Actually it wasnt too bad, each of them had a different ability

Varedis: Flame Wave, fire dot on the ground
Theras: Spell Reflect
Alandien: Shadowfury, about 10 yard radius aoe knockback+damage
Netharel: (sorry cant remember, dont think anything significant though)

I'm also pretty sure all of them had a random target Mana Burn spell, Evasion, and Metamorphosis. (but the book only works on Varedis' Metamorphosis spell)

Varedis has the most HP out of all of them so he will be the toughest to fight. I'd recommend fighting him first, and if your group can kill him then the other guys will be a breeze.

This quest is actually easier than it sounds, 3 of the 4 elites you need to kill is quite easy and will go down quickly.

The only one a bit hard is Varedis himself, im sure this can be 3 manned with the right classes.

I thought I would add my group's experience doing this quest, in case someone might find it useful. Our group make up was hunter, rogue, mage, and druid tank (me). You might notice we are lacking a dedicated healer.

As people have already mentioned, three of the four elites are not very tough. They aren't anything special. The only one that was problematic was Varedis himself.

If you have dps, a druid tank, but no healer, then what you can do is clear out the staircase that leads up to Varedis. When your druid tank gets around half or so health, he jumps straight down next to the foot of the staircase, and that should give him enough time to heal himself.

Then just catch him back on the staircase and bring him back upstairs.

Repeat if necessary.

Oh, and don't forget to use the book of fel names.

Possible to solo this entire quest as a hunter.

You must take advantage of the railing on the stairs that is between Alandien and Varedis. The key feature of it is the rocky formations at one end of it that allows mobs to run up onto the railing structure and the downward stairs at the opposite end of the rocky part. When you get the demon hunter near the railing with that feature it is possible to kite them back and forth by jumping onto the rail and then down, making the demon hunter run all the way around to reach you.
Basicly, the stairs that lead towards Varedis from Alandien has a railing that holds three braziers, has an end where mobs can walk onto it and another, downward stair case where you can jump up onto it and thanks to pathing limitations mobs must run around.

Alandien is the easiest as the railing I used is right above her, just shoot her and shes basicly in position.

Netharel is out of reach of this and I happened to luck out when there was a bunch of farmers to the point where I could simply just kite him out the front of the ruins.

Varedis and Theras can be reached by clearing a path towards the railing you use and kiting them to it.

For Varedis it was really tricky as near 50% he becomes invulnerable until the book is used on him, which has like an 10 second cast. To over come this I almost let him catch up to me on the bottom, jumped up onto the ledge and used the book. By the time he reached me I was just barely able to pull it off. After that its a straight forward kite back and forth

Edit(Patch 2.3.3) : Visited the location and seems that blizzard changed the terrain, as now both sides of the Railing are path-able by mobs, it is still possible to execute the kite, but it is MUCH harder and complicated.

I can verify the above post. All four of these mobs are soloable using the strategy of exploiting the stair pathing mechanism. Soloed by a 70 lock, 41/5/15, 1150 spell damage, ~8k hp, ~6.5k mana, used imp pet, no buffs. Died twice learning the method and mastering the jump. Died once to accidental trash pulling. Lost the tap twice learning the timing.

To clarify the above post a bit, you want to use the railing that runs north-south. It is the first railing above Alandien, to the east. It is distinguishable by a large mass of rocks on the southern end. This is the area that the quest mobs will path through to bridge the gap between the "floor" and the railing. It somewhat resembles the masses of rocks and eggs in the spider boss portion of ZG.

All of the quest mobs have a mana burn ability. I was not able to successfully avoid this by moving out of LoS. I imagine it would be very difficult if not impossible for any class except hunters and warlocks to use this strategy effectively. Also take note of the fact that Theras has a spell reflect ability that he uses every 30-45 second - it lasts for approximately 10 seconds, and resembles a blue mana shield. It does not have a cast time, but makes a distinguishable sound.

For Theras, Alandien, and Varedis, what you want to do is jump from the upper portion of the staircase onto the flat portion of the railing between the far right brazier and the middle brazier. It's difficult to describe. I found a good measure was to jump from the second stair on the upper portion of the staircase, with a healthy angle towards the railing. You're aiming right for the middle of the flat portion. If you fail mid-fight, it is possible to make a "straight" jump from the edge of the railing onto the top of the railing, but it is chancy and more difficult, especially when you're getting hit (and possibly dazed).

I strongly recommend practicing this method on some of the trash nearby before attempting it on a quest mob. There is definitely a learning curve associated with making the jump.

As a lock, remember to put your imp on stay so that he does not attempt to continue pathing, causing you to continuously lose and regain your stam buff.

