The Dalaran fountain coin Princess Calia Menethil's Copper Coin references Calia's arranged marriage to Daval Prestor. Fishing up numerous copper coins from Wrath Dalaran fountains rewards the A Penny For Your Thoughts achievement.

Arthas and the Scourge

“I stood in the middle of the street, screaming for them. Someone took pity on me, pulling me onto his horse and galloping past the limits of the town barely in time. There was a cluster of refugees in the forest. So many of us waited, desperate for word of our loved ones. Sometimes prayers were answered. I prayed that my family, too, would be spared. But... her voice trailed off. I never saw them again...”

Find the Lich King in game:

In Icecrown, Pulsing Crystal, the heart of Arthas, starts a massive lore questline. For part of the questline, Matthias Lehner (thought to be the conscience of Arthas), will let you relive key events in Arthas' life such as raising Sindragosa and fighting Illidan. Tirion Fordring eventually destroys the heart of Arthas, which greatly weakens the Lich King.
Icecrown Citadel is the definitive raid of Wrath of the Lich King. Its final boss is none other than the Lich King himself! This raid progressively unlocked over the course of many weeks; the end bosses had limited attempts as well.
Acquiring Shadowmourne was a major part of Icecrown Citadel; the player who finished the questline also obtained Sylvanas' Music Box, Jaina's Locket, Tabard of the Lightbringer, Muradin's Favor, and Reins of the Crimson Deathcharger. Farming Icecrown Citadel is still popular today for Invincible's Reins and Precious's Ribbon.

After the defeat of the Lich King, Bolvar Fordragon took up the mantle to ensure the Scourge always had a ruler. His story continues a bit in Legion in the Class Hall Campaign and Class Mount Questline for the Decaying Reins of the Vilebrood Vanquisher.
The Frost Death Knight Artifact Weapon, Blades of the Fallen Prince, was forged from the broken shards of Frostmourne. In the Artifact Book you can read more about the lore behind this weapon.

Learn more about Southshore:

Players can visit the current blighted version of Southshore in Hillsbrad Foothills in BFA, the original version in WoW Classic, and a past version in the dungeon Old Hillsbrad Foothills which is filled with many Easter eggs.
In the Studies in Lethality questline, Horde players learn more about why the blight was used, and discover the strain is stronger than expected.
In Battle for Azeroth, we learn through the Alliance War Campaign missions Southshore Sabotage and Southshore Sabotage that a group of Paladins led by Raleigh the Devout is trying to purify Southshore.

Calia in Before the StormBefore the Storm

One of our past collaborations with Nobbel87 was The Story of Before the Storm. In this article, we analyze important sections of the novel and highlight their in-game references as usual.

One notable Easter egg is that important Forsaken characters killed in Before the Storm have a graveyard in Battle for Azeroth, as well as tombstones and little details like a wedding ring on Elsie's tomb.

Calia's Resurrection

Calia would come to me when the dreams of what was past were too painful to endure. I cautioned her to have patience. There were things she had to do before the dreams would cease, things she must understand. People who would need her help.

And I assured her of this seemingly strange truth: that sometimes the most beautiful and important gifts come wrapped in pain and blood.

There will be no more of those battles for her now. Calia Menethil will be freed from the pain of the living, from the nightmares that once rent her heart.

She understood that those on that field were her people. And she accepted that responsibility by giving her life to try to save them. Not human, as they were when she was young, but Forsaken, as they were in that moment.

Light and dark. Forsaken priest and human priest. Together you shall bring her back as the Light and she herself would have her be.

No. I am not yet ready to rule. But I wish to serve the people of Lordaeron. They are my people, and now I am like them. It feels...right." She smiled. "I'll learn. And from the archbishop, I'll learn what it's like to be...this. To be undead yet walk in the Light.

It should have been ghoulish. But as Calia Menethil, changed but still herself, gazed at the king of Stormwind, all Anduin could think of were the naaru’s words: Calia was freed forever from the nightmares that had haunted her. And he was glad. It was the only comfort on one of the bleakest days he had ever known.

Immediately following the events of Before the Storm, we move into the events which set the Burning of Teldrassil into motion. We analyzed the events in great detail in The Story of the Burning of Teldrassil, explaining the out-of-game events only described in the novellas. We also highlighted the lyrics to the Lament for Teldrassil and spotlighted the role of Tyrande in the novellas, as she was mostly-absent from the in-game events.
Several weeks later, the Battle for Lordaeron unlocked, in which Sylvanas unleashed blight on both Alliance and Horde, Jaina showed up to seemingly save the day, and victory was snatched away from the Alliance by Sylvanas giving orders to blast the keep. Lordaeron was destroyed, and Sylvanas escaped. We analyzed Sylvanas' recent character development in Sylvanas' Motivation and Parallels to Arthas in the BFA Pre-Patch.
Calia's story isn't the only one from Before the Storm to resurface later in Battle for Azeroth. The goblin and gnome couple, Grizzek Fizzwrench and Sapphronetta Flivvers, have made several reappearances, first as a subtle Easter egg during Assaults, then as a special questline for Feathers, and finally we encounter them in Mechagon.

