This currency, first introduced in the Legion prelaunch invasions, returns in 7.2 as currency that is obtainable on the Broken Shore.

Why are the Armies of Legionfall so interested in these? The following was overheard on the Broken Shore:

When are the invasions coming?

The Legion invasions (and Demon Hunter early access) arrived August 9, 2016 (US) and August 10, 2016 (EU). The will continue until August 30, 2016 when Legion launches, and will progressively become more frequent until that point.

Nethershard Currency

Nethershard is a new currency that will be specific to the Legion pre-launch event. These can be earned via invasion scenario events (25-50+ Nethershard per invasion). In addition, Dread Infiltrators in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City will drop roughly 10-12 Nethershards each when killed (plus a chance to drop the Toy Pocket Fel Spreader).

Note that aside from Nethershards, the invasions grant achievements, and also the Stage 2 and Stage 4 chests can have unique weapons in them (that can be upgraded to item level 725).

The items available for Nethershards include transmog sets and item level 700 necks, rings, trinkets, weapon upgrade items, and a pet! These items are sold by Captive Wyrmtongue, who can be found in the Illidari camps in all invasion zones, as well as Orgrimmar and Stormwind City as below.
Note that the vendors in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City require that you complete the Broken Shore scenario to see them; the ones in the invasion zones are visible regardless.

Invasion Scenarios

There will be 6 different invasion events during the pre-launch patch. After the invasions start, they will become more and more frequent as we get closer to the launch of the expansion (August 30, 2016).
Each invasion is a scenario entered by anyone that moves into the invasion area, and has 4 stages. There is a progress bar for Stages 1 and 3 which is zone-wide - you will see how close you are to the next stage. Stage 2 and 4 have boss objectives, and completing these will complete the stage.
Note that the invasion instance you enter may already be in progress, with potentially a stage or stages completed already.
The stages are below:

Stage 1 - Defend against a general invasion point (e.g. Orgrimmar Rear Gate). Mobs are fairly trivial in nature, although numerous.
Stage 2 - Defeat two lieutenants and a commander. The commander spawns after the lieutenants are killed. These bosses hit pretty hard, so DPS and healers have to watch threat.
Stage 3 - Defeat the invading forces marked on the map - a zone-wide objective, with various activities that will advance the progress bar:

There are mobs to kill, of various sizes and strengths. These can be found at invasion points, marked on the map.
There are protected "Legion Structures" also marked on the map. You must kill the mobs protecting the structures; doing so will make the Protected Fel Crystals attackable. The Protected Fel Crystals can drop 1-3 Nethershards each when destroyed. When the crystals are destroyed, the structure collapses.
There are various mini bosses scattered around the zone during this phase. These hit pretty hard, so ideally they need to be tanked or kited. These mini bosses often drop Nethershards, so it's worthwhile helping to kill them! They are marked on the map with skulls.

Stage 4 - Defeat a boss NPC at the original invasion point (requires a group). These bosses hit VERY hard and have some abilities that will kill you if you do not avoid them (e.g. breath mechanics - make sure to stand behind the boss!)

Some other miscellaneous notes:

Zones that have active invasions are marked very clearly on the world map. Note that only zones in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms are involved.

Mousing over the invasion icon will show you a timer, indicating how much time is left in the invasion, so that you can get there.

Entering a zone with an active invasion will put you into a scenario instance. There will be multiple instances going on at one time, so arriving at any point while the invasion is active will allow you to participate.
There are various vehicles you can use to assist you during the invasion (e.g. Demolishers, Glaives). These usually have a few abilities that will do area damage to mobs.
Most of the mobs killed for the invasions do not drop anything, although minibosses do. The shards/chests that are rewarded go into your bags automatically (even if you are dead when the appropriate stage is completed).

Rewards from the invasion are as follows:

Stage 1 - Nil.
Stage 2 - Small Legion Chest, which will contain 5 Nethershard, guaranteed iLevel 700+ Fel-Touched Gear*, and a chance for iLevel 700** weapons, with very unique models.
Helping to kill the minibosses during this stage will reward more Nethershards (5-10 extra).
Stage 3 - 10 Nethershard at the end of the stage. Additionally, mini-bosses during this stage drop Nethershards (reportedly 5-15). Therefore, killing these can net you a much higher yield than any other stage!
Stage 4 - Large Legion Chest, which will contain 10 Nethershard, guaranteed iLevel 700+ Fel-Touched Gear*, a chance for iLevel 700** weapons, with very unique models, and a chance for Coalesced Fel.

