This axe is beastly, being able to have up to 256 (298 with JC Gems) Strength and 270 more from the proc.
It is also, our second, permanent, available to players, Legendary, 2h Weapon.

The extremely high item level of this weapon combined with it's three sockets (red even) will most likely mean that anyone acquiring this item won't get an upgrade before far into the raids of Cataclysm.

Now the question is what happens if Trial of the Champion is the daily and you get the proc from this?
Techically you would have
This
right?

My questions about this beautiful axe are:
#1 What is the proc rate for grabbing a bit of a soul
#2 does the 40 str stack per soul fragment taken? (1 fragment 40 str, 2 frags 80) If it does then I say before a battle ground hit a target dummy until you get 9 stacks, then first person you go after in the bg takes atleast a +620 attack power hit and (as long as not to many other people are around) an extra 2000ish dmg from the proc.
#3 And I think most importantly, would the proc break cc? The discription makes it sound like an outward wave, like arcane explosion. Also it says "Between
all
enemies", the simple solution is don't stand on the cc targets, but it still might be a danger to the group.

Before beginning his reign as the Lich King, Prince Arthas Menethil was first a servant, ruled by a sword he believed was the key to saving his people - the runeblade Frostmourne. Finding and claiming the blade among the frozen wastes of Northrend was an odyssey unto itself, and the search cost the prince his mentor, his relationship with his subjects, and his humanity. It cost the living of Azeroth far more.
With a tight grip on the blade that he traded his life for, Arthas ravaged the kingdom of Lordaeron and broke free from the control of the Burning Legion. By the time the former prince ascended as the leader of the Scourge, Frostmourne was already glutted with the souls of the numberless dead who dared to oppose him.
Now, Arthas has become so inseparable from his weapon that the sword's likeness has even found its way into the architecture of his fortress, Icecrown Citadel. Its hilt is never far from his hands; its ghostly whispers constantly ring in his ears. Frostmourne, as much as the Lich King, is the ruler of Northrend.
To challenge that rule, mighty heroes will need to follow more closely in Arthas's path than ever before.
In a relentless quest to arm the forces of the living against the Scourge, Darion Mograine has formed the Ashen Verdict, a union between the most skilled craftsmen of the Argent Crusade and the Ebon Blade. Though the peerless paladins of the Crusade wield the power of the Light, and their leader clutches Ashbringer, a few of Mograine's dark warriors have begun to question their hopes for victory.
These death knights insist that the Ashbringer and the skills of the Argent Crusaders, though potent, aren't enough to best Frostmourne alone. They swear that Darion Mograine has long been quietly aware of another legendary blade - one that could be the key to defeating the Lich King and cleansing Northrend... But it doesn't exist yet.
For the moment, the weapon is a formless idea, with no more killing power than an angry thought. When it is spoken of, it is spoken of quietly, and the Highlord has a habit of silencing those who discuss it in public.
But the hope of an artifact to rival Frostmourne is strong within the minds of the Ebon Blade. Just its name inspires the furnaces to burn late into the night, the bellows to pump air, and the darker half of the Verdict's smiths to swing their hammers until their fingers fail. While other craftsmen crafters lean over whetstones and gather pitted blades by the hundreds, these few dream of a single weapon to end the war for Northrend.
Shadowmourne... A great two-handed axe fit for a giant, born of sacred and corrupt powers, host of a thousand dead souls and able to be wielded only by the most stalwart armsmasters of Azeroth. Its creation seems nearly impossible; and yet, the rumors do not cease.
Some smiths claim that Shadowmourne must be nothing more than an ordinary axe, honed to unparalleled perfection, while others would shape it from a weapon of immense import in the world. Mograine, when he can be convinced to speak of it at all, is said to believe that only the hammer of Arthas himself will provide a worthy model - but such absurd ambition is just the beginning of Shadowmourne's creation.
To contain the energies that dance across its cold edges, Shadowmourne must be hewn from piles of impure Saronite: the hardened blood of the Old God, Yogg-Saron, treated only by master metal-shapers.
To fuel its power to kill, it is vital that Shadowmourne be drenched in the souls of the most potent servants of the Scourge as they are slain, one by one, with the unfinished blade.
To help break through the Lich King's armor, Shadowmourne is to be adorned with fragments of the Frozen Throne, originally crafted by Kil'Jaeden out of ice from the Twisting Nether.
Only with these mighty components, it's said, can Shadowmourne be finished. And, yet, even if the axe could be completed, questions and fears remain. Is forging the souls of the deceased into a weapon treated withblood and the essence of the Twisting Nether truly any different from the crafting of the Scourge's runeblades?
Who is to say that the Lich King wouldn't simply annihilate - or control - the maker for their impudence in mimicking his most treasured possession? If Arthas, one of the most dedicated knights of his age, lost his humanity to the whispers of Frostmourne, might Shadowmourne bring the same doom and misery tothe living as its sister blade?
Without knowing the answers to these questions, who would be bold enough to try and wield it?

I find it funny that there's a vendor price at all. Imagine being the vendor who got sold this.

Um, well, I guess I can give you 50 gold for this. Alright, thank you. Have a nice day. Hmmm, what an endearing thing...look how it glows...maybe I'll keep this for myself instead of--FOOLISH MORTALS, ALL WILL BOW AT THE FEET OF THE

Or even
"Hey, I want to sell my weapon."
"Kay. I'll give you 30 gold for it."
"30 gold? This is Shadowmourne! Bane of the Lich King!"
"Kay."
"It was forged with the blood of an Old God and shards from the Frozen Throne itself, infused with the powers of blood, frost, and unholy! Within this blade is 1,000 souls of fallen heroes claimed by the Lich King, defeated over the course of many months by my own hand. This is the blade that tore into the Lich King's body and ended his reign of terror once and for all!"
"Aight. 40 gold then."

So
my Death Knight tank guildie
just told me that ret pallies
SHOULD NOT
get this weapon because it has armor penetration. As a ret pally i laughed. For all u Ret Pallies who roll on this you are evil people! Ignore the
68 strength
u could get from socketing 3 Cardinal Rubies, or the
223 strength
it alredy has, this weapon is worthless because of the Armor Penetration. Plus the proc and the 114 extra crit strike rating are lame anyway. O and BTW if u roll on DPS plate as a ret pally go shoot urself, and anything with strength should go to a warrior. So in conclusion Ret Pallies should not roll on gear anymore. Ever.

To be honest, I'm somewhat worried about the power of this weapon being, well, a little TOO powerful in retrospect.
Granted that few people will get their hands on this in the long run, this item will undoubtedly smash faces so hard to the point where it may take only a few (or couple) of hits to kill someone. Its DPS is 50 above any other known weapon from 3.3, and it has more than 100 strength and almost 100 more stamina, plus gemming, AND its proc. From a PvP standpoint, this thing just seems to be ungodly.
We will have to see -- grats in advance to whoever gets one of these.
I find it amusing that people would rate this down...Pretty safe to assume it's some Death Knight in blues, whoever it is.

