakes after completing all the quests. I ate the one I did get while wearing the outfit, but it didn't complete presumably because my hat was from last year and it had 0 durability. Instead of getting more cake, I got another winter veil disguise kit.

I put in a ticket to talk to a GM...I cannot remember any other way to get the item needed for this acheivment...maybe on christmas day more spawn under the tree.

I just wanted to add that if you got your fruitcake before you got your set of clothes and ate it (like I did) - don't panic and think you'll have to wait till next year. You get another gift in the mail approximatly 2-3 days after doing the Metzen quest. In the letter from Kaymard Copperpinch you get another 20 x Graccu's Mince Meat Fruitcake- more than enough to complete this achievement. So you can relax and focus on getting the rest of the the achievements for your Merrymaker title this year. This is for Horde but I'm sure Alliance don't get short changed with this either.

PS I did speak to a GM about my fruitcake mishap and basically what he told me was "Too bad - better luck next year"..

I soloed (Holy Paladin) Grand Magus Telestra on normal to get this achievement done. Not that hard but I suggest you get a friend since it will take a while. I few tips and notes to help others:

-Keep Sacred Shield up.
-Keep your health up, especially against Telestra in phase 2, they can chain cc to death.
-Use Divine Plea when it comes off CD.
-Use Holy Shock and judgements to dps.
-Generally just play defensively...

Just wanted to drop a line and say that the Red Hat from Nexus is soloable by Death Knights. Did it with Unholy PvP spec, but maybe it's also doable with Blood. Have serious doubts about frost.

The pat inside the boss room is a bit harsh if you do it like me and decide to clear, not wanting to let a bad throw to aggro the mobs for you. The strat I used was to Mark of Blood the Stewart, then nuke the initiates, then the stewart, then the ascendant. Took me two round trips, only killing one initiate the first try. Just remember to use Bone Shield, pet, Frost Presence and spam Death Strike like there's no tomorrow. Oh, and if you see that you're going to wipe, just start spamming 8 to explode your ghoul. It's Unholy 101, but hey... you never know.

The boss herself is actually easier than the pack, imo. During p1 just do a normal disease + DS cycle and DeathCoil/RuneStrike if you can. Do one or two Mind Freezes if your health starts getting lower, save your cooldowns for p2.

On p2, target one of the images, cast Mark of Blood and forget about her. If she starts casting something nasty, just Strangulate that image and resume nuking one of the images. It's good to save up 100 Runic Power for this phase, as you can now call your Gargoyle (if specced for it) for some nice burst damage. Also, AMZ does ABSOLUTE WONDERS in this part. If all goes well, they should go down pretty easily. Phase 3 is a cakewalk afterwards.

I have confirmed that this hat does not drop off the Captain Skarloc in Old Durnholde or Prince Tortheldrin in Dire Maul unless it is anything other than 100% drop rate and I have bad luck. I can only assume that with the release of WotLK that it no longer drops from anything other than WotLK bosses.

Why do they have to go and make this quest harder each year?

2006 you could get it off any old mob in Azeroth plus 100% drops off certain instance mobs.

2007 you could get it off of Outland mobs plus 100% off of Azeroth instance mobs and Outland instance mobs.

2008 there are only 3 instance mobs that I know of that drop the hat and I cannot seem to find a group that will either stick together long enough to get inside the instance or to get far enough inside before someone has to leave.

Its %^&*ing me off that they have an achievement quest for the holidays like this that is making the whole holiday achievement seem like more of a chore than something enjoyable to do.

IMO they could at least make it so that when you do kill the instance mob that drops the hat, that everyone in the party gets it, or make it similar to the SM boss we had to kill at Halloween where everyone got the quest to kill the boss and it was a random drop in a lower level instance.

Not a 100% chance drop of 1 item when 5 people in the group needs it and the group doesnt want to farm the same mob 5 times so you are just unlucky never winning the roll on the hat.

And since the Halloween mob was in SM which was just outside of the horde home territory why not make the Winter Veil mob in Gnomeregan or something so the horde have to see what it feels like running thru our home territory and get honor farmed.

My horde banker has the green clothes and boots that I got off the AH, I was wondering if they are usable with the red hat? In other words - is it posible to get the achievement with any combination of clothes or do they have to match?

Got this achievement this morning. Grand Magus Telestra did not drop the hat in regular mode. I had to defeat her in Heroic mode for the red hat to drop. Wasn't too much trouble with my 85 MM hunter :)

Winter Veil 2010:

I ran into The Nexus on my 85 hunter to get the off Grand Magus Telestra. After defeating her I was sad to see it didn't drop. I realized I was in the normal version of the dungeon, so I ran back out and changed it to heroic. I also had a friend join party from Stormwind. I'm not sure if it requires being in a party, but since you get locked to it for a day after downing a boss, I didn't want to chance it.

