Archimtiros Important Changes to Leveling a Warrior in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch

There is a new tab on your spellbook between General and your talent specialization, simply titled "Warrior". These are abilities that are now shared by all Warriors regardless of any specialization they choose.

New Warriors will not begin in a default spec (Arms). Until they are allowed to choose a spec at level 10, their abilities are drawn from the general Warrior abilities available to all specializations.

Experienced Warriors will notice some talents have been reworked or rearranged, and may require re-acquiring some talents.

AoE (Area of Effect) caps are being introduced in the Shadowlands pre-patch, which places a limit on how many targets the ability can hit at once. This affects a couple of warrior abilities.

Arms: Use Overpower to increase the damage on your Mortal Strike. Use Execute to finish off (20% of the rage cost is refunded for Arms warriors if the mob survives the Execute). At 19, you can add Colossus Smash into the rotation after Mortal Strike if you need some extra oomph to get to the Execute.

Fury: Use Raging Blow at two charges, and Bloodthirst for damage and extra healing through the fight. Rampage is a great ability, particularly for a long boss fight, but at 80 Rage it's an expensive ability. If you are AoE pulling, this should generate enough rage for you to begin Whirlwind; later you can add the level 30 talent Dragon Roar and the level 45 Bladestorm to your AoE arsenal.

Protection: Open with Shield Slam, then Thunder Clap, Revenge, and Devastate. Later, you can also open with the level 32 talent Avatar. Maintain Shield Block whenever you are tanking enemies. Use Ignore Pain (40 Rage) if you have Rage to spare, but be sure not to sacrifice Shield Block (30 Rage) to get it, since this is your most important line of defense.

Level 15 Talents

War Machine Your auto attacks generate 10% more Rage. Killing an enemy instantly generates 10 Rage, and increases your movement speed by 30% for 8 sec.

Sudden Death Your attacks have a chance to reset the cooldown of Execute and make it usable on any target, regardless of their health.

Skullsplitter Bash an enemy's skull, dealing Physical damage.

Level 25 Talents

Double Time Increases the maximum number of charges on Charge by 1, and reduces its cooldown by 3 sec.

Impending Victory Instantly attack the target, causing (50% of Attack power) damage and healing you for 30% of your maximum health. Killing an enemy that yields experience or honor resets the cooldown of Impending Victory. Replaces Victory Rush.

Storm Bolt Hurls your weapon at an enemy, causing Physical damage and stunning for 4 sec.

Level 30 Talents

Massacre Execute is now usable on targets below 35% health.

Fervor of Battle Whirlwind also applies Slam to your primary target.

Rend Wounds the target, causing Physical damage instantly and additional Bleed damage over 15 sec. Increases critical damage you deal to the enemy by 10%.

Level 35 Talents

Second Wind Restores 6% health every 1 sec when you have not taken damage for 5 sec.

Bounding Stride Reduces the cooldown on Heroic Leap by 15 sec, and Heroic Leap now also increases your run speed by 70% for 3 sec.

A defensive combat state that reduces all damage you take by 20%, and all damage you deal by 10%. Lasts until cancelled.

Level 40 Talents

Collateral Damage When Sweeping Strikes ends, your next Whirlwind deals 25% increased damage for each ability used during Sweeping Strikes that damaged a second target.

Warbreaker Smash the ground and shatter the armor of all enemies within 8 yds, dealing Physical damage and increasing damage you deal to them by 30% for 10 sec. Replaces Colossus Smash.

Cleave Strikes up to 5 enemies in front of you for Physical damage, inflicting . Cleave will consume your Overpower effect to deal increased damage.

Level 45 Talents

In For The Kill Colossus Smash increases your Haste by 10%, or by 20% if the target is below 20% health. Lasts 10 sec.

Avatar Transform into a colossus for 20 sec, causing you to deal 20% increased damage and removing all roots and snares.

Deadly Calm Reduces the Rage cost of your next 4 abilities by 100%. Passive: Your maximum Rage is increased by 30.

Level 50 Talents

Anger Management Every 20 Rage you spend reduces the remaining cooldown on Warbreaker /Colossus Smash and Bladestorm by 1 sec.