The Shadowmourne Quest Chain:
You must be friendly with the Ashen Verdict to obtain this quest.
You first must obtain Arthas' old hammer from when he was a paladin and a variety of mats (including 25 primordial saronite, basically the Icecrown equivalent of a crusader orb, and the blood of the two abomination bosses of the Plague Wing) in the quest
The Sacred and the Corrupt
, completing this will forge
Shadow's Edge
.
Then you get to harvest 1000 souls with the axe (just kill 1000 mobs in ICC on either 10 or 25 man) for
A feast of Souls
.
Next, you must take the axe and complete three quests involving the end bosses of the three wings of the citadel, starting with Professor Putricide in the Plagueworks, then Blood Queen Lana'thel in the Crimson Hall, and finally Sindragosa in the Frostwing Halls.
The first quest is
Unholy Infusion
, in which you must use the ability
Shadow Infusion
while controlling the abomination, then proceed to kill Professor Putricide within 6 minutes before the resulting buff wears off. This quest is only completable on 25 player mode.
The second quest is
Blood Infusion
. To complete the infusion for this quest you must first stand next to your tank for a moment so that you can be affected by
Blood Mirror
which will apply the debuff
Gushing Wound
, you don't need to stand there long, just a split second to apply the debuff. After getting the debuff you need use the
Vampiric Bite
ability twice to get the debuff to a 3 stack, then once more to apply the buff you need to have when you kill the boss to complete the quest (for a total of 3 bites). In order to get all three bites before your raid runs out of people to bite, you need to either be the first vampire, or be bitten by the first vampire. Seeing as the latter is more likely, make sure you're on the top priority to get bitten.
The third quest is, you guessed it,
Frost Infusion
. To complete the infusion you must get hit four times by Sindragosa's Frost Breath (Inflicts 37000 to 43000 Frost damage to enemies in a 60 yard cone in front of the caster. In addition, the targets' attack speed and chance to dodge are decreased by 50% for 6 sec. Melee range. 1.5 sec cast) four times, then proceed to kill her. Ouch.
You then get to farm bosses in the instance for a while for the quest
The Splintered Throne
to get 50 Shadowfrost Shards (25-50% drop chance on 25 player normal; 50-99% on 25 hard), they are looted items, however they can only be seen if someone in the raid is on this part of the quest chain.
After completing this quest, you will finally be given Shadowmourne in the quest:
Shadowmourne...
After obtaining the axe there is one additional quest:
The Lich King's Last Stand
which has you take your newly forged weapon and slay the Lich King.
This is probably the hardest legendary quest chain since Atiesh, good luck getting this beast of an axe.
EDIT: Think everything's accurate now, let me know if I have something wrong.

False. Epics and legendaries are actually budgeted the same way. This is nicely illustrated byt Val'anyr and the Anub ToC mace.
Legendaries are usually better itemised (like in this case!), possibly of higher ilevel (like say warglaives) and they have a procc, which is free of budgeting, making them better than epics of the same ilevel (the shadow damage + str procc, val'anyrs shield, warglaives haste procc and setbonus etc)

Having read most Shadowmourne comments, i ask this of you Wowhead community. Stop. there are 141 comments; 100+ of those say "This weapon is OP. YAY."; "This weapon i too OP. QQ."; "I crit my pants twice". This is a desirable item, with indeed incredible stat allocation, and Paladins, Warriors and Death Knights will be lining up to get this as soon as possible. It may impact pvp, certainly, but do not state comparisons before s8 is even released. This is meant to be obtainable by few, and I doubt any endgame guild would allow this to go to a PvPer. Should a full endgame pve player enter arenas, at a higher level, he'll still be CCed to death. Where this trashes is mostly on lower brackets. Get ratings first, QQ later.
My point is, no point on having 30248712098471029834701928347 comments on how strong the weapon is. Anyone understanding the basics of WoW stats can see that. Keep it unflooded, K?

Yes Taelroc, your guildie is right,
ret pallies SHOULD NOT get this weapon because it has armor penetration
Pallies have some
holy

spells
that ignore armor anyway.
So lets see here...
Classes: Warrior,
Paladin
, Death Knight
I guess that leaves us with Death Knights as the most likely....
Oh wait, DKs have these weird
disease
effects
that
also
ignore
armor.
Classes: Warrior,
Paladin
,
Death Knight
Oh well, I guess it should go to the real men. The original warriors...
Sorry, they have
bleeds
which
ignore
armor.
Now we have a conundrum.
Cannot be disenchanted
And who, gentlemen, does that leave us with?
Yup, its a
Hunter
weapon.

Theorycrafting:
This stacking +str
buff
that explodes to a weak
aoe
, gives an interesting mechanic:
For maximizing dps, rotations will probably need to be modified, so that the most damaging attacks are done with a full stack of
Soul Fragment
. (+360str)
Looking forward to find out if this is true (which will happen only after the weapon is on live servers, and numbers are put to the test).
EDIT: Downrate if it is a stupid comment, but don't just spam the . Or at least provide some useful info.

I think the itemization for this weapon is crazy awesome. I love it!
Three red sockets! I'm putting three
Dragon's eyes
into this!
Oh, and I'm not going to forget the
weapon enchant
!
But wait! There's more!
Soul Fragment
will stack up to 9 times, summing up to another 270 strength! (That is, before you make your next swing which causes
Chaos bane
).
So 223 Strength initially
plus 34 strength from each Dragon's eye (102 strength)
8 from the socket bonus
and then 270 strength from Soul Fragment
add it together you get 603 strength
now just take that, and double it to get your AP total: 1206 AP
now add Berserk: 1606 AP
(for those who do not have Jewelcrafting as their profession, the final AP would be 1522 with three
20 str gems
)
That's a lot of AP for one weapon

Shadowmourne is an excellent weapon for any melee class. This weapon would be amazing for a DeathKnight tank as well.
Axe - Increased expertise if you're an Orc.
High Damage - Increased threat.
High Strength - Increased threat as well as parry.
High Stamina - Increased HP.
Three Sockets - Perfect for Stamina gems.
High Critical Strike Rating - Increased threat.
High Armor Penetration - Increased threat.
Special Ability - Stacking threat as well as parry, and after the stack is complete you cause AE damage in turn giving more AE threat which is where DeathKnights are lacking.
As I've said before, this weapon is good for any melee class; I just wanted to explain why it would be amazing for a DeathKnight tank.

I think that this is a replacement of Frostmourne.. Because Frostmourne is/would be way too powerful for a player to carry.
If it is right what I have heard, Frostmourne drains the soul of anything it kills, and the wielder will get those powers.
It doesnt only drain the soul from anything it kills, because Arthas' soul was the first it claimed. And he didnt die when his soul was taken..
Edit: I know the weapons are two way different things, but still I think it is a replacement. Because you cannot get Froustmourne, they made a new weapon.. Shadowmourne!
And it doesnt fit 100% in because Shadowmourne was made to kill the Lich King, but you cannot get it before you have killed him!
Edit: You can get it before killing him...
If you dont understand me read this:
I think Blizzard tought about if they should allow players to use Froustmourne or not.. And they chose to not allow us. And I think they also tought that we would be a little mad about it, so they made a new weapon. A replacement.
Of course I am not sure! Edit: Not at all

I regret that this thing is NOT worth the cost of making it.
It may be cool looking, and lord knows I wanted it, but adding both Val'Anyr level boss grinding, combined with 25 Primordial Saronite, is more than a bit too inaccessible.
575 Frost Badges worth of Primordial Saronite, a full ICC clear, and 50 random drop shards? No way, no how.
The 575 Frost Badges alone is price enough for a weapon like this, which while excellent, isn't so much better than the rest of the drops in 25 ICC to be worth it. Maybe if those Shadowfrost shards were a quest type drop where multiple people could collect them simultaneously, but with their low drop rate, they just aren't worth trying for in most guilds.
I understand legendaries are supposed to be awe-inspiring weapons, but relative to the difficulty in getting it, I don't know if it's worth it. It's not as if it is Val'Anyr in that the items them selves are passive and that's all that's required, you have to frontload a rediculous amount of mats before you can even start the gathergrind.
Comment by
185084
Unfortunately, too many people are going to want said axe. Any and all DKs, Ret Paladins and DPS warriors would love to get their hands on it.
My problem with it is that they made it effectively twice as expensive to make in time and resources as any of the other legendaries. It's up there in the cost/time requirements of Thunderfury, and by and large, they are trying to make things more accessible for people not in the highest tier guilds. 25 Primordial Saronite, and an ICC clear (which may require hardmodes), followed by the 1000kill grind is probably about right for the power of the weapon. Maybe a few Shadowfrost shards like 10-20 even, but not 50 at the proposed drop rate, more than what it'd take to make the Ulduar hammer. Especially as this is a 'crafted' weapon, not one bound by history and lore.
25 Primordial Saronite, assuming the guild is doing some of the donating, means that there aren't going to be many of those BiS patterns bought, made or anything of the sort. Even if people are getting some/most of their own saronite, it's not exactly cheap, and would mean that they are skipping, or seriously delaying most of their Tier 10 stuff to do it.

