A Fortnight in Dalaran: Farming Northrend Mounts and Pets

4 Reputation grinds; 1 offers a mount, 1 offers a pet, the other a RNG chance at 1 mount or 4 seperate pets every 3 days, and the last has 2 of the most expensive mounts in the game

5 pretty long and challenging achievements (and 2 very fast ones) which require multiple passes at the same instances and some cannot be done solo

low chance random drops from Dungeons, Raids, Quests and Fishing

visiting 1 of the most expensive Vendors in the game

The Argent Tournament; ~85 days of Dailies to get all the mounts and another ~20 days (or a lot of gold) for all the pets!

UPDATE:This guide was originally written in the long-long ago, before Account Wide and the massive power creep over old content we now have. Any lvl110 player will cruise through this guide solo except for a few achievements.
Some of the language now seems archaic, but I have tried to update any changes that have happened in the past five years and three expansions:

Made the Rewards section more prominent
Updated my own stats
Note that most of the pets are now available on the Auction House, and you can use Alts to speed things up and do multiple runs
There are no longer any Justice or Honor Points but you can buy Commendations with Timewarped Badge

Prep

This guide assumes you are lvl85 and have a lvl300 flying mount (and Cold Weather Flying); it can be done a little earlier if you are keen (but is so much faster at 85).

Check your Northrend rep; you have probably made inroads for quite a few of the Factions you will want to finish off. Mounts and Pets will be BoA so pick the alt who is furtherest along any of the long grinds

You will need a Fishing skill of 430 if you want to try and fish up Giant Sewer Rat

Having a Ring of the Kirin Tor is a great way to get to Dalaran and will free you up to Hearth somewhere else around Northrend (I'd consider the Argent Tournament, Grizzly Hills or Sholazar Basin)

Engineers with Wormhole Generator: Northrend will also free up some travel time

Empty your bags; while at times you'll need to buff, bandage, eat or drink you are going to be collecting a heap of trash. Having a Reins of the Traveler's Tundra Mammoth or Jeeves is very useful! (And this guide covers how to get both)

A good team you can trust

Oh, Isn't this adorable! Back when written 25man was still a bit of a struggle for some, not so anymore...
This is probably going to be the most difficult part for some. You need to find some friends/guildmates who are as keen as you are and can go the distance. You also need to be able to trust them not to ninja any mounts and be patient enough to wait their turn.

You are probably going to need varying size groups; almost all of the Dungeon Meta can be done solo or in a pair. The standard 10man Raids would be safer with 3 players, whereas the 25man Heroics are going to be difficult to do with less than 10 (ha!). At the very least I would say to go with a core group of 3 and then Guild/PUG more as you need them; you will at least get a fair way through most of this guide and will only need to repeat the guaranteed drops 3 times to make everyone happy.

It is assumed you are all ilvl365 as a minimum; every member needs to be able to pull 10K DPS without breaking a sweat. Healers/Tanks should consider going for hybrid specs that allow them to heal while still pulling or doing DPS (healers will get bored in the Dungeons really quickly unless they start dishing out damage).

Benchmarks and Expectations:
3 man team:
Should be 2 x "Tank" and 1 x "Healer".

Can do almost all of Glory of the Hero easily

Can possibly do all of Glory of the Ulduar Raider (10 player) and make a start on Glory of the Icecrown Raider (10 player)

Can probably do all 10 man raids

Needs to pull 42K DPS (and heals) to beat OS3D 10man

Needs 50K DPS to beat I Could Say That This Cache Was Rare (10 player)

Add at least 1 ranged DPS to your 2 x "Tank" and 1 x "Healer"

Can do all of Glory of the Hero

Can do all 10 man raids

Can probably do all of Glory of the Ulduar Raider (10 player) but may struggle a little for Glory of the Icecrown Raider (10 player)

Needs to pull 127K DPS (and heals) to beat 0S3D 25man

Needs 180K DPS to beat I Could Say That This Cache Was Rare (25 player)

2 x Tank, 2 x Healer, at least 4 x ranged DPS

Will need to split in 2 for Glory of the Hero

Will fly through all the 10 man raids

Can probably get Glory of the Ulduar Raider (25 player), but may be pushing it for Glory of the Icecrown Raider (25 player)

Be aware that the weakest 25 man Heroic Boss will have ~25M hit points, so if your group is pulling "above par" DPS of 150K it is still going to take 3 minutes to burn them down; the Lich King himself will take almost 12 minutes.