Dreadnaught Overpower has 2 charges and causes a seismic wave, dealing damage to up to 5 enemies in a 10 yd line.

Throws a whirling weapon at the target location that chases nearby enemies, inflicting Physical damage and applying Deep Wounds to up to 8 enemies over 12 sec. Replaces Bladestorm.

Massacre Execute is now usable on targets below 35% health.

Frenzy Rampage increases your Haste by 3% for 12 sec, stacking up to 3 times. This effect is reset if you Rampage a different primary target.

Onslaught Brutally attack an enemy for Physical damage. Requires Enrage.

Level 35 Talents

Furious Charge Charge also increases the healing from your next Bloodthirst by 250%.

Bounding Stride Reduces the cooldown on Heroic Leap by 15 sec, and Heroic Leap now also increases your run speed by 70% for 3 sec.

Warpaint You take 10% reduced damage while Enrage is active.

Level 40 Talents

Seethe Bloodthirst generates 2 more Rage, or 4 more Rage when it critically strikes your primary target.

Rampage has a 20% chance to immediately refund 40 Rage.

Cruelty While Enraged, Raging Blow deals 20% more damage and has a 30% chance to instantly reset its own cooldown.

Level 45 Talents

Meat Cleaver Whirlwind deals 30% more damage and now affects your next 4 single-target melee attacks, instead of the next 2 attacks.

Dragon Roar Roar explosively, dealing Physical damage to all enemies within 12 yds. Dragon Roar critically strikes for 3 times normal damage.

Bladestorm Become an unstoppable storm of destructive force, striking up to 8 nearby targets for Physical damage over 4 sec. You are immune to movement impairing and loss of control effects, but can use defensive abilities and avoid attacks.

Level 50 Talents

Anger Management Every 20 Rage you spend reduces the remaining cooldown on Recklessness by 1 sec.

Recklessness generates 50 Rage and greatly empowers Bloodthirst and Raging Blow.

Siegebreaker Break the enemy's defenses, dealing Physical damage, and increasing your damage done to the target by 15% for 10 sec.

While the tree above recommends , it's actually a tossup between that and Anger Management. If you're big into pressing your big cooldowns, use Anger Management; otherwise, pick . It's a playstyle choice.

Shadowlands Protection Warrior Leveling Talents

Level 15 Talents

Your auto attacks generate 10% more Rage. Killing an enemy instantly generates 10 Rage, and increases your movement speed by 30% for 8 sec.

Punish Shield Slam deals 20% increased damage, and reduces enemies' damage against you by 3% for 9 sec. Multiple punishments may overlap.

Devastator Your auto attacks deal an additional Physical damage and have a 20% chance to reset the remaining cooldown on Shield Slam.

Level 25 Talents

Double Time Increases the maximum number of charges on Charge by 1, and reduces its cooldown by 3 sec.

Rumbling Earth When Shockwave strikes at least 3 targets, its cooldown is reduced by 15 sec.

Skullsplitter Bash an enemy's skull, dealing Physical damage.

Level 30 Talents

Best Served Cold Revenge deals 20% more damage, or 50% more damage when your successful dodges or parries have made it cost no Rage.

Booming Voice Demoralizing Shout also generates 40 Rage, and increases damage you deal to affected targets by 20%.

Dragon Roar Roar explosively, dealing Physical damage to all enemies within 12 yds. Dragon Roar critically strikes for 3 times normal damage.

Level 35 Talents

Crackling Thunder Thunder Clap 's radius is increased by 50%, and it reduces movement speed by an additional 10%.

Bounding Stride Reduces the cooldown on Heroic Leap by 15 sec, and Heroic Leap now also increases your run speed by 70% for 3 sec.

Menace Intimidating Shout will knock back all nearby enemies except your primary target, and cause them all to cower in fear for 15 sec instead of fleeing.

Level 40 Talents

Never Surrender Ignore Pain prevents 40% to 100% more damage, based on your missing health.

Indomitable Your maximum health is increased by 10%, and every 10 Rage you spend heals you for 1% of your maximum health.