Uhmm.. Its a little silly...
"Hello! Do you want to make this uber cool weapon? So we might be able to kill the Lich King?"
"Uhh.. Yeah!"
"Okay.. First we need 25 Primordial Saronite, Blood from Festergut, blood from Rotface and Light's Vengeance and put it in a Rune Forge inside Icecrown Citadel. Could you do that?"
"Nothing more?"
Months of cash/EoF farming farming later:
"Okay, I am back!"
"Great! Now take the weapon and kill 1000 scourge, and let the weapon devour it!"
"Seriously.. Is that all?"
Days of scourge slaughtering later:
"Okay, you have to complete almost half of Icecrown citadel in 25man mode, and kill Professor Putricide then return to me just to be sent back to kill Queen Lana'thel and return again just to be sent back to torture yourself while fighting Sindragosa, before killing her."
"Great! Ill be back before you can say *Ouch it hurts to stand inside Sindragosas frost breath*!"
When you are back:
"Okay I am done.. What now?"
"Now you got to find 60 super rare shards from the Lich Kings throne!"
"Piece of cake.."
You finally return:
"Good.. here is Shadowmourne! Good luck killing the Lich King! I bet 33gold and 20 silver that you fail!"
Isnt it a little much to do? I mean.. The weapon is good, but not that great? Use the emblems of frost at T10 is my tip.

I wonder how exactly long this'll take anyone to get?
I mean, there's a 25-50% drop rate of the Shadowfrost shards from 25 man normal, and then 50%-99% drop rate in 25 man heroic. One has to collect 60 of these shards.
Before that, you have to kill 1000 Scourge in the Citadel.
Wow... I can never even dream of getting this amazing weapon.

Mind you, none of us has seen a player w\ Shadowmourne actually trying to face the Lich King. The description from Blizz implies that Shadowmourne is Frostmourne's "sister blade", i.e. roughly equal to it in power and.. EVIL.
Now, would you be so kind as to recall the WotLK trailer?
"Only then will you realise, that you have been following MY footsteps all along"
Just imagine this scene - a ret pally (or a death knight, or warrior) enters the throne chamber, and then the following dialogue happens.
The Lich King - So, you have indeed decided to sacrifice your friends to get this blade. You are stronger, than I thought.
Player - Don't waste words, Arthas. All I can hear now is my blade speaking to me.
The Lich King - You hate me. It is good. Now, let your anger, your grief, your lust for vengeance consume you, turn them into your weapon - only then will you be able to defeat me. Only then will you be able to have your revenge!
Player - Enough! Let's finish this!
Player charges onward, only to be consumed by his/her dark side, and to be transformed into Arthas's new weapon.
The Lich King - Your fate was sealed from the moment you vowed revenge.
The Lich King - Now, my new champion, let's show them the power of the Dark Blades, shall we? NOW FROSTMOURNE!
Player (succumbed to the dark) - NOW SHADOWMOURNE!
EDIT: thx to Kurhan

The 40 Strength will stack up very slow , as the weapon has a 3,7s speed and only 20% chance to trigger the effect .
The effect will stack up in 3,7x50=185 seconds on average - affected by haste ! . The effect will give a buff for 60 seconds ( as of now, 30/11/09 ) that stacks and refreshes duration each time you gain a new Soul Fragment.
( b4 downrating the 185 seconds average time to get the stack to 10 remember that a 20% chance to proc a thing on a long run will proc the thing each 5th swing - on AVERAGE .. just like a shaman's Windfury )
Even if a weapon is 3.7s speed, special attacks mean you are attacking almost every second. The weapon states "your weapon swings" which would include heroic strike, slam, whirlwind etc for warriors. I would expect the shards to get used up quite quickly in a raid environment.
Just a pity for fury warriors that it is unique :p

After you have attained all 50 shards, you get to harvest 1000 souls with the axe (just kill 1000 mobs in ICC on either 10 or 25 man) for A feast of Souls.
The order you list for this step is different from what wowhead shows in the quest chain. The put this step after
Shadow's Edge step. Is this another PTR bug, or can you confirm the order listed in your walk through is correct?

20% proc rate believe it or not is a very HIGH PROC RATE. What your not thinking about or including is instant attacks made by the wielder can proc this as well.
Fun way to look at it, Bladestorm + Sweeping strikes. In essence the way your are stating it is to say if i auto attack, with no attack speed buffs, then it will take me approximately 185 seconds to reach a 10 stack. Fun times...
Windfury Totem (improved2/2) and Improved Icy Talons = 20% melee haste
Swift Retribution and some other class buff = 3% Melee and Spell haste.
Flurry (fury talent) = 25% melee haste
Blood Frenzy (arms talent) = 10% melee haste
So lets just says that 3.7 base attack speed, will not be their attack speed in a raid, no matter the comp.

Contrary to what most people have said, Chaos Bane does not activate on 10 stacks, but in fact on your next swing AFTER you have acquired ten stacks of the buff. Therefore when you proc a shard at 9 stacks, you will hit 10 stacks, and +400str.
Your next strike will que Chaos Bane, and unleash the shards, and your str bonus. This is a great time for Death Knights to tie up with Blood Lust, activate speed pots, trinkets, blood fury (for the orcs), and pop your Gargoyle/Dancing Rune Weapon.
If you can manage to get a hang on succesfully tying these all together you can summon a pet that will do TONS of damage.

So my Death Knight tank guildie just told me that ret pallies SHOULD NOT get this weapon because it has armor penetration. As a ret pally i laughed. For all u Ret Pallies who roll on this you are evil people! Ignore the 68 strength u could get from socketing 3 Cardinal Rubies, or the 223 strength it alredy has, this weapon is worthless because of the Armor Penetration. Plus the proc and the 114 extra crit strike rating are lame anyway. O and BTW if u roll on DPS plate as a ret pally go shoot urself, and anything with strength should go to a warrior. So in conclusion Ret Pallies should not roll on gear anymore. Ever.
Psst, Crusader Strike, Divine Storm, and auto-attacks are all physical. 35%-40% of my damage in Ret is physical and I don't even have the 2-piece T10 set bonus yet:
Lightsworn Shoulderplates
that would increase physical damage yet more. Armor Pen. is going to be very valuable to a ret pally in ICC raids.

@viror: What are you talking about? The gear change in Wrath was nowhere near as huge. Kara gear lasted until 74 blues and 78 greens, and BT/Sunwell gear was good enough to raid in. It was not at all like replacing your Blackwing Lair epics before you even got into Zangarmarsh. (by Supercool)
I thought I'd test this claim. To make things simple, I picked caster cloaks to compare:
Best BWL caster cloak:
Cloak of the Necropolis
- requires lvl 60
First TBC caster cloak rough equivalent:
Spoar-soaked Vaneer
- requires lvl 62
Best Kara caster cloak:
Stainless Cloak of the Pure Hearted
- requires lvl 70
First WotLK caster cloak rough equivalent:
Mantle of Keristrasza
- requires lvl 69
In this example, the BWL cloak lasts at least 2 lvls into TBC while the Kara cloak is already outdated the moment you can wear it. In summary, the real question should be "@Supercool: What are you talking about?"

