The summoning crystal is a giant purple crystal just SW of the small purple crystal on the altar, north of the gate's ramparts.

If you can't find it, you might be bugged like I was. Logging out and back in might fix it.

There is some kind of .. bug actually . The rod wont work if the summoner is dead (it start casting and stop immediatly). I just sheeped summoner, kill minion, use rod, and kill summoner ...

bug reported above has been hotfixed, however if you double click the rod or move before the channel is finished you will lose the dark matter from the VW kill.

There's a lot of potential confusion on this quest. Here's what you do:

Get 5 dark matters of the voids. The voids can be found with their summoner at the plateau above the summoning stone.
With 5 dark matters move to the stone, click it, and watch your void run off.
You can actually attack the void, but quest is completed at it's appearance.

As a daily you should also pair this up with Retest Now, so remember to buff up with .

Just a note for druids, still appears to be bugged if you use the quest item whilst in cat form (Changing to caster form once bugging in cat will not help and you'll need to goto a new mob). Just make sure you use the quest item in caster form and you should be fine.

This quest is named after a term in Quality Assurance, to refer to the current status of a submitted bug. The giver of this quest offers quite a few of them.

More specifically:

Not a Bug (dev declares the issue is intended functionality)
Cannot Reproduce (tester is unable to reproduce the bug after a new build is tested)
Need More Info (information submitted by tester is insufficient. dev needs more information about the problem)

Quest is still bugged.

Summoner needs to be alive to gather dark matter from minion. So what you need to do is dismiss your pets, kill minion, wait for shadowbolt to hit you then gather essence before next shadowbolt hit you, then kill summoner.

I found that the rod doesnt work after you have looted the slaves. whether the summoner is dead or not had no bearing on it for me. if its not working for you try not looting before you use the rod.

This quest's name is quite ironic. It's very bugged.

You can use the Rod of Siphoning on any dead Enslaved Minion; It doesn't matter if it was tapped or not. (This isn't considered a bug, it's just general information.)

The dark matter is NOT a 100% drop/siphon rate! Even if you just killed the Minion, you won't get the matter if you get to work right away. Nothing can guarantee that you WILL get one, but here are two things that will guarantee that that you WON'T:

Taking damage while siphoning - It'll interrupt the channeling effect.
Moving while siphoning - Again, another interrupt.

Interrupting the channeling effect flags the Minion as having been siphoned, so you will not be able to get dark matter from these corpses. This is what I consider a bug.

There is no pattern to finding a Minion that has dark matter. You can siphon it from the corpse while the summoner is alive, you can siphon it from the corpse after their dead. The order in which you kill the minion and summoner does not matter. It doesn't matter if you're in combat, or if you banished the minion, or if what-have-you. Every minion has dark matter. If your siphon isn't working, you either moved, took damage, or someone already siphoned it; It is possible that your siphon just won't work on occasion, most likely attributed to server lag.

This quest is not worth the amount of gold rewarded (at level 80). Do it for the item reward and the quest progress, but stay away from the daily version.

Agreed. Bad enough that some of the item drops in this expansion pack are ridiculously low for Daily Quests. But the essence of these damn minions is a low drop as well. I killed 19 of these bastards before I got my 5 essences. Stay away from this one unless you just love frustrating drops. Horrible quest Blizz >=(

please note the summoning crystal is at 53, 33, or the platform -below- the one with the voidwalkers...took me a while to find it because I was looking on the same platform where you have to gather the dark matter

This is how we shammies do...

Once I learned that the quest was indeed bugged for me, I had to devise a work-a-round strategy. I couldn't simply whoop both the Minion and the Summoner, for then the Siphoning Rod wouldn't siphon the dark matter from the Minion.

Had to kill the Minion first, loot him immediately, and then somehow siphon out the Dark Matter without being interrupted by a shadow bolt from the Summoner. So...

I whooped a Minion, looted him, and dropped a Grounding Totem. It took the first bolt while I was siphoning, and I received the Dark Matter before being hit by the next shadow bolt. Then I whooped the Summoner. Wewt it WORKED....once.

