On use item that temporarily increases reputation gain by 10%, similar to the racial effect of Diplomacy. The effects are lost upon death and don't stack with Diplomacy.

This hat was in one Darkmoon Game Prize I got from doing Darkmoon Dailies on the 5.2 PTR. It can also be purchased for 10 Darkmoon Prize Ticket from Gelvas Grimegate.

When you use the item, you initially summon a bunch of fireworks. For the duration of the buff, your character will appear to wear a fun purple hat. This hat periodically sparkles and has small fireworks.

Requires the Darkmoon Faire, so the only advantage over the carousel is not having to go back to the faire.

The two buffs to experience and reputation gains, from using a Darkmoon Top Hat, and WHEE! from riding the Darkmoon Faire carousel, cannot be used together.

As of patch 5.2, if you already have the Darkmoon Top Hat buff on you, then riding the carousel does *not* give you the WHEE! buff.
But if you have the WHEE! buff on you, using a Darkmoon Top Hat will remove WHEE!, replacing it with the similar buff from the Darkmoon Top Hat.

These buffs do *not* persist through death.

The WHEE! buff does not elapse if you log off, so you can pick up the buff while the DMF is in town (do this on all your toons), and benefit from it the next time you log on, regardless if the DMF is running or not.

*Note* that these buffs do stack with other experience and/or reputation gain effects, such as:

Human Racial: Diplomacy (+10%)
The Heirloom Armor set
The Guild Reward banners

They may also stack (I've not tested yet) with the experience gain buffs from these items:

Elixir of Ancient Knowledge +300% experience gain, dropped by Krol the Blade
Honor Hold Favor or Thrallmar Favor

Are you only able to use these while in the Darkmoon Faire? I had one in my bags and it disappeared when I hearthed, yet the Faire is still going.

For those trying to get as much XP while leveling i can confirm that this buff stacks with the Learning by Example Buff . From the Adventurer's Journal. Although this can only be done between level 75 and 85.

The top hat is superior to the carousel buff if you are PVP'invg and want to gain XP or rep with a faction like the Silverwings or Stormpikes.

With the carousel buff, the first time you die in a battleground, the buff is gone the rest of the game.
With the tophat if you die, just put another hat on!

just a warning, if you looted everything from Darkmoon Game Prize except the hat, if you have auto-looting enabled in your options and you shift-right click the box just to see what's inside, the hat will be looted anyways to you inventory, I learned the hard way, first time I thought that maybe I didn't hold shift properly, but the next day same thing happened with another box that I was keeping with just a hat inside

Although this is not BoP, you cannot auction this item as it requires the Darkmoon Faire to be open, meaning this counts as an item with a limited duration which cannot be put on the AH.

anyone know if these stack with the guild battle standards?

If it does, then i plan to use this item to decrease the 24K pirates i'm going to have to kill in Tanaris to gain my Steemwheedle Cartel rep back WITHOUT losing my Bloodsail Buccaneers which i recently got to exalted.

If you find one of these in the Darkmoon Game Prize, keep it there unless you intend to use it as it will still be in there until the next month of faire where you'll be able to use it again. That means they will not disappear if you keep them in a lootable item, that works for all world event items such as the Mechanical Greench that drops from one of the winter veil gifts. I also tested to use a winter veil gift a few months after the event had ended and it was usable even though the text says "Requires Feast of Winter Veil". I'm not sure if that is still possible but it worked for me in the beginning of this year so it's always worth trying if you intend to use these after the event as that would be the only way to do it.

Edit 1: I can confirm that this method still works because I just tested it. Once the faire ends, you will be able to loot the hat from the boxes and use it at any time without the event being active but make sure you do it before logging off as that will make the item disappear. Once used the item will be consumed but atleast you can have your exp/rep buff on at any time without an active world event. Another note is that you can send the bag between characters while containing the hat but the hat itself can't be mailed.

Edit 2: As answer to https://www.wowhead.com/mop-classic/user=jimmyego question: The timer on the hat is 1 hour and it will only start ticking once you wear it but if you loot the hat from the bag you must use it before the Darkmoon Faire ends or your hat will disappear. If you do use the hat and log off just after, the timer on the hat will not stop ticking like with any other spell/buff cast on you. Which means once you log back on, your buff will have either ended or be ticking down to almost 0 depending on for how long you have been gone, else it will be active until you either die, dispell it or until the timer runs out.

Edit 3: As Blizzard have noticed this "bug" they have now fixed it so that you can't use the Darkmoon Top Hat unless the Darkmoon Faire is open meaning, these are as they were intended just a traveling WHEE! buff.

I'm trying to gather all of the important information in one place for convenience sake:

The hat:
- Can be purchased from Gelvas Grimegate with10x Darkmoon Prize Ticket.
- Is sometimes found in a Darkmoon Game Prize.
- Is consumed on use.
- Cannot be refunded.
- Does not take your head item slot.
- Requires the Darkmoon Faire to be in town but you don't have to be at the faire to use.
- Disappears from your inventory after the faire ends.
- Does not disappear from your inventory if you log out during the faire and do not log in until the next faire.

The buff (Darkmoon Top Hat):
- Ticks down while logged out.
- Does not persist through death.
- Does not stack with WHEE! and will override it.
- Does not disappear from you if the faire is over and time is still left on the buff.

The buff ((Darkmoon Top Hat) stacks with:
- Diplomacy.
- Enlightenment.
- Guild Banners.
- Heirlooms.

This hat does, however, stack with heirloom gear and the guild rep/exp buff banner Standard of Unity. So, it's a nice added bonus if you're trying to quickly level an alt by running them through dungeons. However they do NOT persist through death so be careful with casters and AoEs because if you die, that's it.

These will disappear from your inventory when the darkmoon faire ends, however, there is a trick to using these anytime you like. These hats can be contained in Darkmoon Game Prize which does not require DMF to be in town to open, so all you have to do is turn auto-looting off and check your boxes that you get from dailies for hats, and if they have a hat, don't open them and bank 'em for when you wanna use em. The boxes can be traded and mailed freely.

I was running around on my L73 monk, doing all the fishing/cooking dailies, and eventually was in Zangarmarsh looking to gain Cenarion and/or Sporeggar rep. I did *not* have enlightenment, but I do have the popularity guild buffs, and was wearing the hat. The rep I got from killing Bloodscale naga was 300... does it only buff if you get exp from the kill/quest? The kirin-tor rep from the dalaran dailies was 390, so I think I was getting the buff there...

If by some chance you don't like the look of the hat(possibly for RP purposes) but want to keep the bonus xp/rep gain of it, you can use an item like Vrykul Drinking Horn by using that item followed by right clicking away its buff. You'll be left with the bonus xp/rep gain but no more hat on your head

so in MoP classic the buff from the Hat disappeared, while the buff from the carousel remained even after the end of DMF.
