As of the PTR on this date, the letter you recieve when you reach 150 pets is from Breanni, and says:

"Hello!

Wow, you're becoming quite the collector of cute critters, aren't you?

I thought I'd write a small note and send a small gift to encourage your efforts. Keep it up!

--Breanni"

(Note this is the same letter that you get with the 125 pet reward, the Brilliant Kaliri, so it's likely both are place holders.)

The pet modeled on the Spirit of Competition pet from the Summer of Competition event (a short term, apparently one-time event held during the real-life Beijing Olympic games in 2008). The pet's motif is that of the Celestials, much like raid boss Agalon and the Blizzard Store mount, the Celestial Steed.

The pet is very active - it wiggles behind you, and zips around in triangular shapes. It has an on-click growl similar to a hunter's pet being fed. This might be a place holder.

Overall a very fitting reward for such a hard achievement.

Not including: Core Hound Pup, Pandaren Monk, ~~Blue Clockwork Rocket Bot~~, Onyxia Whelping, Purple Puffer, Spirit of Competition, Vampric Battling, Warbot.

That leaves me with 150 pets even. Now, with new Dark Moon Fair pets, and the new Winter Viel present that can give you old pets( Blue and Original Clockwork Bots) and one new pet, this is possible.

My contribute on adding pets:

Missing the two versions of ballon pets,部落氣球 / 聯盟氣球 from the quest 風吹走了

Also, from what I could see, you hit 2 bumps in the road by listing the, as wowhead would had put it, "Taught by", and not the actual pet. Which resolve in :

Would it be correct to count both the 小啾啾的小窩 under quests, and the
小啾啾蛙卵 under other world events, when they reward the very same pet.
You cant obtain 2x Shimmering Wyrmling through out Argent Tournament, one is from the 奇特神秘背袋, but they both teaches the very same spell 幻光幼龍鰻

This was summary of what is possible without RL-Money previous to MoP. Now, it is pretty useless. But heck, I won't just delete it :)

It is very well possible to get that Achievement without investing a cent, but it's not going to be easy.
Technically, you can obtain a maximum of 171 pets purely by ingame means (172 including the core hound which I highly recommend ;) ).

But there's a but. A few of them aren't obtaineable anymore: 暴雪熊寶寶, 未孵化的冰冰先生, 奧妮克希亞寶寶, 黃金勳章, 小吸血蝙蝠
Not included are all sorts of regional pets (correct me if I'm wrong please ^^), they aren't included in my assumed maximum either.

So if you start collecting today, without spending any money, that leaves you with a maximum of 166 (167 if you add the core hound, which I... well you know it ^^). But there's another but... You may need to collect children's week pets, which takes up to 4 years if you need all of them. You'll most likely need some, if not all, of the other seasonal world event pets as well, which takes up to one year. So be prepared for a long, long journey. Arriving to the point when of all pets, only those are missing, takes tons of dedication and luck anyways. A lot of new pets came with the DMF in 4.3, and another two lanterns were introduced with the Lunar festival.

The new companions & mount tab on the official armory pages (US / EU) are amazing to keep track of this.
I recently hit #151 and I was able to use the page to track down the last 5 fairly easily.
Just set the filters right + use wowhead and you are all set for the hunt!

P.s.: I know there are sites where you can enter the pets you have and it does the same thing, but i prefer the armory because it's basicly already set up.

If you only started the game in Cataclysm, it is impossible to get this achievement as of now, but REJOICE!

When patch 4.3 hits you can finally get this kick-ass achievement without spending a cent on the Blizzard store! That said however, this achievement won't be easy still even with the new pets.

Available pets as of 5.1.0 (wild battle pets are not included). Total amount in post: 208.

As for the wild Battle Pets:

Work your way down from Silvermoon to STV and battle every type of pets in the different zones.
Make sure to level up your pets during the progress!
Do the same in Durotar, then Outland, Northrend, Cataklysm zones, and finally capture the pets of Pandaria.
In the end you'll have more achievements than this, such as 世界寵物對戰贏家 and 大城市寵物車輪戰高手.

This achievement is currently not in the MoP beta. The pet reward is though. This is likely going to be moved to the account-wide achievements that Blizz keeps saying is coming. At this point, in the MoP beta, the pets have a new screen that all characters on an account can access.

As of the current (15-Apr-2012) Mists of Pandaria Beta Build (15589) The following Pet Achievements have been remove from the General Tab:

Lil' Game Hunter which awards Little Fawn (Little Fawn's Salt Lick)

Menagerie which awards Brilliant Kaliri (Brilliant Kaliri)
Littlest Pet Shop which awards Celestial Dragon (Celestial Dragon)

That leaves the future of obtaining these pets associated with the achievements uncertain. There is a section in the achievement screen for "Pet Battles" but it's too soon to tell exactly what will happen. If you are close to finishing one of the achievements and getting one of the 5 pets, may be worth trying to finish just in case!

I noticed in the beta all the pet achievements was removed. Can anyone tell me if this is just a bug or if we're just getting the pets when we reach that certain number? I would like a answer here please. =/

checked today, the achievement is back, with the reward pet and comes with 300 and 400 pet catchinc achievements (no rewards for now)

But Beware, they may be changing the dragon reward to the 400 achievement in the final version

Got this achievement today. Note that with the new pet tab/organization system, you won't receive the celestial dragon in the mail, it will be automatically activated as soon as the achievement goal is completed.

I just earned this earlier today. Had to relog to get the Celestial dragon in my pet journal. I looked at the new achievement Going to need more leashes and it said my progress was 0/250 instead of 151 I was expecting. Anyone else have this problem?

This achievement was made substantially easier to get with Mists of Pandaria pet battles. Many trivial critters such as sheep or squirrels now count as unique pets that count towards the achievement. You can easily get 25 captured pets by level 8 or so.

This achievement chain is going to 600 unique pets, and you are rewarded through the achievements with 8 pets.

The achievement are:
