Best tank weapon, best Fury MH weapon, not a bad Rogue weapon but you could do better.

Tobias
This weapon is obtained from Molten Core by collecting both left and right half of "Bindings of the Windseeker" which drop from respectively Baron Geddon and Garr in Molten Core.
This then starts a long quest chain which involves killing Thunderaan the Windseeker in Silithus.

I was lucky enough to get Thunderfury on my Rogue, and I absolutely love it.
Admittedly, this item should go to Warriors in the first instance, if they plan on using it to tank. The proc does generate quite a lot of threat, but it is nothing too unmanageable for a Rogue to negate through the usage of Feint and Vanish.
I was lucky enough to get the Bindings due to the fact that we already had a Warrior with Thunderfury already. Took me a long while to get them though - at least 12 months, doing Molten Core almost every week!

My Guilds main tank has this, got it over a couple of months damn lucky and about 5k gold....Bloody worth it IMO. I believe you also need a BWL run I think to learn to smelt the bars I think.
Against the end bosses Ony, Rag etc it is hard to take aggro off him. If a Main tank can get it your raiding end game content just became a hell of alot easier.
It works very well for us.

The warrior/rogue debate has now become a moot point, being this close to TBC release.
While this weapon will grab aggro on clusters of mobs, a rogue shouldn't be able to grab boss aggro from a good prot warrior. TBC is featuring far better, non-legendary, weapons for Tanks and as thus, this weapon can safely be given to a rogue.
To strengthen this point. Once a Tank gets his hands on a +def weapon doing 89 DPS, he'll never again use his TF in PVE. Therefore, the raid just lost the proc... In this case, if a rogue had it, they could continue to off-hand it to keep the proc around for the guild.

Understand though, should a main tank get this weapon, he will generate more threat and allow in turn the whole raid to do more dps without the risk of pulling aggro, sure giving it to a rogue is understandeable, there is no problem with that. The guild decides who it goes to. However i feel the tanks will be able to generate more threat, and allow everyone else to do more DPS. Btw this weapon is amazing at DPS and threat generation!

I don't know who'd actually even consider crafting it now, with TBC around the corner. The costs are pretty steep and chances are you'll replace it in the not too distant future.
Maybe if you have tons of gold (*coughcough*) and just want it for the shiny legenardy factor, but else... why bother.

A once very rare weapon. Now obtained by luck. I've seen warriors, rogues, paladins, and even a hunter with Thunderfury. These days most guilds are in Naxx. Warriors have Widows Remorse, rogues have other Naxx weapons. Short story; Many guilds just give this out to whoever is crazy enough to spend almost all of their DKP on it.
The reason why a lot of warriors don't take this weapon is due to the fact that it costs a fortune to craft. Warriors already pay a buttload of money towards repairs after raids. Especially tanks. Since the sword was awarded the right to be an offhand it has become a very much wanted item by Rogues. Even though the threat from the proc is insane, most rogues can handle it.
I've seen a paladin with this sword too, he put +22 Int on it. I lol'd.
Also, I'd like to warn all hunters that want this weapon... Blizzard stated themselves it was a mistake putting them on the list. I've seen 2 guilds fall apart because they awarded a hunter with a set a lucky drop binding because he was willing to spend big DKP bucks on it. Then the tanks getting mad as they wanted it over a hunter (even though they didn't speak up when the RL asked if anyone wanted it)

My brother is trying to get this. it takes 10 elementuim bars
(this requires 1 elementuim ore, 10 arcanite bars, 1 fiery core, and 3 elemental fluxes)
the two bindings,
( they drop off Garr and Baron Geddon in molten core)
and the essence of the fire lord, which is a Ragnaros drop..

GREAT Tank weapon. Unless the instanse your in requires Crowd Control, but I know I would kill for this(not literally :P ). I have seen this so many times in the battlegrounds. Does Great in huge parties of people. Very helpful in taking nodes in Arathi Basin. Not as good in Warsong Gulch as in Arathi Basin, but it does well holding off troops in the base as your friend grabs the flag and slips out with the defenders trapped in the Wind proc.
In Alterac Vally you could do just like Arathi Basin. Maybe while Fighting Drek'Thar'Vandeer you would be holding off the Horde/Alliance Defenders WHILE tanking the evil man.
paladins and hunters whould never have been able to get this. i see no point in a hunter having anything with good melee. as for a paladin I mean come on you would benifiet more from +healing or +intellect than this sword with DPS and great proc.

Thunderaan the Windseeker quest chain:
This quest begins when you loot either the Right or Left half of the Bindings of the Windseeker, which drop off Baron Geddon and Garr in Molten Core. Upon looting one of these, you must travel to Silithus and talk with the Highlord Demetrian, who will then give you the Vessel of Rebirth, which will start the quest.
Quest: Examine the Vessel
Who: Highlord Demitrian
Starts in: Silithus
Quest Level: 70
Level to attain: 60
Items Needed: Vessel of Rebirth
Quest: Thunderaan the Windseeker (Raid)
Who: Highlord Demitrian
Starts in: Silithus
Attain: 60
Level: 63
Items Needed: 10 Elementium Bar
1 Essence of the Firelord
1 Binding of the Windseeker (left) dropped by Baron Geddon
1 Binding of the Windseeker (right) dropped by Garr
Highlord Demetrian will guide you to Earthcaller Franzahl in Winterspring, who will tell you of a Goblin named Krixix who was swallowed up by a rift in the earth while meddling with the mysteries of Elementium. It is he who holds the secrets!
Krixix is located in Blackwing Lair, of course. Elementium ore drops random off the goblins in BWL as well. So, what's needed to make a bar of elementium?
1x Elementium Ore - Drops from Goblins in BWL
3x Elemental Flux - Purchase from Smithing Vendors
1x Fiery Core - Drop from MC
10x Arcanite Bar: Multiply that by 10 for the total amount of bars needed and you're looking at a significant expense.
Quest: Rise, Thunderfury!
Who: Item: Dormant Wind Kissed Blade
Starts in: Silithus
Attain: 60
Level: 63
After gathering all the items needed, return to the Highlord Demetrian in Silithus and summon Thunderaan. Rather than gain his blessing, he's evidently rather angry after his imprisonment, and you must defeat him.
Honestly I can't say how hard of a fight Thunderaan is. Even with our best efforts to keep the summoning of Thunderaan a secret, half the server showed up for the event, and Thunderaan died quite quickly as a result. After defeating him, you loot the Dormant Wind Kissed Blade and have the now groveling Demitrian give you Thunderfury, Blessed Sword of the Windseeker.

At level 70 my warrior is unable to find a better DPS one handed weapon because of the proc on this. The proc is what makes this weapon.. While I can equip other weapons that I can hit harder with and have bigger crits with etc.. This in the main hand is far superior when aoe'ing mobs with wirlwind/cleave.. The proc hits 5 mobs that are surronding me, so between that and wirlwind/cleave, I can out DPS any geared warrior in my guild.

In the the latest patch (2.0.10.6448) the threat generated from the Thuderfury proc was reduced. Still good for tanking but the effect of ThunderClap has been increased and is usable in defensive stance, thus making it less neccessary for a lvl 70 tank to use/want this item.

I was testing and comparing tanking weapons in the last days a lot because I really wanted to know how much impact the newest changes on my loved legendary sword have. I don't want to talk about tanking (multiple) trash mobs in Karazhan ore elsewhere it's just not worth it.
Thunderfury is still the most powerful high-end encounter tanking weapon out there after 2.0.10. It is not only the (nerfed) average threat generation which is still a bit higher then
King's Defender
much more important is the substantial debuff which reduces the target's attack speed by 20% and makes this weapon so powerful versus melee damage intensive encounters (i.e. Gruul, Prince phase 2). The raid has has to deal with a remarkable lower amount of damage on the tank and consequently there is less healing needed.
This debuff is the reason why warriors of the top guilds like Nihilum or DnT still use this weapon...provided that they got it.

No, the TF affect and Thunder Clap don't stack.
Comment by

I am offhanding TF on my combat rogue and while yes the 1.9 speed does lower the chance for combat potency procs, the large amount of unmitigated damage from the TF proc makes up for this. This makes TF an excellent offhand choice for rogues in TBC.
Since the debuff does not stack with thunderclap, and TC is the same 20% slow as TF, it isn't as vital in PVE as it once was. However, a rogue with it being there alleviates the tank from having to spend rage on keeping TC up.
In addition, the -15NR debuff helps with poison (less resists) and increases the damage from nature based casters (shaman/druid).
In pvp it is still awesome, the 20% atk speed slow affects enemy players as well and decreases the damage taken from all physical damage dealers. This essentially means the proc turns a warrior's 3.0 speed 2hander into a 3.6 (ouch). It is too bad it doesn't increase spell cast time as well, but that's what mind numbing poison is for :-P
As a rogue, I've found that TF is most versitile, useful, and just plain coolest weapon a rogue could have. It's sad that because of TF's overpowered tanking factor that most of them went to warriors.
Since the addition of new, high dps tanking weapons, the threat nerf to TF, and the change to thunderclap(usable in defensive stance now), chances are you will see less and less warriors using this weapon.
It is still a very good rogue weapon though...