Calia and the Battle of Dazar'alor

“It’s good to have you back with us Aunti, I missed you.” “So much transpired while I was away. Anduin...I’ve heard rumors about an old friend of mine – Calia Menethil. What happened in Arathi?”
“There is much to explain. Some I still don’t fully understand. But I’ll tell you what I know.” “Thank you. Let’s find somewhere quiet to talk.”

“So much has changed, Derek. I ... there is something I must tell you.” “I know about father. The Horde spewed lies to poison me against you. But Baine explained the truth of what happened. You, mother, and Tandred all endured so much. I’m pleased you have each other again, but...where does my path lead? ”
“I don’t know. But we will the answer together.” “ I can’t come home, can I?” ‘No. Not yet. But I know others who have been through this. I believe they can help you.”
“Will you come with me, Jaina? I...I don’t know if I can do this alone.”
“Of course, Derek. No matter the storm, we will face it...as family.”

Some events described above take place in the Patch 8.1 Horde War Campaign. In this campaign, you will also see the Horde steal the Abyssal Scepter, find Derek Proudmoore's body, and help Lady Ashvane escape from the Tol Dagor prison. The War Campaign is needed for several Allied Races:

At the end of the 8.0 War Campaign, you will receive the achievement Ready for War;
Ready for War is a requirement for both the Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part One achievement, and part of the criteria to unlock the Mag'har Orc Allied Race.

At the end of the 8.1 War Campaign, you will receive the achievement Tides of Vengeance;

Tides of Vengeance is part of the criteria to unlock the Zandalari Troll Allied Race.

The Horde War Campaign also gives reputation with the Honorbound Faction. Hitting Exalted is required to unlock the Mag'har Orc Allied Race.

Completing the Campaign as well as Loremaster on both sides rewards Two Sides to Every Tale.

Patch 8.1 and the War Campaign culminated in the opening of the new raid, which we've recapped in the Story of Dazar'alor.

The raid came with several cinematics and narrative plot twists, which we further analyzed in Rastakhan Cinematic Analysis, Who Won the Battle of Dazar'alor? and the Siege of Dazar'alor Cinematic Analysis.

While Dazar'alor is no longer a current raid, you may still want to run it for rewards like Dazar'alor Windreaver, G.M.O.D., and Glacial Tidestorm.

The story then continued in Patch 8.1.5 with the arrest of Baine Bloodhoof and reunion of Jaina and Derek, which we've discussed here. It remains to be seen whether Derek has regained his free will, or if returning him to Jaina was part of Sylvanas' master plan.

This story then took a backseat in Patch 8.2, but Sylvanas' motivations remain murky as the Blade of the Black Empire, in the hands of Nathanos, guides us to Nazjatar in the opening cinematic. The Alliance and Horde also work together to free Baine from Orgrimmar, leading to further speculation that faction lines could be redrawn in a future expansion.

We've written a series of articles analyzing Sylvanas' motivations, including Story of the Afterlife and Shadowlands - Who Touched Vol'jin's Spirit? which may be relevant if we go to the Shadowlands as speculated in a future patch.

While Patch 8.2 focuses on the Old Gods with Nazjatar and Azshara, this may also be tied back to Sylvanas. With so many Old Gods whispers floating about, some appear to reference the Dark Lady--either aware of the plans of the Old God, or a terrifying enemy of theirs. Reshaping of Faction LinesBefore the Storm

In the Crossroads cinematic, we get a teaser of potential peace between the factions. Jaina and Thrall reminisce on their past allegiances, strife, and how to improve moving forward.

A breakdown of the two factions would also help the game for practical reasons--removing the constant issues of Alliance vs Horde balance in competitive WoW. For example, when Crucible Cutting Edge for Horde hit 100 guilds, only 12 Alliance guilds had defeated Mythic Uu'nat. This type of extreme faction imbalance would be solved should the faction divide change.

Light Forsaken CustomizationBefore the Storm

We've written before that each major Patch of BFA so far focuses on a different Warbringer, which would lead to Sylvanas being the focus of the final patch of the expansion as we learn more about her motives. With a Sylvanas-centric plot, we'd hope to see payoff to the choice of allegiance between Saurfang and Sylvanas that Horde players made earlier in Battle for Azeroth, and possibly even a new type of Undead forged in the Light like Calia Menethil. While we used it as an April Fools joke, there's a strong case to be made that a new type of Undead could fit into the roster of playable races, represented by Derek Proudmoore and Calia Menethil; it would set up a nice parallel between Sylvanas' ability to raise the dead as Forsaken while her rival faction leader Anduin assists in bringing undead to the Light.

As the Horde leadership is divides further, we could also see a breakdown of the current factions, with fringe groups of Undead and Night Elves both. Should Patch 8.3 center on Sylvanas, the question of how to handle her controversial leadership would rise to the forefront. Perhaps we may even start to see similar dissent between Alliance leadership, hinted as a future plot point in the Polygon interview.

Alliance don’t have that same division in their ranks just yet, and there isn’t that same natural point of choice.