Level 45 Talents

Into the Fray You gain 2% Haste for each enemy or ally within 10 yards, up to 10% Haste.

Storm Surge Avatar increases the damage of Thunder Clap by 30%, and reduces its cooldown by 50%.

Ravager Throws a whirling weapon at the target location that chases nearby enemies, inflicting Physical damage to up to 8 enemies over 12 sec.

Level 50 Talents

Anger Management Every 10 Rage you spend reduces the remaining cooldown on Avatar and Shield Wall by 1 sec.

Heavy Repercussions Shield Slam generates 3 more Rage and extends the duration of Shield Block by 1.0 sec.

Bolster Last Stand's cooldown is reduced by 1 min, and it grants you the Shield Block effect for its duration.

Protection is the obvious spec to go with for dungeon leveling. Dungeon queues are perpetually short of tanks, so you'll find yourself getting a group nearly instantly, instead of having to wait 15 minutes (or longer) for a group as a DPS class.

Arms and Fury warriors can also be useful in a popular type of dungeon group that surfaced in WoW Classic: the dungeon cleave group. This is a fast-paced strategy, and often groups will spend hours at a time in a particular dungeon. Both specs have strong AoE multiple-target damage abilities, including Whirlwind, Bladestorm, for both, the level 40 talent Cleave for Arms and the level 45 talent Dragon Roar for Fury. Use the same dungeon techniques described above to slow runners, interrupt or reflect spells, and use Shouts to buff the group.

Just remember that you will need to rely on your healer for most of your healing, as Victory Rush does not proc unless you get the killing blow. Arms warriors can step back to let their Second Wind catch them up a little, but this may not work depending on how fast the group is moving through the dungeon.

Best Weapons and Gear for Leveling a Warrior in Shadowlands

Arms is optimized one heavy-hitting two-handed weapon, such as a two-handed Polearm, Sword, Axe, or Mace. A Staff is also possible, but these are usually specced for Intellect and Agility, not Strength. Arms warriors cannot dual wield.

Fury warriors dual-wield either one-handed or two-handed weapons starting at level 14 with the passive Fury abilities Titan's Grip: Single-Minded Fury and Titan's Grip. While you can dual wield one of each type, there is no benefit to doing so; the speed and damage increases of Titan's Grip: Single-Minded Fury only work if you have two 1h-weapons equipped simultaneously.

Protection warriors' abilities and strengths rely on the use of a one-handed weapon with a Shield, colloquially known as "sword and board". Many important Protection warrior abilities do not work without a Shield equipped.

(3) Set: Increases your out-of-combat regeneration in the outdoors, normal dungeons and battlegrounds.

(4) Set: Gaining a level triggers Burst of Knowledge, dealing Holy damage to nearby enemies and granting you 40% primary stat for 2 minutes. Defeating additional enemies extends this effect, up to 2 additional minutes.

(6) Set: Rested experience consumed is reduced by an additional 30%.

Levels 1-10: Your race's Starting Area or Exile's Reach

Levels 10-50: Battle for Azeroth zones or other expansion zones via Chromie Time

Levels 50-60: Shadowlands Storyline or Threads of Fate

The original Azeroth continents of Kalimdor and East Kingdoms offer great variety and nostalgia, with many of the base lore stories that serve as the base of the entire series.

Burning Crusade has some of the best dungeons of the expansions, with interesting variety and not a lot of complicated mechanics.

Wrath of the Lich King offers a linear story that provides much of the basis of events that are coming up in Shadowlands.

Cataclysm is more like a series of vignettes, with each of the five zones offering a different but contained story line.

Pandaria's beauty and humor appeal to those who like a good story, but also enjoy the more lighthearted side of things.

Draenor introduces the Garrison, a player-built development with your own choices of buildings. Its tone is overall much more grim and dark.

Legion offers the artifact weapons and Class Halls, which give interesting developments to your character as a class member.

Battle for Azeroth, as the expansion just prior to Shadowlands, gives the immediate story just prior to Shadowlands, so is a good choice for players who may be returning after a long hiatus and need to get caught up on the lore.

