With a max of 100 runic power and it using 8 runic power per second it would get a maximum of: 100/8=12.5 seconds. This is from a single full bar.

To get the full 1 minute length on the spell it would require 8*60=480 runic power. That means that you would have to be in combat for a decently long period of time in order to build up that kind of runic power.

I assume that it just takes 8 runic power per second rather than taking all runic power, then calculating the duration; based on the fact that the tool tip does not say that it consumes all runic power.

I suppose if we had the amounts of runic power generated by each individual ability we could generalize better on how long the gargoyle would actually stick around.

This thing does absolutely beastly damage. At level 68 with about 1025 AP, it hits for 650~ every 2 seconds on a single target. Take that to 80 with the vast AP increase, and you're hitting for a TON. It does drain your Runic Power very fast, though, but it's almost a good thing in that it encourages you to go on a killing spree to keep your RP up. You cannot skip this if you're going into the Unholy tree.

Depending on your tree, Runic Power can be rather easy to get. As a Blood DK especially, I generate Runic Power without any problems, mainly from Butchery, a first tier talent.

While I find this a helpful tip, I've had no issues keeping the gargoyle up, my rotation gets a bit screwy without the use of Death Coil on a regular basis, but I've managed to keep it going fine with a normal Unholy (IT>PS>BSx2>SS>DC) rotation.

If you have the time for it (i.E. a 2 - 3 min. bossfight) you should wait to proc Rune of the Fallen Crusader (http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=53344), before you call the gargoyle.

In the moment you summon it, it takes a snapshot of your attack power so with Rune of the Fallen Crusader the +30% strength gives a nice dps boost over the hole 60 seconds.

I think it has its own threat table, because I used it and stopped attacking, and the mob immediately started attacking the Gargoyle. After a bit I tried to get the mob to attack me, and it took a few swings to do so. I may be wrong, but from that test I'd assume the gargoyle does have its own threat.

This thing is ridiculous in PvP. It hits like a TRUCK, which is fine, whatever, but it spawns like 60 yards in the damned air which makes it very difficult to see, target, and kill. It's nearly impossible for melee to deal with.

Gargoyle is currently VERY out of line with its dmg. I guess any Unholy DK not using this talent would be considered as waisting a lot of dmg. Check this out.

For the notice: shaman taking dmg had ~900 resilience so count how much dmg gargoyle would make on you.
Expect gargoyle to be substantially nerfed soon.

This ability will be nerfed in the next patch (currently in PTR), reducing both the maximum duration to 30 seconds and the base damage will be reduced.

This talent is going to become the new 51 point talent in patch 3.1. Unholy Blight is going to take it's place as the unholy 21 point talent. The damage is being increased and the runic power cost is being decreased.

the coefficient on the gargolye's damage is 40% (or 50% with 5/5 impurity) of the DK's AP, which could be as high as 2500 per hit buffed... DK's death coil has the exact same coefficient

3300 if realistic because they work like a DoT, with good timing and using as many AP cooldowns/trinkets (especial if you are an orc with bloodrage and command), you could pump up its damage quite a bit

combine that with ebon plague on the target (13% spell damage) and those numbers seem plausible from the screen shot seem, its basically a death coil every 2 seconds for only 16rp (except its nature damage instead of shadow)

though the nerf coming is more of an indirect one, the ability is the same but being swapped with unholy blight meaning they have to choose between gargolye and possibly an even more OP ability mark of blood

it has also been nerfed before, duration limit cut in half, but that was more of a pve nerf, though if you want to nerf it that way then make it work like dancing rune weapon where instead of using 50 then sustaining it, it just uses up all available rp and that sets the duration... maybe even getting people to pick up runic power mastery in frost for once

the gargolye is really squishy, its hard to melee since it flys it but last time i checked they only have about 6k hp, if you can find the time, kill it since the DK wont be able to pop another for 3mins

and finally, the DK cannot control it for the duration so you could save someone by pulling it to yourself with a taunt, the DK can only set the initial target so he cant switch it back if you taunt it

Well for anyone thinking "Well What is this thing good for?"

