Love this new skill, reflects single target spells including polymorph and works on some boss's.

This is the best new skill in my opinion and its finaly given warriors a fair chance agains casters. Made a mage 1 shot himself within 5 mins of having this skill.

To counter it, it's wise to use some harmless spell, like Detect Magic or Ice Lance (which deals only a minimal damage if you're not frozen).
It'll receive a new animations which makes it easier to notice, but some addons might help you as well, for example Natur EnemyCastBar ( http://wow-en.curse-gaming.com/downloads/addons/combat/natur-enemycastbar/ ) - it generates a sound warning and shows its duration as well. =)

Umm, you sure that works? Spell Reflect is instant and I don't recall any instant cast "spells" ever appearing on the built-in enemy cast bar.

Quick and easy stance dance Spell Reflect macro.

/cast Defensive Stance
/cast Bloodrage
/equipslot 16 NAME OF 1H WEAPON HERE
/equipslot 17 NAME OF SHIELD HERE
/cast Spell Reflection

You can take out the /cast Bloodrage if you have 3/3 Tactical Mastery because normally stancing you have only 10 rage if you don't.

I'm 99% sure I reflected a crippling poison yesterday in WSG :)
Also it's a great tanking skill, I can tank multiple caster mobs just by using reflect on every cooldown.

It apparently works on fear effects, like from the sirens in SV or from a warlock. Be careful when you activate this ability when tanking a mob which can cast fear while in an instance!

Reflecting Shadow Word Death will cause the enemy to take 2x Damage. (damage from the spell reflected, and it didn't kill you so they'll take the extra failed-to-get-killed damage)

"A few" things worth noting:

What I'm not sure about:

If a mage with Frostbite has his/her Frostbolt reflected, will it retain the chance to proc Frostbite?
If there are multiple effects on you that reflect spells (this and Sheen of Zanza for example), which effect is used up? (Both?)
If a caster with Fire Ward and Molten Shields active has his/her Fireball reflected (and it procs), who will take damage? Will it fly to the Warrior, back to the Mage, then back to the Warrior again? (Same as with Engineering Trinkets)

This has no effect on me owning warriors as a mage whatsoever. Just cast fireball rank one when you see them do it. fireball rank one is a 1 sec cast and then cast frostbolt as usual and watch the warrior get angry at you.

The question that begs to be asked is; can you reflect a channeling spell such as life drain mid channel? For example what would happen if you turned on spell reflection half way through a life drain from an enemy warlock? Also would it reflect the remainder of the spell or just one tick (if at all?)

If I were to guess about your second question, I would be inclined to suggest that both effects would most likely be consumed. As a general rule, in the past Blizzard has proven quite a few times that unless they specifically program multiple events with the same trigger to function with a dependence upon one another, they generally both fire at once. The most notable example I can think of would be when procs could proc other procs, but if you look at nearly any set of patch notes, you will see fixes that revolve around this concept.

If someone could test and confirm this suspicion, as well as report it to Blizzard, it's likely they'll fix it in a later patch.

Nobody has mentioned the threat from this. I'm assuming the threat is just the damage value you deal multiplied by whatever you have (defiance, defensive stance etc).

I know that I can hold a caster on me over healing aggro pretty well using just this while i control melee.

Does the reflection itself cause aggro or jsut the damage?

Is there a macro, that can be click one time and make the below action work: change to Battle Stance, equip 1h weapon and shield, than cast Spell Reflection.
I thought it can be work, because these three ability have different cooldown. But I write a macro and it must click twince. Can anyone give me a workble macro.

If you happen to reflect a mages' spellsteal ability, the mage will lose one of their buffs.

This always puzzled me as in one of those paradoxical situations where "What would happen if you spell reflected a spell steal?"

Now you don't have to level a Mage and Warrior to 70 on separate accounts to find out.

