Patch 4.2 will introduce Cataclysm's first legendary item - the staff
Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest
. Throughout this guide, we'll try to cover as much as it's currently possible to know about it: how to get it, what to prepare for, why it's awesome, and why it makes sense that it will exist - as well as some hand in hand speculation and facts on how it will all turn out.
Long story short, it will be filled with spoilers, so if you intend to figure it all out by yourself, it's probably safe to read carefully, as we do
not
intend to use spoiler-tags every time there is a potential spoiler.
No really, we won't.

A Closer Look at the Staff
The most exciting thing about new items has always been how they look and what their statistics. It's always good to know if it's worth going for - besides being an awesome legendary caster staff, of course!
The Three Stages
Just as the previous legendary,
Shadowmourne
, was upgraded in stages,
Dragonwrath
will follow this style, which is a great way to gradually progress through the hard work needed. During the quest-line, the staff is upgraded two times, both upgrades requiring plenty of work and dedication from both you and your guild. The stages are shown below in detail, and includes links to the quest walk-through.
NOTICE:
It seems that the first two items has disappeared out of the blue at some point during the
Public Test Realm
, but still shows up as quest-rewards at the respectful quests
Nordrassil's Bough
and
Alignment
. This is the reason for the potential broken item-links, and is most likely either a slip-up or a bug.
Quest-line:
Stage 1 - What the Timeless Eye Unveiled
Stage 2 - The Ascension of the Blue Aspect
Stage 3 - The Heart and Souls of Flame
Item:
Branch of Nordrassil
Runestaff of Nordrassil
Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest
Model:
It's worth to note that there's seemingly a "Stage 0" of the staff:
Monster - Caster Legendary Stage 0
, complete with a
very
nice model. Perhaps we will see it during the first stage during one of the quests, or Blizzard decided to scrap it.
Wrath of Tarecgosa - The Legendary Proc
Like any other legendary item,
Dragonwrath
has a very nifty proc, that truly makes it interesting:
Wrath of Tarecgosa
. The wording seems to indicate an effect much like the Mastery of
Elemental
Shaman
:
. At this time, it is unknown as to what rate it procs at, but according to the wording, it seems that the duplicated spell deals full damage.
However, there's a slight twist, as the damage seems to be arcane, as seen in
Wrath of Tarecgosa
. This most likely means, that it's converted to an arcane-based spell, rather than being a
complete
duplicate of the fired spell. DoT-based classes, such as
Affliction
Warlock
or
Shadow
Priest
should not lose hope, as it will still be awesome for those too, as shown in the following blue post:
Dragonwrath is designed to be DOT-friendly. Simply put, it has a chance to copy each tick of a DOT spell. There is no internal cooldown, since we want it to be good for warlocks and Shadow priests.
Furthermore, the proc chance is adjusted favorably for pet specs that derive a significant portion of their DPS from pets.
Our goal is to tune Dragonwrath in such a way that you can give it to any caster without anticipating certain classes or specs getting a bigger benefit than others.
Noticed the "no internal cooldown"? Thought so. Commence the potential air-clutter!
Tarecgosa's Visage - Legendary Dragon Form...?
But wait - there might even be more to it than that! Another effect that is most likely also bound to the staff is
Tarecgosa's Visage
. Is it an actual mount-spell, or just something temporary? Compare the details of the spell to those of
Sandstone Drake
. Looks similar, right?
Interesting, to say the least - especially considering that
models has been found for Tarecgosa
, which can mimic all normal flying mount animations, though it isn't linked in the database yet, as the corresponding NPC doesn't seem to exist. Here's to hoping for an actual mount-spell though, never the less!
The Story so far...
The story and lore behind
Dragonwrath
evolves around more than just
Mount Hyjal
and the
Firelands
, which will be the associated raiding tier. Both the Bronze and Blue Dragonflights takes part in the epic quest-line that brings the staff into existence.