Chances are you'll see less and less Warriors wielding TF because *no one runs the instances that you have to farm to acquire one*. Seriously, who the hell is going to re-farm MC and BWL for a TF these days? I'd laugh if one of my Rogues suggested we farm one or two of these up. Hard.
My interest in TF is only renewed by a supposed questline to upgrade it; I firmly believe this is total bull, but the possibility is still mildly tantalizing. I still doubt it'll be worth farming one up.
Comment by
23311
How do guilds working on new content have "a couple of hours" to farm two legendary drops that have exceptionally low drop rates?
If the drop %s were higher, if the instances were on a one day timer, that I could see. But if you're serious about progressing, farming MC and BWL for the items required seems a massive waste of time when you could be progressing just fine without the legendary item yielded by doing so.

Try and silence me. The operative phrase is STILL lucky.
No weapon generates more threat for a Prot Warrior, but getting it still proves to be a pain in the ass even at level 70. The time invested may or may not be worth it; it's up to how dedicated you and yours are to getting one of these bad boys made.
Comment by

Keep in mind that even Nihilum; arguably tops in the World for progression raiding; is still using TFs. Two of their BT raiders have them.
That alone tells me that working for this weapon is still worth it, since nothing yet up to BT has dropped that is arguably equivalent or better.

/signed and agree.
Im still using it as offhand and loving it :)
Going to wield the Gladiator's Slicer mainhand and the TF offhand with dual mongoose enchants, and with all the haste attacks the procs from both TF and mongoose does really sick damage.
And as a note to the warrior/rogue debate, some guilds have more luck then others we created our MT`s and my thunderfury in less then 6 months or so.
He got his first ofc and since i collected mats and helped out creating the 1st sword i got the chance to get the 2nd (if the bindings would drop again)
So for me as a rogue i couldn`t be more happy to wield it still in TBC and the debuff is pretty good for the whole raid especially since our MT went fury and now almost stopped raiding we still have one in guild on raids.
For me to actually get the bindings to drop and to be able to create the sword after collecting the mats (insane work pre TBC) beats the feeling of downing any of the raid bosses :)
Anyone that ever created the sword deserve it and will love it for a long time to come.

Thunderfury was the holy grail for tanks Pre-BC, but not anymore. Very few of the top guild's tanks are using it anymore, as weapons from Black Temple are by far much better.
King's Defender
and
The Sun Eater
are pretty much on par with TF, if not a little better just due to the stats. They probably won't however generate as much threat.
Top guilds in Black Temple are now using
The Brutalizer
and the
Mallet of the Tides
on their tanks over Thunderfury. Why? Threat generation is about the same, if not more due to the weapon skill addition. These weapons also have added defense and more stamina that Thunderfury with its meager stats cannot offer.
I still use Thunderfury on my rogue because, well I worked for it. It makes my character unique, and I like that. The fact that it still does good DPS is just icing on the cake. Should a tank still use it if he has access to better weapons? Probably not. My loss of 9 DPS by using the sword over a better offhand cannot even compare to the importance of a tank holding aggro and having enough defense and stamina to stay alive.

Alright, WoWHeaders, I have a question.
A paladin I know is quite interested in going back to farm the Thunderfury. Is this actually worth the time invested, since we're on, what, 2.1.0 now?
I can't help but be skeptical.

The speed of the weapon and the low dps makes it a poor choice for any raiding Combat Rogue. It's way too slow for the off hand (and shouldn't be used in off anyway due to the proc) and the 60-145 damage range is extremely low for a Lv 70 main hand weapon (Merciless Gladiator has 203-305, in comparison). Such a discrepancy cannot be compensated with the proc.
And yes, some tanks still use it, primarily because of the debuff, but Imp. Thunderclap is just as good and most epic tanking weapons have 1.6 speed, allowing a faster Heroic Strike cycle.

According to the Brothers Tauren there are hidden effects:
35% chance on hit his puppy will fall down a well and his favorite great aunt will be eaten by a grizzly bear.
Also, all opponents stats will be reduced by 100% until next server restart(insta-nerfed)
Opponent will walk the rest of the day in a mild depression having been emasculated in front of it's peers.
Opponent may also be renamed by guild mates as Nancy, Susie, or Sissy Boy, in the event opponent is female, her name will be Brad.
IT'S AWESOME!

Sometimes math&theorycrafting can cloud some important truths. Such is the fate of Thunderfury.
It is a true and perfectly valid argument that TF lacks stats when compared to even King's Defender.
But lets be realistic, how much mitigation your MT will want before he starts to see threat is the main concern of tanking. Until he gets his gear, yeah new epics will offer more protection. But at some point into TBC raid contect, you will see you tanks will have enough mitigation through armor & jewellary and they will start being worried about threat because your raid DPS will be going up continously while your tanks will be working on survival.
When you reach that point, you will wish your MT had TF over any other weapon out there.
I am GM of a guild and we are on Vashj & Kael now. I honestly wish at least one of our tanks (we do not have an appointed MT) had TF instead of the mallet of tides that they all have :)
I am very seriously considering spending time to go to MC & BWL to craft TF for our tanks.
Imo the slow debuff and massive threat generation makes this weapon very superior over any other existing alternatives.

Nowadays, weapon DPS is one of the least important ways to maintain threat. At SSC/TK level, tank weapons should not be chosen for their threat gen abilities--they should be used situationally based on their attributes. If you need hit/armor, use King's Defender. If you want pure mitigation/crushproofing, use Sun Eater. If you want stam or expertise, use Mallet of the Tides, etc. It's a fact that a tank's ability to generate threat WILL increase along with raid DPS as you progress. Why? Because of Block Value.
By the time you reach SSC and TK, tanks should be getting massive amounts of block value on their gear, making Shield Slam the primary threat generator. With a block value of 881, I regularly hit 1100-1200 threat per second on SSC and TK mobs. When you're maintaining that, no one's gonna pull aggro.
Add in revenge and the combined devastate and sunder, and the DPS in weapon differences aren't going to matter one bit. As for the slowing proc, imp thunderclap is superior to the TF proc, because it lasts longer and is not dependent on a random proc.
So don't waste your time farming for TF. Farm more T5 instead.

I had a question about this as far as lvl70+ mobs are concerned. Even though it says the debuff reduces their attack speed by 20%, does it scale that way? Or is it more-like 10% or less?
I ask this because I'm going to be DPSing with my guild now, and wanted to know if on boss fights it'd be worth off-handing Thunderfury to reduce a boss' physical attack DPS, but if it's less than Thunderclap, I don't see much of a reason to lose that extra damage I could get by off-handing my gladiator sword.

Ok, this may seem like a dumb question, but I wanted to get it clarified here. Let me preface this by saying that I would assume that the lightning attack that TF generates would jump to targets within a certain radius of the main target and if any of those radial targets are cc'd in any way, that the attack would break the CC. However, I've had several people swear that their CC was not broken when the Tank was using Thunderfury and lightning was bouncing all over the place. So does this thing break CC's or not??
Thanks!
EDIT: Nevermind! I got my question answered! It DOES NOT break CC's. :-)

the quest chain to get this weapon is started by a drop from 1 of 2 bosses in molten core, and you still need to get the drop from the other boss later, along with alot of (previously hard to get) materials.

After two years, I finally got mine tonight. I've been soloing Garr for about 2 1/2 months, and tonight the binding finally dropped. I used it tonight in BT, and had no issues at all with threat, maybe a minor drop, if any, I had my whole raid looking out and told them to tell me if there was any kind of significant difference in threat to tell me and I'd switch back to my normal weapon (Brutalizer) and nobody said a word all night.. so I think if you're a good tank, and have a good rotation, you'd still be fine using this sword. Granted you might want the extra stam for some fights, but as a whole, I didn't notice any problems at all. In my opinion, it's still worth getting especially if you've been trying for it for a long time.

There seems to be a lot of people wondering if Thunderfury is still obtainable. In my post I will clear up a few things.
1.) The bindings, which are needed to create this weapon, drop off Baron Geddon in Molten Core -
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=12056
and Garr in Molten Core respectively
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=12057
.
2.) Anyone can "loot" the bindings, but the only classes that can use it are
Warriors, Paladins, Hunters, and Rogues
. This is written on the bindings.
3.) In Patch
3.03
a bug occurred where Smelt Elementium could no longer be taught by Master Elemental Shaper Krixix. Krixix must be mind controlled by a Priest and can teach a miner of 300 skill or more "Smelt Elementium." However the bug persists and no one can learn it.
If you recieve a binding, your best bet is to petition a GM and ask if they can assist you in the situation. Some people have reported now that you can only learn Smelt Elementium if you have a piece of the binding, I do not know this for sure though.

It was important to be at full HP before you blew up or he could combo you from a crit bomb and fall damage. I got as low as 1k hp at one point but with seal of wisdom and divine plea I never went oom.
Neither of the bosses dropped my bindings though =/

I'm surprised to see that no one has mentioned yet that as it stands now - Elementium Bars are impossible to make.
Everyone who knew how to smelt it forgot how and the mob that teaches it in BWL is bugged and can no longer teach it.
So unless you had the bars already - there's no more Thunderfurys till this gets fixed.

Death Knights are able to obtain this weapon, but its not clear if it is working as intended.
They might have added the class to the weapon or might have forgotten to put a restriction on it for Death Knights.