It is possible to reflect a PoM+Phyroblast after it was released. So even if it doesn't apply to spells with casting, instant spells can be reflected after beeing cast. Tested it, it is possible.

Don't know, there might have been a change that allows it.

Not only spells can be reflected. Works with most curses, some diseases and a few poison effects as well.

Curses, as far as I know, are spells. (it would be stupid if Cloak of Shadows didn't remove curse of agony)

Try this next time you go up against a Frost mage in pvp, once they freeze you and blink away to do a frostbolt/ice lance shatter combo switch to defensive and pop a shield on because you can reflect both spells XD.

As of this expansion, the reflected spell now inherits your "frozen" status, making this ability significantly stronger against frost mages. In particular, ice lance is no longer a very appealing way to eat up the reflection; it'll even reflect deep freeze.

This also makes spell reflect a good counter to a fingers of frost proc.

It works on lots, if not all, Outland bosses.
This spell is especially handy in the instance Dark Portal with the Shadow Pyroblast or Frost bolt caster minibosses.
Time it well to get a Pyroblast relfected and you see the boss' HP drop for a nice chunk.

From what i've been trying so far. This doesn't work with Northrend bosses. Or at least, not in Utgarde Keep or The Nexus.

Also some DKs spellattacks/diseases can't be reflected.

Is it me? Or does the animation for using this seem to only show for the user?

Before WotLK, every time I dueled while waiting for my group to find a healer, dps, off tank, etc. The other guy will just stop casting and wait, but after the expansion, every time, and I mean every time, people will keep casting their spell.

I was fighting a mage casting pyro blast, out of range because my charge was on cooldown :(
Half way through his casting I popped spell reflect, there was nothing else to distract him, hell, we were in a green area, so a glowing blue shield above my head is really noticable, and he just kept casting, eventually killing himself.

I also had a few time that happened in the battlegrounds, but I always put that off as "Too much going on" But since that duel, I began to develop that idea.

For mages.. If you see warrior using this and you are low on health, sometimes it is worth it to polymorph yourself and get your health back. :)

King Ymiron's Bane proc can be reflected!

As soon as he finishes casting Bane, throw reflect up and start using every ability you have. If you got melee in the group and have imp. Reflect, have them stand next to you for even more DPS.

This spell is an excellent ability when you're tanking Ring of Blood in Nagrand, since it can reflect Mogor's http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=16033!
Reflecting the Chain Lightnings can easily change the outcome of the fight, giving your group a much greater chance to defeat Mogor since healers will save a lot of mana, not to mention it does a significant amount of damage back at him!

I noticed with the Nascent Val'kyr in Storm Peaks when they cast Touch of the val'kyr if you reflect while they are casting you reflect the first tick only and take all the rest but if you wait untill the cast is done, you take the first tick but reflect all the rest.

-This spell wins arena games for you, often.

-Macro-maniacs: if you don't want to spend points in tactical mastery but you still need to stance-dance, use a macro with /cast battle;defensive
/equip blabla
/cast bloodrage
/cast spell reflection (i always tend to forget those last letters :s)

-Try to keep this for cc, big incomming blasts or situations where you know a caster is going to spam an instant spell right after the cast (it reflects twice for one charge, economical)

-Don't use this right away, many serious pvp players have a clue what spell reflection is and they try to avoid it, use it at the last moment to garentuee the hit and the waste of the casters time

-keep your shield up while the buff is there, you'll lose the buff if you switch weapons again

-watch PoM and Elemental mastery buffs on enemies

-If your a dk, go undead and death coil on the warrior

-One of the coolest spells in wow, and a trademark for warriors

As of patch 3.2 this spell is no longer reflects many spells reflectable prior to 3.2. I won't go into lists of examples, but once such case is using Improved Spell Reflect in Malygos phase 2 (I haven't tested this in 25 man).

It seems Spell Reflect has taken yet another kick in the crotch on the PvE side of the game. Which is a shame, being a unique ability.