At level 2, you learn Charge, an ability that lets you Charge at an enemy between 8-25 yards. This is a very important ability for early Rage generation, as it generates 10 Rage.

At level 3, you learn Shield Slam, which lams the target with your shield, causing Physical damage. It does require an equipped Shield, which Fury and Arms warriors do not use.

At level 4, you learn Hamstring, an ability that does little damage but reduces movement speed of your target for 15 seconds. Great for dealing with "runners". Costs 10 Rage.

At level 5, you learn Victory Rush, which heals you for 10% of your maximum health if you hit your next target within 30 seconds of killing an enemy that yields experience and honor. Mastering the Victory Rush mechanic is key to warrior soloing survival.

At level 6, you learn Shield Block, which blocks all melee attacks for 6 seconds, and also requires an equipped Shield to use. Costs 30 Rage.

At level 7, you learn Pummel, which interrupts spellcasting and prevents all spells from that school being cast for 4 sec. This is a critical group utility skill for Warriors, not just a good self-protection against hard-hitting casters. (After using this for awhile, you also learn that not everything can be interrupted. Hint: if the enemy's cast bar is grey, don't waste Rage on Pummel because it won't do anything)

At level 8, you will learn the second rank of Charge, which causes your Charge ability to generate more Rage.

At level 9, you get your first AoE (area of effect) ability, Whirlwind. This damages up to 5 targets per strike. It costs 30 Rage, but will become more useful as Rage generation improves.

At level 10, you learn, Execute, attempting to finish off a foe with a huge hit when the enemy is under 20% health.

General Warrior Class Abilities

Victory Rush (level 11, Rank 2): Heals for an additional 10% of maximum health.

Taunt (level 14): Taunt the target to attack you. Less useful for Arms and Fury, but can help in some situations

Ignore Pain (level 17): Ignore 50% of damage taken, prevents some damage. Costs 40 Rage.

Shield Block (level 22, Rank 2): Shield Block has 2 charges.

Heroic Throw (level 24): Throw your weapon, generating high threat. 8-30 yards. Not a lot of damage, but it's your first real ability to pull from distance.

Berserker Rage (level 29): Removes and grants immunity to Fear, Sap, and incapacitate effects for 6 sec.

Heroic Leap (level 33): Leap forward 8-40 yards to a target location, doing physical damage to all enemies within 8 yards. Also handy for getting out of bad ground effects, getting up to difficult ledges, or going down certain distances without taking falling damage.

Intimidating Shout (level 34): Causes targeted enemy to cower in fear, and up to 5 additional enemies within 8 yards to flee. Use with caution in crowded areas.

Battle Shout (level 39): Increases attack power for all raid and party members within 100 yards for 1 hour. Keep it up on yourself at all times too.

Shattering Throw (level 41): 30 yard range, causes physical damage, ignores armor, and removes magical immunities. Also does 500% damage to absorb shields. Has a much longer cooldown than Heroic Throw (3 min vs 6 sec) so should be saved for dealing with big, heavy hitters and bosses.

Intervene (level 43): Run to an ally, intercepting all melee and ranged attacks against them for 6 sec while they remain in 10 yards.

Rallying Cry (level 46): Grants all party/raid members within 40 yards 15% temporary and maximum health for 10 sec.

Spell Reflection (level 47): Raise your shield/weapon, reflecting spells cast on you and reducing magic damage by 20%. Despite the icon, this does not require a shield to use.

Challenging Shout (level 54): Taunt all enemies within 10 yds to attack you for 6 sec.

Rallying Cry (level 56, Rank 2): Grants an additional 5% temporary and maximum health.

Arms Warrior Class Abilities

Mortal Strike (level 10): A vicious strike that deals Physical damage and reduces the effectiveness of healing on the target. Costs 30 Rage.

Mastery: Deep Wounds (Passive) (level 10): Mortal Strike, Warbreaker, Colossus Smash, Cleave, , and Bladestorm inflict Deep Wounds, dealing (60% of Attack power) Bleed damage over 12 sec and increasing the damage the enemy takes from you by 9.0%.