If you check out:

You will see that he as a Death Knight have Thunderfury, what i'm interested in knowing is how on earth this is possible as the bindings isn't exactly Death Knight available? :(

im sry for my bad english skillz.
i have a hunch now i culd be completely rong about it tho but as far as i can tell NONE of the legendary items that people
use
to be able to get people cant now. Take Atiesh for example no 1 can get it since Nax moved to Northrend since WotLK.
Thr is also Ashbringer which can not be claimed bcuz it is now in the hands of the paladin Tirion Fordring (once again sry if i spelt that rong)
im starting to think that Blizzards so called "bug" is actually either A: a posible introduction to new legendary items or something of the sort, or B: Blizz just decided to cut out those legendary items all together.
correct me if im rong but i havn't found any legendary items besides that located in TK the Eye raid in the Kael'thas encounter or Atiesh encounter with Adonisis, reaper of souls. one thing is for certian Blizz is planing something im sure that they will reveal it soon enuf. so keep an eye out...

LOL! I already have the 10 bars. Just need the bindings. But if anyone can confirm this for me or prove that i am completely wasting my time, i would greatly appreciate it.

I've over the last 4 days bought the mats for the elementium bars via AH, heres a overlook of the prices atm:
The 10 elementium ore's only cost me about 775g buying them off AH.
Luckily i have a transmute master alch and got off all the 100 arcanite bars for around 220g worth of mats, (got aprox 20 arcanite bars free from the transmute proc).
I got the 30 elemental flux's i needed for 360g(12g a piece because of exalted rep).
The fiery core's cost me about 50g a piece.
so cost for 10xelementium bars is aprox:
10xElementium ore's: 775g
100xArcanite bars: 220g
30xElemental flux: 360g
10xFiery core's: 500g
Total: 1855,-
I dont think it can be bought much cheaper than this, i have been lucky on some of the mats. but you should probably expect to pay 1600-2200g on the AH for these mats.

Its pretty funny actually.. I decided to whip out my TF from my bank and tank 25man naxx with it the other day... It's still a beast of a tanking weapon, was able to tank with it just fine maintaining a few 100k+ threat over the rest of the raid on boss encounters...it may not have the stats like the new and better weapons available...but it still generates a good amount to still be able to tank with. lol
Comment by
300829
I certainly want to tank with this weapon simply because of the proc. It frees two talent points from my tree and boosts Boomkin and Shammy DPS by lowering nature resist. Sure Hammer of the Righteous is reliant on weapon DPS, but I'd say the points, bonus nature DPS and sheer E-Peen of this weapon make it worth it.

I really cant understand why they have removed the class restrictions on this item. It maybe was a bit pointless ever having hunter on there but i mean whats next why not add Death Knight tier one and two or even better remove the class restrictions on the Warglaives of Azzinoth i would be well game for farming for them. Female Troll hunter with 2 Warglavies would be the sex
Its in a way a sad end to such a fantasic weapon when you think of the time effort whole guilds put into running MC and BWL. I know it had to come with the level cap increasing etc etc but evertime i see or hear of a Death Knight or some clueless idiot running round with this makes me a little upset. Dont get me wrong if a binding dropped for me i would take and be very happy kinda serve to remind me of the epic times we had back in vanilla wow
To all that are farming this item Best of luck

__Edited from a random comment I placed elsewhere (New to wowheads system)--
Have blizzard increased the % on the bindings now?
All I seem to read is DK's commenting on "oh I went into MC and the bindings dropped, I've only been in there twice" or others stating "oh yay both bindings on one run". I've done a hell alot of MC's, pre bc on my hunter, bc on my paladin and now wrath on my warrior. All while doing more than 1 run per reset and I have yet to see them.
Thankfully last reset the eye off rag dropped, after a week or two more weeks of farming mountains he'll be the first BE paladin I see with Hand of Rag.
Hopefully the bindings drop this week on my warrior, I'll cry if I get them on my hunter :/

in classic this weapon was.... godlike. not cause of dps rate, but cause of efect.
even when tbc came out, it still was imba. you can tank whole ssc/tk mob group without problem.
in wrath you probabl will use it only cause you can show that you have it.
but even then - you need to do this quest line, that costs more than you can possibly afford. in wrath even prices for reagents needed to do this quest is still high.
and get someone to help you with old quest - only if you got some guild, that wana do some old events. once tried get help after AQ20 run.... failed.... aq40 - same. so maybe only way to get some help - pay :)
one rogue told me his tale: he joined guild, they went to mc - and.... boss dropped bindings. all who can need it, rolled, but rogue didnt get it. warrior, tank, got it. same was 2nd time and 3rd. so he joined 3 different guilds, and all they gave this rare drop to tanks. :D
and there is many ninjas. if this drops, and they can use it, they just loot ir and Rover . same was with
Ashes of Al`ar
. rogue, ninjad it in TK.looted it and disbanded raid. dropped from Kelt himself.
good luck to obtain this still awesome looking weapon.

Nearly three years after i got my first binding, i finally had the Garr binding drop on 2/28/09. It may have been the happiest day of my gaming life. Since i had the ore banked since the BWL days, i went ahead and smelted it and took a PUG 5 man to kill Thunderaan, and that was that.
The only complaint i have is that the fight with Thunderaan was a little anti-climactic, but i do remember even at level 60 it was not all that difficult.
After two days of Carrying this thing around Dalaran, i finally unequipped it, the sea of whispers asking how/where i got it were too much to bear. Regardless, i do love running around with it, it really is a beautiful sword.
Next up: Offhand warglaive. however, i don't think it will be possible to 3-man BT like it was MC at 80 ;-)
good luck to all you Binding-seekers, be persistent, IT WILL EVENTUALLY DROP.

Now that all I'm waiting on is my second binding I have been reading up quite a bit about this sword. Aside from its RP factor in town, it seems that skilled/geared warriors are able to whip it out for the "Lawl-Wrath" content. Seeing as Paladins threat generation is affected more by the weapons base DPS I'm wondering if any of my fellow tankadins have bothered giving this a try for even trash?
My 2nd and much more important question for every one who has the pleasure of equipping this weapon is: What enchant looks hands down coolest on it?

This weapon is really nice to tank with, still it is a lvl 60 Legendary weapon.
I havent seen any tanks with it latly, but it holds aggro really nice. me and a friend is trying to farm it. but the Baron is really hard to down without fire resistance gear. Garr is simple, a tank who can AoE hold aggro just do their stuff. and a other healer or a dps can just heal you when needed, i prefer a ret paladin, dics priest, enhancement shaman or just an healer. i really want this weapon, im a Death Knight tank from Emeriss - Horde - Scurge

Ive been running this place weekly.
i take a Frost mage(myself, most $%^& is immune to fire), DPS frost dk as the tank, Resto shammy,Survival hunter(his guild makes him raid as that spec), and sometimes a Marksman hunter when hes around.
takes less than 2 hours to clear it, we don't kill every mob but we don't go out of our way to try and avoid everything(unless a simple swim/leap works).
you encounter garr first, he does an ability that slows everybodys
movement
speed by 60%(only movement, not cast/swing). he also dispels everybody like mad. having a DK, mage, and 1-2 hunters....we aoe it all. as the many many adds garr has around him die they explode, so killing mobs around him may help out.
then you get baron geddon. hes fully fire immune. he puts a debuff on you similar to solarian from TK. the difference is that you must run from the person
with
the debuff as they can not move(like with thorim). they then blow up causing pretty strong aoe damage and taking their own fall damage. baron puts a magic debuff on you "ignite mana" it burns away you mana and inflicts damage(if you are 100% oom you take no damage, we have no dispell in our group so we wait it out after killing him"Ice block ftw") also baron does a hellfire ability that causes strong aoe damage to anything around him(in our case its only the dk).
GL on your bindings, theres already enough posts on what items are needed. i will just add that if you get any sulferon ingots that you make good use of them. takes 8 of them to make the legendary mace(+1 ingot to learn how to make the epic mace, but its boe so it can be crafted and traded)
edit: lastly, there are no class restrictions on the legendary items(not thunderfury or greatstaff of the guardian"which is not attainable anyway").
anybody can do this, even a shaman(who can not weild a sword) can get thunderfury. I, the mage, am doing these runs to get the thunderfury myself, i made this group with friends and they have no problem with the first set of bindings going to me.
the down side...i keep buying the mats for it even though i have neither binding.

Dk Killemall from Lethon, I got mine on August 16th 2009. Took me around 8 months to get it, what took me so long is the elementium ores. Most ppl have no idea what Bwl is and they think it can be done by a couple of lvl 65 or 70. I had a really hard time finding the ppl willing to raid bwl. For the bindings I was very lucky, I got my second binding one week after the first.Thunderaan is easly soloable by any deathknights, just use death strike to heal yourself.
For those thinking about getting it, it is totally worth it. I get whispers all the time about it and I even raid ulduar 25 with it and still do good dps. Plus the debuff it puts on the mobs is awesome, looks very nice.
good luck getting yours.

If you plan to get Thunderfury (probably for sentimental value or just because you want a legendary) - do so before the Cataclysm expansion, as Ragnaros is essential for the quest item (
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=19017
if you didn't read above) - Blizzard is reintroducing him, so we obviously won't be able to head into MC and kill him then.

Would the new epic Ulduar enchants be applicable to this? The enchant states level 75, but is that "min req" level or iLevel? TF is iLvl 80.
Comment by

Yes actually. The uldaur enchants are min lvl 60, but require the character to be 75 for them to become active, so technically you could.
And they'd better not remove F*&king Rag, EVER. I'm just 4 ingots away from my hammer and need that eye, and I'm got my sights on Thunderfury as well......yeah...gonna duel them on my fury warrior....JUST YOU WAIT!