Frankly, I find it disappointing that an ability such as this is not clarified in any form about it's functions outside of PvP. Many spells which are clearly direct damage spells are unreflectable and it's a shame that it's just taken that way.

Anyway, many spells have been made unreflectable and I'm unsure of whether it's a bug, but I find it more likely that it's a fix. An example of this is the Carrion Swarm cast by Mal'Ganis in Culling of Stratholme, although to be fair in this case, the spell is slightly of the AoE variety.

I don't recall seeing it in patch notes or in any comments here, but if you read tooltips closely, you'll notice this is now usable in battle stance as well. This is not a typo on wowhead's part either, it is in-game also.

Now your macros won't have to include going into defensive stance in order for non-protection specced warriors. Yay! :D

Edit: My warrior has a few levels to go for spell reflection, so if anyone could please test this that is able to do so?

This skill is bugged similar to a rogue's vanish. If you use it towards the end of an opponents cast, it will still hit you even though your spell reflect is up.

This is most noticeable when attempting to reflect polymorphs in pvp. You'll be sitting in a polymorph with your spell reflect buff on you.

by far the most amusing spell to reflect is the shadowblast in heroic old kingdom i do not know why but when you reflect it it hits for about 50k which just makes me laugh

When using this in PvE enviroments (instances etc.) it tends to be that most spells that can't be interupted normally also cannot be reflected. No reflecting super nukes from bosses.

Putting the line
/stopcasting
at the beginning of the macro helps in pvp to cancel heroic strike or cleave 1st. if you are rooted and try to cast spell reflect with heroic strike or cleave pending on the swing timer, you won't equip your shield or 1H-er and therefore can't spell reflect.

Very good defensive ability for caster gankers. Used it on a stupid lock who did soul fire and almost killed herself because she life tapped her self nearly to death. then i amazingly finished the level 80 lock off. i was very amazed.

Hi, this is my first wowhead comment so go easy on me. :)

After finally getting this ability, I test it alot. Here's a general idea on how it works from my experience:

- In PvE, most abilitys that is casted but from a NPC without mana wont get reflected.
- If it's more like a mobs usual attack, instead of a skill, it won't get reflected.
- In PvP, vs a mage for example, it reflects everything except AoE's, like blizzard etc.
- Think I readsomewhere that channeled spells only reflect the first tic, but from my 3.3.3 experience with it, it reflects the whole thing. I killed around 4 mages with reflecting their whole arcane missiles in one reflect, really useful (worked with arcane missiles and penance).
- Most of paladins skills are treated as physical attacks, judgements, hammer of wrath, but it reflects Hammer of Justice and Exorcism.
- Useable in battle stance and Protective stance, so you can macro it into changing your 2 hander for your 1h and shield, to use it instantly in battle stance aswell, so you don't loose alot of rage from stance dancing. :)

Am I the only one who noticed that as of Sept 14, 2010 the Cataclysm tooltip doesn't say "requires shield" anymore, meaning that it could possibly be cast while still having one or two 2Handed weapon equipped!

I would appreciate someone on the Beta to confirm that or something. That be very sweet if they made the actual change! Much more useful in PvP, while DPSing.

Although I think the tooltip suggest that the next (single) spell that is cast at you is reflected, I'm 99% sure it doesn't work exactly as intended.

In my experience if i see the warrior pop spell reflect you can waste it by using a debuff that you dont mind being on you like curse of weakness and then continue casting safely until the next spell reflect.

However, there have been many occasions in battlegrounds where i'll be unloading on a warrior and suddenly 2 of my incinerates are flying back at me. Recently, I've had 2 of my spells and saw a mage's spell reflecting back at him off of one warrior. I'd like to know that once one spell is reflected i can keep spamming, but if im burning down a warrior i have to stop to make sure i don't get a few casts of fire to my own face. Sometimes it even seems to last the duration of the the spell reflect effect even though spells have been reflected.