223+110=333 (BAse Strength and Sockets and Bonus)<----------------------
333+270=663 (Base Strength, Sockets, Proc Effect And Bonus.)
663+200=863 (Beserking)
Creepily Enough, 666 AP just for wearing this.
1726 AP when procs are active
Fury Warriors with the right spec get 30% extra strength, if you do not know how this is done, you are a dumbass.
333x 30%
This is another 110 strength for a fury warrior
333+110=443 strength just for wearing this. ( As a Fury Warrior with the right spex)
Assuming that you have absolutly nothing but Bold Cardinal Rubies, Two Sovereign Dreadstones and a 21 crit 3% crit bonus, and the right enchants along with

I can see that the text says "Your weapon swings have a chance to drain a Soul Fragment granting you 30 strength. ..."
Does this mean that only this weapon's actual swings (not skills) and "Next Melee" attacks (ex:
Heroic Strike
) will have a chance of proc'ing it? So almost all classes that can use it will have pretty much the same chances of getting the buffs to stack if they're fighting a monster... outside of getting more haste or talents that provide a speed increase?

Now I'm not going to get too much into this whole "arms is the best class for this axe-discussion" paladins, death knights and warriors can obtain this axe and put it to good use as well.
Now I have yet to see what the damage proc is like, but Death Knights have Blood Presence which will up the damage by 15% and a talent "Black Ice" further increasing its damage, and the "Ebon Plaguebringer" which is probably one of the most useful death knight abilities, being able to afflict multiple targets with the equivalent of "Curse of Elements" boosting the damage even further by 13%.
Haste could also factor in on this whole thing, as how many swings you do affects how many Shadow Banes you make during a fight, both paladins and death knights put haste to better use than warriors wielding this as a 2H dps frost Death Knight you are able to increase your own haste by 5% at all times and 20% when applying Icy Touch (basically at all times as well). Paladins also get more strength from "Divine Strength" gaining 15% more strength also being able to apply BoK to themselves further increasing that by 10% they also have "Vengeance" which increases their physical and magical damage by 9% when stacked, and they keep this to a maxed stack pretty much the entire time they are in combat. Due to the nature of paladins they are epic keyboard smashers, limited only by the cooldown on their abilities, for example Crusader Strike and Divine Storm are two abilities directly affected by their weapon damage, also their seals are affected by their weapons in some cases, for example "Seal of Command" is affected by the weapon damage, and "Seal of Righteousness" is affected by weapon speed.
Clearly this axe is great for arms warriors for many reasons including the ones mentioned by the original poster.
The reasons would be the way that arms warriors utilize their weapon, they're bleed effects are affected by their weapon, they get 6% more damage with two-handers from two-handed weapon specialization, 5% more crit with axe specialization, 10% more speed with blood frenzy their bleed effects are affected by weapon damage and this is axe is the most damaging weapon thus far in the world of warcraft.
Now I'm aware you're not saying thats the "ONLY" class/race combo but you are saying it is the best class/race combo thats where you've got me confused, now I'm not saying it is the best class/race combo, I don't know what the best class/race combo is but you haven't really proven why Arms-Warrior/Orc is the class that gets the most from this axe.
If anything is clear, it is that this axe is awesome for any class capable of wielding it not just Orc warriors that have chosen to spec Arms.
Comment by
42532
So basically..
Death Knights can gain:
Blood presence:
15% more damage.
Black Ice:
10% shadow damage.
Ebon Plaguebringer:
13% more magic damage and 3% crit at all times.
Improved Icy Talons:
20% haste when applying Icy Touch, 5% haste at all times.
Merciless Combat:
12% more damage when target is below 35% health.
Blood Gorged:
10% more damage when you are above 75% health.
Two-Handed Weapon Specialization:
4% more damage with twohanders.
Bone Shield:
2% more damage.
Annihilation:
3% crit with all abilities.
Dark conviction:
5% crit.
Also several talents that increase critical strike chance and critical strike damage on certain abilities.
Death Knight abilties affected by weapon.
Blood Strike.
Heart Strike.
Plague Strike.
Scourge Strike.
Frost Strike
Death Strike.
Obliterate.
Blood Caked Blade.
Necrosis.
So from reading this, the argument seems a lot bigger than what it seemed at first doesn't it?
And I'm not saying that Death Knights would put this weapon to its best use in their hands, I'm simply saying that we all will put this weapon to a good use, and in the end I think it relies more on the player that wields it rather than what class/spec/race he is. Giving an arms warrior priority on shards for this weapon would be a waste if the warrior was less skilled than the other guy, a person that does not maximize their performance will never perform as well as a good, skilled and concentrated player.

To answer all the people asking about it, no, as of 3/15/2010, no one has managed to create a Shadowmourne.
Sindragosa, the last boss of the infusion quests, was implemented on 2/2/2010. Since then, there have been 6 total dungeon resets.
We CAN estimate the max # of shards anyone could have by now, but this requires mathematically impossible conditions. Let's look anyway.
Situation 1: Max Shards
A) The individual had already completed both the Putricide and Blood Queen attempts.
B) The guild in question killed the Lich King the first week he was available, and continued to clear the instance after each reset.
The first week Sindragosa was available, you had to clear to her. At that point, you could potentially get the Sindragosa infusion, then kill the plague wing (3 bosses), Blood wing (2 bosses), and the Lich King.
Max Shards after week 1: 6
ICC Has 12 bosses in it, so you could potentially attain 12 shards per week (Mathematically impossible, since even on heroic the drop rate is not 100%... but let's go with it.)
Max Shards after week 2: 18
Max Shards after week 3: 30
Max Shards after week 4: 42
Assuming this drop rate (again, mathematically impossible) it would have been possible for someone to attain Shadowmourne after killing 9 bosses in week 5 (March 2nd - March 8th).
Situation 2: Realistic shards
Now, if we throw in drop rates... it severely affects our numbers. Drop rate on normal-difficulty kills is 37.5% (25-50% = 37.5% average probability). Now, actual probability will obviously deviate from this, but let's just go with it.
Drop rate on Heroic difficulty is reportedly 74% (50-99% = 74% average). Again, deviation possible, etc.
To assemble a realistic idea, we can apply these probabilities to the to the future kills.
Week 1, 6 potential shards X .375 (probability for ez mode, since they couldn't be heroic kills) = 2.25, we'll round down to 2.
Shards after week 1: 2
In week 2, the best guilds cleared 11/12 Hard modes. LK Has yet to be killed on heroic, so we'll use the 74% probability for 11, and assume a shard from LK every 3 weeks.
Week 2: 8 shards (10 total)
Week 3: 8 shards (18 Total)
Week 4: 9 shards (1 from LK, 27 total)
Week 5: 8 shards (35 total)
Week 6: 8 shards (43 total)
Since we are currently still in week 6, it's statistically VERY unlikely anyone will have a Shadowmourne by now. That said, it's possible we will see one either tomorrow or Wednesday (3/16 or 3/17, beginning of Week 7), and we should definitely see the first Shadowmourne by week 8 (3/23).
As for me... 15 shards and counting. (I'm in a casual guild).
We can probably expect to see Shadowmourne numbers explode pretty rapidly in a month or two, as more casual players obtain the shards needed.... and since ICC as a whole will be ridiculously easy to complete once the 30% buff is implemented. Also, this may even open up the possibility (if not the probability) of even the truly casual players picking up Shadowfrost Shards from PUGs.

The only thing I dislike about this weapon and most of WoW's weapons, is that it totally puts the other ones out of business. I mean if you're level 80 and could have any weapon, there is no choice. It's this one. It really makes you feel epic I guess having this, but I think they should have more balanced weapons to a certain level. Like maybe other weapons that are just as powerful as this, but in different ways.
I also gotta wonder what casters are going to do once this thing becomes used a lot. I mean it seems like it will really buff up any melee class that has their hand on this, and casters can only make their spells so much more powerful. (The new level 85 cap should help... but it will help melee's too).