Would I farm for it again? Prob not
Was it worth it? Yes
Have I found any uses for it at level 80? Yea it makes it easier to pickup the whelps on onyxia, it makes a lot of people break out in a jealous rage at you, and its fun to humilate people when you finish them off with it in arena

This weapon was originally intended to be the Ashbringer, and the weapon's model is called Ashbringer. This explains the bones and almost Scourge-esque appearance of the weapon. However, a different model was created for Ashbringer and Thunderfury instead became the first Legendary Weapon. This was most likely because the events and quests involving the Ashbringer hadn't been fully planned out at the time, but players were eager to see a legendary item in the game.

Sigh, coming back to WoW.
Watching you need archievement's for everything.
Im probably not the only old-wow-geezer who's been there and ran Molten Core for month's for this weapon.
Sweat and blood, in the end you recieved it and it was just as powerful as the myth's said, and you as me probably know how it was to first instantly kill your first Feral Druid who normally laughed at you with his 75% Physical Damage reduction or how everyone and everything wanted you in their raid's for the insane buff, actually it was mandatory to have a Thunderfury in most raid's.
Only to see it phase into nothingness, with it's fading i feel like i myself is fading away together with it, the next generation of WoW kid's is pushing all oldschool players away from what we once called our own game, now this game is alien to me, it's not WoW.
GIVE ME BACK MY "#¤%& THUNDERFURY, I WAS ONCE A GOD AND NOW IM NOTHING. Stupid kids.

This endeavor if someone still has one bracer is not far off for yourselves, there is still the rare (3%) chance you can get this item before Cat comes out so I must please tell you to try and try for the 20-30 minutes each week at this item. Okay. I created an account just to add my 2c.
After roughly 8-9 months of weekly farming I completed Thunderfury. I bought all the elementium ore off the AH for 300g each and spammed trade for someone that could smelt it. I got my first binding off Garr about a month in. I just got the one off Geddon last night. Solo'd MC for the essence.
I slapped mongoose on this bad boy and as an ICC geared prot paladin in heroics I can pull about 4-5k TPS on trash and 6-7k on bosses. TF procs CONSTANTLY. Every other second mobs are engulfed in tornadoes and zapped. It's really cool looking.
I was debating whether or not I was going to quit WoW and told myself I would if Geddon's binding didn't drop this week. Oddly enough.. it did! I had to equip a new pair of pants irl.
Hang in there if you're farming this! It's worth it.
*Edit* Just wanted to add that I've tanked VoA 25 with it now. Didn't have any threat problems. I love this thing! Uploaded a picture on here also.
Edit again... still able to tank random cata heroics on my warrior and paladin with it without *much* threat issue. (though alot of people see it right away and start to whine, "seriously... thunderfury?")

Aloha,
I've spent the last 3 years working on this quest. Finally, Sunday night, I got the last binding I needed.
I'll agree with what others have said: you just have to keep farming. My first binding dropped from Baron Geddon about a year and a half ago and since then it's been a 20-30 minute MC run ever since.
Things are much easier now in regards to the other mats. 100 bars of Arcanite aren't nearly as expensive or hard to come by as they were 3 years ago before BC came out. Elementium ore still represents a hurdle but a good group and some smart Auction House watching will serve you well.
Really it's the binding drop rate that will frustrate you more than anything. There are times you think you'll abandon the quest. You'll rant to friends, GM's and anyone who will listen. In then end it doesn't matter. It's about playing the odds and plugging away at the runs, week after week, until you get what you need.
Someone last night asked why I was using it as my offhand when there were better items available. My reply:
"Because I have it."
That's probably good enough for everyone reading this.
Good luck!

Here are some tips on the other materials:
Tips on
Elementium Ore
:
Blackwing Lair
This ore can only be found in
Blackwing Lair
. You will need at least two players to defeat the first boss,
Razorgore the Untamed
. This encounter cannot be soloed due to the mechanics of the fight where one player must
Mind Control
Razorgore and hatch all the eggs in the room. Another player must protect Razorgore and not allow him to die.
Be sure to pick up
Goblin's Guide to Elementium
which drops off of
Master Elemental Shaper Krixix
if you or anyone else in the raid is a
Miner
. You will need this plan to
Smelt Elementium
.
Auction Houses
Check out both faction's auction halls:
If you find a good deal on an opposite faction's auction hall: Have another player meet you at any neutral auction house, such as
Booty Bay
to trade them.
Tips on
Arcanite Bars
:
If you can't find any on the auction halls, you'll find yourself looking a good spot to farm
Arcane Crystals
, which are needed to
transmute
.
The best place I found is in
Dire Maul East
. After you kill
Alzzin the Wildshaper
, an exit cave will open. In that cave, there are a few nodes that may or may not contain
Arcane Crystals
. I found this to be quick because you can rush straight to him and the mining nodes are always there. Sometimes you'll get lucky and there will be a
Arcane Crystal
in each one... or none. It's random so keep the faith and grind away.

It is easy to get the bindings you need to be committed. I ran MC every week for over a year and I finally got the two bindings. Because each Binding is a 3.0% - 3.7% drop rate the only thing you can really do is hope for some luck. If you have the quest for the bindings (which you get in Silithius) the quest item of Rag has a 100% drop rate.
Once you get both bindings you will need to get the ten (10) Elementium Ore from BWL. BWL is not over hard, it can be 3 manned, but you will need to follow strats for the 1st and 2nd bosses. Ebonroc is the only other boss that you need to follow strat.
When your turn in all four items in Silithis, the world boss will spawn, but he only has just iver 300K hp. He will drop the raw sword, you hand it in and get Thuderfury. Good luck!

I thought getting the bars was the hardest part but after reading the above comments, i was extremely lucky.

Finished the quest for Thunderfury one week ago with my paladin and just received the feat of strength upon equipping the sword. I still am farming both Bindings on my mage though. A must have for any collector in the game.
I also am farming the materials for the Sulfuron Hammer on my mage, given I already have the Eye, and was concerned about getting the feat due to mages being unable to equip maces. Worried about this, I ticketed a GM and got the response they are working to fix this issue. I got this answer before the latest patch and I speculate classes that cannot equip the weapons will be granted the feat of strength upon receiving the item.

I believe it used to be that way but when the patch hit that lets you trade things around to members in the raid they changed it so as an example the Grand Black War Mammoth couldnt be passed around the raid so everyone could get the Feat of Strength.

Last week, I got my first binding off Geddon. This week, I got the other binding off Garr. Took 4 weeks to get both since I started going to MC. I got all the mats this week as well including the ores. I had to buy the last 4 ores from Alliance side since Horde side was low on supply and the one person that told me he had 4 ores wanted 1k each for them.
But I did get the sword. Put the tanking 1h rune on it for DKs and went to Wintergrasp to play with it. Had fun. Then went to Heroic Nexus to tank with it. I held agro pretty well. I just need alittle more hit to lower the number of times I missed. (I am at 7.75%).
Overall, I am glad I got it. Cost alot in mats for the ores, but well worth it. I can finally say I now have a very small place in WOW history as I have a Death Knight with a Thunderfury.

I've been at this for 34 weeks on 2 characters. I never intended to even try for this but on a random pug I won a binding on a lvl 60 alt pally off of Baron (oct 09).
I read a few forums and found this was easily soloable at 80. So I started to solo Garr each week on my pally, and both Garr and Baron on my main warrior. 7 or so weeks into it I got Garr's binding for my warrior.
Last week I scored Garr's binding on my pally and this week (just now) I got Baron's binding for my Warrior! Back to back weeks of creating thunderfury!
I was solo'ing Garr on my pally ret spec'd healing myself as art of war procs and solo'ing baron with 315 FR gear on my warrior in zerker stance using a blood thirst glyph.
Glad I got this all done before Cataclysm - rumored to be removing MC since rag was moving.

Quest Line
This item is the final reward of a challenging and very expensive quest line, which can be started by a hunter, paladin, rogue, or warrior.
This quote is from the small article at the top of this page explaining how to obtain Thunderfury. However, this information is outdated. It was changed so that
any
class can now complete this quest line and obtain Thunderfury, regardless of if they can use the weapon or not.
Though, you must be able to equip Thunderfury in order to obtain the achievement.

They're definitely not going to remove the quest to obtain Thunderfury as it has been confirmed that the new Guild Achievement "We Are Legendary" - requires the guild to craft all 6 pre-cataclysm legendary AFTER release.
So all the Shadowmourne wielders - your axe will NOT count toward that achievement unless you create the weapon AFTER release of Cataclysm!
Same goes for Thunderfury, if the Left Bindings can finally drop, I'm waiting for Cata to finish it and give my guild the achievement.

Have had one binding for a long long time.
Went to solo MC as usual this week...
Both bindings dropped.
And The Eye.
Already had Garr's binding and have Sulfuras. My brother was pissed. lol.
Has the drop % been increased, or was this just a one-in-a-million run?

Surprisingly i got both my bindings during that period as well.
Went into MC on a tuesday, got the binding from Baron, went again the next day after the reset, and Garr's dropped.
Very exciting =)
Did a few runs with guildies & their alts into BWL to grab all the ores & i managed to get it rather quickly that way.
I still easily pull 7-8k TPS as a prot warr in heroics with mostly 264 gear. It's an absolute blast, it made tanking heroics a lot more enjoyable, i actually enjoy doing HoR now. :p
Still works fine for tanking LK10 as well honestly, but i'd rather not bother considering the dps is lower, not greatly lowered, but still lower.
I do about 10-11k Revenge crits with this thing, whereas with my Marrowgar mace i pull about 12-14k revenge crits.