Human for Diplomacy

Paladin for tanking, heals, and access to two extra mounts not available to other classes

with Engineering of 450 and Tailoring of 425

Visit your mutated monkey-fish-squirrel friends and do the Dailies on offer there

Hearthstone back to Dalaran

Fly to Gretchen Fizzlespark in K3 and get They Took Our Men! to start your The Sons of Hodir grind.

Along the way you will hang out in Brunnhildar Village for a bit and impress Gretta the Arbiter enough that she will start offering Daily Quests which have a chance to reward Reins of the White Polar Bear from Hyldnir Spoils. Make sure you clear all the Quests here so you can get all 4 Dailies down the track (they will become part of your rotation)
With a rep bonus you could end up either Honored or Revered with The Sons of Hodir by the time you are done.
I advise doing the Dailies they offer only if you can't afford Relic of Ulduar or Justice Points. Once past Friendly be on the lookout for Everfrost Chip which can spawn all through the Storm Peaks and is worth 350 rep a turn in
You could be Exalted in under 2 hours!

Grab your Friends and start your Dungeon Runs to get Glory of the Hero and Reins of the Red Proto-Drake I would do them in this order to reduce travel time:

Do another The Violet Hold run
Hand in your Argent Tournament daily; congratulations you are now a Valiant! So you get to do very similiar Dailies all over again
While here with your buds you may want to try Trial of the Champion; it is very hard to Solo the first phase but you will get 3 Champion's Seal and may find you want to add it do your Daily rotation
Go to Ulduar and get your Glory of the Ulduar Raider (10 player) and Reins of the Rusted Proto-Drake
Either Hearthstone back to Dalaran or camp at The Argent Tournament for the night

If you include these into your Kalu'ak or Utgarde Pinnacle Daily rotation then it is basically on the way anyway. 10-15 minutes for 150 Honor is a deal even the most dedicated flag carrier would consider. You are going to be in the area at least 28 times just while you grind The Argent Tournament alone. It will take 14 days to get the mount this way. Reins of the Black War Mammoth now costs 15Mark of Honor, so you are back to PVP again. The quests above are pointelss to do now.Ice Crown

Fly to Gretta the Arbiter keeping an eye out for Time-Lost Proto Drake along the way

If your Faction controls Wintergrasp then you can Portal from and try Vault of Archavon in the hope of Reins of the Grand Black War Mammoth dropping from any of the bosses there; I'd try this out in a group first but high end tanks with a bit of healing should be able to solo it
Hand in your Argent Tournament daily
Go to Icecrown Citadel and work towards Glory of the Icecrown Raider (10 player), Once Bitten, Twice Shy (10 player) is going to take 2 runs
Either Hearthstone back to Dalaran or camp at The Argent Tournament for the night

Go to Icecrown Citadel and finish off Once Bitten, Twice Shy (10 player)

As you will be running Icecrown Citadel a few more times yet you may be interested in trying to get Shadowmourne. The quest chain is only available to Plate wearing classes. You will need to get to Friendly with The Ashen Verdict (this requires at least 3 runs on either 10man or 25man) and then enter a 25man instance to find Highlord Darion Mograine and start The Sacred and the Corrupt.
It is going to take a few runs and a lot of gold or Justice Points to finally get to Mograine's Reunion and Reins of the Crimson Deathcharger. As it is BoE the rest of us can look to the Auction House

Get Exalted with The Oracles; it will take another 12 days to do but you can then get the best grinding trinket in the game: Oracle Talisman of Ablution

Get Exalted with everyone else; buy Commendations, do Dailies or equip/unequip Tabards when doing your Utgarde Pinnacle run.