TOTAL: 25-80+ Nethershard per invasion

*This armor is the same armor that makes up the 4 transmog armor ensembles available for 200 Nethershard. If you are wanting only the transmog appearances and not the gear, collecting it piece-by-piece from these chests will be presumably much slower than buying the Ensemble.
This armor has a chance to be Warforged - this can boost it to item level 705, 710, 715, or 720.

**These weapons can be upgraded to iLevel 725 in increments of 5 item levels at a time using Coalesced Fel, which will also be available during the pre-launch event

Completing a single invasion rewards the achievement Stand Against the Legion.
Completing 6 of the invasions (as listed below) will reward Defender of Azeroth: Legion Invasions

The above achievements will be Feats of Strength (similar to Tripping the Rifts from the Cataclysm pre-expansion event) that will not be obtainable after Legion launches.

Another Feat of Strength that will be exclusively available during the Legion pre-launch event is It All Makes Sense Now (collect all 12 of the pamphlets from Doomsayer NPCs in Orgrimmar/Stormwind).

Getting to the Invasions

Below is a summary of ways to get to the invasions. I have included many different routes, including some that may be obvious (for those who may be returning to the game after a while).

Nethershard can be exchanged at Reluctant Quartermasters, Captive Wyrmtongues. These can be found at Illidari camps, which are located in the zones under invasion.
In Dun Morogh for example, there is one just outside the Gates of Ironforge. In Westfall there is one in the north between The Jansen Stead and Saldean's Farm at the fork in the road.

Felbat Pup, Coalesced Fel, and the Transmog Sets are the same for everyone. The Item Level 700 equipment is class and spec specific.

Nethershard rewards and cost are significantly different on the PTR at the moment compared to previous comments. Invasions seem to reward 30 Nethershard, with 10 bonus Nethershard for completing the invasion the first time.

The cost for Felbat Pup and Coalesced Fel are 150 Nethershard each.

Ensemble: Fel-Infused Cloth Armor, Ensemble: Felshroud Leather Armor, Ensemble: Fel-Chain Mail Armor, Ensemble: Felforged Plate Armor are 200 Nethershard each.

Item Level 700 gear like Rings and Trinkets, e.g. Legionnaire's Fel Pendant or Felstalker Spine, are 50 Nethershard each.

Just so people know, killing the sub bosses and big mobs (aka siege breakers) award a lot of this currency.

You can safely skip a lot of the little guys, so you can get more of it :D

I just did an invasion on the newly made Demon Hunter and one invasion on my main DK and I earned 39 and 36 shards so 40-50 seems too optimistic. Or I am unlucky.

This info is a little bit outdated, I think Blizzard hotfixed the way you obtain Nethershard. I see people complaining they are getting very few Nethershard, and most of these people are just flying during the event. Here is my current analysis, keep in mind this comment is being made on the second invasion day:

Stage 1: No shards gained from any sources;
Stage 2: You can get 5-10 Nethershard if you help killing the mini-bosses. You get a Small Legion Chest regardless if you helped or not, which contains 5 Nethershard (not 10);
Stage 3: This is where you get most Nethershard. Most mini-bosses award you from 5-15 Nethershard (maybe even more). If you help to kill a lot of mini-bosses, you get more Nethershard. So far, I have not gained any Nethershard for doing other objectives, such as breaking legion buildings or helping NPCs, but I might need more data/invasions. When the stage ends, you get 10 more Nethershard, regardless of your position in the map.
Stage 4: You get a Large Legion Chest after the boss is dead, which contains 10 Nethershard and other loot, explained in other comments.

TL;DR: Help killing things, specially on stage 3 and you'll get much more Nethershard than if you just AFK in the sky. I'll edit this comment if I find anything new.

IF you take down higher level Legion warriors (those marked with a Skull on your map during phase 3, or the Lieutenants during Stage 2), you will also receive 5-8 Nethershards.

These armor sets can be purchased by ANY toon your account. Since they are battle.net account bound you can transfer them between toons. That mean you can secure ALL of the new armor set looks with your main and transfer them later to toons that can wear that armor type if you do not already have the ability to wear it.

Kill the named bosses while doing invasions and your shard count will increase rapidly, good luck everyone!

2 Recommendations:

1.Don't buy the transmog Ensembles. Each event will give you 2 chests, each chest will give you one of the armor pieces, in 4-7 events you will have all 8 pieces and 500 shards.

2. On Stage 3, only kill the mini-bosses (Skull icon), you don't even need to group with other people. These bosses drop 5-7 Shards, and you will be able to kill 7-10 mini-bosses in this stage for a nice 50 extra shards.

