Once you upgrade your Fishing Shack to level three, you will be able to go on a quest chain to obtain Nat Pagle as a follower.

Then, after he is in your garrison, you catch one of each of the Lunkers (bigger than enormous fish) in each zone each day, which will net you seven of these coins per day.

After eight days of doing the dailies every day, buy a tiny shark pokemon for fifty of these coins. I believe this one, and Spawn of G'Nathus, are the only fish without annoying bubbles around them.

Fishing Lunarfall Carp/Frostdeep Minnow to summon the Lunarfall Cavedweller/Frostdeep Cavedweller

Edit: Based on the comment replies below it seems that lunkers are the way to go.

Edit2: Now, with patch 6.1 it seems that the catch-rate of lunkers has been increased significantly. Fishing up 5 of a kind took me less than 30 minutes just now.

Edit3: With Patch 7.0.3 (Legion Pre-Patch), people have started to form 40-man fishing raids in their garrisons for the Riding Turtle and Sea Turtle that can drop from the Cavedwellers. The spawned Lunarfall Cavedweller/Frostdeep Cavedweller drop personal loot for everyone. A nice side-effect of this is lots of Nat's Lucky Coins. Most groups require that you link Draenor Angler as proof that you have a Fishing Shack Level 3 which is required to catch Lunarfall Carp/Frostdeep Minnow.

Nat's Lucky Coins are currently implemented as a Soulbound item that takes up space in your bags. Their only purpose in-game is to function as a Currency used to purchase items sold by Nat Pagle. So you'll be forced to sacrifice a bag slot for quite a long time, while you fish up hundreds of Lunkers to trade in for one (1) Nat's Lucky Coin each, in order to buy all of Nat's fishing wares.

Please, everyone, submit a support ticket reporting this as an interface-design problem. There is a Currency tab on the character profile screen that should be used for all Currencies. For example, there are several Currencies in the Warlords of Draenor expansion that correctly use the Currency tab for storage instead of taking up bag space. Blizzard simply needs to correct this oversight and and code Nat's Lucky Coins as a Currency instead of a Soulbound item. All Currencies on the Currency tab are effectively Soulbound anyway. Thanks for taking the time to submit a ticket today!

Not quite sure why Blizzard would make this so difficult. People that are collectors have a life too and mine does not include fishing till the 12th of never. I feel it needs to be adjusted and I did make a suggestion. However, I am going to the forums too. People are up in arms about it and with our voices they may listen.

Its a shame that it is almost the same items as rep farming needed for MOP. Should have been a different color mount, hat etc.. hell why not a whole out fit. or have enchants you can get for pvp gear only.

The drop rate for lunkers is now decided by skill level. I was able to get 50 coins from lunkers at a 3.5% drop rate in 6.1 with a 930 skill level. This is up from the 1.3% in the prior patch when I got 100 coins from lunkers.

So I spent all weekend fishing to get the 200 lunkers I needed for the mount and both pets.

It *seems* that pools have a significantly higher lunker rate than fishing outside of pools. After I figured this out, I fished up the coast from Pinchwhistle Gearworks to Shadowmoon Valley where there are unlimited pools (even if they are a bit scattered.) Often times I got my 5 Sea Scorpion Lunker before my hearth was up.

If you don't have your Ephemeral Fishing Pole and Tentacled Hat, fish up Frostdeep Minnow/Lunarfall Carp in your garrison and kill the Frostdeep Cavedweller/Lunarfall Cavedweller until you get them. It's worth taking the extra time.

I managed to farm up 100 of Nat's Lucky Coins over a few weeks time by fishing in my garrison. Every Day I would take the daily fishing quest, Apply Worm Supreme , then ask Nat for a bait. Using Hightfish Cap or Tentacled Hat along with Dragon Fishing Pole I get my fishing skill up to 1030. I try to fish up at least 5 Lunarfall Carp (that's the maximum amount you can stack). All except one Nat's Lucky Coin which I got from a random lunker I fished up, came from the Lunarfall Cavedweller.