Overpower (level 12): Overpower the enemy, dealing Physical damage and increasing the damage of the next Mortal Strike or Cleave by 20%. Cannot be blocked, dodged, or parried. Use prior to Mortal Strike to increase its effectiveness.

Improved Execute (level 13, Rank 2): Execute no longer has a cooldown.

(level 18, Rank 3): If your foe survives, 20% of the Rage spent is refunded.

(level 19): Smashes the enemy's armor, dealing Physical damage, and increasing damage you deal to them by 30% for 10 sec.

Slam (level 20, Rank 2): Damage increased by 60%.

Piercing Howl (level 21): Snares all enemies within 12 yards, reducing their movement speed.

Sweeping Strikes (level 22): For 12 sec your single-target damaging abilities hit 1 additional target within 8 yds for 75% damage.

Die by the Sword (level 23): Increases parry chance and decreases all damage for 8 sec.

Seasoned Soldier (Passive) (level 27): Your auto attack critical strikes generate 30% more Rage.

Martial Prowess (level 28, Rank 2): Overpower increases damage of your next Mortal Strike or Cleave by 20%.

Tactician (Passive) (level 32): You have a 1.40% chance per Rage spent on damaging abilities to reset the remaining cooldown on Overpower.

Colossus Smash (level 37, Rank 2): Cooldown reduced by 45 sec.

Bladestorm (level 38): Become an unstoppable storm of destructive force, striking up to 8 nearby targets for Physical damage over 6 sec. You are immune to movement impairing and loss of control effects, but can use defensive abilities and can avoid attacks.

Sweeping Strikes (level 42, Rank 2): Cooldown reduced by 15 sec.

Mortal Strike (level 44, Rank 2): Damage increased by 20%.

Slam (level 48, Rank 2): Damage increased by 25%.

Overpower (level 49, Rank 2): Overpower's bonus to Mortal Strike can stack up to 2 times.

Die by the Sword (level 52, Rank 2): Cooldown reduced by 60 sec.

Sweeping Strikes (level 58, Rank 3): Duration increased by 3 sec.

Fury Warrior Class Abilities

Bloodthirst (level 10): Assault the target in a bloodthirsty craze, dealing Physical damage and restoring 3% of your health.

Enrage (level 10, Passive): Becoming Enraged increases your damage done by 11%. Bloodthirst has a 30% chance to Enrage you.

Mastery: Unshackled Fury (Passive) (level 10): Increases damage done while Enraged by 11.0%.

Raging Blow (level 12): A mighty blow with both weapons that deals Physical damage. Generates 12 Rage.

Improved Execute (level 13, Rank 2): Execute no longer costs Rage.

Titan's Grip: Single-Minded Fury (level 14, Passive): While dual-wielding a pair of one-handed weapons, your damage done is increased by 10% and your movement speed is increased by 5%.

Titan's Grip (level 14, Passive): Allows you to dual-wield a pair of two-handed weapons. Two-handed weapons deal more damage, and provide more Strength and Stamina, than one-handed weapons.

(level 18, Rank 3): Execute generates 20 Rage.

Rampage (level 19): Unleashes a series of 4 brutal strikes for Physical damage. Costs 80 Rage.

Enrage (level 20, Rank 2): Enrage increases your Haste by 15%.

Piercing Howl (level 21): Snares all enemies within 12 yards, reducing their movement speed.

Whirlwind (level 22, Rank 2): Whirlwind no longer costs Rage. Instead it generates 3 Rage, plus an additional 1 per target hit. Maximum 8 Rage.

Enraged Regeneration (level 23): Reduces damage taken by 30%, and Bloodthirst restores an additional 20% health. Usable while stunned. Lasts 8 sec.

Raging Blow (level 27, Rank 2): Raging Blow has a 20% chance to instantly reset its own cooldown.

Rampage (level 28, Rank 2): Rampage causes you to become Enraged.

Enraged Regeneration (level 32, Rank 2): Cooldown reduced by 60 sec.

Improved Whirlwind (level 37, Rank 3): Whirlwind causes your next 2 single-target attacks to strike up to 4 additional targets for 50% damage.

Recklessness (level 38): Go berserk, increasing all Rage generation by 100% and granting your abilities 20% increased critical strike chance for 10 sec. Generates 40 Rage.