It is possible to solo Netharel using this method, but you have to use a different spot. Netharel has a few points in his path that are near a short staircase leading down. If you clear the 6 mobs close to this staircase, he can be pulled away from them. Jump from the short staircase onto the railing. Netharel will path down the long staircase and around at the bottom. This path is much longer and seemingly more complex for Netharel to follow, bringing him out of LoS for 5+ seconds. It's sometimes difficult to maintain the tap. An affliction lock can handle it with some practice - it may be more difficult for any other ranged class.

Note that Varedis does have to be in LoS to begin using the book, but he does NOT have to be in LoS when the book finishes its cast. This comes into play because there is a ledge in the railing (where the middle brazier is) that can impede LoS when Varedis is on top of the railing. Knowing ahead of time that you don't have to have LoS when the book finishes can relieve some of the anxiety and you should have plenty of time to bring him out of demon form at 50%. I found that the best way to use the book was to assign it to a hotkey, wait until he was close to me on the "ground" level, then jump onto the railing and immediately use the book - he'll still be in LoS here for a moment before going out of LoS behind the railing, and you can adjust your camera so that you can see him pathing around.

If you need to try the book more than once mid-fight, remember that you can maintain the tap by casting spells even when he goes "immune" to spells and abilities.

This is the conclusion to the Aldor version of the Book of Fel Names chain, which gives Aldor/Scryer rep as well as some nice blue rewards. If you complete it, you can choose from:
Ceremonial Kris (+heal dagger)
Slayer's Axe (2H +str axe)
Sunfury Legguards (+AP mail pants)
Hauberk of Karabor (+AP leather chest)
Summoner's Blade (+dmg sword)
Wildcaller (feral staff)

As with the Medallion of Karabor line, this chain starts different depending on whether you're Aldor (A) or Scryer (S). All the quests are rated level 70 - though the chain is available at level 68, it sends you to the Shadow Labyrinth to kill Blackheart, which you might want to hold off on until level 70.

Aldors pick it up from Exarch Onaala at the Altar of Sha'tar:
1. (A) Karabor Training Grounds
2. (A) A Necessary Distraction
3. (A) Altruis

Scryers need to visit Larissa Sunstrike at the Sanctum of the Stars:
1. (S) Karabor Training Grounds
2. (S) A Necessary Distraction
3. (S) Altruis

Here the chains converge on your old friend Altruis the Sufferer in Nagrand. He gives out three quests that need to be completed (in any order) before you can continue:
4a. Against the Legion - Netherstorm
4b. Against the Illidari - Shadowmoon Valley
4c. Against All Odds - Zangarmarsh
Having gone around the world killing stuff, you can now return to Altruis and receive:
5. Illidan's Pupil
which leads directly into
6. The Book of Fel Names

Now it's time for a venture into the Shadow Labyrinth to kill Blackheart! Once that's done that and his body has been looted for the book, it's back to Altruis where again the chains diverge depending on your allegiance.

Aldor:
7. (A) Return to the Aldor - back to Altar of Sha'tar
8. (A) Varedis Must Be Stopped

Scryer:
7. (S) Return to the Scryers - back to Sanctum of Stars
8. (S) Varedis Must Be Stopped

Varedis Must Be Stopped is the final part. It's a 5-man group quest that sends you to the terrace outside the Black Temple to kill four elites: Varedis, Netharel, Theras and Alandien. Look them up for co-ordinates and tips on killing them - they're pretty straightforward, really.

When they're dead it's a simple matter of returning to the questgiver to choose a prize.

For Druids, I'd reccommend taking Hauberk of Karabor over Wildcaller. It's easy to get a weapon replacement like Fleshling Simulation Staff or Dreamer's Dragonstaff. Even staying with Staff of Beasts for some time won't hurt ya. But Hauberk of Karabor is IMHO the second best pre-raid and pre-heroic chest you can get. It's bested only by Shadowprowler's Chestguard for which it will take more time and money to grind and you'll either pay a hell of a lot for the Bolts of Soulcloth or be doing Karazhan for the Soul Essences before you get it.

Soloed with a 70lvl warlock. Just kite on top of stairs at 71,50 and put pet on Varedis after he changes form to get some time to cast the book. Basicly similiar to others apart from that.

Oh, and make sure you clear the mobs on the stairs just before you pull Varedis, it's gonna take a bit of time.

hm... tried to solo it today, but that b*tch run the other way. well thats not the prob, the main prob is mana burn. i cant kill him without mana. lolz.
so i dunno this is prolly soloble for resto druids, but will take ages.
and adds will spawn... so no idea..