Granted this takes a bit of patience, but it's not so bad being in your garrison and chatting with trade.

7.0.1 Update - There are a few comments floating around about doing 40 man raid groups and fishing for Lunarfall Cavedweller/Frostdeep Cavedweller. Not sure what phrase to look at in group finder, but you will need to ensure you have your level 3 fishing shack still. The boss is personal loot meaning you may have a better time of getting coins this way as 40 people fishing for the item it shouldn't take long to get them. This is also a good chance to farm your fishing turtle mounts if you don't already have them as they are in the loot table as well.

With the addition of flying in 6.2.2, Fishing in pools is more efficient than fishing in open water. See below for data.

With increased drop rates and inclusion of pools, about 8 hours of fishing should net you your mount! (post quests leading up to catching 100 lunkers)

In scanning the comments across the mount, coins, pools, lunkers, and whatever else I could find I came up with some common facts that I wanted to put in a single post along with my current hypothesis on the fastest way to catch 100+ lunkers.

You can catch lunkers anywhere there is fishable water except your Garrison. This includes Tanaan Jungle.
All fish are not created equal for lunkers. Thanks to a post in the comments section of the Reins of the Crimson Water Strider we can assume fishing for Enormous Abyssal Gulper Eel appears to have the best lunker rate. Head to 65,21 in Spires of Arak for a nice quiet place to waste your life...
Having bait should not effect your catch rate. However, with a max skill you will always have bait on you, so why not.
The higher your fishing skill, the better the drop rate.
Once you have a level 3 fishing shack, it is a good idea to fish up Frostdeep Minnow for Horde or Lunarfall Carp for Alliance. The drop rate is about 1% and should take you 20-30 minutes to fish up.
Using those items spawns Lunarfall Cavedweller/Frostdeep Cavedweller which has a decent chance to drop fishing items that will greatly enhance your skill such as: Hightfish Cap and Ephemeral Fishing Pole.

Based on a previous comment, a user stated that the drop rate in pools seemed higher for lunkers. They also noted that the pools off the coast of Spires of Arak respawn at a great rate, and come in decent groups. Because of this comment and the addition of flying I decided to test this theory directly.

Hypothesis: With flying, moving from pool to pool makes a more efficient lunker grind than standing in one spot in fishing due to an increased drop rate.

Controls:

A fishing skill of 1045 or greater will be used throughout. If higher or lower, it will be annotated.
Fishing in pools will primarily be conducted on the east coast of Spires of Arak due to the number/respawn rate of pools creating a ideal uptime to fish in pools.
Fishing in 'open waters' will be conducted in Spires of Arak due to the assumed best drop chance of lunkers in this area.

Notes:

This is now complete. If you want specific sessions of fishing (there were about 6) let me know. Total is posted below.
I'm a salty son of a @#$%^, so my ability to get the lure in the pool is undoubtedly better than yours! :)
Time is being measured using Worm Supreme and a sprinkling of common sense.
Time does not stop when mobs are encountered or a lack of pools is found.
There was no competition for pools which could reduce the total number of effective casts into pools.
Addon being used is Fishing Buddy to ensure the lure stays on and to track numbers/percentages generally speaking.

I deleted the individual sessions which displayed the progress for fishing. After 6.5 hours total of fishing (that were used for this post(3 hours in pools and 3 hours in open water)) 100 lunkers have been caught and I have my sweet time sink mount. Might do pets, I dunno.

Bottom line.
Fishing in pools IS a higher drop chance and the increased drop rate beats open water fishing even if you have to move between pools.
6.5 hours = 84 lunkers. Appx 7.5-8 hours = 100.

