This doesn't work very well in PvP in the way that you may be thinking. It will never fool a player who has seen it used before into actually thinking you're dead. When a hostile player mouses over you, they still see the sword icon, and not the hand icon they would see if you were actually dead.

However, it will make whoever was casting against you lose their target, and stop their cast. It will also (so long as it doesn't get resisted) get Hunter and Warlock pets off your back.

whats the chance of npc's and actual players resisting it and not resisting it?

cause since u have a talent proc that gives u a 4% chance not to resist it and then u hav t4 with a 5% chance (with the set number required) of also not resisting.
so there has to be a procentage of people resisting it and not resisting it.
my guess is a 50-50% chance, but i dont know though thats y im asking.

Feign Death is a very usefull spell.Here are some of its uses:
1)To get aggro of you(especially usefull in instances if you get aggro from the tank)
2)Using Feign Death stops the enemy from spelcasting,something that is very usefull in PvP along with the rest of the Silence/Interrupt hunter mechanics
3)Using Feign Death will also make pets who attack you turn back,as they are considered NPC's and not players(some stupid players may also fall to this,since it turns their attack off ,especially if you do it when you have low hp-however the pet will still stay there ><)
4)Here is another not so known use of FD:with patch 2.1 your pet dissapears when you mount.So what you can do when get dazed is feign death,let the pet take the aggro and then mount again and continue.

Yes, using this in PvP it causes anyone who has you targeted to untarget you. Of course, in almost all cases this is used in a BG, they will know you didn't really die, but them losing you as a target helps a lot in getting that split second jump on the enemy.
Also, if a caster is about to hit you with a timed cast, it will cancel their spellcasting when they lose the target.

Allthough i notice in PvE situations this resists a lot more when you're close to death....

EDIT: Feign Death was changed, and is no longer an aggro drop in PvP aside from losing the aggro of Non-player characters. (example would be Pets, elemental totems, etc...) so if you FD, the apposing player will no longer lose you as their target. Kinda made it pointless if you ask me....

I have my general chat-window and my combat log separated so I can see both at the same time.
So if my target dies I´ll see it directly.

I love using this in Alterac in the midst of a mob. 9/10 feigning will cause the person targeting you to let you go. Unless they REALLY hate you. Even if they know you feigned death in the middle of an all out brawl they won't waste their time trying to retab you.

Alternatively, rather than using it to get away defensively you can use it offensively.

Feign + Aim Shot

It works wonders. Especially when you're about to get a pyro blast or an enemy hunter's aim shot in the face. It drops their target and by the time they retarget usually you have most of your aim shot off. A great way to clear damage to avoid interruption via damage.

EDIT: For Cataclysm. Although you can replace aim shot with your specs heavy hitting shot.

If used correctly, this is invaluable for attacking. It forces every enemy targetting you to untarget you as well as interrupting their spellcasting. In duels, FD + Snake Trap gives you a big advantage as you shoot away while your enemy tab targets half your snakes and your pet before retargetting you.

I love this. Its not the best in pvp but it works on hunters and warlocks. If they send there pet on you do this and start attacking immeadly then it will buy you a few seconds. and if you lost your pet and need to get out of a place with low helth use this and it will recover slowly.

I hate it... against casters ( i am warlock... ).... it is a " way of interrupts" while i am casting fear / Soul fire... at the last secs th ehunter use it... and i cannot finish my casting because i wont target him ( just if i click once more >< )

Immune-ffect
your aggro stay still but the mobs ignore you while the effect is on.
When its gone, they will attack you again (if you are still on top threat).

I'm guessing this would be nice to use when you see a damn rogue stealing a chest while you're still clearing the mobs. Just FD and /lol as the mob(s) go after the rogue.

Just a fun little fact:

Cast Feign Death while swimming/diving, and your character will make the dying animation as if they died in the water instead of land...

I find it quite useful against bad players in battlegrounds and also, if you are getting boosted and a ton of mobs go onto you, Feign Death can get rid of all the agro and put the booster in the argo.

Personally I use it a lot.

the most annoying thing in the world to a caster T_T. I'm about to cast a big starfire trinketed and near the end of the cast, he feigns death, and my starfire is INTERRUPTED!. (and my trinket CD was a waste /cry). So be aware of that my fellow casters. It can be a matter of life and death...

BTW my boomkin after that got aimed shot (with the 50% healing debuff so healing was a waste IMO) and a rogue stun-locked me and pwned me... D:

This is a fun macro I decided to make.

