These can be caught anywhere in inland waters. The other two might be coatsal water or also inland. Not sure. FOund this and Nat Pagle's comment stated basically that the gouramis are only caught inland.

There are 3 Daily Fish, as the name implies they can only be turned in once daily. It is however possible to catch one of them again after you turned it in, even on the same day. If you already turned it in you will get the message: "You have completed that daily quest today"

Flying Tiger Gourami - Can be cought in open freshwater areas in Krasarang Wilds and Valley of the Four Winds. (Good spot is Dojani River, just north of Anglers Wharf) (Coordinates are 64:28 in Krasaran Wilds)

Mimic Octopus - Can be caught in the salt water areas where you can catch Reef Octopus. (A good spot is Anglers Wharf - Just fish from the boat Nat Pagle is sitting in.) (Coordinates are 68:44 in Krasaran Wilds)

Spinefish Alpha - Can be caught at Inkgill Mere in Kun-Lai Summit. (If you have done the quests you will have waterwalking on while fishing) (Coordinates are 72:87 in Kun-Lai Summit)

All 3 of them can also be caught from schools of fish in the suggested areas.

Be patient even with the increased dropchance, they can still take a while to catch.

All of them gives the following upon turn in:

Fished this up while fishing outside of pools, in the general questarea (just southeast of Thunder Cleft in Krasarang Wilds) for the quest Shocking!. At the time, I had 528 fishing level, and was not using any fishing "buffs" of any kind.

I've found fishing right off the dock is the best spot to find the Mimic Octopus and a small lake in Townlong Steppes around 65, 37 for the Flying Tiger Gourami. I've fished them both quickly in those locations on several occasions where other spots I've had no luck at all.

How to gain Reputation:
Standing with Nat Pagle is gained by catching daily fish. Mimic Octopus and Flying Tiger Gourami have a 1% droprate. Spinefish Alpha on the other-hand has a 2% droprate. Just like real life, Best Friend status takes 84 fish hand-ins. This means it will take between 28 and 84 days depending on how many of the three fish you turn in each day. The daily fish cannot be caught from pools, only open water.

Once you have catch a daily fish you should stop fishing its water until you have delivered it to Nat Pagle. Each daily fish is unique, so you cannot catch another while you have the first in your inventory. You can however move to a new location and catch your next fish before handing all three in. Once a daily fish has been turned in, you may fish it up again, although you will not be able to hand the new fish in until the following day. This allows you to catch three fish hand them in, catch the three fish again so for the following day all you have to do is hand them in. This is useful if you have other things planed or you got lucky with today's catch and had some spare time.

If you have the required "No-Junk" skill you will not catch any of the 13 junk items.

It may take sometime to see each fish, with a 1% drop rate, after fishing 200 fish there is only a 86.6% chance that you will have seen the daily fish. Just be patient and keep fishing. I have personally caught both the Spinefish Alpha and Mimic Octopus on the fist catch. I have also personally spent 5 hours fishing for Spinefish Alpha until I finally got it, I actually started to think it was removed from the area I was in.

This fish has a better chance of being caught in the daytime. After much experimentation, I'm now sure of this. Acid-test it before you downvote me.

I'm also fairly sure that Spinefish Alpha has a better chance to be caught at nighttime, and Mimic Octopus has the best success rate in twilight time.

Okay, I've heard people say you can only catch the rare fish by fishing in pools, and others by saying only by fishing in open water. Can someone please clarify so I know one way or the other or if it doesn't matter? I don't want to waste my time fishing incorrectly.

These can be fished up while in a raid.

I sacrificed my time/sanity for Science! and tried to fish one up while waiting for raid to start tonight. I actually got lucky and caught one rather quickly. You can also accept the quest and turn it in while in raid, so you can basically do this entire quest while in a raid group. But in case you were wondering, you can definitely catch Flying Tiger Gourami and the other 2 Nat rep fish while you're in a raid.

