Best in Slot Gear for Retribution Paladin Phase 2

Hit - Aim for 8% Hit%, 263 rating, because all of your abilities are under some form of hit requirement.

Strength out the wazzoo - Everything you have scales with both ap and spell power, and strength gives you the most bang for your buck for that.

Crit / Agi - Your next prio stat, this is very strong as many of your abilities will proc Righteous Vengeance.

Expertise - after this point your expertise is the next thing to keep an eye on. This is much lower value than hit because your Judgement, Hammer of Wrath, Exorcism, and Consecration all ignore dodge possibilities.

Haste - This is still decent but not nearly as good as it was in TBC. This will have some issues where Exorcism and Consecration will have their GCD reduced, which will cause weird stutters in your rotation. These shouldn't be a major concern but its something to note.

Maintain 8% hit, 263 rating. This is your highest priority thing to not go too far over and waste the stat, but also not to go more than 1-3 hit under cap.

Avoid Armor Penetration: well over half of your damage is holy damage, which completely ignores armor. This is the only stat to avoid

Along this line, expertise is not nearly as valuable for ret in wotlk, 35-45% of your damage (depending on fight / glyphs) will avoid the dodge roll. Expertise, especially in P2, is just not as valuable.

Acquire Item level with a focus on sockets. All other stats are "Decent" with strength being obviously the best, hence the sockets. However agi leather gear often times outperforms the strength plate gear as item budgets for a stat become more expensive as you have more of a stat. Leather gear often times have an extra stat to spread the item budget across, making it have more effective stats on it than the plate gear. You shouldn't focus on one or the other, when in doubt run things through wowsims to verify, but in general an item level upgrade that doesn't have armp and doesn't throw off your hit rating is an overall upgrade.

A setup that does NOT include 252 items. This is a list for those who will be gradually making their way through hard modes and will include 25man normal loot, as well as 10man normal and hard mode loot.

Jewelcrafting is BIS for you. This will give you a bonus of 54 to what ever stats you gem, where as blacksmithing will give you only 32. With this you will want to make sure you are always running 3 Dragon's Eye gems. These can be purchased with your Dalaran Jewelcrafter's Token. Ideally these should all be Bold Dragon's Eye.

Never be afraid to gem for hit. Rigid Dragon's Eye will provide about 1% hit, Rigid Autumn's Glow provides about .45% hit, and Etched Monarch Topaz will provide ~.24% hit. These are great ways to make up for a few points missing in a great gear setup otherwise.

Because you want to be running Relentless Earthsiege Diamond, you will only ever need one blue gem, which you should supply by using a single Nightmare Tear. This gem provides more strength than a Sovereign Twilight Opal and provides agility on top of it. Use this to fill the highest strength blue socket you have available. If none is available, look for an attackpower socket next.

Almost all other gems will be Bold Scarlet Ruby. The only time you should deviate from this after hit cap is if you can get a yellow socket with 4 strength per yellow socket bonus. If thats the case you can fill it with Inscribed Monarch Topaz.

These BIS lists may be doing a disservice to some players by not listing a more complete ranking list for items in each slot. People who are simply trusting the list as opposed to absorbing the math behind what makes an item better than another may not recognize upgrades that are worth taking given their specific circumstances. Ret paladin more than DK or Warrior is best benefited seeking overall ilvl for each slot as a basic rule.

For example, the second best helmet in phase 2 for Retribution isn't the leather helm off mimiron 10, but the mail helmet off Algalon, which is not in any way mentioned in the guide. Loot drops are random, raid compositions vary greatly, and its entirely plausible for a ret paladin to have access to gear of 25 algalon before Thorim bothers to drop enough Warhelms to satiate the mob of DKs you have around you.

I don't think it makes sense to treat a "bis list" so literally that the only items listed are bis for their category (absolute bis, bis non heroic, bis 2 piece, bis 10 only, etc) The point of a bis list is to max your dps. max dps also means maximizing your dps on each raid lockout on your way to phase bis. it doesnt do anyone any good to let an upgrade rot due to it not being the best thing possible, and to do so simply because the upgrades in front of you aren't even mentioned in guides is particularly irritating.

All that to say, the dps difference between boundles gaze and warhelm is less than 30.

Rating Requirement for Deadly Gladiator's Libram of Fortitude has been removed. It now cost 3990 Honor Points from Zom Becom. Also useful note is old librams is now level capped. Like Libram of Divine Judgement.

Why are so many items listed to drop from a different boss or even a different raid-size than where they actually drop? Why is the +10 stats gem still listed in explanations even though it's clearly not in the game? Like why would you make a guide if you dont even wanna proofread it like once? It would take like 10 minutes to go through this and fix these glaring issues, that !@#$ over anybody that relies on this information when making gearing decisions for raids.
How do you even put "Steelbreaker - hard mode" without scratching your head and rethinking what you are doing?

So this guide is great but there are many mistakes.. like the non-hardmode BIS setup includes hard modes like the XT sword. There is a neck in the rings section. The Tempered Mercury Greaves say they drop off Mimi 25m when its 10m. Also keep in mind a lot of the leather items were left out of these lists because it probably favors the less contested plate/strength alternatives, which is fine but they exist and are not all bad items if its all you can get.

Can anyone explain why ilvl 252 furious bonecrusher isn’t even on the list ? I mean 1163 top end damage , crit, ap, and 2 sockets.. genuinely curious if I’m missing something.. I can’t see it being worse than most of those weapons