Totals
Fishing in Pools - Spires of Arak, East Coast:
Total time spent fishing: 205 Minutes
Total casts/items caught: 691
Total Lunkers: 52
Est. Drop Percentage: 7.5%

Fishing in Open Water - Spires of Arak, near 65,21:
Total time spent fishing: 180 Minutes
Total casts/items caught: 797
Total Lunkers: 32
Est. Drop Percentage: 4.0%

*** Some fishing was done outside of the time/cast measurements. That is why 84 is the total and I have my mount.

Current Conclusion (Updated September 19)
I had multiple terrible sessions of RNG when fishing in open water. Fishing in pools was a consistent 5.5-7.5% drop rate for Lunkers. Because of this, once I hit the mid 80's for lunkers, I swapped to just pools and finish inside of an hour (about 35-40 minutes). If someone fishes in only pools off of Spires of Arak I would estimate they would net 100 lunkers in about 6.5 to 7 hours. Fishing in pools is more efficient than fishing in open water.

Adjusted my comment on the Angler page to reflect the 6.1 changes that:

Nat is no longer required working at the Shack to capture Lunkers.
Lunkers can be caught in pools and without a limit of 5.
The rate seems to be higher than in 6.0 (or is at least affected by pools only containing price fish).

I was unaware of these changes, but this makes Lunker farming by far the best way to get the coins. Garrison fishing is still prefered if you also want the chance at the Riding Turtle, though.

Remember, if you want all of Nat's goodies (which most of us do), you don't need 250 coins. Just buy the 2 pets off the AH - that will save you 100 coins right there. And believe me, you'll earn the gold back a lot faster than the time you would have spent fishing for those extra 100 Lunkers. So, 100 coins for the mount, and just 50 more for the hat and fishing pole.

Just thought I would mention this as reading through I cant see it mentioned.

When farming for your Nat's Lucky Coin and deciding on whether to farm from your garrison or open waters just check your rep with Nat Pagle.
Buying items from Nat Pagle requires rep.

Stranger: 0-8400
Pal: 8400-16800
Buddy: 16800-25200
Friend: 25200-33600 - Nat's Drinking Hat Savage Fishing Pole
Good Friend: 33600-42000 - Land Shark Nat's Draenic Fishing Journal
Best Friend: 42000-42999 - Reins of the Crimson Water Strider

If you don't have the required rep to buy the items you need then you need to stick to farming your Nat's Lucky Coin from open water lunkers for now as handing in the lunkers also gives you 350 rep as well as a coin. Farming coins from your garrison gives no rep so you'll be left with the coins you need but not the required rep to buy anything.

So how many lunkers do you need? Not taking into account rep bonuses from Guild Perks or class bonuses:
350 rep per hand in, each tier is 8400 worth of rep so 8400/350 = 24 lunkers require for each level of friendship. So 120 lunkers from stranger to best friend.

If your at best friends or have the rep you need then farming coins from your garrison is probably better as they can drop from the Frostdeep Cavedweller summoned by the Frostdeep Minnow fished up in your garrison and also gives you a chance at the mount and toy etc from them.

You can also go back to MoP and farm rep that way too if lunkers are annoying you.

Hand-in macro for Lunker farmers
If you need to turn in a lot of lunkers, paste this in a macro:
/script SelectGossipAvailableQuest(X)
/script CompleteQuest()
/script GetQuestReward()

Then replace 'X' according to which type of lunker you're handing in:
1 - Fire Ammonite Lunker
2 - Jawless Skulker Lunker
3 - Fat Sleeper Lunker
4 - Black Lake Lunker
5 - Blackwater Whiptail Lunker
6 - Abyssal Gulper Lunker
7 - Sea Scorpion Lunker
8 - Felmouth Frenzy Lunker

It'll work like this:
Right-click Nat Pagle, spam macro 3 times, and you've handed in 1 lunker.
It'll go faster than handing them in manually, and you won't have to download some addon either.

Nat couldn't care less what KIND of lunker you bring him, so the fastest way to farm the coins is sea scorpion lunkers offshore between Arak and Shadowmoon. there are TONS of spawning pools here and you never have to go far for another one.

I found a pretty good spot for Fat Sleeper Lunker fishing on the Elemental Plateau in Nagrand.

Standing on ledge with a waterfall to the right and a lille isle with elementals to the left and a periodic water geyser that inactive looks a lot like a Outlands Pure Water school directly in front.