Not sure if it was too close to the Grounding Totem on the next attempts, but after I whooped the Minion, looted him, dropped the totem, and began to Siphon, when the totem took the first shadow bolt, it somehow interrupted the siphoning process. I had to whoop that Summoner without getting to his Minion's Dark Matter.

My next strategy then was called 'Wewt Stoneclaw'. After whooping the minion and looting him, I'd run up to the Summoner and drop a Stoneclaw Totem. While his mind was somehow tricked into thinking he had to kill the totem first before killing me, I siphoned the Dark Matter from the Minion's corpse. Sometimes I would even heal myself before heading back to whoop the Summoner.

Please note: The Stoneclaw totem causes Summoners to run all crazy-like in various directions in search of an acceptable range to cast shadow bolts from. This can sometimes also aggro Taskmasters, and even additional Summoners/Minions. In those cases, I had to whoop them with the aid of my Ghost Wolves, and wasn't able to acquire the additional Dark Matter.

To make matters worse, the above situation took place just after acquiring my fifth Dark Matter, and since my satellite internet connection rocks (pst me for the company's name), my connection timed out and I was left in dead stance with ghost wolves, facing 3 mobs. Cannot wait to whoop some more with my Ghost Wolves when I log back in to finish quest.

I was so confused with this quest, but i've finally figured it out. The voidwalkers that you're suppose to use your Rod of Siphoning on is on the platform right next to the summoning crystal in Icecrown (53, 33). And be careful not to aggro more than one summoner and void pair in one time, because when there are dead voidwalker bodies too close to one another, the one cancels the other out. And be careful not to land the summoner's body on top of voidwalker's dead body, or else you wouldn't be able to channel. Once you've acquired 5 Dark Matters from these voidwalker bodies, all you have to do is channel the big crystal in (53, 33) =D I hope this helps you!

For druids. Not sure which parts of this are necessary, however below is what worked for me. At first I tried to use item in bear and got bugged out (item no longer worked on any minions), logging out then back in fixed this.

1. Go to about 54, 28 where there are lots of Void Summoners with Enslaved Minion pets.
2. Tag exactly one Void Summoner/Enslaved Minion pair.
3. Kill Summoner first, then minion.
4. Go to caster form.
5. Use item on Minion.

For those of you having trouble with this let me explain how to do it right.

Firstly Kill the void and the summoner in whatever order you wish. I kill the void because its a demon and my pally spells kill it quicker. Once both are dead and all adds are clear, click on the corpse of the void if you don't click it you won't get the item. Use the rot it will channel a spell then you can move on. Do this five times and you're ready to summon the messenger. However you will notice that this even doesn't always work and sometimes around 3:1 it will fail to even channel.

I had no trouble with this quest on my DK. I accidentally pulled two pairs and killed them both, walked over the corpses, targeted them, and used the rod on one at a time. I stood still for it to channel, and got a Dark Matter. No problems.

Another thing that will bug this out is if you have a companioin pet out. Put your companion pet away or you wont be able to use the rod successfully on the voidwalker

I'm pretty sure this quest (except for the title, of course) is a reference to Final Fantasy IX and here's why:
Dark Matter was a cool item in FFIX which dealt max damage to a target.
Kuja, the game's most important villain (and part of the final boss fight) was named The Dark Messenger.
Finally, the crystal was the most important thing the whole universe revolved around, it was the essence of life.
And so we basically have to take the Dark Matter to a Crystal and summon The Dark Messenger. Doubt it's just a coincidence really and I'm actually surprised no one else has pointed this out :P.

for those trying to do this quest go to 54, 30 which the Aldur' that: The Desolation Gate. kill void summoners and enslaved minions. loot them to get 5 Dark Matters. once you have 5 Dark Matters go to Summoning Stone (has pile of skulls under it) and click the stone to complete quest.

Description

Alright, <friend/missy>, time to plant a bug.

Relax, it's not a bug exactly, but it'll serve our purposes.

In the northern portion of Aldur'thar, the cult's void summoners enslave demonic minions. Use this rod to siphon the dark matter from the corpses of these enslaved minions, and then use the cultists' summoning crystal to bring our little spy into being.

Until it is discovered, the messenger will serve as our eyes and ears, discreetly observing the actions of our enemy.
