Upcoming Changes to Leatherworking in Shadowlands Patch 9.2

Leatherworking in Shadowlands 9.2 will see the following changes. Not all recipe sources are known at this time.

Protogenic Pelt - New reagent from Zereth Mortis Skinning, used in most new Leatherworking recipes.
Crafter's Mark IV and Crafter's Mark of the First Ones - new Optional Reagents to set minimum level of crafted gear to 60 and iLevel to 233 and 262 respectively. Similar to the Crafter's Mark of the Chained Isle, the Crafter's Mark of the First Ones creates an item that is Unique-Equipped, so only one piece with this Optional Reagent may be worn at any one time. Crafter's Mark IV will likely replace the Crafter's Mark of the Chained Isle, since it creates an item 3 levels higher that does not have the Unique-Equipped restriction. You will be able to purchase these recipes from Vilo, the Quartermaster for The Enlightened faction in Zereth Mortis with Friendly and Honored reputation respectively.

Why is Leatherworking Useful in Shadowlands?

Armor kits have returned to Shadowlands, and these consumables will be in demand, particularly by tanks and other classes where high armor is important. Since these are temporary buffs, these can be worn over existing Enchants. Chest only. Lasts 2 hours.

Leatherworkers create the base item required by all leather AND mail wearers to create Legendary-crafted gear -- the Umbrahide and Boneshatter armor pieces. Legendary base items have four ranks, each corresponding to an increasingly powerful version of the Legendary item it helps create.

Pattern: Pallid Bone Flute is a rare find from Pile of Bones, a random spawn around Korthia. Its effect will be recognizable to anyone who's ever stood in the Auction House while someone played the Piccolo of the Flaming Fire from Stratholme.

So a Leatherworker can craft 8 different pieces of level 175 leather legendary gear, but you can only equip one?

I notice that it doesn't say whether or not these are BoE like the level 100 and 165 gear.

I have crafted a max level (ilvl 235) Umbrahide leggings during beta testing. There are 3 ranks that need to be leveled to get to max rank of level 4. It requires a set level of experience at each rank to reach the next one. You will need an enchanter to enchant Heavy Callous Hide for each armor piece. Each crafted base item armor requires Orboreal Shards. One Oboreal shard costs 1,000 gold. They can be purchased from vendors in the crafting area in Oribus and they are tradeable. You only get experience for whatever specific armor piece you are crafting. Changing to a different armor piece will require going through the exact same number of ranks and requirements.

Umbrahide leggings Rank 1 (190 iLvl) - needs 10 experience
crafted 10 of them for one experience each
To craft one at this rank you need:
Enchanted Heavy Callous Hide 25
Heavy Callous Hide 1
Heavy Desolate leather 5
Desolate Leather 75
ONE Orboreal Shard (1,000 gold) for each crafted armor piece at this rank

Umbrahide leggings is the only item listed at rank 4. All of my other possible crafted legendary armor pieces are listed at rank one. I crafted a leather head and it gave me 1/10 experience at rank 1. So you start the above process all over again.

Armor kits crafting cost was increased, the leveling 1-100 is now out of date (way less optimal).

In case anyone is wondering (because I was):

After reaching Leatherworking 100 return to Torghast and the Runecarver should have a new quest for you (if you've completed the introductory Torghast quests) with the reward being the Mail and Leather legendary base-piece recipes.

Note that for leveling you're much better off making the mail gear. Why? Because they use a lot less leather and some more Pallid Bones, which are WAY cheaper than leather. At the moment each desolate leather is 100g on my realm, while Pallid Bones are 4g each. So if a piece uses 10 fewer leather and 6 more bones, it's MUCH cheaper to make.

Don`t buy Penumbra Thread in Shadowlands,it costs 5 gold.Buy it in Boralus if you are exalted with Proudmoores,it will cost 4 gold :)

update:
Unfortunately,Blizz SoBs in their wisdom of stopping ppl from making gold,raised the price to 8g..but it`s still cheaper to buy it in BfA..7,20g.

The ilvl of the gear in this guide needs to be updated. The base level level 60 gear is 151 on live. I am assuming that the crafter's marks will upgrade this later, but the base level is 151.

Shadowlands Leatherworking Legendary Armor
Umbrahide and Boneshatter Armor pieces are materials needed to create Legendary Leather or Plate Armor pieces.

It's to create Legendary Leather or MAIL Armor of course ;)

The cost of this on live is TOO insane! I was discussing the cost difference between rank 2 to rank 3 of tailoring (bracers) to the leatherworking leggings from rank 2 - rank 3. The difference is over half. Mine is going to cost (at AH prices) 150k gold to make. The leatherworking one is going to cost 356k gold to make! That is SO ridiculous and needs a nerf!

You pretty much just do mass leather farming in bastion for about an hour.
There's little raptorbirds that don't give leather but level up LW super fast because you get more leather at higher skill.

Wait one darn second..... Are you telling me if I chose the alt way of leveling up I can not CAN NOT craft legendary pieces? If so, This is something that should be mentioned so us with alts for crafting don't get the short end of the stick! Now My leatherworker is garbage in SL! Is there away to get around this or will i be able to get when I'm 60? I need to know.

Zone specific leathers aren't showing up for me... Says they can be learned at 25 from trainers, but Oribos has nothing for me. Maxed out with all recipes learned.

It seems that for some reason that shadescale and shadowscale pauldrons and helms both, you can't transmog something else over them.
My advice only wear these if absolutely necessary. They go for almost nothing on my realm these days, but they are what you make on your
way to 100/100 shadowlands leather working before moving on and upgrading your leather working to 150.

So, they've made a change for the EXP of Umbrahide parts and I got:
25 EXP per Rank 1
50 EXP per Rank 2
75 EXP per Rank 3

So I guess they've made it 3 crafts per rank