For a Ret Paladin, it takes about 5 seconds to get the 30 strength up to 10, and then Chaos Bane goes off.
The stacking strength adds up to be about 155 strength average for 5 seconds, and then the 270 strength for 10 seconds (you can't stack it while Chaos Bane is up).
For Ret, you can assume the value of the proc is 155 *1/3 + 270*2/3 =~215 strength plus 2100 shadow every 15 seconds = 140 dps. For Ret strength is ~2.2 dps, so 613 dps just from the special ability.

And to be even clearer on why Arms Warriors and Orcs would love this it is because Arms Warriors get Poleaxe Specialization and Orcs get Axe Specialization therefore, an Orc Arms Warrior gets 5% more crit and 5 more Expertise (about 41 Rating) than other race/class combinations.
But, also don't think I'm saying this is for ONLY that race/class combination, just that that combination gets a lot more than others for just having it equipped.
Just wait till cata when we can have something like
THIS
on a orc warrior. by the way i was not being realistic just going for the end result of
titans
+
poleaxe specialization
+
orc racial
= total pwnage =O but of course rather stupidly, i forgot about the (supposedly
MAJOR
) changes to racials. the link above may no longer exist :(

one tanking sword
,
one
caster dps,
one ranged DPS
,
one healer mace
, and
thr
ee
melee
dps
weapons.
And Shadowmourne is pretty similar to Sulfuras in terms of stat distribution, so it seems that circle is full and goes on.
Blizz, make next SPDPS legendary not a staff, but a dagger or sword, and if latter, sheathe it at the back.

Comment by

Screencaps and the 3D model viewer do it no justice. In game it IS superior to the 'Frostmourne' that blizz is teasing us with. I think that most of the arguments that people are (stupidly?) making about it is due to the teaser having a measly 2 more stamina than Shadowmourne. My point being that anyone who would rather have the trinket that blizz is teasing us with doesn't know squat about WoW. Anyways, yes this IS the best weapon in the game (for the classes that can use it at least) and WILL last well into Cataclysm. Just in case no one has figured it out yet, the stat changes that are coming with Cataclysm will also affect EXISTING items. Yes, that will mean that most likely this very weapon will boast a ridiculous amount of both stam and strength. Say what you will, but come that time, you can expect Shadowmourne to holds it's own just fine! :)

I just got mine but since I changed my interface right when I got my Shadowmourne I'm wondering if I don't get any LK whisps because of a bug.
It would be kind of a "vanity downgrade" to lose the whispers, which are kind of fun and unique IMHO !

This is the eighth permanent legendary weapon to be added to the game, and the second level 80 legendary
Vanilla
Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
Atiesh, Grand Staff of the Guardian
Burning Crusade
Warglaive of Azzinoth (MH)
Warglaive of Azzinoth (OH)
Thori'dal, The Stars' Fury
Wrath of the Lich King
Val'anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings
It surprises me that nobody mentioned that from the above legendary`s the Atiesh is the only one who can not be obtained anymore as the instance naxx from vanilla is reused for Wotlk and with that the atiesh was removed from game at least to obtain it
Unlike with the others who are as of now still obtainable dunno if this will change in cataclism

I'm of the opinion that Legendary weapons should scale with the level of the player, much like BOA heirlooms do. The mechanic already exists in the game now.
Obtaining them still required a herculean effort to obtain, may even be regarded as feats of strength, and when seen in game evoke pangs of nostalgia for old skool accomplishments.
Legendary weapons won't be any less legendary if they were permitted to scale like heirlooms.
But meh, im a player, not a dev.

DPS progression for top two-handers since Vanilla.
Lv 60: 95.3 DPS (Lv 89)
Lv 70: 148.8 DPS (Lv 164)
Lv 80: 347.8 DPS (Lv 284)
Lv 85: 703.6 DPS (Lv 372) with less than 2 weeks in.
I remember late original Naxx weapons still being on a par with Lv 70 blues but easily getting replaced with Heroic and Kara epics. This has become less and less true for subsequent expansions, with a sword like Apolyon likely being replaced in your mid 70's and Lv 80 stuff becoming obsolete even earlier.
I predict a two hander exceeding 1000 DPS from Deathwing on Heroic.

I think a really good reason to go for this weapon (even tho it looks like trash compared to other Legendarys and besides the feat of strength acheve) is to go for the chest that LK drops on 25, it can only drop if someone in raid has shadowmourne equiped.
Inside the chest worth mentioning is a very nice, red "dk", mount and a very very nice tabard.
and if you are not interested in these, they are not Bind on pickup but insead Bind on Use

Salvaged Chain Gloves
Well If you want to get this Axe you'll have to do Some things
First:Buy the 25 saronites 5500 justice points, then kill Rotface and festergut.
Second:You have to bring 5-10 persons and kill 50 trash hiting all of them with the ShadowEdge
Third:The infusion are difficult.
Unholy infusion:You have to use the abomination and when you have 100 energy and the boss is in 50% or something like that you use the infusion(Buttons 4)
Blood infusion:You have to aproach the tank to be target of blood mirror then your team doesnt have to dps because if they dont do it you'll get the first bite then bite 3 times and kill the queen
Frost infusion:You'll have to get hit by 4 Breaths and kill the boss
Fourth:Shards:You'll have to hunt the shards at 25 heroic for 5-10 weeks and you will get it
Pd:In drakkari full of noobs i only managed to get Two Shadow frost shards and im sad D=

Since Cataclysm has come out this axe is easy to get, run ICC 25 man to get the bloods, run cataclysm normal to get enough justice points to buy the primordial saronites or buy them off auction house if they are up. Getting light's vengence is easy as hell...Hardest part for getting shadowmourne is going to be getting the bloods and then killing all the bosses after that.