No agro in this spot.

Currently, you can start a raid group in LFG, if you have the Draenor Angler fishing achievement. Get 40 people in your garrison fishing up Cavedwellers. It is all personal loot. In 1 hour, i looted both turtle mounts, 170+ coins and you will loot more fish than you know what to do with. You can mail it to an alt, the garrison mailbox is within range of the kill area, you can loot any cavedwellers you missed while cleaning out your bags. You will also get all the hats, poles and trinkets you ever wanted.

Ive noticed rep is gained with Nat on handing in a Lunker. I'm guessing (new demon hunter alt) that this counts towards the Pandaria Nat too for buying rep items so we don't need to return to Pandaria to complete the dailies there.

I fished in the garrison for the first 46 coins from the minnow/cavedweller, until I got Riding Turtle (around 1.30-2pm today), then went out to Spires, and fished up and down the coast in Sea Scorpion Schools for the remainder, well up to 82 (4pm) so far, tracking the Lunkers and Coins using the Rarity add-on as it displays them (added together) as attempts at the mount when you get them. of course also using Fishing Buddy for fast casting and luring

Fished for like 10 minnows, got no coins. I guess lunkers are the only way to farm for the coins. Thats rather sad, coz the droprate for lunkers seems to be in a 5-10% ballpark.

After fishing in spires of arak for about 1 hour without getting 1 single lunker, I went to Nagrand around Elemental plateau and got one for about every 10 fat sleeper. 800 fishing with no bait or fishing items

I thought I'd share my experience as of 8.0:

I farmed the coins by fishing in Talador pools by flying in circles around the large body of water. It took me about two afternoons of grind, maybe like 10 hours total. Every once in a while I got really lucky and fished up a lunker about every five casts, but I also had dryspells with over 30casts. On average, I'd say I got a lunker every 15-20 casts.

If your main goal is Nat Pagle reputation and the crimson water strider, I'd definitely recommend fishing pools. The other option, fishing up carps at your garrison to farm the cavedweller is much slower. Then again, the garrison option offers you the chance to get some turtles.

Contrary to popular belief, this isn't the most horrible grind. Yes, it still requires quite some time, but there are definitely much worse grinds and fishing can be really relaxing.

Just my 2c if you're here after 8.0 and saving for your Water Strider.

I've spent around 6 hours doing laps of Hellfire Citadel fishing the pools. I've landed around 600 Felmouth Frenzies and 56 Lunkers, so I'm on approx 9% drop rate. It seems pretty consistent with most of the other comments here.

I have no bait or buffs besides the Underlight Angler.

I just caught 102 lunkers required to get the mount and get to best friend with Nat Pagel (I had some rep from MoP) in 8.0.1. Here's my data:

100 casts in SMV open waters = 0 lunkers
100 casts in SMV schools = 12 Blind Lake Lunkers
100 casts in Talador schools = 7 Blackwater Whiptail Lunkers
973 casts in souther shore of Spires = 83 Sea Scorpion Lunkers

All told (for schools): 1173 casts = 102 lunkers = ~8.7% drop rate

Note for all fishing except in Talador I had max base fishing, plus Dragon fishing pole and Hightfish Cap. In Talador I tested out not using those items. If we exclude those casts, we get:

1073 casts = 95 lunkers = ~8.9% drop rate

P.S. I did this in about 2.5 days of pretty intense grind.

Today (patch 8.1.5), it takes 3 hours to get 50 lunkers from schools. I personally fished in Nagrand (Fat Sleeper), doing laps between Ancestral Grounds and Mok'gol Outpost.

Watching Netflix at the same time passes the time quite well.

Perhaps it's other people doing this in the weeks leading up to Shadowlands, but after deciding to finally finish off the coin grind I have to say I disagree with Spires of Arak pool fishing. It's fine if you want to mix it up, but you'll spend so much time flying around looking for pools I don't think the increased drop rate is worth it. Far better spot in my opinion is the fel river around Hellfire Citadel. The Felmouth Frenzy schools respawn frequently and are generally numerous. The lunker drop rate was roughly 7.5% for me across hundreds of casts, so even if that's less than the reported 10% for Spires pools then I'm ok with that given I spent less time flying.