This worked and I was able to loot the hat (Camouflage + Pet Tank = really easy to solo). I just wanted to post an update because several comments say this drops in both normal and heroic, which was not the case for me. Make sure you change the difficulty before you get all the way up to the boss!

Very true, I JUST did this on Heroic mode, and grand Magus Telestra dropped the hat first try. That makes a happy shaman! Soloable, but you need to be a little crafty even at 84 :)

Seems to be a lot of confusion about the hats this year (post Cataclysm 2010).
Here is my experience, disregard the "dates" in the Blizzard statement everyone is throwing around, as it seems to be inaccurate.

Northrend Dungeons:

Heroic: 100% DROP!
Normal: 0% - 3% Approximate DROP!
Jedoga Shadowseeker in Ahn'Kahet: The Old Kingdom: Red Winter Hat
Heroic: 100% DROP!
Normal: 0% - 3% Approximate DROP!
Mage-Lord Urom in The Oculus: Green Winter Hat
Heroic: 100% DROP!
Normal: 0% - 3% Approximate DROP!

Cataclysm Dungeons:
Lord Godfrey in Shadowfang Keep: Green Winter Hat
Heroic: 100% DROP!
Normal: 3% - 14% Approximate DROP!

As always your mileage may vary as far as the NORMAL MODE drops are concerned, all in all if your REALLY want the hat, run a heroic.
There is of course always the slight less than 1% chance you can loot either of these hats off of any HUMANOID mob in the game.
Don't count on it however.

Please be mindful that Wowhead receives it's data from it's users, so the loot tables of the for-mentioned Bosses can be, and probably are inaccurate to some degree just from not many people looting the hats and uploading the data.
Also, the bosses get looted thousands of times when the holiday even is NOT going on, so if the hat appears on the loot table, the drop percentage is likely horribly inaccurate as well.

Come level 85 in patch 4.0.3, it's possible for most classes to solo Telestra heroic. The only problem is actually getting to her, with the commander in the hallway and plenty of mobs before her. I did it as an 85 Assassination Rogue (yes, I stealthed by whoever I could). As a rogue, you'll encounter just a few problems:

-Mobs that can see you, even when stealthed (Azure Magus and those dog mobs)

-Four-piece mob in Telestra's room
For the stealth-seers, simple tank and spank. Maybe pop Combat Readiness and Recuperate when needed.

For the mob, pop whatever defensive CDs you have, and just tank and spank them at the entrance.

For Telestra, the only main concern is the splits. Since you are soloing, get Recuperate up as soon as possible. If you took points into Improved Recuperate (Combat tree), the damage mitigation and improved healing is incredible. Do NOT Kick her normal form. She'll hit you physically for more damage than her Firebombs. Don't know how she pulls that off, but okay.

When she splits, try and drop Arcane first. Despite Fire doing more damage and Frost having the AoE, Arcane polymorphs and Time Stops you. Those interrupts cause you to take more damage than you need to. Keep Recuperate up as often as you can, but don't sacrifice Slice and Dice for it (unless you're near death.)

After each split, but before the merge, bandage yourself. Heavy Embersilk Bandages work like a charm here. She'll throw you around a lot, so use that time to recover a bit with Recuperate, and time your attacks well enough on her to cause some damage and keep your poison stacks up.

Second split, same strategy. If your health is high enough, you'll have no issues here. Rogues have defensive CDs for a reason. Use them when needed.

She will attempt to do a third split near the end of the fight. PREVENT THIS AT ALL COSTS! By this time, you're probably sick of her, and have taken a lot of damage. Get her down ASAP. Cold Blood, Blade Flurry, etc...do whatever you have to do to get her down. I got her down solo in 3:02, two splits.

Heroic: Nexus - Grand Magus Telestra still drops the winter hat. Haven't been able to test the heroics of the other 2 dungeons ( Occulus & Old Kingdom ) yet, but none of the 3 have drops in Regular mode.

FYI - Can still use the Dungeon Finder to queue for Heroic Nexus until you hit 82. The other 2 can be queued Heroics until you ding 83.

This achievement is absolutely stupid to be part of the meta-achievement.

I've run all three Heroics every day since Winter Veil started, and I lose the roll on the freaking hat every time. The Random Number Generator shouldn't be part of achievements. It screws over too many people who have actually put forth the effort to achieve something.

So now, assuming my horrible luck continues, I get to wait another year to get the Proto-Drake. Blizzard can suck it.

For 2011, it looks like the Normal mode Northrend bosses no longer drop the Winter Hats. I just went through normal mode Old Kingdom and Nexus and neither Jedonga or Telestra dropped hats. I did a quick run through Heroic mode Nexus and saw that Telestra was wearing the hat, though I didn't bother to kill her.