Personally I think Blizzard are being ridiculous with the drop rates for this set of dailies. It's supposed to be a little extra fun, but if you actually add up the hours your life slips away from you. I finder that rather sinister of them myself. Anything to keep us hooked* and paying the subs.

So, purely on the maths...

0.4% drop rate - 1 in 250 per fish.

So, 750 cast a day - 3 cast a minute - about 8 hours a day for a month

Blizzard have put a drop rate for a daily quest for rep for a poxy hat that's a FULL TIME JOB !

OK, often you can get one in the first few casts, the second one, maybe not, the third - especially the mimic - can, as others have mentioned, take several hours...

When you add the lunacy of all the other dailies, especially for rep. it ceases to be fun and has the hallmarks of being designed to entrap certain mindsets.

Anyway, this /qq isn't going to catch me the damned flying gourami, so back to casting...

Not sure if it's a bug or not, but I have caught this item 3 days in a row very quickly while fishing up sugar minnows for the daily cloud serpent quest. I am fishing in the stream near the bridge directly west of the quest giver. All 3 days I have caught this item in less than 5 minutes.

I have 600 fishing and am using a +30 dragon fishing pole and +75 bright baubles.

Whether anything can be concluded from this, I don't know...maybe Blizzard had some sanity and upped the drop rate on these items a little bit.

So as I was fishing for this at the south end of the pool at Krasari Falls and nearing in on 200 casts when I started wondering just how unlucky I was. Came here to find the drop rate and see that apparently no one has caught one there. Fluke? Well, maybe still just unlucky. Using wowhead's drop rate of 0.4% and the simplified version of the binomial probability formula for Bernoulli trials, the chance of catching this fish for a given number of tries is 1 - P(notFFG) ^ #tries. P(notFFG) is the probability of NOT catching the Flying Fish Gourami, or 99.6%. That works out to the following:

I finally gave up at 300 tries at the Krasari Falls pool, so there was still a substantial 30% chance that, if it were catchable there, then I was just somewhat unlucky for failing to catch it. However, over all of the hundreds of thousands of trials that get submitted to wowhead it is telling that none have registered a catch there, and when I moved over to the Dojani River I caught it on my 8th cast.

This suggests that the catch rate of 0.4% for the zone is probably understating the real chance because it is counting catches from locations which will never succeed. El's Extreme Anglin' puts the chance at 1%. That's still pretty poor but improves the time to catch one substantially. The abbreviated table at a 1% chance per catch looks like this:

If you believe the 1% figure, on average it should take you 69 catches. If you're up over 200 catches, you're having a really rotten run of luck.

My 70 Panda (550 fishing skill) caught Flying Tiger Gourami from a Tiger Gourami School at Peak of Serenity, Kun-Lai Summit. She has access to that area when doing her daily. It is no surprise that the game prevents her from accepting the quest as yet because of her level.

I found Pat Nagle in Anglers Wharf at coords 68.4, 43.4. Anglers Wharf is in Krasarang Wilds, which is the most southern zone within Pandaria. Hope this is helpful.

Lots of great comments about when & where folks have caught the fish. Since it is a random catch, it makes sense that peeps have caught it in.. UH! random areas!.. All posts seem to be green so for anyone to say "this can't be caught <here> or <there>" well that's cuz they didnt catch it there!. When I see a BLUE post saying "these fish can only be caught <here> or <there> then it will carry some weight. .til then? I'll stick with knowing they (the FTG, and the other 2 Nat Pagle like for rep) are catchable in Pandalandia period.

While fishing for the rares in order to raise your rep with Nat Pagle, a good habit to get into is trying for the Spinefish Alpha FIRST each day, as you have approximately double the chance of catching it than the other two rare fish -- the Flying Tiger Gourami & Mimic Octopus, which can take an extremely long time to catch.

*Edit to add: as of patch 5.2, the rare fish all have an increased catch-rate and don't take nearly as long to fish up.

This route still works. Its just much much faster now. Instead of an hour, it's more like 15-20 minutes.