Guide to getting
Thunderfury
.
1. Aquire one Binding of the Windseeker (
Right half
and/or
the left half
) which drops from Garr and/or Baron Geddon respectively in the Molten Core raid. (You can just get both before you start the quest if you want)
2. Go with them to Highlord Demitrian in Silithus and talk to him, you will get a
vessel
(you have to select the chat options before you get it), which you right-click and then return to Highlord Demitrian.
3. After you've done that he will give you another quest to go and fetch some materials, these are 10
Enchanted Elementium Bars
, the other half of the bindings of the windseeker (
right
/
left
), and the
Essence of the Firelord
(which drops 100% from Ragnaros inside the Molten Core if you are on the quest.)
4. Return with all of the materials to Highlord Demitrian, in which turn he will summon Thundeeran on the plains behind you.
5. Kill Thundeeran, he will drop his sword as a quest item, which you then right-click on for a quest.
6. Turn this quest in to Highlord Demitrian to recieve
Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
.
Edit 2014/03/08: Never realized I would get this many upvotes, corrected several spelling errors now that I've gotten better at english, my grammar is still not 100% though. Got my Thunderfury on 2013/07/10! :-)

Garr dropped it on run number 2 and Geddon on run number 5. I farmed the thing for months on my warrior, but never got any binding.
I actually made this post to let other Rogues know that Thunderaan is easily soloable with Recuperate, did as Assassination without any glyphs (just logged after patch day, did a quick spec and ran there to finish the quest)

After patch 4.0.1 was release, everyone with Thunderfury should be happy to know that the 20% reduced attack speed works on EVERYTHING in northrend now. I know the -25 nature resistance would proc on mobs but the 20% reduced attack speed wouldn't, I've notice that every time it procs, the -20% attack speed procs too, making this weapon even that much better even at 80.

Slight Correction:
It's not that TF proc and ThunderClap stacks togheter for a +20*1,2 (or 20+20) attack speed effect.
It's still 20% only, just the tornado effect can't be cancelled so.. both stacks (but only +20% effective).

Just got the second binding and finished Thunderfury. Patch 4.0.3a (a.k.a. the shattering) was just released earlier this week and this may be one of the first Thunderfury's completed after the mainland world switched over to the cataclysm one. The NPC for the Thunderfury quest is still located in the northwest corner of Silithus and the quest remains unchanged and Thunderfury still obtainable for anyone who was still unsure.

I made a ticket about the nerf and was told if I didnt like it to make a suggestion on the forums to revert it to its original status. So, I made another ticket complaining about the 1st ticket and asking for a proper answer. Lo and Behold..
"The DPS on the weapon was decreased because the damage of the proc was increased. You should still experience close to previous performance with the blade as the proc is triggered quite often."
So I tested it on the lvl 80 dummy (I'm 80 ret pala) and from 200 melee swings, it proc'd 39 times. Not conclusive but I couldnt be bothered to sit there for 1000 swings.
Looks like TF has a 20% proc rate now.
The proc hit for 330-331 and crit for 496-7
The proc crit rate matched my own crit rating exactly

I play with a friend i met online about a year ago. We only know each other through wow; i'm 24, he's 13. I tought him the basics of wow and we just kept playing together, i helped him get into raids and stuff. He doesn't do the best dps out there but he enjoys raiding and sadly people don't invite him much; so i organize pugs to get him a spot. About 6 months ago, i offered a chopper to him for his birthday. He was so happy, he wanted to give me a gift for my birthday too. Sadly, i have pretty much everything, i got a good guild into hard modes, and a few gold capped characters.
Jokingly, i told him that getting my second binding (geddon)for my birthday would be really awesome.
Obviously he didn't really know what it was, so he said ''omg i'll get it for you for your birthday ''
I chuckled a little bit and said it's fine you don't have to :P
Time went by, i ended up transfering server, he couldn't get money to transfer to he decided to start a paladin on my server. He slowly leveled, i ran him a few instances, but surely he was getting closer to 80. At the same time, my birthday was getting closer and closer. (Meanwhile, i had been soloing molten core for about 18 months, with no luck with the binding.)
Eventually, he hit 80, he was so happy. We ran a few randoms to gear him, did toc a few times, etc.
The next tuesday, 2 days before my birthday, i decided to bring him to MC with me. he was really excited because i had been talking to him about it and he wanted to see those big bosses. We cleared some trash, killed a few bosses, and finally ended up pulling geddon. He died swiftly, but my friend died to living bomb. when the boss died he said ''dont loot rez me first i wanna loot for you''.
i went along with it, i rezzed him, as soon as he got up, he kneeled down to loot the boss.
There it was, the binding i had been looking for for so long. After 2 years of farming, it was there, on the loot table. i couldn't believe it.
My friend, completely unaware what that meant and how much luck was involved simply said "you see? i told you i'd get you your second binding for your birthday ."
I was speechless. he promptly passed on the binding, so i could loot it to complete thunderfury.
When i think back about it, i can't help but wonder how it happened, and how happy he made me, just as i did when i offered him his motorcycle.
So there you have it, the story of the little guy who called a binding drop 6 months in advance.
Edit: Fast forward 2 years and 8 months, I still play the game, and i grew closer to my friend this story is about. Unfortunately, he drowned in his pool last weekend. Since this little story grew so popular on Wowhead I'd like to use this opportunity to tell you guys how awesome he was, and how much fun I had playing this game with him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, and anyone who ever had the chance to know how kind and joyful he was. I'm gonna miss you Matt.
Edit #2: Hi there; it's me again. (I'm writing this sobbing like a girl.) I just wanted to mention that this story was brought up on the wow subreddit forum and I was in tears reading the comments and seeing how much support there is out there. I can't thank you guys enough. I got a few messages asking who I was and if I still played. I do indeed; When this story happened, I was a paladin named Nessaja, on Proudmoore US. Ever since then I went by the names Snauzberries, and Rivendare, on Zul'Jin (horde). My characters are now Pineapples, Turbocat, and Healthbar (still on zul'jin). If you'd like to say hi, drop me a message! :)

Not to anger anyone out there who's spent months on this but, I got my right binding on the first run, and my left binding on my 3rd run.
I had never really expected to get the bindings both so easily, so I had no other mats prepared. I promptly spent 5k gold in the AH and completed the quest.

Last tuesday I went into MC as usual, running through the bosses as usual... But then it happened. I got my second binding from Garr! I went into a state of satisfaction of wich i've never felt before.
I pressed on, looking in my bags through the entire time. Then... As I killed Ragnaros... Yeah, you geussed it right, the Eye dropped too! I bow down to the WoW-gods, and thank them.
Anyway, what I wanted to say was that, for the guild achievement, you don't need to wear the item, but for the Feat of Strength you need to be able to equip it.
http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/haomarush/a%C3%AD/simple
- click on recent activity and you'll see I got both legendarys withing the time of a few hours. (sadly it wont say when I looted the binding and the eye)
Conclusion, if you're after the Guild Achievement, ANYONE in the guild can get it, if you're after the Feat of Strength, only those who CAN EQUIP the item can get it.

My adventure with Thunderfury. Oh how dangerously annoying it was. It started off as a joke, when Death Knights first came out. "Hey, I'm going to twink out my Death Knight. Hah. I might even get Thunderfury," my friend said. I thought it was funny, but suddenly I began to think. I looked up the materials, having started at the same time BC had began, I had no idea what the hell they were. Whatever, you know. I'll try to collect them. My friend, however, had not been kidding. He told me what needed to be done, and told me I could have Thunderfury after him. I didn't care, I figured it'd be easy. 1 year later, my friend quits, and takes his Elementium with him. I was sad.
I run Molten Core, trying to finish off Sulfuras, seeing as how I had half the materials alone from trying to farm Thunderfury. With 5 Elementium Bars in my bag, I thought the day would never happen. It dropped. Binding of the Windseeker from Garr. I tactfully pee'd myself, slung that over my shoulder and picked up the quest. From then on.. Game on. 5000 gold and one situation when I was hacked later, I had me all of my elementium. And I was happy.
It was another year of sporadically trying to kill Baron Geddon with a friend when finally I gave up. I gave up for a month or two. Afterall, rumors in Cata said that Molten Core was going away anyway. When I discovered I was wrong, it was about to go down. I tried again. Level 83 DK, trying to solo Baron Geddon. Yeah, that didn't go well. Gave it a try at 85, with my friend. No go. But then something amazing happened.
For two years I had been trying to solo Baron Geddon, but now it was possible. I knew it was. Had my friend not been there I would have the most epic battle with Baron Geddon and the most worth it kill ever. Well, I was alone. It was me, and Geddon. I death gripped the fool, and fought him for a few minutes, before he finally preformed his last service for Ragnaros. I told my friends that this was it, and looted. There before me was the apple of my eye for 2 straight years.
After such, I ran down to Silithus with two friends and killed Thunderaan like a champ, taking Thunderfury for my own.

Upon receiving this weapon you will receive the guild achievement
Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker - Guild Edition
. However to achieve
Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
the player must wield the weapon. This means classes that can't wield swords can still get their guild the achievement, but can not get themselves the feat of strength.