SPAR'S GUIDE TO
Shadowmourne
INFUSION QUESTS - HOW TO
(
explained simply)
*
ALL INFUSIONS MUST BE DONE WITH
Shadow's Edge
EQUIPPED AND YOU MUST NOT DIE AT ANY POINT DURING THE ENCOUNTERS
*
UNHOLY INFUSION - PROFESSOR PUTRICIDE
Unholy Infusion
During the encounter control the
ABOMINATION
by clicking on the table where Putricide is standing.
Your goal is to gain 100 ENERGY BY SOAKING THE OOZE FROM THE FLOOR
then upon getting 100 energy you click the button marked
SHADOW INFUSION
and is a
4 SECOND CAST.
The easiest way to drink the ooze is stand right in the centre of the puddle and spam 1 until the puddle is gone. Once you have completed the cast and gained the buff you now have
6 MINUTES TO KILL PP.
The cast of Shadow Infusion is best saved for final few %% near the final phase shift (roughly 50% you want to cast this)
Once it hits phase 3 avoid taking damage by standing away from PP.
BLOOD INFUSION - BLOOD QUEEN LAN'ATHEL
Blood Infusion
During the encounter you have
TWO TASKS
TASK 1
Gain the buff
BLOOD MIRROR
this is gained by standing with the tank as they engage BQL. Once you have gained this buff, move away so the OT then gains it. Once the blood mirror buff is cleared you gain a de-buff called
GUSHING WOUND
Gushing Wound
TASK 2
You must now become a
VAMPIRE
to do this you must be the
FIRST PERSON TO GET BITTEN
(first bite is 15 seconds after you engage her) or
BE THE SECOND PERSON BITTEN
(otherwise if your group is filled with 85's your dps and timing for bites will be lost and she will be dead) then you must
BITE 3 PEOPLE
Once the buff
THIRST QUENCHED
Thirst Quenched
is gained you have
6 MINUTES TO KILL HER
*Note, the buff sometimes does not appear, so once you know you have bitten 3 people it is fine to burn her down*
To make getting the bites easier, split the raid into two groups. left side of the room PEOPLE WHO WANT THE BITE. and right side of the room PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT THE BITE. Assign one person to DPS from the start that way they can concentrate on biting you. Also at certain points you may need to call out for DPS to stop. Vent is extremely handy for this.
FROST INFUSION - SINDRAGOSA
Frost Infusion
During this encounter you need to get hit by Sindragosa's
FROST BREATH
Frost Breath
4 TIMES
you will gain a stacking buff called
Frost Infusion
which will stack
4 TIMES
upon reaching your 4th stack of this you will gain a buff called
Frost-Imbued Blade
you now have
6 MINUTES TO KILL SINDRAGOSA
In order to complete this with the most ease wait until her Second Landing happens.
Sindragosa is permanently grounded at 35%
Each Frost Breath is cast every 20 seconds, (you need roughly 80 seconds of total time to gain the 4 buffs) You need to start gaining buffs after her FIRST AIR PHASE. That way you can gain at least 3 breath stacks before she reaches p3, in the final phase gain 1 more stack of breath and infuse the weapon then stay away from the raid, make sure you pop all your CD's to keep alive and always have 1 healer looking after you.
I was mounted the entire fight on my warrior during this stage with full frost resistance gear equipped and I stayed that way until she was dead.
THE SPLINTERED THRONE -
The Splintered Throne
YAY! You're on the last quest now but this is the pain in the ass part. Due to most people these days generally not having any skill whatsoever, this part becomes hard if you cannot find reliable players to farm heroic modes for your
Shadowfrost Shard
Shadowfrost Shard
Have a very good drop chance regardless of being on Normal or Heroic
NORMAL - 25% - 49% PER BOSS
HEROIC - 50% - 99% PER BOSS
From these percentages you can then roughly workout how many clears/weeks it will take.
Normal Mode Clears
- 11 weeks
HM 10/12 Clears
- 5 weeks
BEST POSSIBLE LUCK 12/12 RUN
- 4 weeks
So you average time will be 5-11 weeks to gather all 50 shards.
Well I hope you guys enjoyed my little walkthrough, I hope it helps those who are wondering how the hell to do the infusions and farm the shards.
My best advice is take people who know what they are doing. Even if it takes weeks to set it up it will save you headaches in the long run. Good Luck and enjoy!

CyclonSword
Soul Fragment generation works off the Procs per minute system, and has a very high number of occurrences per minute. Current testing has shown that auto attacks on average generate one fragment every two seconds, and special abilities generate fragments at the same rate for a combined total of approximately one Soul Fragment every second on a single target. In AoE situations the Fragments gained per second will increase, but because not all of the players GCD's will be used to do AoE it is still unclear exactly how much faster fragments will be generated (in terms of Fragments gained per second) per target added for each class.

Here is the way to do all prequests in 1 run:
First of all get 25x
Primordial Saronite
(very easy to get in Dalaran for justice points) and
Light's Vengeance
. Also try to gather the raid yourself, so you will be the one, who rules and warn ppl that items from Rotface and Festergut are reserved.
1. To do
The Sacred and the Corrupt
just kill first 4 bosses and then Festergut and Rotface.
2. Then you need to go Frost wing for
A Feast of Souls
. Remember that you need to equip
Shadow's Edge
and hit every enemy mob to get credit for kill. Its very easy to get all 50 souls during Valithria Dreamwalker encounter on heroic mode, just run around hitting everything you see (i did it in holy spec as paladin).
3. As soon as Valithria is down and quest is complete switch to Plague wing again for
Unholy Infusion
.
4. Continue to Blood wing for
Blood Infusion
. Just make sure you are either bitten first or second. Make ppl stop dps untill you get 3 bites, other way shout WIPE! like crazy.
5. Last step is Frost wing for
Frost Infusion
. Here is also tricky part. Its easy to fail even on HM. Make ppl stop dps before P3 and wait for 4 stacks.
Aaaaand... enjoy your first
Shadowfrost Shard
from LK! And all in your first run there!

Shadowmourne hungers...
Comment by
984538
That comment about Shadowmourne being a Hunter weapon was a funny joke. It was a joke, right? Because if it wasn't, we have someone in the room that really epitomizes the term "Huntard", folks. Classes would take priority on this item as follows, Warriors, Death Knights, Paladins. Hunters are the last viable class that might want this and even then, there's a lot better choices for Hunters. First of all, melee weapons are to Hunters as range weapons are to Warriors. A hunter would get this solely for it's armor penetration. Does anyone see warriors going around killing people with bows? No, you don't because a Warrior can't kill someone with a bow.
I'm sure you had a lot of newbies fooled, thinking Hunters actually had any priority over this weapon. Warriors have priority over this weapon not only because every single stat, slot, proc of this item compliments a Warrior's needs. This weapon is also a K.O hitter. Those bleed effects Mr. Huntard was talking about is most affected by weapon damage, not attack power, not strength. Weapon damage is the source of bleed effects. I hope to God those likes are for a laughable comment and not a "Oh yeah, I agree with this." comment.

If i may interject id like to point out that this(as well as all other legendaries) cannot be xmogged. This is strange because of all the weapons that you would like to obtain the look of you would think that legendaries, in my opinion, would be the most sought after. They are still used by twinks but those who have them gathering dust in their bank should have a use for them again. If anyone shares my opinion of xmogged legends please reply.

I am secretly hoping that, in MoP, we will be able to raise the ilvl of this, and other legendaries to make them viable weapons again.

This is really easy these days. The "hardest" part of this quest is imo the blood infusion due to pugs having a problem lissening, but when you are looking for people tell them that quests are being done and that they need to listen to your orders so you can get your quests done. For the shard farming part its a faceroll, it's extremely easy and can be done with few people on 25 HC i would recommend atleast 15 ppl or more just cause of the fact that it will be slow if your group is too small! Good luck with your shadowmourne!

For me the guides for the infusions were bit lacky and too "explainative" and made the targets easy missable.
My thoughts for MoP and farmers.
- You can enter nowadays in party, though if you are bringing friends set the raid before you go in or it will bug and others cant enter and trash will reset when you then try to change it.
1. Farm the rep honoured (trash from start 25man is easy if you are a tank class), so you get the quest.
2. Get quest for 25x
Primordial Saronite
and
Light's Vengeance
(LV is from the cave so get it be fore you start do other stuff inside).
3. Kill Rotface and Festergut for the bloods in
The Sacred and the Corrupt
4. Kill trash untill you get 50 kills for
A Feast of Souls
, remember to equip your cool
Shadow's Edge
5. Get
Unholy Infusion
from start. Putricide: Equip
Shadow's Edge
, drink stuff from table ->
you a construct, drink pools untill u get 90 (or was it 100 power for construct), press the extra button to infuse SE
-> Kill the boss untill your buff runs out.
6. Back to start and get
Blood Infusion
. You need to
get bitten by the boss and bite 3 other players
. You can bite every 60sec. Once you have the infusion buff, kill boss before it runs out.
+ If you doing with minimal group you can use 3 resses -> 4-5 is enough.
+ 2 first in threat are concidered tanks, 3rd person is bitten when the fights first bite comes from boss.
+ Bite someone and let him die untill he has to bite (fires easy way to commit suicide there)
7. Pickup
Frost Infusion
. Engage boss, be a tank and/or
stand in front of him eating breath -> stack to four
and kill boss before your buff runs out.
Done!
Notes:
+
Shadowfrost Shard
doesn't always drop from LK even in HC.
+ Shards since started: 1 + 7 + 8 + 7
+ 6 + 7 + 8 + 6
+ For the grinding parts, you can kill all bosses in 25HC with 3ppl now in MoP except: Putricide because of the buff at HC and Lich King cause valkyrs will kill your buddies and dps at the start of MoP isn't enough to finish him (1tank&healer+3dps is enough for us to push him to 40% to change phase and valkyrs drop victims to the spawned edge and nobody dies).
If you got 3 ranged DPS and bloodlust on first transition you get to skip valkyrs and boss will be 15%-20% easily, atleast for us.
+ Marrowgar need 2 in HC if you are not a goblin/worgen/panda(?) because you get impaled and die. Even when 2-manning one must be one of the new races to open other. If you bring 3, you wont get impaled during bonestorm though..
Updated shard count, all weeks we killed all but 2 bosses on heroic (Putricide normal due dot and Lady Deathwhisper from which my friend still needs transmog from normal mode)

