You have to have a look at a few things in the room, at the nor-west corner, the pit in the middle, and to the south-east. When you finish it, there's a skeleton near the south point that gives you your next quest, Be Prepared.

They sparkle (fainlty and more so on the floor) You also don't need to complete this quest to find the skeleton.

Make sure you do this quest before any of the others once you get it. If the guy phases out, then you wont be able to turn in the quest.

This mistake was learned from experience.

The "Northern Hieroglyph" is the bird painting behind the lamp on the west wall, just south of the northwest corner.

The "Southern Hieroglyph" is the bird painting behind the lamp on the east wall, just north of the southeast corner.

The problem with this quest is that the marker on the minimap for the southern hieroglyph is wrong. The easier way to do this quest is
1. examine the ancient mechanism first which is rigt in the middle
2. from there face south and fly over there almost to the end, the object is slightly to the right hand side, the co-ordinate is 63,33
3. now turn round to face north and fly to the end of the other side, the object is again slightly to the right, the co-ordinate is 65,25

No matter what you do, do not follow the minimap.

So, to summarize, at this point the quest chain splits in two, and the next quests are Lessons From the Past from the recently expired Schnottz Scout, and Be Prepared from the long expired and not targetable Decrepit Skeleton, both on the southern end of the Chamber of the Stars.

However, there are actually three ways to Be Prepared.

1) If you accept the quest from the Decrepit Skeleton, you start out with a Piece of Rope, and when you walk over a ground skeleton, the Tormented Tomb-Robber that rises up will drop an additional Piece of Rope, of which you need 6.

2) If you have not yet taken the quest, and you walk over a skeleton, the Tormented Tomb-Robber that rises up will drop the seemingly similar but actually different Piece of Rope, which can also begin the quest. When you accept, there is no longer a need to "talk" to the Decrepit Skeleton (you can't even target him), and the quest-giving-rope becomes the normal one...of which you need 6.

I assume (but cannot confirm) that you need to have at least begun The Thrill of Discovery, if not completed it (as I had), for all of this to happen.

3) If, before either of these things happens, you complete Lessons From the Past from the other fork of the quest chain, a third preparedness-being-rope-collection-option opens up. Once you turn in, leave Harrison Jones, and then return he will offer the substantially similar Be Prepared. They're really afraid you'll miss it and won't be able proceed with the chain, or maybe they just really really need rope.

the coordinates for "Southern Hieroglyph" is 63.42, 33.64. The other Hieroglyph's are easily marked.