Has someone thought about what actual Cataclysm enchants should be used in TF? I still like to use it in big pulls (amusing when people freaks out at me for using a 60 level sword whithout really caring if I maintain the threat (yes) or not), but since Mongoose has losed some kick, I'm thinking about changing to another tanking enchant, but preferably one whose graphics blend nice with the weapon.
Any suggestion? Even if you don't like the idea that someone is actually still using it, please let's just maintain this on the fashion sense.

One of the recent updates (4.0.3) broke one of the shaders on this, it's now a dull grey instead of the bright silver it used to be. I recommend people who care about this put in a bug report.
It also broke the shaders on the sphere below A'Dal, but not as many people care about that

I pair my Thunderfury with
Ravencrest's Legacy
in my vanity set, though since it is no longer available, you will have to settle for
Maladath, Runed Blade of the Black Flight
:)
(And no weapon enchant makes these look better than Mongoose)

Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker is the legendary sword once wielded by Thunderaan, Prince of Air.
For a mili sec I thought it said
Prince of Bel'Air.
Its a bit off topic but lol'd once I realized how slacky that was. Didn't even react at first.
(Was reading this to a friend who was curious where you got it and lore around it)

After over 4 years from getting the binding from Geddon, I finally received the Binding from Garr yesterday. I tried tanking Heroics with it at level 85 and had difficulty, then I stacked a ton of expertise and the next heroic I did I held aggro fairly easily AOE tanking, rarely dropping aggro but for a split second here or there if someone hit a mob before I got to it or burst dps'ed a mob other than skull.
After so much time and effort trying to get this weapon, I'm not going to let it sit in the bank. I also put Accuracy on the weapon. It was worth it, but I would never do it again the frustration of not seeing the binding week after week wasn't fun, I kind of can barely believe I actually have the weapon now because it took so long.
I also plan on DPSing with it in my offhand, yeah screw it, I don't care what anyone thinks, I play this game for my enjoyment, and I'm only talking 5 mans/Heroics here, unless I come across bad threat issues. Of course I won't raid with it though, (but I'll admit I would if they would let me). I love the proc, it procs constantly. Seems to almost always proc after I rush in, Rend, Thunderclap then Shockwave, sometimes twice. Seeing all the mobs you just cleaved get enveloped in a tornado is pretty cool :)
Note: After getting some better gear and raising attack power, absolutely no issues tanking with it as a Warrior at 85

If you have this weapon for looks why would you enchant it? There needs to be a way to un enchant a weapon. As far as I know there isn't. For some reason I want to see what it would look like with power torrent enchanted on it.

Also, if you're worried about the proc's effect, imp t-clap has the exact same effect. If your tanks don't have this, they should consider going back to tanking school.
This reply makes no sense, as even when it was done in 2.4 warriors already were no longer the only tanking choice and other classes could be seen around, matter of fact in my guild we were 2 tankadins running the show and, as you might be aware, paladins don't have thunder clap to begin with.
EDIT: downvote this comment as much as you like, doesn't change the fact that not everyone was running with Warrior tanks in TBC.

NOT
be transmoged. So they are just shiny items meant to take up a bank slot and collect more dust.

What Blizzard said is that legendaries (and other items) are not going to be able to be used for transmog
for now
. They said that they wanted to initially have transmog on a reduced set of items, and then later they will see if to open it up to more items. So keep on farming!

Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
and my
Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
i noticed that i got the guild Achievment before the actual feat of strength achievment (which i got when i equipped them)
I think it's very important to know that if noone in the raid can use the glaives or any other legendary simply raidroll them because the guild the character is in will earn the guild achievment for the legendary weapon if the character is at the required reputation level with the guild.

I decided to farm some rare classic schemes in June'11 and got Gedon's binding during 2nd run. I really did not intend to farm for TF. But after that I decided to do it and constantly visited MC since June. Perhaps, I missed 3 or 4 lockouts. Yesterday I got Garr's part. So, it took 7 months of farming (30+ runs). I consider myself quite lucky.
I would like ask a question. I’m a hunter and as far as I know, Blizz will remove slot for melee weapon in MoP. Does that mean that hunter could not equip this weapon? ‘Cos I heard, that hunters will be able to put melee weapon to slot for range weapon. Is it true or we will be able to carry this weapon only till MoP release?

For the quest you require both of the bindings which have a very low drop rate, around 4%.
The 10
Enchanted Elementium Bar
are made by any miner with
Goblin's Guide to Elementium
from Blackwing Lair.
Per bar you need 1
Elementium Ingot
, 10
Arcanite Bar
, 1
Fiery Core
and 3
Elemental Flux
.
Each
Arcanite Bar
requires 1
Thorium Bar
and 1
Arcane Crystal
.
In total, for the quest you need:
- 10
Elementium Ingots
- Blackwing Lair
- 100
Thorium Bars
- The ore is farmed faster in
Silithus
Winterspring.
- 100
Arcane Crystals
- Thorium Veins (cannot be prospected from thorium ore)
- 10
Fiery Cores
- Molten Core
- 30
Elemental Flux
- Vendor

Just got this Tuesday. Was farming mats for Sulfuras when Garr dropped Right Binding. Spent months soloing Baron Geddon (getting Sulfuras in the meantime), when, 2 days ago, Left Binding dropped. I went totally calm, looting all the vendor trash. Clicked on Left Binding. Freaked out, yelling at Guild "GUYS! GUYS! DID YOU HEAR! CHECK THIS OUT! <LINK>!" Spammed friends with it, then ported to Org. I yelled at trade to be at the quest giver to see me get Thunderfury. 2 people actually showed up. I looted the Wind Kissed Blade then took a screenshot of my holding Sulfuras with the giant Thunderfury (Thunderaan's corpse) behind me. Might post that later.
It was the best thing ever!

Finally got mine after a long wait! Ran MC for months on my orc DK, never saw either of the bindings, but did see two eyes drop off rag and made a Sulfuras. Then I switched servers for a while and ran MC on my Draenei DK, this time seeing no legendary items of any kind drop. Then returned to my orc DK and ran MC for a few more months with nothing. Finally, this past Sunday, the wow gods smiled upon me and both bindings dropped in the same run! Promptly made my sword four days later, and took my honored place in trade chat! Hooray!
Persistence pays off with this one. Also with BWL being run all the time now for transmog, all the other items save the bindings are now MUCH easier to get than they were prior to patch 4.3! Bought four ingots off the AH for under 50G each.

Some numbers:
As a level 60 prot paladin using this to solo Strath (damn baron...), TF proc'd 495 times over 3944 seconds of combat, an average of 7.53 procs per minute.
Its total damage came out to 160833, which over the same 3944 seconds of combat added an average of 40.77 dps.
Typically what you can see from this weapon proc is that it will double the weapon dps, effectively making it over 80 dps. However, you will often experience many procs within a single pull, e.g. i've seen 10 procs in a 19 second pull, so the weapon proc alone was effectively worth 157.9 dps. Obviously this is only one instance of the weapon's use, so it may be better or worse for X class.

Yesterday I was messing around in MC, finishing off my warrior's t1 xmog set, when Garr dropped the first half. I was like "oh.....ok, that's nice." I get to Baron and the OTHER half drops. I was like "ok holy ^&*!" and ran to Silithus to the TF chain quest guy. Long story short, in less than 24 hours I went from no thoughts of ever having a TF in my head to having one. After almost 8 years, Blizzard finally stopped #$%^ting on my account (kind of).

Here's a reply that's soon to be downgraded into oblivion then hidden.
I had no real desire to get this thing or farm it for months or years like many people did. I just wanted my warlock T1 set. So first MC run, 2 warlock pieces, left half. Next run, 1 warlock piece. Third run, 1 warlock piece, right half and of course since I never expected to see the 2nd half went and got the quest for the essence of Firelord.
So, I don't have my complete T1 yet but... I have a legendary that I was never trying to get. Isn't RNG fail sometimes? Now will someone tell the RNG gods to drop my Felheart gloves? I'm tired of all these legendaries dropping already and really just want to finish my set.

Back in Vanilla when I started playing my rogue, I drooled after this mighty sword and started my hunt for it.
To cut the story short, after 5-6 years and countless MC runs later I finally had both of the bindings (had farmed the other mats back in TBC) and mere minutes later, I had the sword of my distant dreams (19/09/2011 never forget). I still equip it on my rogues off hand when I do BG:s for fun. The funny part is that just yesterday (6th of september 2012) I got the last part of my T2 set, the pants from Ragnaros which I also had been farming for years.
The Gods of RNG do not like me.

I ran Molten Core once a week for a month and a half and this week I got the right half after I had the left half drop the previous week, basically I had both bindings within a month and a half... Before getting the bindings I got the smelt Enchanted Elementium from BWL so I gathered mats to lvl my smelting to 300 which cost me probably 1k I bought 3 bars for 1.5k each and crafted the rest totaling to 8500g spent... this Tuesday after I run MC again and get Rags heart I will go get my Thunderfury

It seems like, as of now, the attack speed slow will no longer proc on targets level 80 or higher. The cutoff could be lower, as I was testing with target dummies in Stormwind and they're obviously in level cap increments (60, 70, 80, 85, etc). This may be old news, but I had failed to find this information anywhere as no one really uses it anymore and thought it would be worth sharing.
However, the 25 nature resist reduction does still proc and will cause the TF debuff animations to occur, so continue to envelop those gigantic bosses in tornadoes!