After almost three long years of farming Shadowmourne, I finally got it last night, April 10th 2013. I will give you some tips and tricks, plus statistics on how I got Shadowmourne personally.
First of all, this is NOT easy to get, even in Mists of Pandaria, it is still one of the HARDEST legendaries to obtain, and once you start, you need to finish.
I killed a total of 116 ICC Bosses from Start to Finish, this means this took me close to 17 weeks (real time) of hard-grinding to get this weapon, not counting the wipes and failures, and breaks on top of that.
The first quest you will receive to start the quest chain will require, 25 Primordial Saronites (this can be purchased with Justice Points in Dalaran if you cannot buy them off the AH), Light's Vengeance (after an Elite Scenario that has to be solo'd), and Rotfaces + Festerguts bloods (only drops on 25 Man).
The next part will require you to kill 50 NPCs (Trash or Boss). This is significantly easier than it was for me, which I had to kill 1,000 Souls, so be grateful lol.
The next part is the three infusions, in order: Unholy, Blood, and Frost.
Unholy is straight forward, collect the pools, once you have enough energy, use the infusion, and then you are finished with Unholy Infusion.
Blood Infusion is straight-up hell. You need to be the first (preferably) or second one bit then you need to bite three people, AND kill the boss for the infusion to finish. This comes extremely close to the Berserk timer, so you need to have coordination.
Frost Infusion defies all past raiding instructions. For this one, the fire = candy. Eat the Candy, and it's game.
Finally, you get to go into ICC25/25H and get to go fetch 50 Shards for 4+ Weeks, and last but not least, kill The Lich King, and get pretty loots.

well, since its a weapon from Wotlk:
Frost DK: gems are strength
Unholy DK: gems are strength
Blood DK: gems are indeed: Arp, so for Wotlk players = Shadowmourne a perfect weapon.
and as you said some spells/attack already ignore armor....
But Hunters need 1400 Arp in Wotlk 3.3.5a but they also have spells/attacks which stock ignore armor.
conclusion: Perfect weapon for Death Knights in Wotlk
(since warriors do physical damage also perfect for warriors)
(for paladins, i can tell for sure, but i'd say it's a very nice weapon,
else it wouldnt be restricted to these 3 classes ^^)

I would love to see this weapon back.
Why they create so wonderful weapon for only a few months of use and then leave it in the inventory? With Item Squish that await us in the next expansion, they should breath a life into these weapons.
Upgrade them with valor points, other weapon, quests, scale them like heirloom or whatever, but make them come back. Those weapons, which requires months of quest grinds and have quest stories deserves it.
That feeling, when purple flash comes out from your weapon to steal opponents soul, can't be compensated, not even with transmogrification.

Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
Warglaive of Azzinoth
&
Warglaive of Azzinoth

I know it's late, but this weapon really shouldn't have been given to paladins. I know the gameplay reason they did it, but I'm pretty sure you'd lose connection to the light for the sins you must commit to make this axe. Again, I understand the gameplay reasons, but I think paladins should've just gotten something different. Perhaps a Mace version of Ashbringer?

A tip. If you like being godlike in bg's, arenas and like playing a fury warrior I STRONGLY advise you to:
Step 1: Level up a warrior to 80.
Step 2: Start gearing your character up by doing Ruby Sanctum 25hc and ICC25hc runs, starting the
Shadowmourne questline
is essential and so is getting Deathbringer's Will trinket from Deathbringer Saurfang 25hc and Sharpened Twilight Scale 25hc.
Step 3: Start farming Eye of Sulfuras and get the mats for Sulfuron Hammer in order to craft
Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
Useful info:
Old t10 set bonuses are gone and now only gives you a 5% physical damage increase + an all damage done increase by 5% which isn't worth going for as those extra gem sockets you get from ICC25hc gear is a lot more effective
(DO NOT GO FOR PANDARIA BOE's
, they are extremely bad after 6.0!). PvP gear is useless now as with the resilience today would only give you about 20% anyway even if you're fully geared. You wan't to gem pure critt with an activated meta gem and enchant full mastery. Remember to buy the new WoD enchants, they work.
Farm long enough and eventually you will have a character dual-wielding 2h legendaries where both are actually BiS.
- "How is the Sulfuras handy? It's for lvl 60's?"
Here's what's wonderfull. For all characters level 80-89 the gear and weapons scales to 429, meaning it's not enough with a FREAKIN SHADOWMOURNE but you also have a FREAKIN SULFURAS with best ilvl in that level-range + all you're gems, enchants, ICC reputation ring, and trinkets.
I have done this with a lvl 80 DK but since DK's can't dual-wield 2 2h's I only got him Shadowmourne as it's more powerfull than Sulfuras and the farm for the eye is just a pain. For my warrior, I have managed to farm a Sulfuras and am currently missing 14 shadowfrost for Shadowmourne so it's soon time for not only #rekt which I would define my playing as at the moment but #UGOTREKTSON.
Hope this encourages people to atleast try. It's an extremely lot of work, and leveling is to be honest nothing compared to the rest.

Yesterday I started on my new DK the quest chain. Here's an easy to-do step by step to receive (hopefully) a Shadowfrost Shard in your first reset. Be sure to have always on 25 normal, and you have the axe in your hands when doing Infusion quests.
-Buy 25 Primordial Saronite (you can buy at Dalaran vendor, but propably cheaper from AH)
-Set 25 normal, go into ICC, pick up the quest from Mograine
-Go to the cave in Crystalsong and loot the hammer
-Kill first 4 bosses, then go for Rotface and Festergut. Kill them, loot their bloods.
-Hand in this quest, pick up next.
-Now go and clear either Valithria's trash+the trash before Blood Council.(you can as well kill them now)
-Hand in the 50 soul quest, pick up Unholy Infusion.
-Go to Prof. Putricide, equip your Shadow's Edge, pull, do some damage to him. Let him cast 3-4 slime puddle, then pop Army of the Dead, then click on the table asap, spam 1-1-1-1-1-1-1, until you can cast 6. Leave the mutation and kill the boss, you have a 6 min buff on you if you did everything right.
-Hand in quest, got Blood infusion.
-Now you need a shaman, to be honest, any level can do who can join ICC, but the easiest is something around 90. (We did both with a 85 and a 90 shaman, both in heirlooms). Use Raise Ally glyph on the dk, go blood, if you see the damage is high, set Conversion talent. This is the trickiest part, we did with the following tactic: Shaman gone resto, Earth shield on himself, you pull the boss, damage her to ~80%, then wait for first bite. Shaman just heal himself. You bite shaman, shaman then dies. Wait until there's about 5-10 sec left from next bite, then cast Raise Ally on shaman. He shouldn't accept now, because boss is in the air, doing heavy damage. When she fly down, accept res, you bite him again. He now should die (85-90s die faster :) ). Then wait until next bite, be sure not to use Reincarnation when shes in the air. Then shaman res, you bite 3rd time, then you get a buff again for 6 min, then you can kill the boss.
-Hand in quest, pick up Frost infusion.
-This is now easy, and you can solo from here again, just stand before Sindragosa, let her cast the breath on you, you'll see 2 debuff, 1 is the normal breath with timer and 1 is your what has only stacks, but no timer. After 4th breath this debuff go, you'll get again the 6 min buff to kill the boss. Do it now.
-Hand in quest, pick up the collecting part.
-Set to heroic, kill the Lich King, loot your first Shadowfrost Shard (if you're lucky), cross finger's for Invincible's Reins , and receive instead Music Roll: Invincible