After the demise of
Malygos
in
The Eye of Eternity
a few years past, the Blue Dragonflight has been without a leader and guide.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder
has taken care of the
Heart of Magic
since, until a fitting replacement could be chosen. There are two prime candidates:
Kalecgos
, which most might remember from
Sunwell Plateau
, and
Arygos
, the son of
Malygos
, who was also present in
Temple of Ahn'Qiraj
. They both have very different views of what path the flight should take. We will also meet the dragon
Tarecgosa
, who will - as is hinted by the name of the staff - have a very big part in the quest-line.
The Bronze Dragonflight is still fighting the time-lines and the Infinite Dragonflight, but this time it seems they aren't the ones behind the new event that
Anachronos
has located, which seems shrouded in chaos and mystery. The link to the Bronze Dragonflight is most likely also be a warm-up for the future
Caverns of Time: War of the Ancients
raid, which is due to be part of Cataclysm. Who knows, maybe the staff will be further updated there..? In either case, it's a nice way of tying the story together.
The Quest-chain for Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest
Lots of details are still unknown, but we know enough to give a much more detailed view at what is going to transpire during the quest-line as it looks now, as well as give good guesses at what you - the player - will need to do in order to obtain the legendary staff. Don't worry - there's still plenty of things to figure out by your own.
Before starting the long adventure,
it is required
that you have defeated a
Molten Lord
in the
Firelands
OR
defeat all the bosses of Cataclysm's first raiding tier, and getting the achievements below:
The Bastion of Twilight
Blackwing Descent
Throne of the Four Winds
The below clarification was added with the update of the patch notes at
2011-6-24
:
Once any of these achievements have been unlocked, players can accept the quest A Legendary Engagement from Ziradormi in Grommash Hold in Orgrimmar, or Coridormi atop the Wizard's Sanctum in Stormwind (players who have already completed any of these achievements are immediately eligible for this quest). Players who become eligible for the quest series by killing a Molten Lord in the Firelands will automatically receive the quest Your Time Has Come, leading them to the start of the questline. The legendary item questline is only available to druids, mages, priests, shaman, and warlocks.
Before that, you will
not
be able to start the first stage. If you have not been lucky enough to have defeated the whole first tier, it's recommended to ask your guild to let you quickly get to the first gathering-part of the quest, before starting on the bosses.

In this stage, you will take part in uncovering that a terrible series of (hardly unfortunate, but still) events, that could very well mean the end of Azeroth, as well as disrupting the first part of it. You will also meet members of both the Blue and Bronze Dragonflight. In the end, you will be the owner of the
Branch of Nordrassil
, the first of the three stages of the staff!
A Legendary Engagement
or
A Legendary Engagement
Ziradormi / Coridormi
Anachronos
You start the legendary quest-chain by talking to either
Ziradormi
(located in Grommash Hold in Orgrimmar) or
Coridormi
(located in the Wizard's Sanctum in Stormwind), who asks you to travel to the Caverns of Time located in
Tanaris
and speak to the mighty Bronze dragon
Anachronos
, who most players should remember from the quest-chain to unlock
Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj
and
Temple of Ahn'Qiraj
back in Classic.
A Wrinkle in Time
Anachronos
Anachronos
Upon speaking to
Anachronos
, he will let you witness the current future of Azeroth. This will be shown by a cut-scene depicting the future event and the terrible fate that will befall Azeroth - unless something is done quickly. It seems only the help of a mortal will prevent it from happening. As you might have guessed, this mortal is going to be you.
All-Seeing Eye
Anachronos
Anachronos
The future of Azeroth does not look good. Luckily,
Anachronos
knows of how to create an artifact that can unveil the events that seems to take place at Coldarra - the domain of the Blue Dragonflight.
The gathering of these materials will be your first real challenge, as the 25
Eternal Ember
will take some time to get by. Now that the Firelands are opened, research shows that they, in fact,
Bind on Pickup
and
can be Master-Looted
. They seem to drop from bosses in stacks of 1-3 on 25-man, and 0-1 in 10-man. They will also only show up, if there is a person present at the raid who is on the quest. Notice that this is
not
the same as
Living Ember
, which is the crafting material of this tier (like
Runed Orb
or
Primordial Saronite
from Wrath of the Lich King).