/me drops his weapon, goes rigid, and keels over dead.
/cast Feign Death
/script PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\Sartharion\\CA_Sartharion_Death01.wav")

The last script is Sartharion (OS) dying ("Such is the price of failure"). You can replace that with any boss death quote.

Of course, nobody else can hear it, but it's just something fun to do if you get bored while levelling.

Also, damage does not break the effect. So if an enemy dot'ted you up and then went to kill another target, you could possible fool them into thinking you were dead by feigning, then catch them offguard when the fight is almost over. Or if you're lucky and they're really dumb, they'll just leave you there living.

If you're in Outland or Northrend and you find yourself in a sticky situation, there's a neat little trick you can do to escape. Simply put your pet on passive and feign death. You're pet is still getting attacked, but you yourself are removed from combat. All you have to do is mount up and presto! The mobs reset when your pet despawns, and you're out of combat and free to fly away. Note that this obviously won't work against players, but it's a convenient way to escape any hostile NPCs.

So, the other day I got into a really good AV match against some horde that I'm guessing where mainly AFKers/botters. As I was coming around the corner, I noticed a LARGE group of horde (25-30) of them making their way up my path. I had no where to go, and if I jumped-- I'd be dead. So, I dismissed my pet, hopped beside a rock and used Feign Death. Those 25-30 horde ran right past me, one or two slowing down before hurrying along. It's still pretty nice in PvP, I think.

You can use feign death as a trap for unsuspecting players by setting your pet to prowl (stealth) and feigning death. This is a great tactic in Warsong Gulch and Twin Peaks. Although more experienced PvPers will know better, I'm sure you'll get away with it at least a couple of times a match.

An important thing to note, the cooldown on Feign Death does NOT begin until you've canceled the effect (i.e., stood up). You CAN'T feign death, wait 30 seconds, run, and then immediately feign death again. Keep this in mind when you decide where and when to feign. If you feign in the middle of a bunch of mobs then you're stuck there. Of course, you could wait for trap/deterrence/scatter shot/disengage cooldowns to help you escape that predicament.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. I don't know if this is accurate as of today, but in the past, if you remained in feign death for the whole 6 minutes, you would actually remain dead after the effect.

In PVP, don't forget to use a just before casting Feign Death.
Your opponent will lost several seconds if he tries to ALT-select you.

I know I know many old-timers know this but

You had to be out of combat to place traps so just to place your freezing trap you had to feign death THEN place it, you couldn't just place it while in mid-combat on that mob's path, you had to feign, then quickly place it and resume your rotation

blizzard changed that of course sometime later so now traps can be placed while in combat
In fact in dumbing down also known as the Burning crusade

I have started pvping again a couple of days ago and i have noticed that Feign death doesn't stop Player's pets attacking you, can someone confirm this? It stops Snake Trap's Snakes though

Put this in a macro, attached to a commonly used spell, like Cobra Shot (this only works for Beast Mastery hunters):

/target Hati
/cast ; Wake Up
/targetlasttarget
/cast Cobra Shot
/startattack

It will cast Wake Up, only when your pet is playing dead, so it wont use up the cooldown on every cast.

You can also try the addon 'Growler'. It has a lot of pet handling functionality like Play Dead / Wake Up, Growl autocast off in group, stables browser and a lot more.

I've just levelled out to 120 and have just realized I can use this when my mount won't work and the game is saying I'm still in combat....usually pet related.

Feign death and hop on your mount. Saves you clicking on passive pet or dismiss pet button.

This spell seems to get resisted a lot, like more than 50% of the time, often closer to 80%. It's completely unreliable for me. Am I doing something wrong? Are there any special tricks to using it? Do I have to make my pet Play Dead first or something?

Any hunters out there also wondering why Feign Death no longer works the way it used to? Like it now cancels after everyone else in the group has died, drawing aggro to you and getting you killed, whereas in the past, you could use it to survive a group wipe. Is it a bug or is it intentional?

Huh, I never noticed that apparently when you use Feign Death, any companions/quest buddies you have accompanying you will also Feign Death! I was questing in Korthia, used Feign Death, and all of a sudden there's 6 bodies littering the ground: myself, my two pets, 塔尔-加兰, 防御侍神者, and 骨匠海尔米尔.
Though I suppose now that I think about it, that would make sense that they would also Feign Death... I think any adventurer would be kind of pissed if they tried to get out of a near-death situation by Feigning Death, and then mobs just continued attacking because their quest buddies just... stood there. :P