It is possible to do every quest except
The Splintered Throne
collection quest in
one lockout
. I attempted to do this quest chain with a boosted character, so I had to start everything from scratch.
Start with lots of room in your bags. You'll need to get naked a few times for these quests. Grab 25x
Primordial Saronite
from either the random dusty corner of your bank or buy from the auction house. You can also buy them from a vendor for 120g each in Dalaran or ICC if you're exalted with Sunreavers or the Silver Covenant, but the AH is usually cheaper.
Set your raid instance to
25-man Heroic
. First, you need to reach friendly with the Ashen Verdict. Clear trash up to Morrowgar, then run out and reset. Takes ~45 minutes to an hour in 7.3.2 with a human character. Reset the instance one more time.
Start the quest line:
The Sacred and the Corrupt
When you get back from collecting
Light's Vengeance
, start making your way through the instance
avoiding traps and as much trash as possible
. Save them for the next step! You can safely complete the following encounters on your way to getting
Festergut's Acidic Blood
and
Rotface's Acidic Blood
:
Lord Marrowgar
Lady Deathwhisper
Gunship Armory
Deathbringer Saurfang
DO NOT KILL
Professor Putricide
! You will need him later.
Now, you can make
Shadow's Edge
because you already have 25x
Primordial Saronite
.
It's nekked time.
A Feast of Souls
Unequip everything except
Shadow's Edge
and remove any talents that do passive damage. You cannot one shot the trash or you will not get credit. You may need resurrection sickness for this. Start at the beginning and
kill all the trash you skipped.
Good news, everyone! Time to kill the Professor!
For soloing
Unholy Infusion
I found Saeljfkklhen's comment the most helpful:
Link
. Worked like a charm, but the timing is tight so you may need to reset the encounter time or two.
The issue is that
the game treats you like a vehicle when you are transformed into something with abilities
, so the boss thinks no one is there and
treats it like a wipe and resets
. This was a problem for both
Professor Putricide
and a time or two for
Blood-Queen Lana'thel
so you will have to be careful with timing.
Time for the pièce de résistance:
Blood Infusion
YOU MUST BRING 2-3 FRIENDS for this part! Best explanation was by zadck post-7.3:
Link
My experience:
Have your next victim be closest to you so they lose some health from
Blood Mirror
Some of them may need resurrection sickness, but I didn't find it necessary.
Be ready with self-heals and a taunt.
The encounter resets if everyone is dead and you turn.
The only way to tell you're done is after
Gushing Wound
disappears from your debuffs.
Now you can put clothes on again! Hooray!
Frost Infusion
is a cakewalk after what you've just been through. Head to the Frostwing Halls and do the
Valithria Dreamwalker
encounter, then head toward
Sindragosa
. Simply aggro her and get in her face for 4x
Frost Breath
. If your friends are still around, keep spread apart to avoid a wipe if everyone ends up in an
Ice Tomb
.
You will see
Frost-Imbued Blade
when it's time to take her down.
Turn in your quest and you're ready to kill the Lich King and start collecting
Shadowfrost Shard
.
You must run the raid in Heroic to get the best drop rate.
Good luck!

To get friendly rank with The Ashen Verdict, you need to kill all the trash and bosses up to and including Deathbringer Saurfang (you don't have to kill all the trash around the outer spire to get to the gunship).
25
Primordial Saronite
are today quite cheap and can be bought off the AH without much gold spent.
Next, if you kill only Festergut and Rotface for the bloods while leaving the other bosses and trash up, you can do the next quest which requires you to kill 50 enemies and every Infusion quest plus get one
Shadowfrost Shard
from The Lich King in one lockout. This minimizes the time you have to spend to finish Shadowmourne slightly.
A Feast of Souls
There are more than enough trash and bosses to get this quest done in your current lockout you used to collect the reputation and bloods. If you killed the trash to get to Festergut and Rotface, don't worry, there are about 70-80 more enemies in the frost and blood quarters. Kill only the Blood Council among bosses.
The debuff on enemies which marks them to be consumed and counted for the quest will not be applied if you one shot trash. You must therefore remove all your gear except
Shadow's Edge
, and use your lowest damaging abilities such as
Death and Decay
, or
Consecration
, so that the actual debuff on the trash is applied and so that you can gain progress towards completing the quest.
Unholy Infusion
Assemble a group with 2-3 more people (if you have 2 party members instead of 3, at least one of them need to have a combat ress).
Tell your group to not damage the boss, they should only keep the aggro on the boss while you click the table to become an abomination.
Use the ability on your new actionbar to consume the slime pools when they spawn.
When your energy bar to the right has reached 100, click the Shadow's Edge icon. When the cast is completed you are given a new buff and you can now kill the boss. To make the giant die, you may need to stand in the slime pools.
Blood Infusion
This quest is why you need to have at least 2 or 3 more players in order to complete it. To prevent one-shotting the boss, remove all your gear except
Shadow's Edge
and a few armor pieces, only so that you can kill the mind controlled people later,
do not
use any trinkets that has AoE procs or they can one-shot the boss. Tell the other players to remove all their gear as well so that you and another player can kill them when they get mind controlled. Make sure that you do not use any AoE abilities while killing mind controlled people, or you can kill the boss. Tell your group to once again not to damage the boss and not to bite anyone, just let their timer expire and that they should become mind controlled after 1 minute.
You start with for example one
Death and Decay
or
Consecration
so that you get the aggro, kite her out of it so that you don't kill her. After a short time you get the debuff which increases your damage and makes you able to bite other players. After 1 minute click the only ability on your new action bar while targeting a player to bite them.
When a player dies after you kill them, combat ress them if possible.
Bite non-bitten players 3 times and then kill the boss.
Frost Infusion
As easy as the quest description says, simply stand in front of
Sindragosa
after four breaths have been soaked. Once the stacking debuff goes away you can kill the boss.
The Splintered Throne
This is the part of the Shadowmourne quest line which is the most drawn out. You simply kill all the Icecrown Citadel bosses every week in 25 normal or 25 heroic until you have collected 50
Shadowfrost Shard
. If you saved The Lich King in your first lockout, you can get one additional shard.
The Lich King's Last Stand
Kill The Lich King to get a
Sealed Chest
. Turn it in at Darion and you are given 5 items you can turn in to various NPCs at starting area to the raid.
You will be rewarded with:
Reins of the Crimson Deathcharger
,
Tabard of the Lightbringer
,
Muradin's Favor
,
Sylvanas' Music Box
and
Jaina's Locket
.

So how can you pass Feast of Souls part now having only 1 minute of Ressurection Sickness since September, 2022? :( Being naked is not enough, still oneshot trash.
Upd. Found the way for DK: Death & Decay as a ticking dot doesn't kill instantly, souls are getting collected.

So, for any of you interested in grinding the shards for Shadowmourne, I just completed the grind for it (today) and made a simple table... A visual, so you can see what you're getting yourself into.
It took a total of 10 weeks. Each vertical column represents each week and the number of shards dropped. I hope you can understand the chart as I'm still learning how to put data into code.