I strongly suggest you not use these to purchase gear/equipment. You'll be upgrading those quickly enough once Legion hits. Instead, buy Felbat Pups. Those are available only during the Invasion events preceding Legion and their price will go up as fewer become available.

Would it be possible for a plate wearer to get the appearence for this? Because I already got the plate armor from the chests and everything else is pretty much useless to me.

If you want to farm these, you can leave the active invasion zone before the final boss is killed. When you then re-enter, the invasion starts over. You will not get any chests in the second round, but you will get the Nethershards from killing mini-bosses as usual. Repeat as many times as you like until the zone is no longer an active invasion zone.

Sometimes this does not work if you leave in the final phase, but if you leave at the end of phase 3, there is no issue.

As a member of the Alliance - so not forget that you can easily ride on top of the zeppelins.

You can go from
Hillsbrad > Tirisfal Glades > board the zeppelin > Oggrimar (will PVP flag you) > Northern Barrens
Westfall > Strangelthorn > Grom'gol Base Camp > Tirisfal Glades

(ofc you can go vice versa)

That should be all quicker than gryphon

This works for all chars that can fly. Maybee you can also run on the zeppelin - but i have not tried that - and at least oggrimar would kill you.

What level does a character need to be to spend the shards? My lower level characters can't see the vendor. Seems did you can earn the shards but can't spend them.

I've got the pet , rings, and trinkets, etc. from the captive wyrmtongue. Any reason I should continue to collect these? Will they be used later when Legion launches?

In addition to the excellent comment (with 295 upvotes when I'm writing this), Nethershards can *ALSO* buy some buff items:

Battle-Mender's Dressing is Unique(5), and costs Nethershardx1 for a stack of 5.

Felstone is Unique(5), costs Nethershardx3, and has a duration of 30 minutes. <--- YOU CAN'T BUY AHEAD and expect them to be in your bags on the 2nd, 3rd invasion along.

Potion of Fel Protection is Unique, and costs Nethershardx3 for the one. Only one.

To reiterate:
The dressings cost 1 shard per stack of 5, and do not go away.
The potion costs 3 shards, and does not go away.
The stones cost 3 shards each, and DO go away.

I expect they will all go away when the invasion is over.

There are tables in at least 3 invasion locations which have buff items on them that I've found. I'll try to compile a list and edit this with more complete info.The buffs items go into your bag, are unique and provide a 10 minute buff. you can immediately use the 1 you acquired and then take a 2nd 1 for later in your bag. If you take a buff item while one is already in your bag the extra one(s) will be mailed to you as lost items and can be taken from mail later and used. the buffs are different at each location and multiple of these buffs may be active at 1 time.

Please note that purchases from the quartermasters other than the pet, will require lvl 100. If your plan is to get all the gear pieces and transmogs, you should do the invasions on a character who is already 100 or about to hit it.

What happens to the shards after Legion goes live? I have 2000 of em and trying to burn my character to 100. If they just vanish that's fine. I just hope the boxes I haven't opened from every invasion I've done since level 24 will still stay and continue to scale until I open them at 100...

Your character must be level 100 in order to purchase any items from the vendor, with the notable exception of the Felbat Pup. I leveled a priest from 1-72 doing nothing but these events, and unfortunately I can't spend the 1800 nethershards I have on him. I won't be able to hit 100 by the deadline. What a waste!

So Legion hit, and all nethershard vendors are gone. No use for the shards anymore? Not quiet.

The nethershard vendor is still in Orgrimmar, but you have to do the ring/trinket quest in order to see it.

Warmage Kath'leen sells the following items for Nethershard.

Cauterizing Void Shard at Honored for 0 Nethershard: An item with a Cauterize effect that provides an instant heal and then damages the player over time.
Legionfall Banner at Honored for 0 Nethershard: A decorative item that summons a banner with the Legionfall logo.
Legion Pocket Portal at Revered for 0 Nethershard: A toy which summons a dangerous portal. This item was originally added during Legion's alpha and players have been searching for it for months.
Repurposed Fel Focuser at Revered for 0 Nethershard: An elixir which grant +500 to a primary stat. This is in the tradition of items from past expansions like Oralius' Whispering Crystal.
Legion Invasion Simulator at Exalted for 0 Nethershard: Summons a toy Legion ship which does battle! Seems like it will work similar to vehicle toys like Darkmoon Tonk Controller.