On top of all that, there is the (remember that
affects this, saving you ) needed to buy the 3
Sands of Time
from
Yasmin
.
On a Wing and a Prayer
Anachronos
Tarecgosa
Now that the
Timeless Eye
is in your possession, it is time to find out what is going on in Coldarra. After the death of
Malygos
, the place has become a dangerous place, so travel with caution, and hope you'll find a dragon that won't kill you on the spot.
Through a Glass, Darkly
Tarecgosa
Tarecgosa
After meeting up with the blue dragon
Tarecgosa
, and showing her the
Timeless Eye
, she accompanies you inside the Nexus, which is known as
The Nexus
during this quest. This involves various encounters, a slighly changed layout, and a fight against
Thyrinar
, a Twilight Dragon, at the end. However, you will only be able to be assisted by
Tarecgosa
.
An interesting effect is
Presence of Tarecgosa
, which seems to be a way of helping casters without healing spells to survive better in the phased Nexus. The naming also fits this quite well, and should give you a nice sneak-peek at how the legendary proc is going to work.
Actionable Intelligence
Tarecgosa
Kalecgos
Tarecgosa
advices you to quickly take contact to
Kalecgos
in
Mount Hyjal
, so that he may know of the events you both just witnessed. It seems that
Arygos
is not in league with none other than
Deathwing
. As you might have guessed, this is not good - at all.
Delegation
Kalecgos
Kalecgos
Upon learning of the events,
Kalecgos
tasks you with an even more difficult mission - to obtain the
Branch of Nordrassil
from inside
Firelands
. Should that fail, Nordrassil could be consumed in flame, from a ritual performed in the Firelands. This might be the very same event we witness in
Thrall
's vision in the
official "Patch 4.2: Rage of the Firelands"-trailer
.
There has been a bit of uncertainty regarding how the branch should be obtained, especially considering the recent attack from
Majordomo Staghelm
and his Druids of the Flame, that just paid a visit to Nordrassil in the new
The Call of the World-Shaman
quest-line.
However, the details of the spell
Blessed Defender of Nordrassil
directly states that the player "Recently defeated
Volcanus the Firelord
and rescued the
Branch of Nordrassil
.". He seems to be a special event mini-boss that will probably show up once a person on this quest is present in
Firelands
. According to the related spell
Blessed Defender of Nordrassil
, this could very well end up being
quite
an interesting fight.
Nordrassil's Bough
Kalecgos
Kalecgos
Upon retrieving the
Branch of Nordrassil
, deliver it to
Kalecgos
. He has meanwhile taken residence at the Amber Ledge in
Borean Tundra
, and witnessed the events you saw in
The Nexus
by himself. He will infuse the branch with powerful magic, turning it into a powerful staff. You should now be the proud owner of
Branch of Nordrassil
!

Stage 3 - Quest Progression
During this stage of the quest,
Tarecgosa
becomes a much more integral part of the quests, and the Blue Dragonflight finally gets their new leader. You'll venture into
Firelands
again to further upgrade the staff to the
Runestaff of Nordrassil
, which will be the second stage of the staff!
Emergency Extraction
Kalecgos
Kalecgos
Kalecgos
doesn't feel good about everything that has already transpired, and feels it's safer if
Tarecgosa
is extracted from Coldarra before anything happens to her. He asks you to accompany him, to ensure that she will be safe.
At One
Kalecgos
Kalecgos
Sadly, it seems that
Kalecgos
was right to be uneased. The three of you are ambushed, and
Tarecgosa
sacrifices herself to save
Kalecgos
' life. In order to safe her, and not die completely,
Kalecgos
asks to bind her essence to you. This is the first time that a dragon essence has been bound to a mortal, which will most likely make it quite the epic event!