Lunker fishing in the age of Shadowlands!

Figured I'd fish for a few hours (open water only, no pools) while I recover from a tough dentist visit, and see if the drop rates have gotten better. For the purposes of this brief post, I differentiate between Zone fish (in this case, Nagrand's Fat Sleepers), and trash (Crescent Saberfish). Some takeaways from my 3-hour experiment:

1. Using bait means you catch more zone fish than trash. No bait means mostly trash.
2. Using gear to beef up your skill level past Draenor's max means you catch more "enormous" zone fish than trash. Fully decked out, the "enormous" variety of zone fish will be what you catch most, by a large margin.
3. Over the years I can count on one hand the number of times the game did *not* let me fish up more bait before my current bait timed out.

FIRST HOUR:
Buck naked, armed only with the basic Fishing Pole (the first one you can buy when you pick up the skill), Bright Baubles (+3), and bait:

12 lunkers. (Per lure: 3,3,2,1,1,2)

SECOND HOUR:
Decked out with Boots of the Bay (+10), Nat's Drinking Hat (and lure (+18), enchanted gloves (+5), and the ol' Underlight Angler (+15):

9 lunkers (per lure: 2,1,2,4,0,0)

THIRD HOUR:
Buck naked, no lure, no bait, no pole - just that lame insta-pole guys too lazy to equip an actual pole use:

16 lunkers. I kid you not. 16 dang lunkers.

Possible conclusion: You can gear up to maximize for enormous zone fish, or gear down to maximize for lunkers.

Maybe. Gonna have to wait until the next trip to the dentist before I'm willing to sit down for another 3 hours and test the hypothesis.

Some data from 9.1.5 regarding hunting Lunkers!

I chose to work on my grind in Tanaan Jungle, fishing in Felmouth Frenzy pools. I flew in a circle around Hellfire Citadel, fishing in the green fel water; pools would always respawn before I got back to them, so I was able to have non-stop pools. Partway through, I started using the addon Fishing Buddy to keep track of some stats.

After 900 casts with +15 fishing (just my fishing pole, no lure or bait):
671 Felmouth Frenzy, or 74.6% of my casts
153 Felblight, or 17% of my casts
75 Felmouth Frenzy Lunker, or 8.3% of my casts
1 Enormous Crescent Saberfish, or 0.1% of my casts (gotten when a cast was not close enough to a pool)

Additionally, if you are farmining coins specifically for the mount, be aware that if you are starting without any Friendship with Nat, you will need to collect more than 100 lunkers, as you will not reach Best Friends from just 100 turn ins alone! You can get coins from fishing in your Garrison's level 3 fishing shack (via killing the murlocs you get from carps), but that doesn't drop lunkers and therefore does not get you friendship!

To speed things up a little more, select Nat, and then in your Keybinding Menu, bind some key to "Interact With Target". For my case, I bound "F" to interact and placed my macro my action bar number 4, so I just had to press F, 4, 4, 4 (repeat 147 times). Must faster than clicking!

For anyone collecting these coins in 2025, I highly recommend going to a cave in Spires of Arak at the end of the river, at the bottom of a waterfall, around 71,32. There's 5 pools of Abyssal Gulpers there and they spawn on a regular basis.
I also recommend using the macro that someone else posted to hand in the lunkers.

I don't know if anyone is farming these still, but I didn't see any comments that the lunkers are on a daily soft reset.
I have been getting them often on the first or second pool in each zone (sometimes on the first cast) per day.

I was finally looking to get Nat's Drinking Hat so I started farming.
So anyone with patients can get the 8 per day fairly quickly, one per zone.

I can confirm you can catch more than one of each type per day, but the drop rate after the first is severely reduced.

Fishing was 100+30. Less than 30min per day (Mostly Travel).