I'm a fair bit salty I burned several thousand of these on each of my characters during the Legion pre-launch Invasion event thinking they weren't gonna be a thing once the expansion hit... *sigh*

A quick word of advice for those of you attempting to farm Nethershards after completing The Shadow of the Sentinax.

Raid groups are forming all the time in LFG in the Custom Group section. These work very similarly to the raids that were farming Apexis Crystals back in Draenor and can provide a good flow of Nethershards once you've completed the other daily objectives in the zone! The difference now lies in the quirks of the new tagging system. It seems that bringing any NPC bodyguards from your class hall like Akama to help you farm, winds up locking players out of loot and seriously slows down the rates at which everyone gains Nethershards! (As of yet, we are not sure exactly why - we have theories but no one is 100% sure of the reason at the time I am writing this) Please be very mindful of this and before you head down to The Broken Shore, Be sure you dismiss your bodyguard!

If you are wondering how you do this while away from your Order Hall, don't worry, you aren't alone in not knowing! This is almost always the next question asked when someone gets called out for having a bodyguard with them in raid chat! It is actually quite simple! It works the same way as dismissing any other companion creature, like a Hunter's pet! Just right-click their portrait and select Dismiss from the list of options it gives you! Things die so fast in one of these groups that you won't need their power anyway!

Using the Nethershards I gathered from a day's worth of dailies and then a long session of farming demons under the Sentinax in one of these farming raids, i was able to replace all of the gear on my fresh 110 Demon Hunter but one ring and trinket with ilevel 850+ epics gained from Dauntless tokens like Dauntless Bracers. The tokens themselves can also drop from the mobs that spawn in the area speeding up the process and allowing you to save for the next tier of tokens like Relinquished Hood, which start at 880 and have a very small chance to become legendary items!

BEST WAY how to farm these Nethershards:

Go to the Sentinax zone and create a 5 man group.(1/1/3 preferred)
Get a spot near 1 or more portals.
Start stacking and farming mobs

What to do:
When green and blue items(beacons) drop, you can use them to create more portals or empower the portals around you.

What not to do:
If by chance an epic item with the name "Portal-Stone: xxxxx" drops, DO NOT USE IT! If the item is used, it calls a big boss that takes forever to get down and after the battle you need to wait 5-10 minutes for the portals to respawn again.

How much did I make in 1h?
A total of 12k nethershards

Question.

Can anyone give me a logical answer to what i should do with my shards? Should i spend them consistently on buying Relinquished Spaulders every time i get 5k? or should i try and gamble to get a lot more from Wyrmtongue's Cache Key.

Other than potentially stockpiling them to buy the toys n whatnot, i already got my Repurposed Fel Focuser and i would think it wise to instead of pursue cosmetic toys, while legion is still here, to pursue the epic tokens. Relinquished Spaulders for me at least, as my main (and only 110 currently) is a BM hunter and i still don't have the legendary shoulders The Mantle of Command. I mean i know i may never eventually get it.

And i don't think there is anything else super useful we can buy with Nethershards that would numerically empower us, is there? other than potentially these Relinquished Tokens. I'd wager that these nether shards would be a piece of cake to farm after legion, just like Apexis Crystals and Timeless coins are now.

Any Advice or Thoughts would be appreciated.

Overall, I've spent 135,000 Nethershards on Relinquished Spaulders in hopes of upgrading my existing 890. I think this needs to be modified... I'm done farming Sentinax.

Ok, so it seems like nethershards are still useful in 7.3, at least for for legendary crafting. Warmage Kath'leen is still in Deliverance Point, and apart from selling her usual stuff, including Nethershard essence for crafted legendaries, she sells the new Relinquished Armor Set (bound to account) for 400; the description reads "set a champion's item level at 880", so I guess this is more help for alts to catch up (I would assume alts at 110?).

This is so lame. The remaining vendor whatever she sold should be BOA. Not that the gears are any good, i850. You still have to grind alts for Repurposed Fel Focuser and gain revered rep.

this has not been updated in a while! One place for nethershards are the small chests that show up on the minimap at randomly spawned places on the broken shore. Legion invasions drop them as well.

I'm not too certain on other classes, but now that Nethershards are starting to deprecate, I have determined the greatest gold value can be earned by purchasing the 400 shard Dauntless Leggings from Warmage Kath'leen and vendoring the pants they provide. 400 shards produces 17g68s96c consistently, more if it warforges/titanforges. You may be able to sell the Legendary on AH if your server still has demand for them, but unless you need more resources or want to try to get Scraps, I believe this is the best way to 'spend' your shards at this point before BFA formally launches.