Time Grows Short
Kalecgos
Kalecgos
Despite temporarily saving
Tarecgosa
by binding her to you, it can only be made permanent by a (seemingly only blue)
Dragon Aspect
- and the essence won't last until
Malygos
' successor has been chosen. Fortunately, there is a way to extend the essence, but it requires powerful materials.
The quest provides no details as
how
to get the 25
Seething Cinder
, but if the drops are similar to
Shadowmourne
's
Shadowfrost Shard
, it should be expected that they're rare boss drops from
Firelands
.
Alignment
Kalecgos
Kalecgos
At this point, you have succeeded in extending
Tarecgosa
's essence within you.
Kalecgos
uses this to his advantage to get another vote to be
Malygos
' successor - as you can vote on behalf of
Tarecgosa
- so that her survival can be ensured. It is unclear what happens with
Arygos
at this point, but it's safe to assume that he shouldn't be a threat any more. Expect an impressive cut-scene for this event!
This will also mean that the bond with
Tarecgosa
's essence is strengthened in the staff, further upgrading it, and making you the proud owner of
Runestaff of Nordrassil
!

Stage 1 - Quest Progression

Stage 3 - Quest Progression
Heart of Flame
The Stuff of Legends
... more to come?
In this stage, you will finally seal the bond between yourself and
Tarecgosa
, by uncovering the
Heart of Flame
from
Ragnaros
, as well as overcoming the biggest of all the challenges in the quest-line. This will, in turn, turn your staff into the mighty
Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest
, which brings the it to its third and final of the three stages!
Heart of Flame
Kalecgos
Hallegosa
Now that
Kalecgos
has ascended to his new position as the
Aspect of the Blue Dragonflight
, he wants to thank you for all you have done. This will also mean that he needs to create a "more permanent home" for
Tarecgosa
, which requires some work.
In order to do that, your primary mission is to retrieve the
Heart of Flame
from
Ragnaros
in
Firelands
. However, you will also need to empower the Runestaff with
250 Soul Flame Essences
. This is most likely earned the same way as with the quest
A Feast of Souls
for
Shadowmourne
. However, seeing as the requirement is 5 times as big - on top of
Heart of Flame
- it's not entirely certain if fire elementals from
Molten Front
counts in addition to
Firelands
. One can always hope!
Being on the quest also seems to have some impact on the fight against
Ragnaros
, when looking at the effects:
and
Rage of Ragnaros
. This could mean that the fight might be a bit more tricky than "just" defeating him, or simply be minor changes that only really affects you. We will see soon enough.
After the Runestaff has been sufficiently empowered, and you have retrieved the
Heart of Flame
, bring it to
Hallegosa
.
The Stuff of Legends
or
The Stuff of Legends
Hallegosa
Kalecgos
Hallegosa
tells you that the ceremony of handing over the
Heart of Flame
, and will accompany you to meet up with
Kalecgos
in your faction's major city (
Orgrimmar
or
Stormwind City
). At this point, there are no further quests available in the database, but as this quest is tied to both the achievement
Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest
, and the staff given as a reward, it might be the last - for now.
Still, there was much rejoicing, as
Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest - Guild Edition
also gives the
whole guild
the lovely
Lil' Tarecgosa
as a companion. The essence of
Tarecgosa
shall live forever.
What You Will Have Experienced
Lots of things happens during the quest-line, but it's always great to have a list to brag with. It's not necessarily in chronological order, but it's a list never the less.
Carry the amazing staff
Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest
!
The death of
Ragnaros
, and his minions in
Firelands
- especially
Majordomo Staghelm
.
Disrupting a ritual that would make
Nordrassil
burst in flame (and we cannot let that happen twice!).
Kalecgos
' ascension as the new Aspect of Magic, and new leader of the Blue Dragonflight.
Be the first mortal ever to have fused their essence with a dragon. In this case, the dragon
Tarecgosa
. Because of this, you
might
be able to transform into
Tarecgosa's Visage
, acting as a flying mount!
You, and all of your guildies, gets the cute little companion
Lil' Tarecgosa
.
... and much more!