Finish off Champion of the Frozen Wastes; who doesn't want another title?

Speaking of which; The Argent Champion is probably within your grasp

At this stage you will get A Hero's Burden and you need to be careful when doing it:
Atruis the Heartless only has 22K health; many of you can 1-2 shot him which will mean the quest won't work properly and you have to wait a whole day to do it again. You need to dismiss any pets, strip off most of your gear and slowly tap tap tap him down to 30% health.
At ~30% health you will get to choose which side you want to go with; kill whoever you DO NOT want to grind with
You now have a helper; it is not a bad idea to let him get some hits in, but you should get the Killing Blow yourself
If your helper now has Hand of the Oracles/Frenzyheart Champion AND Return of the Friendly Dryskin/Return of the Lich Hunter then you are good to go for the Dailies
If you have done it too fast then you will get a Daily but not the return to the village quest and will need to try again the next day!
You are now Honored with whoever you chose and are ~8 days away from hitting Revered (Dailies are worth 1700 per day)
If you are done with one faction and want to get Exalted with the other you only need to redo this last part again

If Reins of the Traveler's Tundra Mammoth is your main goal and you are short on gold and Timewarped Badge then wear Tabard of the Kirin Tor when doing the Heroic Dungeons

If you want Reins of the Red Drake and aren't too keen on Jousting then wear Tabard of the Wyrmrest Accord

Short on Timewarped Badge and going the distance in The Argent Tournament then wear Tabard of the Argent Crusade

As you can gain Home Faction rep in any dungeons in the game by equipping a Tabard you could choose the Northrend ones; but you forgo all the above and have forgotten that rep gains don't scale; you can get as much from running Outlands Heroics as you can Northrend ones (but they are quicker and easier)

Higher Learning took twice as long just to get that one last book compared to all the rest; and I almost missed it when it finally spawned

I bought my Reins of the Red Drake with Justice Points before doing any Heroic dungeons (doh!)

I actually own 2 Reins of the Traveler's Tundra Mammoth; won't I feel silly when Mists comes out

I don't even want to think about all the gold I spent on the BoE pets before I knew where you can get them

Skadi hates me; but he did give me his Reins of the Blue Proto-Drake after a good month of doing runs

Even with my Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole ~~I can't fish up a rat or a turtle~~ Fishing like a king!

I am a Crusader, but haven't gotten past day 32 so still have a long way to go!

~~The only two mounts I have never even seen in WOW (on any character, let alone drop)~~ I see these all the time now; Mimiron's Head and Invincible's Reins; I don't know if this gives me extra incentive or is demoralising...

The 'Week in Shattrah' guide was awesome... this one is truly amazing! Thank you so much for this. I don't know how so many people get bored later in an expansion when there's all this & more to do. :)

I know mount collecting isn't everyone's cup of tea, but for those of us who do or for anyone starting out collecting, these guides are amazing & as I put in my comment to the previous guide, you've made collecting more fun for me & less of a grind, just working my way through the guides & marking them off :)

i´d found that wowjuju´s reputation calculator offers a good way to find what´s to be done and a raw estimate of the time required to exalted. can be found at (removed) i hope it help others as it had helped me.

My turn to comment to those 2 terrific guides. Am still waitting on the 3rd one for cata and ofc an 4th for mop. It was very helpfull for my new lvl 90 ally toon which had nothing and out of boredom ive started the "one week in shattrath" which led to this one

Something important to note is about faction changes and the Argent Tournament. Not only do you lose all your reputations and have to start again, but there's a bug, where half the quests just don't become available again.

You did get me, cuz the title who suggested a forthnight in Dalaren, made me curious. I knew it can't be done in a forthnight, so I had a ball reading :

Just a few notes:

Azure Drake and Blue Drake now drop from 10 and 25, reg and heroic Eye of Eternity.

Reins of the Grand Black War Mammoth drops in 10 and 25 VoA.