My guess is Blizzard didn't want obtaining these hats to be too trivial. Players in 2010 experienced some challenge in getting the hats, it's only fair for the same to be true for 2011.

Edit: I just remembered that the hats didn't drop on Normal mode WotLK dungeons in 2010, but they did in 08 and 09.

Confirmed. Solo'd Heroic Nexus as lvl 85 Feral bear. Grand Magus Telestra dropped hat. You can tell if she will have it because she's wearing it when you see her. I'm sure it will be a 100% drop.

Something to keep in mind after patch 4.3 - if you are using Winter Clothing that was made before the patch, it has Durability newly added, and is broken by default at that. I didn't repair mine before donning the gear set and eating the Graccu's Mince Meat Fruitcake I'd gotten in the mail (from Treats for Greatfather Winter), and as such my achievement didn't ping.

It also seems this year that after freeing Metzen through You're a Mean One..., you only get the Winter Veil Disguise Kit in the mail later, no extra 20x Fruitcakes.

Feel free to reply to this if you've found a way (other than farming the world drop from random mobs) for characters lower than 77 to obtain a hat this year, as it currently does not seem possible. 77 is the level requirement for Normal BRC, while other Cataclysm dungeons and Heroic Northrend dungeons require an equal or higher level. I just tried a bunch of different things to get this on my level 70, and it doesn't appear that it's possible to reliably farm it, even with a level 85 helping.

Before equipping your 3 pieces of winter clothes for 'Tis the Season - check their durability as you will NOT get the achievement if they are at zero durability. A default durability, set at zero, was added in patch 4.3 even on items sitting unused in the bank. Father Winter will send you 1 piece of Graccu’s Mince Meat Fruitcake after completing Winter Treats (NOT a daily) which is the only sure way of getting the fruitcake in 2011. You may get fruitcake once you complete the You're a Mean One daily - if so, this is random with other drops just as likely. If, like me, you finally got your winter hat, grab your coat & boots out of the bank, equip & eat your one piece of fruitcake before you realize you need to repair your winter clothing - then put in a ticket to Bliz at once - as once they answer the ticket they will send fruitcake in the mail. Hopefully this will before this year's Winter Veil is finished!

This year the quest required to get your 格拉庫的肉餡水果蛋糕 is 招待冬天爺爺 for the Horde, 招待冬天爺爺 for the Alliance. The only slightly difficult part of completing the quest is farming/buying the 小蛋, the 冰牛奶 and other required items (including the cooking recipe) for the 薑餅 can be bought from local/holiday vendors. The package containing your fruitcake (along with a few other boring items) will come within 24 hours of completion.

After that, you can complete your 冬季服裝 by getting the clothes made by a tailor (The Horde will have easy access to 綠色冬裝, and the Alliance will have easy access to 紅色冬裝, but it shouldn't be too hard to find the color of your choice, the patterns for both are sold by neutral vendors, but the vendors are still in the middle of faction cities). The 冬靴 will be made by a leatherworker. For solo players, the easiest way to get the a hat would be 大魔導師特雷斯翠 for the 紅色冬帽, or 法師領主厄隆 for the 綠色冬帽, both on heroic (They do also have a low drop rate on normal mode supposedly), your hat does not have to match your clothes. The hats do also drop off a select few current bosses as well, along with a VERY low drop chance from any humanoid/undead mob.

Confirmed for 2012 - you can get the hat off 大魔導師特雷斯翠 in the nexus dungeon, HEROIC version. Easily solo for a lvl 90.

You can do this AV with an alt (pretty easy because 2/3 clothings aren't BoP) and get credit for the meta on your main.

I just ran this on my 90 hunter and I can confirm that as of 5.1, the 紅色冬帽 does drop from 大魔導師特雷斯翠 in The Nexus on Heroic. Second boss in, nice easy way to get it for those of you hunting for the Hat. :)

Quick guide on how to complete this achievement in case anybody is having difficulty:

First, you must be wearing the following items, which are part of the item set 冬季服裝:

紅色冬帽 or 綠色冬帽

Found from various instance bosses (more likely) and some world drops. Binds on pickup!

紅色冬裝 or 綠色冬裝

Crafted by a tailor of at least level 250. Does not bind to character!

冬靴

Crafted by a leatherworker of at least level 285. Does not bind to character!

To complete the achievement, simply eat a 格拉庫的肉餡水果蛋糕. These can be obtained through a Winter Veil present. Make sure the durability of the Winter Garb clothing is not 0 or you might not get credit!