Which is the intended interaction?
I assume the first scenario is how it should work. Anyone know anything about this or have similar interactions happen to you?

Personally I just started getting into Arena's but recently I noticed something that might interest some of you. I charged in/used Commading Shout (macro) while as a precaution also used spell reflection. I had charged a Paladin, right as I did this he had used his Hammer of Justice and it was reflected back at him and he was stunned for the full 6 seconds. The look on my face was pretty priceless to say the least. I really hope Blizzard doesn't change that.

I play mostly as a protection warrior for both PvP and PvE but with the recent change to being able to use spell reflection in battle stance I think everyone should at least try out a macro for switching to a 1H and shield during heavy burst. (Frost Mage CCing you). This really saves your life.

An ability like smite would instantly trigger spell reflect, but spells like incinerate and fireball have a small window of travel before they actually interact with their target. Thus you get situations where one spell reflect can reflect two spells, or a grounding totem absorbs 2 spells. It also might have something to do with latency due to these spell travel times.

Disclaimer: this post is based on the current PTR Patch 4.1. Things may change come final Patch 4.1.

As of today, PTR Patch 4.1 notes state "Spell Reflection cooldown has been increased to 25 seconds, up from 10".

This makes me sad. I'm sure this affects PvP, too, but I'm mainly PvE. I use this a lot in dungeons and raids. This is a nerf to warrior tanking. I hope Blizzard thinks about what they are doing before the official patch 4.1 release.

Side note, Pummel will now be available in all stances replacing Shield Bash which is a slight nerf unless they change the silence timing as well as dazing effect.

There are certain fights in PvE that I make a point to have this sucker on cooldown.
Grand Vizier Ertan, for example, all of his damage is from Lightning bolts. So, Spell reflect 'em, get rage, do damage, GG.

Another super useful spot for this is against Zanzil in heroic Zul'Gurub. Those Voodoo bolts are reflectable, hit him for a pretty solid 30k or higher.

One of my favorite skills as a tank.

Seen this technique in one of Swifty's videos, and I can confirm it works brilliantly.
When you're fighting a druid and you see it pops Nature's Grasp, you get rooted and the druid starts to run away, it will have 2 stacks of the buff left, so you can use Spell Reflection, and then Heroic Throw, then the druid will in fact root itself!

I think it would be more balancing to make it reflect ALL spells for the duration, or add a glyph to do that. It would definitely be noticeable against players who continue spamming spells successfully (arcane mage, moonkin) even when they notice a warrior casting spell reflect. There are many players who simply ignore the fact that warriors have this, because it's not a threat.

This wouldn't give arms/fury warriors a huge advantage either because a shield has to be equipped. It would be better insurance against faceroll spam, and those facerollers will realize they should polish their tactics.

My Arms warrior's macro for this spell:

#showtooltip Spell Reflection(Battle, Defensive Stance)
/equipslot 16 1hWeaponame
/equipslot 17 Shieldname
/cast Spell Reflection(Battle, Defensive Stance)
/equipslot 16 2hWeaponname

At the first click, you will equip you shield and 1h Weapon.
At the second click you will cast Spell Reflection.
To switch back to your 2h Weapon, hold shift while clicking macro.
To change modifier, change "shift" to whatever you desire.
Performing the last step of the macro will cancel the your Spell Reflection buff, but if it has ended due to either usage or fade, it will just switch back to your 2h Weapon :D

As of 5.4 PTR this and Shield Wall no longer require a shield to use, and will display the animation of having a shield for the duration of the effect

As of 5.4, since it no longer requires a shield, this ability shows the model of High Warlord's Shield Wall for Horde players and Grand Marshal's Aegis for the Alliance along with the old defense graphic.

This only happens if you don't have another shield equipped.
If you are dual-wielding, your off-hand weapon will be replaced by one of the shields linked above.
Shield Wall works in a similiar manner, but using its own defense graphics.