To be honest I feel kind of terrible. I have ran MC a total of 5 times and got both bindings. Its a shame because I know how hard a grind can be and how some have been trying to get the left or right bindings for months. My advice, the drops are just crazy random, they can both drop in a month or in a year, just hang in there and they will drop maybe not today, maybe not next week, but they will drop.

Thinking about farming this, but I have a feeling Blizzard is going to update it, just as we saw with Zin'rokh and Sulfuras.
It's a very nostalgic piece, but I'm not sure if it's worth all of your time. Some people run Molten Core here and there and manage to loot the mats, some people run it for years and don't see either binding. My recommendation is this: if you're max level and you're pretty much just doing dailies and waiting for new content because you're already top notch, go for it. If you're either still leveling or just capped, don't worry about it yet.
I feel that a lot of people have gone from wasting their lives on grinding to wasting their lives on farming. Don't do either! Do an instance run every day or two, don't devote your life to it, because you could end up missing out on modern content!

After much math i have found out exactly what BASE materials are required to get your thunderfury. (This instructable assumes you are a miner of at least skill lvl 300)
1. you will need to buy 30 elemental flux's from vendors
2. you will need 10 fiery cores from various mobs in MC
3. you will need to get the pattern from the boss by the technicians in BWL so you can smelt the elementium ( technicians will be mentioned later on)
Now for the more time consuming parts.
1. you must kill Garr in molten core
approximately
25 times. this will get you one of the bindings of the windseeker to start the whole chain.
2. you must kill Baron Geddon
approximately
33 times. this will get you the other bindings of the windseeker
3. You will need to mine just about 1000 thorium veins (big or small, ooze covered or not) to get 100 arcane crystals and enough ores for 100 thorium bars.
4.Kill about 140 of the technicians in BWL to get 10 of the ingots.
Note: i know drop rates don't stack, it's an approximation, dont get all butthurt over it.
Back to quicker steps, but these ones should be done last
1. Smelt all of your thorium ore into 100 thorium bars. easy peasy.
2. Xmute all of your thorium bars and arcane crystals into arcanite bars.
3. use the pattern you got from the boss by the technicians, as previously mentioned, to smelt ALL of your Arcanite bars with the cores, ingots, and flux's you bought/got previously into 10 enchanted elementium bars.
4. Finally, you must kill Ragnaros in the molten core to receive the FINAL piece to your quest. Yes, you can do this earlier, but that's just one more cramped inventory spot.
5. Go turn in your quest and have the guy summon thunderaan, he should be soloable as a lvl 80+. once you kill him, pick up the blade, and Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker will be in your hands, enjoy it.
Note: Sulfuras has many steps that are done in the same areas or nearby to these, so if your toon has 2H mace proficiency i'd suggest following my other guide as well on the Sulfuras page
If this tutorial has any mistakes please mention it so that the WoW community may still use it to their advantage. Otherwise, enjoy your Thunderfury :)

I originally got the left binding on a rogue I had and for 5 months the right one never dropped. I had 2 accounts, and started playing my warrior more in wrath. Just last week on 11/23, had the left binding drop on him, and on reset day 11/26, the right binding dropped. BEEN AFTER THE DANG THING FOR SO LONG and the wow gods finally cut me a break. Don't give up, such a great feel to play using this weapon! Still holds threat perfectly fine in MoP heroics and break this bad boy out for spell reflect in bgs :P

When I made that sword in the same week I also got the legendary Thoridal Bow from The Sunwell and also finished my legendary dagger quest. I got 3 legendaries within a 7 day period. Requirements(Guide/Steps) to make the
Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
So first you go to the Molten core until you get both bindings (or one doesn't matter)
Bindings of the Windseeker
(The Left Half) - 4.23% drop chance, dropped from
Baron Geddon
in the
Molten Core
Bindings of the Windseeker
(The Right Half) - 4.45% drop chance, dropped from
Garr
in the
Molten Core
Then you go to Silithus and talk to
Highlord Demitrian
in the Crystal Vale (the top left corner of Silithus) and you pick up
Examine the Vessel
(Complete it) then you pick up
Thunderaan the Windseeker
(Go back to the
Molten Core
and kill the remaining bosses (when you kill ragnaros you will get the
Essence of the Firelord
, its 100% drop chance)
Then all that is left is the
Enchanted Elementium Bar
(x10) ( Recipe to make
Enchanted Elementium Bar
drops from
Master Elemental Shaper Krixix
also)
To make the
Enchanted Elementium Bar
you need the following:
Elementium Ingot
(x10) - Dropped from
Blackwing Technician
's(8% drop chance) and from
Master Elemental Shaper Krixix
(5% drop chance) (This is from the level 60 raid
Blackwing Lair
in the Black Rock Mountain, Searing Gorge)
Arcanite Bar
(x100) - Made by alchemists which requires
Thorium Bar
(x1) and
Arcane Crystal
(x1)(mined mostly from thorium(from
Un'Goro Crater
)(You can take the chance of only collecting around 80
Thorium Bar
's and 80
Arcane Crystal
's since when a alchemist transmutes them there is the chance of them "proc'ing" and giving you 2 or more.)
Fiery Core
(x10) - Fiery Core's are basically dropped from any fire elementals in the molten core
Elemental Flux
(x30) - Can be bought from mostly any NPC that has to do with blacksmithing and that will vendor items to you.
I forgot to mention that none of the items needed to make the bars are soul-bound so you could just get them all off of an Auction House if you have enough gold and they are there (Then get the Fluxes from a Blacksmith vendor) and then just find a Miner with the recipe to make your bars for you.
For those who do not know this, to enter the Molten Core you go to the Black Rock Mountain in the Searing gorge, there inside the Black Rock Mountain Dungeon (Around level 55) you find the entrance to the Molten core, but to make the trip to the Molten Core quicker there is a quest outside from
Lothos Riftwaker
called
Attunement to the Core
which allows you teleport by speaking to him whenever you want to the Molten Core entrance (much faster then walking everytime on your Bindings grind). The quest is just to walk to the entrance of the Molten Core and loot a shard near the entrance then return it to him after you do so you can speak to him to teleport to the Molten Core thereforth.

Once you obtain this the biggest question is what enchants to use. Mongoose, crusader, deathfrost etc. I found for me the best enchant to use is Living Steel Weapon chain. +200 expertise and reduce disarm effect. I'm like a kid with a new toy been using it in raid finder as off hand(fury war) and tanking as well. It adds a purple glow around the central blue looks amazing, as well as higher dps/threat gen at lvl 90 then any other enchant that your able to put on it. Id equip it quickly as i'm sure blizz will catch on and nerf.

I'm probably not the first one who says this, but this is the one of the best looking swords blizzard added to the game, ever. There issome nice lookin' stuff besides this one, like the
Warglaive's of Azzinoth
(doesn't matter if main or off hand atm) and some others, ofcourse regardless to the rareness and stat's of the weapon(s). We are talking here about only the look of the weapon, not its obtainability or some other facts. Enchating this one with
mongoose
would give it and ultimate look regarding the fact that
Thunderfury
already has a thundery/lightning look which the enchant would only enhance further and making it deserve its name even more :) The bonus of the sword, back in the days ofcourse was fantastic and the stats of the weapon make it a nice tank or rogue weapon, but to get this, the way wasnt easy... Getting the bindings was only the beggining,if you were even that lucky on the droprate and your rolling, considering the fact that getting this was only possible with a 40 man raid. Got a bit easier with TBC and WOTLK, but it was still a pain in the ass,and people who have it know what im talking about. Sadly blizz decided to remove it with the launch of CATA, but i guess that's a reason more for old players to stand out in the masses of players in every city and raid :)) happy downrating

I decided to run MC for the pets so I went in and had a binding drop for my priest. I was a bit sad because I've run MC at least 50 times over the years on various other alts with no luck. Well I thought nothing of it and carried on to the other raids for the pets then decided I would do them all on my DK.
So I go in not thinking anything of the binding anymore when I'm shocked to see another binding drop.
So of course I think "aw I would've gotten Thunderfury if they were on the same toon!"
Well to my astonishment, about a minute later the other binding dropped!
The best part is it was the first time my DK ever stepped foot in MC.
I submitted a screenshot for proof.
Also here is a link to my armory for further proof.

I got lucky when I farmed mine, in that it dropped within about six months of running MC.. Unlucky, however, in that it dropped on my priest- apparently, you have to actually wield the weapon to get the personal achievement. We did, however, get the guild achievement for it, after submitting a GM ticket.

I just got this today, thought it would be fun to transmog it. Found out it is not moggable. I know the site says its not moggable, but I thought that the TF couldn't be mogged, but rather I was trying to make my Pandaria main hand look like the TF. BUT, I am still happy I have it.

My mage now awaits the ability to transmog to legendary items, if only because it would be comical to turn a 1-handed caster weapon owned by a female Blood Elf into the discombobulatingly massive Thunderfury.
Really, it seems off that you can't transmogrify to Legendary items: Aside from a few mounts like Mimiron's Head or the Ashes of Al'ar, Legendary items are the ultimate achievement in WoW: Even now, when it's quite possible to farm Molten Core solo, it still takes a great deal of dedication to obtain Thunderfury. If there's one item you want to show off that you have, it's a legendary.

Why in gods name Blizz din't make the legendaries to work like the heirloom items?, you know, growing in lvl.
i mean you can get those nifty looking and hard to get with time consuming quests and whatnots, but once the next expansion hits, they are overthrown by the first green item you get...
i mean its LEGENDARIES ITEMS, for *!@#s sacks...
It not so unreasonable...
If at least you could Transmog them, but no.