Sea Turtle can now be fished up in any pool in Northrend, Cata zones (excluding lava pools I think..), Pandaria zones, and Darkmoon Faire.

Also looking forward to the Cata/MoP guides! <3

A great guide and summary.

To your comments about Mimiron's Head and Invincible, these are by far the rarest mounts in the LK xpac, but they ARE still farmable.

I ran a weekly Yogg for about 2 months with 8-12 people before we saw a Head drop. I offered 200,000 gold to whoever won the roll and the winner was willing to sell to me.

For Invincible, at an ilevel of about 530 I started soloing H LK on my hunter. On the 28th kill (so yes, over 6 months of weekly soloing) Invincible dropped.

So, these mounts are still obtainable (with some difficulty and dedication).

I will also add that they occasionally show up on Black Market Auction Hall, but every time I have seen them they capped out at 999,999 gold.

Mount hunters persevere and you will be rewarded!

Ive done a good portion of the farming mentioned, though the daily grinds suck.

Last instance lockout, though, the RNG gods smiled upon me.

11/18/2014: Invincible, after 3 attempts
11/19/2014: White Hawkstrider, after 15 attempts (not part of this guide, but still)
11/21/2014: Mimiron's Head, on FIRST attempt.

Just goes to prove, it all depends on RNG with some of the best mounts.

I just have to say how much I love and appreciate your guides. Mount and battle pet collecting are my two favorite aspects of playing WoW, and these guides have helped me so much in managing my time in each capital more efficiently and in just making the whole thing a little less overwhelming.

I've gotten almost every mount and pet on the both guides (RNG gods still keeping me from my faves) but I still come back here regularly to make sure I'm on the right track.

Both your guides are absolutely fantastic, Asakawa captures it perfectly with "Its a thing of wonder". The amount of effort and information here is incredible and I have spent many hours reading over these guides just for fun. I hope to complete them this summer when I have the time but have been really anxious about the next guide. I love Cataclysm because there are many interesting rep grinds and awesome mounts to obtain and I have been looking forward to the third installment with a ridiculous amount of excitement and it would make my year if you released it. An update about its progress would be greatly appreciated. Even if you have no intention of finishing it, an incomplete one would still be better than nothing! Reading these guides bring back a lot of nostalgia and without the third there is a lot of awesome content that we are missing out on. Again love your work and these guides and cant wait for the third!

I know this is primarily for Northrend, but for the faction specific parts of the tourney wouldn't it have been easier to get the tabards for the home factions and pump out some vanilla dungeons?

If you are stuck at (29900/36000) Hated with Sons of Hodir, you may have skipped the Slag Covered Metal quest. This drops off of Stormforged Iron Giant and will be missed if you do not loot them while completing Mending Fences. This is especially important in more recent expansions, when people tend to not loot old world mobs because of the time it takes.

Great Guide! I was confused on #2 from Day 2: "Head towards Grizzly Hills to get a blade from a Maiden in a lake"
My assumption is that this is referring to the Argent quest: The Edge Of Winter ?

If the above is correct, then first you need to go kill Lord Everblaze in Crystalsong Forest
Then you go to the lake in Howling Fjord (not Grizzly Hills): Maiden of Winter's Breath Lake

I may be completely misinterpreting the guide since I'm just getting started on it. If that's the case, please disregard and inform me of the reference!

Following this in mid 2022 and its extremely helpful. My only complaint is that this is entire guide is based around playing Alliance. Not that it makes a huge deal, but some of the NPCs listed / locations tagged are strictly for Ally only. A quick search here usually identifies the Horde counterpart fairly easily, but it would be nice to have these address both factions.

First, I love your guides.

Now, I don't know if it was always the case but the last boss of Trial of the Champion in Normal drop a Champion's Seal.

Since you can reset Normal instance and do them 10 times per hour, you can do more more than 17 Champion's Seal per day.

Technically, "if you didn't sleep" you could get 242 Champion's Seal (239 from Normal (24 hour * 10 - 1 for the heroic run) + 3 from Heroic) per day only from the instance, so 256 in total.