Varedis was easily 3-manned by enchance shaman, holy priest, and arcane mage. Shammy used elemental to tank and he was downed quickly.

The shammy left, and I (the arcane mage) tanked/dps'd the other 3 elites in BG gear (nothing special... 10k/10k with 220 resilience) while the priest healed. Took a lil' bit, but do-able.

Soloed Netharel, Theras and Alandien.
Had to ask guildie for help for Varedis and 2manned it.

Holy paladin, judge wisdom, seal of righteousness judging, holy shock, concenration until oom (I was oom around at 60%). Just keep yourself up with the little mana you get while autoattacking. Mana tap x3 and Arcane torrent just after a mana burn to do some dmg. Didn't use tome.

Memento of Tyrande saved me a few times. :p

Soloed Varedis as protection pally, tough fight thou, took over 10mins.

if you gonna solo as a paladin, use the book of fel names is a must, since he will become immune to magics when below 50%, use the book will remove the effect

walk through:
before start, make you you have:
*bless of Sanctuary
*FR aura
*LOH in CD, in case of accident.

1. lure 3-4 initiates with you when starting.
2. move around the entire fight, to lure more initiate into the fight, try to avoid caster mobs.
3. SOL and JOL on him all the time, this should be enough to keep up the damage taken. HotR whenever CD is up, you dont want to conserve mana in this fight, he will do mana burn anyway, your mana will regen fast enough by having initiates attacking you all the time,
4. leave your bubble to 50%, cuz you will need a full 10secs casting time to use book of fel names.
5. finish the remaining half, same as first half.

key to success: always keep moving, both to get more adds, and to minimize damage taken from flame wave and flame attacks.

I wiped 5 times on this guy, i tried again and again because on the first try i got him down to 20k already.

The above mentioned comments are helpful, enable the enemy casting bar in your preferences - when you see him casting RUN - the fire will follow his path so keep running....

Tactic for casting the book for 10sec (you cant heal in this time) was:

1. Use Vampiric Blood
2. Use Mark of Blood

you should survive the 10sec easily

then just do your rotations - a bit of luck is involved if you cant escape the fire you are SOL but keep trying i only had quest green/blues lvl76 and could take him down

not a show off, just to tell DKs that it can be done below 80 if you are not a paladin =)

Soloed with a lvl 80 shadow priest. Mainly in holy/healing gear, 2 pieces of t9 shadow... With shadow spec though...
Easy enough all way through... Did get a nasty surprise when I attacked Varedis though... I had seen him as one of the 3 others, easier ones to take, and then he is suddenly immune to all my attacks :p

I had to heal myself a bit, but i put on Power Word: Shield while casting the book thingie... Fully soloable as lvl 80 shadow priest though! :)

Some suggestions were very helpful, but a few confused me a little, so just to be sure: use the book when he transforms. I died the first time because I thought a valid tactic could be to not use it, but he becomes immune to magic when he transforms. All my nice DK abilities missed him completely and my army of skellies only stood around looking stupid while he was in demon form.

So for people who like me want to solo him on level 80: whack him to half health, use the book and whack some more. At level 80 none of his abilities hit very hard, even the flame thingy can be ignored, and he is very simple to kill then.

For those who are looking for Netharel at 69:53. He patrols a wide area around those coords. I found him on the lower deck below the coords. So he is not standing on top of Alandien as the coords given imply.

Level 69 Guardian druid, pretty easy to solo. Obviously Wildcaller is a pretty cool staff for a bear-themed druid, so I had to go after this!

Just keep tapping on Rejuvenation and make sure your Survival Instinct and other damage-reducing moves are up as frequently as possible.
Veradis himself is definitely a little more tricky than the others, but stay out of his Flame Wall and have massive amounts of patience and it's almost as easy as pumpkin pie!

Varedis Must Be Stopped

Exarch Onaala wants you to go to the ruins of Karabor and slay Alandien, Theras, Netharel and Varedis. Use the Book of Fel Names when Varedis uses Metamorphosis to weaken him. Return to Exarch Onaala with the Book of Fel Names after you've completed this task.

Completing quests for the Aldor will cause your Scryers reputation to decrease.

Description

We must dispose of this foul artifact, but not before we use it to dispose of Varedis's powers.

We need to permanently shut down the Ruins of Karabor training grounds, which will mean killing not only Varedis but also the three night elf masters that assist him: Alandien, Theras and Netharel.

Gather a suitable force and return to the Ruins of Karabor. Follow Altruis's instructions for defeating Varedis. For all of our sakes, I hope they work.