So I believe I have found a relatively painless and somewhat profitable way to farm up the three daily fish. Improvement suggestions are welcome. This is just how I've done it for the past three days. It's taken less than an hour to get them all, and I've made some fairly decent money on my server doing it.

1. Go to the lake just north of Grookin Hill in Jade Forest. Lots of Jade Lungfish schools here. Fish those up until you get the Flying Tiger Gourami. Stop fishing freshwater.

2. From there, fly west into the summit and fish the Sha touched waters around Inkgill Mere. Fish in the Spinefish schools until you get Spinefish Alpha. Stop fishing sha touched waters.

3. From there, fly east across Jade Forest until you reach coastal waters. Fish any school of fish you see on the coast while heading south. Sometime before you reach the Anglers location, you should fish up a Mimic Octopus. If you dont get it before you get to the Anglers, just keep going. I've never had to make an entire loop around Pandaria to get it done.

It should probably be noted that I am at 600 fishing and I use the following equipment.

Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole
Glow Worm
Ancient Pandaren Fishing Charm

Today's run of this route got me all three fish in less than an hour. And between vendor trash and items sold on the auction house from sealed crates as well as fish I wasn't going to use, a little over 700 gold.

My Fishing skill is 428. Went to the big pond in The Secret Aerie just north of Grookin Hill in Jade Forest. There were two Tiger Gourami pools there. It only took me about 4 casts to get the Flying Tiger Gourami

You do NOT need a high fishing skill to catch this.

I just caught one on first cast from a Tiger Gaurami school at Peak of Serenity with 21 skill in fishing and no extra from lure or pole. I suppose I could never have caught it in open water with that skill, but as casts in pools always succeed, it is indeed possible to fish for even with the lowest of skills.

The Flying Tiger Gourami and Spinefish Alpha are it seems a higher drop rate from Pools of the same fish. I have been grinding open water until today when I fished a Spinefish school, 1st cast, I dropped the Spinefish Alpha. I went to fish the Mimic Octopus. 50 casts in open water off Anglers Wharf and I got the drop. ( This in my experiance has had the lowest drop rate, somtimes up to 180+ casts ) I went back to Kun-Lai Summit and fished what i thought was a Spinefish School ( I fished near the Flight Master, diddnt realise the pools there were Tiger Gourami Schools ) and on my first cast, dropped the Flying Tiger Gourami. Coincidence ... ?

I think the drop rates are a bit off. I routinely catch the daily fish in less than 50 casts, I'd say. I'm not particularly lucky, either. I farm mount instances forever like everyone else.

Since 5.2 Droprate is 5%.

EDIT: For all of the downvoters: I confirmed this by fishing it every day since 5.2 and on the PTR. The range of fishes was between 1 and 75. Arithmetical mean is 21,8, median is 17. So it's VERY likely to be 5%.

Nat Pagle's Daily Fish for 5.2

Drop chances have been increased dramatically over previous patches varying from the first few casts to several dozen. Skill boosting equipment appears to have a helpful effect.

Mimic Octopus can be caught in any coastal waters where Reef Octopus is present including some channels.

Flying Tiger Gourami can be caught in any body of fresh water that contains Golden Carp. Can also be caught while on The Anglers daily quests and The Order of the Cloud Serpent daily quest.

Spinefish Alpha can only be effectively caught at Inkgill Mere in the southeastern section of Kun-Lai Summit.

All three daily fish quests can be fished again immediately after turning them over to Nat Pagle however can not be turned in until global daily quest reset.

All three can be caught in both schools and open water and in instances.

The rewards for each are:
11 Gold 40 Silver
1 Lesser Charm of Good Fortune
5 Valor Points
350 Reputation with The The Anglers
600 Reputation with Nat Pagle

Reputation can be increased by 10% with either Mr. Popularity guild buff as well as Darkmoon Top Hat.

