This is a 20% haste increase, not a 20% increase in casting time.

It actually boils down to a 16.66% faster cast speed.

The tooltip will be updated in a future patch.

I know a lot of mages have been complaining that icy veins is not particularly useful, but, i've found that the 16.66% faster cast time is really nice. And increasing the amount that it freezes the enemy is a flat dps increase, epically if your specced into shatter and ice shards.

I would estimate its a 14-15% dps increase for mages while activated (assuming that you have the ice shards, shatter, and frost bite talents. )

Some handy things to know...

- Stacks with blood lust
~~- freezing effect will proc off the chilling effect of improved blizzard~~ No longer applies due to the changes in IV
~~- the freezing effect will not proc if you do not have any points into frost bite.~~ No longer applies due to the changes in IV

~~There needs to be some testing into if it will increase the casting time of channeled spells~~ Yes it will.

imao , it is a pretty nice dps boost for frost mages in pve. just a nice combination with the eye of quigmirran+ icon of the silver crescent (two easily achievable trinkets) ur frostbolts have under 2 seconds casting time (dont mention bloodlus/heroism)

The freezing effect is all but useless in a raid environment for pve due to the mob getting constantly hit by 15 other people, but the increased haste is useful.

For the shatter PvP build, the freezing effect adds a substantial amount of shatter possibilities.

All in all, this is one of the few talents that gives a great benefit to both the PvE and PvP frost mage.

Note that IV does not just work with frost spells, but with every spell you cast.
So you can get off a short poly or scorch too, which might be very handy for pvp situations.

Its not a bad talent but I still recommend clear casting for leveling builds for firemages since I think you would get more out of it. This great though for pvp/raiding builds.

It DOES work with channeled spells, reduced Blizzard rank 2 from a 8 second cast to a 6. If it still calculates the ammount of damage for an 8s blizzard or a 6s one i dont know.

I could imagine that this talent will be nerfed in the future for this sole reason, i still hope that it doesnt get nerfed though, anyway, here goes:

Troll racial = 30% Less casting time
Icy Veins = 20% Less casting time (works for all moves)
Bloodlust = 30% Less casting time

This boils down to 80% less casting time if they're all stackable, which in turn provides a 1.2 second pyroblast, not counting any other spell haste items you currently have.

Since water ele's benefit off the same trinket buffs and Icy Veins, this is especially useful! Once again for both PvP and PvE.

As a Fire Mage with Icy Veins, you can create a macro which activates several cooldowns and short-term consumables with one click, something along the lines of:

#showtooltip Icy Veins
/stopcasting
/use Destruction Potion
/stopcasting
/use Flame Cap
/stopcasting
/use Hex Shrunken Head (or any damage trinket you use)
/cast Combustion
/stopcasting
/cast Icy Veins
/stopcasting
/cast Fireball

This will give you 20 seconds of extreme damage, but it does come with the drawback of locking out your mana gems and mana potions. Therefore, it is only advisable that you use this macro if you have a Shadow Priest at hand to provide mana regen or if mana is not an issue. As a final note, you might want to ensure that Scorch has been reapplied right before you use this macro, and that there is no foreseeable situation which will silence you or otherwise stop your casting in the next few seconds.

Very useful spell. Just pop Icy Veins if your Ice Barrier is on CD when you're drastically low on health/mana and evocate. If you use Glyph of Evocation it works wonders - a 6.4 second, uninterruptible 60% heal in tight situations. Gotta love the ice.

Also received a new casting animation as of 3.0.1.

If you wanna be a retard pull a bunch of mobs use IV and blizz urself. This can be used to AOE grind non CCable mobs the only problem is that you will usually die to those said mobs unless you have a ton of health or a healer.Also you can use this if you wanna AOE grind mobs that use ranged abilities that would otherwise have a nasty pushback making you run oom and die.Thats right this spell means no pushback for blizzard!

After starting to play my mage alt actively endgame I must note some subtleties regarding macroing IV in relation to other Frost cooldowns (Mirror Image and Alter Time), as I initially recommended to macro this to Mirror Image.

In 5.4 mages glyph IV, because the glyphed will circumvent haste cap problems during Time Warp. Glyphed, macroing IV to Mirror Image is baseline bad. Images do not benefit from a glyphed IV at all, and it basically wastes one GCD used for a FFB, Ice Lance or Frostbolt. Macroing IV to any of these is not recommended either, because you don't know beforehand which procs you have when activating IV. Tl;dr, macroing IV to a GCD spending spell is not recommended. Mirror Image should be cast seperately (preferably before IV, so you don't keep it 26 seconds long off cooldown).

There is however a recommended way to macro IV to Alter Time: Taraezor covers everything you need to know and I will not repeat that here.
