The Silver Hand was the weapon of Tyr, a Titan Keeper who helped proto-dragons that would one day become the Dragon Aspects to defeat a gargantuan mutated proto-dragon named Galakrond. In the battle Galakrond tore Tyr's hand off and ate it, and although Tyr had the power to replace it with a fully functioning hand he instead put a closed fist made of silver in its place. This legend of heroic sacrifice was passed on by the vrykul to their human descendants, and the humans named the Knights of the Silver Hand after their ancestral stories of Tyr.

Edit for posterity: The flavor text has changed, so the following is out of date now.
The flavor text is partially a quote of Tyr's from Dawn of the Aspects:

"We never intended this path. Galakrond should never have journeyed in the direction he did, and we did not prevent it. Now...now this young world faces annihilation."

Perhaps it'll sheath across our backs rather on our side?

Edit: Looks like it's now a 2H as of 2/10/2016.

Animations should look just a touch more practical, and we still keep the tome on our belts.

I'd call that a win-win.

As of Legion Alpha Build 20914 The Silver Hand is the size of a small 2H mace (instead of a 2-PERSON mace!) that is still held nearer the head of the weapon. Looks a decent size on races that have a medium to large body:weapon ratio (Fem Humans, Tauren) but seems to have lost its presence on Fem Belfs and Fem Draenei. The Fury artifacts were also scaled (upwards) to better represent their weapon-type (2H)

i found out the hidden buff in The silver hand , empowers you for 30 sec to deal 100% more damage against undead creatures , it might sound strange the expansion is about demons . i believe there are hidden troves that are not announced in the game.

I was so excited to see an actual volumetric book on my waist, but then I put on a belt with volumetric buckle and the result was awful - the book's geometry intersects with almost any belt with a volumetric buckle making it look REALY weird. I wonder if Blizzard haven't checked it at all or just considered it as a "minor" bug that nobody would care about.

If you reset your artifact weapon (the talents/traits) you DONT lose any artifact power except for the artifact power you pay for the reset!

The weapon by itself looks good but I hate it as a weapon for holy paladin. There is the pseudo libram but would so much prefer any kind of one hand + shield :(

Is there any special dialog for this? Like an npc reacting to it or something. I'm actually really interested in seeing all of these for all of the artifacts. I found them very interesting :)

This artifact has two holy relic slots and one life slot. I haven't gotten it yet on my paladin and needed to know so I can make a better choice from the big relics offered at the end of the order hall campaign, based on what relics I have tucked away in the bank. The tooltip above shows only one slot of each.