As of Patch 5.2 and as others have noted fishing up this and the other two rare fish has gotten much easier. I finally got to Best Friend with Nat a week or so ago and have noticed a phenomenon that I put down to Blizzard's sense of irony/gloating. Now that I don't need another Flying Tiger Gourami ever, I fish them up with no effort at all. My first though 4th casts in any inland pool is pretty much guaranteed to pull out the rare fish. Yes, it's 11g 40s and 5 Valor plus a Lesser Charm of Good Fortune but there's also a component of imagining the imp of the Random Number Generator whispering, "Hey! Remember how you spent all that time fishing these up when you needed them? Remember? Here! Have another!" :)

I just fished mine up outside of the Stormstout Brewery in the water to the left of the Instance. I got it on my 14th cast. My fishing skill is 509 and No fishing pole necesarry. There are alot of Brew Frezied Emperor Salmon pools there.

I just picked up fishing skill to cook from level 1. Fished this up in the river next to Halfhill after getting 20 odd carps.

So I followed Synit's instructions as he said. I went to Angler's Wharf in Krasarang Wilds and tried fishing for the Mimic Octopus just outside the Wharf on a rock. I cast the line two times and got nothing, so I started thinking 'Why don't I try fishing from the Reef Octopus Pools for the guild fishing achievement?'. So I went and flew around to find some pools and I didn't find any so I decided that was just a waste of time. So I went back to the Angler's Wharf, stood on the dock of it, cast the lure and got the Mimic Octopus in my first cast.

After that I went to the Dojani River just north of the Wharf for the Flying Tiger Gourami, just like Synit suggested. Doesn't really matter where you are, I got it in my second cast again.
I caught the Flying Tiger Gourami fish once before while fishing for the Golden Carp in a river in the Jade Forest for the Order of the Cloud Serpent daily.

I guess I was lucky at the other 2 fishes because it took a few casts before finally getting the Spinefish Alpha fish. I caught it once before at Inkgill Mere in Kun-Lai Summit when I was fishing for the Brawler's Guild quest item. There were a lot of pools up now aswell so I just fished in those and got it in about 28 casts.

My fishing level was 600+110. I used the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole (30+ fishing when equipped), the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat which you can obtain from the daily fishing quest rewards in Orgrimmar/Stromwind or Dalaran (5+ fishing when equipped & 75+ fishing lure every 10 minutes - the lure lasts for 10 minuts aswell) and the Nat Pagle's Extreme Anglin' Boots obtained from the Booty Bay fishing contest (5+ fishing).

Obviously showing your fishing pole isn't required, but I wanted things to be obvious for me. If you so choose simply use the part starting at /run.

You can fish up all 3 quest items, and turn in each once per day. I did however stumble upon something quite puzzling today. I usually fish up Flying Tiger Gourami in the area of Thunder Cleft, then head north and fish up Spinefish Alpha in the lake around Binan Village and finally heading back to Angler's Wharf to fish up Mimic Octopus.

However today, after fishing up my Flying Tiger Gourami for the day, I headed to Binan Village for Spinefish Alpha and ended up fishing in a Tiger Gourami pool and caught a second Flying Tiger Gourami. I didn't know that you could get more than one of these quest items, but you can only turn one in per day still, which sucks.

I thought that items like this, once acquired, you couldn't again until the quest reset (dailies reset, ect.).