Well i find its good on boss fights and large mobs.I personally like to have trinkets to increase my attack power so i pop my ghoul and my gargoyle,1 of my trinkets,my talent tree magic shield,Bone shield,icebound fortitude,and horn of winter.You wont have all of these unless you are unholy speced.

After all of those i spam Scourge strike which is good for about 15 RP a hit and you can hit it twice.so about 30 RP then blood strike and plague strike and icy touch.

Doing this will get your RP up good and prevent you from taking more than 60% of the normal melee damage you would take and less than 75% or spell damage.That means your spell damage taken is cut by almost 75% and melee by almost 50%.

Gargoyle+Ghoul+unholyblight=super leet DPS

As a unholy dps, is this a very worth to get talent?
I use unholy blight and death coil for RP dump. I think that this wud be a good talent for dps.

Current status of gargoyle:
-scales with all physical haste benefits at the same rate as the player
-attack power coefficient is 0.4
-base damage per strike is 120
-does not inherit any crit from the player
-does not inherit any +damage % modifiers from the player, such as bone shield, desecration, or blood presence
-player stats are taken as a snapshot when the gargoyle is launched; that is, when you cast this spell, however much attack power and haste is the amount your gargoyle strikes will be basing themselves off of.

As of 3.2.2, this talent point has become completely worthless for PVP.

As an Unholy Death Knight, you will either not live long enough to call him down, or your opponent(s) won't live long enough for you to justify using him. And when given the choice, who would choose to summon this thing, over firing off Death Pact, and instantly regaining 40% of your health? Or even Icebound Fortitude. Or sending your ghoul leaping into a group and detonating him with Corpse Explosion for massive AoE shadow damage?

Considering that now the gargoyle is not an AoE, will NOT persist through your own death, barely under your control, and is very susceptible to being killed, the only use I found for him is to send him off as a parting shot to a fleeing player...and a slow one at that. No more using him to guard bases in Arathi Basin after you die or in your absence. I rarely see him make an appearance anymore.

Besides that, you should have a point in Blight, making your Death Coil the primary RP attack, and one that you should be shooting ASAP.

PVE though, it is still worth it for his extra damage, though not as powerful as it used to be.

do you know how far wthe gargoyle will follow the target?

a human death knight passed in front of me and i happened to have enough rune power to activate ir right away, the gargoyle flew towards the enemy firing till i lost sight...

i wonder how far did shego before she disappeared..

and i could see the nature damage rolling up from far far away...

i also wonder if the human DK died...

i lost target and the damages were still rolling..

This spell can basically be seen as the Unholy DK replacement of the Raise Dead spell.
Since Unholy DKs use Raise Dead to call forth their minion, Summon Gargoyle is equivalent to what the other two specs use Raise Dead for: targeted burst damage with a pet.

Important thing is that Gargoyle is in old hunter's aggressive stance, so it will start fights when you're near enemies.

As of 4.3 can anyone tell me which Death Knight abilities and wether Trinkets ETC will increase it's damage? I want to know where to put it in my cooldown macro.

This ability will appearently do "plague" damage with the 5.2 patch. It still says shadow damage in the PTR school type but my guess is that it will be a combination of shadow damage and the nature damage mentioned in the tooltip.

If you summon the gargoyle whilst under the bridge in Blade's Edge Arena, the gargoyle will land on the bridge and will take about 5-10 seconds to fly down to the ground level.

I was trying to find a list of all the minions and guardians available to players through spells, talents and glpyhs (not from items) and ended up creating one.

As of 6.0.2, with the multistrike implemented into the game, pets gain the owner's multistrike as well.

After some tests, both with the gargoyle and the normal ghoul pet, it seems they have like twice the multistrike as the owner, having around 20% of their attacks, when i have only 11%.

Not sure if it's true, or just incorrect proc chance, but they do multistrike a lot. The Gargoyle Strike's multistrike shot seems to be a smaller ball, instead of the big one.