Hey guys! We have some awesome news for this year's Winter Veil. We recently received a letter from Graccu himself, explaining us some changes he decided to introduce this year to make everyone's life easier. We thought you would enjoy the read:

"Graccu sad of making people sad. Graccu want people happy. Graccu want people enjoy Fruitcake. Graccu make more this year. Graccu now extend distribution chain to include retail market through Smokeywood Pastures. Graccu put Fruitcake in Stolen Presents too. Graccu want people happy. Graccu out."

So this year, for all your joy and happiness, 格拉庫的肉餡水果蛋糕 will be much easier to obtain. You can buy it from 凱瑪德‧考伯賓奇 or 梅希‧叮叮袋 for 99 gold 99 copper. Additionally, you'll also be able to obtain one Graccu's Minced Meat Fruitcake each day from 失竊的禮物!

You have to be wearing the uncommon versions of the clothes to get the achievement. If you're wearing the common versions it won't work.

Keep in mind that, apparently, the 剪裁精良的綠色節日帽 and the 剪裁精良的紅色節日帽, added in 2016, do not count toward this achievement. You must have the three piece set bonus shown in the tooltips in order to get this achievement.

I think some people were having the trouble I did. If you have an older winter clothing or boots, that have the white, and not the green writing, they won't work for the achievement. I just now got a cap. The boots I bought awhile back. I bought a new pair, and the achievement worked.

I went back to pick this one up, so I got both green and red hats from bosses (Shadowfang and Nexus) but could not complete. Finally realized all three items need to be "Green Quality" (and will show you have three of them equipped). I had some older clothes and boots (white quality) so once I updated to green quality ones I could complete this event.

2. Join Battle ( press I -> PVP -> Quick Match -> Specific BG -> Pick Isle of Conquest or Battle for Wintergrasp They are best to do it fast. Be care if you die you lose buff and you need to pick it up one more time.
3. Earn 50 honorable kills. Stay on back that will make it faster :).

Honestly, the easiest way (if you are high enough level to do so; I was on my level 52 hunter) is to just solo deadmines on heroic. I did it once and the Admiral dropped the red winter hat for me. :)

In case anyone was wondering, you do not get the buff from transmogging these items, you need to physically put them on. So the fact that you added it to your collection is great, but it doesn't give you the buff required for the achievement.

As I do with World Events... I've made an AddOn, which I uploaded to Curse, and it gives a ton of information about completing this World Event.

If you do care to download then I hope that you found it useful. Players unfamiliar with the layout of opposing capital cities will especially like my BB King information.

If you are collecting items for this achievement for the first time in 2022 (or thereafter unless otherwise changed), and have yet to learn the appearance, make sure not to right click the items from your bags as you typically do to equip items. If you do, they will be consumed upon use, and you will have to obtain another set of these items to equip for the achievement.

If you left click the item from your bag to pick it up and place it on the corresponding character slot on your Character Info pane, you can equip cosmetic items without consuming them. However, it will not learn the appearance until you consume it, which you can do once you're done.

(Reposted from a similar comment I made on the fire festival "burning hot pole" achievement, as it is relevant, and I noticed another user on the wow forums had trouble with this. If you have any trouble with this method, let me know. I already had this achievement prior to this year and haven't tested this method first hand for this particular one.)

Urrrrrrghhh. okay. I spent almost 50k on cosmetic items which... don't get sodding scammed like the idiot I am.

Do Not Right Click And Equip!
This will not give you the Set Bonus which is required for the achievement

DO NOT BUY THESE:
All of these items are WHITE text. meaning they are Common Quality and do not count towards the achievement.
Red Winter Clothes
Green Winter Clothes
Winter Boots

BUY THESE:
All of these items have GREEN Text, meaning they are Uncommon Quality and count. Make sure you check that they have the set Bonus Full Winter Garb
Red Winter Clothes
Green Winter Clothes
Winter Boots

The hats Green Winter Hat and Red Winter Hat drop from several generic mobs in the world as well as spcific dungeon bosses from old content. Look in the links to see if there is a boss or mob that you feel is quick to farm. Shadowfang Keep is quite close to the Daily Mob for example

As an FYI, I tried to complete this portion on my level 33 Earthen Shaman because I had been doing TWing & already had a hat. After buying the other two pieces from the AH (because I'm lazy) I tried to eat the Graccu's Mince Meat Fruitcake to complete the achievement but received the error below:

"Earthen cannot consume traditional food or drink."

As such, I'm guessing that this achievement cannot be completed by an Earthen, which hopefully is just an oversight. I submitted a ticket as a bug report but I'm sure nothing will come of it. Just a cautionary tale for others.

Earthen cannot currently earn the achievement 'Tis the Season because they cannot consume food, so you don't need to bother gathering the clothing items.