I just wanted to point out that I was on my new pally (level 31 *yesterday*) with a fishing skill of 15 at the time, and I had absolutely nothing for fishing, not even a pole, and I caught the flying tiger gourami next to the fishing trainer at Halfhill (yes, I dragged my lowbie butt with the help of a mage (port) and someone with a 2 person mount to Halfhill to fish - to see if the chance of golden carp catches really was almost 100% at low fishing levels - which it was *almost - there were a few other fish, but only like 1/30 were something else, and there was no junk at all* When I caught it I was all happy and mad at the same time, because I caught it in like three casts (took 2 hours on my main) , HOWEVER, I wasn't able to accept it and turn it in because my level was WAY too low I guess *even though it doesn't have a level req. on the actual item* So much for grinding the Nat Pagel rep early - it will sit in the bank till I can turn it in I guess... :( either way, Leveling fishing seems a LOT faster this way, skill up every other fish (currently 300, started yesterday, didn't fish for long) when I went to SW to do the fishing daily, I fished up like 10 fish and didn't even get one point O.o, then back to every other fish when I went back to Halfhill. Plus the area around the fishing trainer doesn't have any mobs that I have found so far to kill you, however there still is the random hordie that says "31? MWAHAHAHAHA /gank" so that is the only problem I've had with it so far. Anyways, I just thought I would share that incase anyone else was looking for a highly profitable area to level fishing as a lowbie. (a stack of the golden carp goes for around 40G on my realm, and is easy to get in a few min. which is great for low level toons just getting started. Just make sure you have someone to help you get there or it could drive you crazy trying to find a way there.) Good luck and happy fishing!

The Flying Tiger Gourami can now be caught easily in the Ruby Lake on the Timeless Isle. The Ruby Lake is the red lake (on your map) to the North-East.

(Shoot an albatross when they get low at the Celestial Court, then ride them until you are over the lake, then attack them a lot - they will stop moving forward - and kill them. Drop into the lake. Swim to shore. Taa daa.)

I can fish up a Flying Tiger Gourami in under 20 casts almost every day. Never seen the other fish here though.

This fish can also be caught from the Ruby Lake (Loc: 63,27) on top of the mountain north of the timeless isle. It is also the spawn location for the rare Garnia. For more information on how to get there, check the comment tab at Garnia.

Out of 200 catches, following is the result:

Golden Carp: 95, 47.7%
Jewel Danio: 46, 23.1%
Krasarang Paddlefish: 24, 12.1%
Empror salmon: 22, 11.1%
Sealed Crates: 6, 3.0%
Flying Tiger Gourami: 5, 2.5%
Reef Octopus: 1, 0.5%

I'm not sure about the required minimum Fishing Skill but I'm already at 600.

When I use Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole and Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat, the percentage of catching the Flying Tiger Gourami becomes 7% (1 out of 15 catches)

Ok, so now all 3 Nat Pagle fish are supposed to be able to be gotten in Timeless Isle.

Mimic Octopus on the West coast (by Horde camp for me, not sure if Alliance is same)
Flying Tiger Gourami up in the Ruby Pool

Does anyone know the location to fish up the Spinefish Alpha on Timeless Isle?

Interestingly, I've caught this one once in the same lake down by Shado-Pan Fallback in Kun-Lai Summit where you catch Spinefish Alpha. (Normally I start there for Spinefish Alpha, then fly north to the Shado-Pan Fallback lake to get Flying Tiger Gourami, but one time the Flying Tiger Gourami dropped while I was still working on the Spinefish Alpha.)

I usually catch all three fish types in an hour or so. Today, however, it took me at least an hour to fish up the Flying Tiger Gourami alone. A bit daunting (and not fun) in my opinion.

I came across a trick maybe. I had fished up one of these Pagle fish and in the span of a few minutes fished up another. I really didn't want to lose it and as I have auto loot on and knew I couldn't have two in my bags at the same time I kept clicking it's icon. What happened is it went straight into my mailbox and a note from the Postmaster. Like when you are raiding and have run out of room sometimes the Postmaster is kind to you and sends you the epic items later. Kinda nice as fishing is so meh. Good Luck all.

I was fishing the sha-infested areas in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms and caught this, a Flying Tiger Gourami, instead of a Spinefish Alpha. It seems like they did not update the fish table in that zone.

Ok this will help alot of ppl. I noticed that if u get the mimic octopus quest u get incresed drop rate on the flying tiger gourami. i have ben farming for weeks and have tryied one before the other and today i just comfimed that while u have mimic octopus quest ill take just a couple casts if not in the first to get this one.