Raging Blow (level 42, Rank 3): Raging Blow has 2 charges.

Rampage (level 44, Rank 3): Damage increased by 20%.

Bloodthirst (level 48, Rank 2): Damage increased by 30%.

Enrage (level 49, Rank 3): Enrage increases your movement speed by 10%.

Recklessness (level 52, Rank 2): Duration increased by 2 sec.

(level 58, Rank 4): Damage increased by 15%.

Protection Warrior Class Abilities

Mastery: Critical Block (Passive) (level 10): Increases your chance to block and your chance to critically block (blocking twice the amount). Also increases your attack power.

Shield Slam (level 10, Rank 2): Shield Slam generates 15 Rage.

Revenge (level 12): Swing in a wide arc, dealing Physical damage to all enemies in front of you. Deals reduced damage beyond 5 targets. Your successful dodges and parries have a chance to make your next Revenge cost no Rage. Costs 20 Rage.

Improved Execute (level 13, Rank 2): Execute no longer has a cooldown.

Devastate (level 14): A direct strike, dealing Physical damage.

(level 18, Rank 3): If your foe survives, 20% of the Rage spent is refunded.

Thunder Clap (level 19): Blasts all enemies within 8 yards for Physical damage(level 20): Hardened by battle, your Stamina is increased by 25%, and your armor is increased by 50% of your Strength.

Shockwave (level 21): Sends a wave of force in a frontal cone, causing damage and stunning all enemies within 10 yards for 2 sec.

Shield Wall (level 23): Reduces all damage you take by 40% for 8 sec.

Demoralizing Shout (level 27): Demoralizes all enemies within 10 yards, reducing the damage they deal to you by 10% for 8 sec.

Shield Slam (level 28, Rank 3): Devastate, Thunder Clap, Revenge, and Execute have a 30% chance to reset the remaining cooldown on Shield Slam.

Ignore Pain (level 29, Rank 2): Cooldown reduced by 11 sec.

Avatar (level 32): Transform into a colossus for 20 sec, causing you to deal 20% increased damage and removing all roots and snares. Generates 20 Rage.

(level 37, Rank 2): Thunder Clap reduces the movement speed of enemies by 20% for 10 sec.

Last Stand (level 38): Increases maximum health by 30% for 15 sec, and instantly heals you for that amount.

(Passive) (level 42): Devastate and Revenge also cause the enemy to bleed for (73.5% of Attack power) Physical damage over 15 sec.

Riposte (level 42, Passive): You gain Parry equal to 100% of your Critical Strike from gear.

Shield Slam (level 44, Rank 4): Damage increased by 20%.

Vanguard (level 48, Rank 2): Stamina increased by an additional 20%, and armor is increased by an additional 40% of your Strength.

Demoralizing Shout (level 49, Rank 2): Reduces the damage enemies deal to you by an additional 10%.

Avatar (level 52, Rank 2): Avatar generates 10 extra Rage.

Shield Wall (level 58, Rank 2): Reduces damage taken by an additional 10%.

A warriors resource is rage not fury.

Arms uses Mortal strike not Heroic strike.

Arms is a straightforward damage dealer who uses a single two-handed weapon to attack, and Victory Rush to sustain themselves from combat to combat. Rage is generated entirely through auto-attacks and Charge, and spent on various abilities.

Typically considered the easiest and best leveling spec from 1-110.

I would suggest anyone trying warrior for the first time to definitely go Fury for dps. It can be a little frustrating until level 40 when you get Whirlwind, but after that, there's pretty much no reason you can't top the meters in dungeon groups or solo any proper level rare or quest mob. Fury warrior flows smoothly with there never being a time where you're just auto-attacking while waiting for rage or a proc like I've experienced with Arms. I've tried Arms here and there at different levels and it feels very slow and clunky to me.

Over the past 12 years I've played every spec in the game and Fury is the only one that is like autopilot to me. And I didn't even start playing a warrior until Legion.

Victory Rush is now available for all Warrior specializations. I would argue this makes Fury just as viable as a leveling specialization.