Jailor of the Damned

What we know: one of the main narrative themes from BTS was the Alliance not being so zealous in their hatred of undead and that Calia was largely portrayed as an Alliance counterpart to Sylvanas (re: claim over rulership of Lordaeron). We know her lore ties are Alliance, and the structure of the book strengthened that perception rather than doing anything to weaken it.

We also know her presence has only been felt by Alliance specific dialogue, and has yet to even be mentioned on Horde side. We also know that the entire purpose of the Forsaken as a playable race in WoW was to give playable presence to the Undead faction of WC3; Calia light-ifying them would annihilate their aesthetic purpose and function. Anecdotally, most Horde and especially Undead players that I've seen comment on the subject are pretty against her whole arc intruding on their faction.

Further, we know that her model as of right now has allied race written all over it. It's a simple reskin of the human model. The human model doesn't yet have a counterpart within the typical allied race framework, all due respect to Kul Tirans.

Lastly, we know Lordaeron stands unclaimed. We know there was an odd, still unexplained face lift of Uther's Tomb pre-launch. We know there have been some datamined Scarlet pamphlets that seem to be Alliance focused (as they only mention Alliance leadership) that make reference to Calia, and could prove to be an arc of the Alliance ridding itself of the last vestige of fanatical undead hate that they began with.

AND we also know that dropping Lordaeron returning would make a pretty sweet Blizzcon reveal that would give Alliance players something to be excited about. Maybe I'm crazy but I think all of the signs are there.

EDIT: Forgot to mention Derek's arc which, aside from being the source of another Alliance specific Calia reference, furthers the theme of undead humans returning to the Alliance that began in BTS. The dialogue surrounding it, with Jaina saying he couldn't return home "yet," would tend to suggest in the future there will be a time for similar undead to return to the Alliance en masse.

The Forsaken will still exist, Lillian Voss types who are so deeply damaged or otherwise have nothing to return to. Or those who have made stronger bonds with the Horde in death than they had in life. As for who leads them, I would start with Nathanos who is potentially ripe for a turncoat moment in the face of the Horde at large turning against Sylv. If Blizz has a better read on who is popular though, I would hope they choose Lillian instead.Comment by BeredricI've been saying for some time now, at least amongst my friends, that I believe BFA and the next expansion will effectively culminate in an end to Factions in World of Warcraft. At least, factions in the way we see them in the game now. There are several MMOs that come to mind in terms of not having factions to divide the playerbase in such a drastic way; "Final Fantasy XIV" is the first that comes to mind. All races, able to go anywhere and complete any major story quest, while still having their class quests in the intern. I believe, rather firmly, that we will eventually see a "dissolution" of Horde and Alliance. The factions will still "exist" as a way to explain the player verses player aspect of the game, or maybe that will evolve and will turn to something akin to Clans or Orders or Guilds that emerge following lasting peace between the Alliance and Horde, wishing to carry on and work to annihilate the opposition they have had for the last 30-years (in lore). It is a theory, but Blizzard themselves said when they announced BFA at Blizzcon, 2017, that it was time for the Faction War to end. That they had never had a true ending to it, and that we had simply come together to fight a bigger bad, only to strike at one another again and again. Which is true. Mount Hyjal, Illidan and the Legion, Arthas, Deathwing, the Sha and Garrosh, and finally the Legion. Sure now we have N'Zoth to worry about, but he's the last great threat I can see Azeroth having. Once we defeat him, I can't see the game being able to continue with a faction war, and the next big bad will have to be something even stronger than both N'Zoth, and the Legion combined.Comment by darkelemental1Any story with more Lightforghed undead or more Calia at all is a story I will despise for every letter in it.. Sylvanas has been one of my favorite characters since she was introduced. As long as they don't force a redemption arc and pull a "it was all for the greater good!" at the last minute, I'll be content. I really hope she keeps her selfish side to the bitter end and if she goes down she goes down swinging.

As for Calia, I like her model and even sympathize with her but I'm otherwise neutral about her and "Light undead". Lordaeron is still claimed by the very people who lived there. If Bliz is getting rid of factions, then she could just be leading her people from Lordaeron. I don't see needing them as a light-based undead Alliance race. but maybe a quest like the Night Elf Night Warrior customization for those that want to be light embued and still Horde aligned (for pvp).

She had a hard life.Comment by FreeasacarCalia will be the only answer the Forsaken will have left after Sylvanas, Nathanos, and possibly her non-player loyalists are ousted from the Horde since any Forsaken that would've been willing to take leadership have already been killed off by Sylvanas since she's so terrified of losing control over them. Calia's character arc is so common there's a TV Tropes article on it called "He's Back" where the character loses against the villain or their own self-doubt and comes back to eventually defeat them, the villain in question this time being Sylvanas.

But what they might be doing is making some existing races into 'neutral' races like Pandaren. There's light-aligned Maghar orcs supposedly on alt Draenor. There's goblins who favor the alliance. There's human pirates siding with the horde.

Or it might be a way for forsaken to have a customization where they can have armor on their knees and elbows.Comment by JaceDraccus