I finished my questline and got the Thunderfury on my Warlock. I wish that as a reward for dedicated players that we can transmog the Thunderfury and have it be a Bind on Account item.
Having it's ilvl match our lvl is also a nice idea. Just like the BoA items that increase as we level.
It was a fun experience farming the 2 bindings and finishing the quest line. It took me 3 years to finish. Getting a title with the achievement would also be nice something like "the Windseeker"

Currently level 90 paladin tanks can use this weapon without a huge loss to their TPS due to the fact that most of a paladin tanks abilities do not scale with % weapon damage. I can tank heroic SoO bosses with this an have no issues holding off of my dps.
The only issue you have tanking with a weapon like this is that your raid members may not always find it reassuring that you are wearing a level 60 weapon in a level 90 raid.
From what I can tell this weapon also procs seal of insight less than a level 90 weapon for some reason. I haven't figured it out yet. it's possible theres an internal cooldown on seal of insight that thunderfury beats with my haste being greater than 50%. I am going to try hitting the dummy with a different level 60 weapon and a level 80 weapon as well later and see if there is a difference because of level or attack speed.

Chrii:
I don't think that Legendaries should scale with level, but I think Legendaries should be given upgrade levels, like the current content epics have, but many more, perhaps with a Valor cost that scales itself, so upgrading your Legendary to current content would require a massive time commitment at first, and then you could work at maintaining them with future content. Blizzard doesn't want Legendaries to be "pick this up and never have to upgrade this slot again" items, but I think they should offer a way to allow players who want to keep the flavor of having a Legendary to do so without necessarily allowing them to do so without having to work toward it.
Having Legendaries flat out scale with level would allow 90s to faceroll old content to pick up BiS items, which would not be good. However, I think that letting 90s faceroll old content and then have to spend months doing new content to acquire the Valor to upgrade their shiny new Legendaries to current level would be a decent alternative. The time commitment would scale naturally too. If you do the questline to get
Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest
, which is no mean feat even at level 90, you'd have to do far less to upgrade it than if you just soloed Kil'jaeden weeks on end until you got
Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury
, because
Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest
has a far higher "base" item level than
Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury
.

I use this as an off-hand now with main hand Shadowmourne. Do I do as much damage as other fury warriors? No, but it's surprising how it's not actually that bad. There just isn't an incentive to use a common weapon once you have legendaries. Plus I like to think of myself as the leader, and leaders can be a little idiosynchratic in wanting to use legendaries. I would just like to toss this in here.... I have been playing WoW since release.. I was the MT of a guild that was the first to down Ragnaros on the entire realm... I have been playing day in and day out since then.. and as of 2016.. February that is.. running MC nearly every week, soloing since it was possible EVERY week... I have yet to see a binding drop. SO, to those of you saying "Oh just keep farming it, it'll drop..." SINCERELY FYOU. Nearly 600 runs later, not a single drop of the binding... hell, I am almost afraid to keep farming for it. I will probably get the first binding after 15 years, and spend the next 10 getting the other one. As far as I am concerned, this binding does not exist. OH, and PS, may as well double my numbers, because I have been doing this run on TWO characters this entire time, my warrior, and my rogue... so make that 1,200+ runs and NOT A SINGLE DROP.. Many choice words for those people who got it after "1 year of solid grinding omg i never thought it would drop" have been removed from this post. May god be with you.

I finally completed this today. Been running MC on and off casually on several for a long time, recently got the one half of the binding on my demon hunter.
When that happened, I started prepping my professions (alchemy and mining) to make
Enchanted Elementium Bar
. On my server, these cost 10,000g each, which is very costly, so I decided to DIY the mats as much as I could.
I ended up buying 70
Arcane Crystal
s for about 15,000g. With the mats prepped and the recipes learned, the moment the other binding dropped, I was ready to turn in the quest for it.
Professions you'll need:
Classic Mining 300
Needed to smelt
Enchanted Elementium Bar
The recipe for this,
Goblin's Guide to Elementium
, also drops from a mob in BWL. Should be a 100% drop on a character with Mining trained. If it does not drop for you, check your bank.
To get Mining up to 300, you'll need to
Smelt Dark Iron
By @FrostKittyPaw in the comments for
Goblin's Guide to Elementium
As patch 8.0.1 (8/3/18), currently it is not possible to get 300/300 classic Mining by mining nodes alone. Mining Small Thorium Vein gives up to 290 skill, while Rich Thorium Vein gives up to 295 skill.
You can level mining from 295 to 300 only through Smelt Dark Iron
, which is learned from the quest:
The Spectral Chalice
. If you already completed the quest and need to relearn how to smelt Dark Iron Bar, talk to Gloom'rel in Blackrock Depths.
Classic Alchemy 275
Needed to transmute
Arcanite Bar
You will need to buy
Recipe: Transmute Arcanite
from
Alchemist Pestlezugg
in Tanaris
Base mats you will need to make 10x
Enchanted Elementium Bar
& their sources:
100x
Thorium Ore
(Mining)**
100x
Arcane Crystal
(Mining)**
10x
Elementium Ingot
(Drops from adds in BWL - See wowhead page)
10x
Fiery Core
(Drops from MC adds)
30x
Elemental Flux
(Blacksmithing/Mining vendor)
** with
Transmutation Master
, 100 transmutes yielded 120
Arcanite Bar
s. (Your experience may vary)

I'm now on Week 27 of Killing Baron Geddon & Garr on my Paladin. Got the First Binding from Garr on Week 14. Ever since Week 20 i felt Frustrated with this Farm. I hope im Free soon.
*Edit: i am on Week 47 now. Still only got 1 Binding. From now on i will farm it with every Character that is Eligible to drop the Bindings. ( im aware how stupid/inefficient it was for me to farm it on only 1 Toon for so long. will Update once i get Thunderfury.....
LAST EDIT*: i FINALLY Obtained Thunderfury after 58 Weeks of Farming.
Week 1-47 Only did Geddon & Garr on my Paladin ( DON'T BE LIKE ME AND ONLY USE 1 CHARACTER)
Week 48-58: Did MC on 11 Toons each Week. Got many toons with 1 Binding just chilling.
What did i learn from this past Year/Months of Molten Core ? DONT GRIND IT WITH JUST 1 TOON ! Be smarter than me (which shouldn't be hard)

Can anyone confirm if the whole process of obtaining and transmogging Thunderfury is doable as a monk? Because it says
This item is the final reward of a challenging and very expensive quest line, which can be started by a hunter, paladin, rogue, death knight, or warrior.
Thanks.

If you are doing this post Legion expansion, after you go the guy in Silithis and get the vessel it wants you to turn it back in but the guy just repeats his text. And the marker takes you to an empty spot.
Go to the woman at the camp near Ungoro and ask her to change time to before the sword was plunged in. Then the guy will be in the spot to turn in the quest.

7 characters a week, for 3 years with the occasional missed week. still haven't got this. Absolutely *!@#$ ridiculous. Meanwhile there are guilds in classic with half of their crew wearing a thunderfuy....
Fix the damn drop rate of this.

Farming with many characters. Still no sign. Drop rate is surely weird.

After 3 weeks of farming it with 13 characters per week, I finally obtained the first half from Baron on my Hunter! The adventure continues tho.
I hope that I'll get the 2nd half very soon. Will keep you updated :)
Edit: Week 4, and I got Baron's half on another character. So far, I haven't gotten a single one from Garr. :|
Edit: Week 6, 3x Baron's half now and 1x Garr's half.
Edit: Week 10, finally got both halfs now on a single character and can get my Thunderfury now! YAY

What a moving story. I am sorry for the loss of your friend. but, He left You with something just as important as his friendship. He left You with a Lasting Memory. One that I doubt You will ever forget. For this? I am happy for you. wield Thunder often. If only to hang around the City with. your friend would have liked it that way :) also; congratulations on acquiring that weapon. I forget how many there are per server. but your server? now has one less available . :) I too got lucky this year. I got the second half last month. I now own the weapon on Uldaman. Good Luck in the future.

With the latest patch, both Thunderfury and Sulfuras now require level 30. My character, who is level 25 and has had these weapons for years, is unable to equip them. This is the first time I have seen such a change in previously acquired items, and it has been quite painful to see something that was already mine being taken away.

For anyone playing Evoker/Dracthyr, yes you can grind the Thunderfury and get both bindings and do the questline for the item and have the transmog at the end of the questline, as Evokers can equip One-Handed Swords.
I got the sword/tmog on my evoker and now the appearance is on my account for all classes that can use a One-Handed Sword!

I had picked up one of the bindings, the quest, the essence from ragnaros, and the elementium from the AH. I now cannot find the quest in my logs, nor any of the items including the elementium. WTH?

Just wanted to confirm that, yes, this still drops in Dragonflight, and yes, Evokers can indeed complete the quest chain and get the sword.
I've been running this raid for years on other characters, and never once seen either binding. Ran it randomly on my Evoker one day, and the Garr half dropped, then 3 weeks later the other half dropped.

I'll never forget the evening my Holy Paladin guild master mumbled, "Eeeeeerrryeahhhhhh! I'll take the Thunderfury," as he shattered the dreams of every teenager in the guild.

If you have the bindings on a class that can't use one-handed swords like me (Druid) you still get the appearance after you do the quest! Thank you Warband! I finally got the appearance!
