Ghostly Councilors will cast Soul Blast on random targets, dealing moderate damage

Councilors will attempt to heal their allies with Dark Mending, which should be interrupted

Ghostly Retainers will cast Soul Blade on random targets, dealing moderate upfront damage and leaving a dispellable DoT effect that lasts 30 seconds

When fighting multiple Retainers, healers should prioritize dispelling players with more than one Soul Blade debuff

Ghostly Protectors will cast Sacrifice Soul about 20-30 seconds into fighting them

Sacrifice Soul buffs all of the Protector's allies to take 75% reduced damage for 15 seconds

During the Sacrifice Soul buff, the Protector himself will take 200% additional damage

Sacrifice SoulSacrifice SoulnotSacrifice SoulLady Velandras Ravencrest

Velandras will attack the tank with melee and Strike Down attacks, resulting in moderate to heavy tank damage

Tanks should use Active Mitigation for each Strike Down to reduce their incoming damage

She will also cast Glaive Toss at random non-tank targets

This deals moderate damage to the target and will bounce to other nearby players

Ranged DPS/healers should stay spread out to avoid chaining Glaive Toss damage

Mythic DifficultyStrike DownSacrifice SoulLord Etheldrin Ravencrest

Etheldrin will attack random targets with Spirit Blast, dealing moderate Shadow damage if successful

Spirit Blast can be interrupted

Etheldrin will also frequently debuff non-tank players with Soul Echoes

Two seconds after receiving the debuff, the player will begin dropping ghostly versions of themselves at their current location

This occurs once every second for 10 seconds, resulting in 11 echoes

After 4 seconds, a Soul Echo detonates, dealing moderate damage to nearby players

The affected player should stutter-step out of the Soul Echoes' effect as they spawn, and keep moving until the debuff fades

Try to avoid placing Soul Echoes on other players

Amalgam of Souls Tips & Strategy

Targeted!

Move away from the Swirling Scythe

Amalgam of SoulsSwirling Scythe

When the cast completes, the Amalgam of Souls will throw a Swirling Scythe at the player's initial location

Players have approximately two to three seconds (depending on their range from the boss) to react by moving out of the way

The Swirling Scythe will deal moderate damage if it strikes any player when it 'lands', and will knock them back

The scythe will persist for 30 seconds, and will continue to damage and knock back any player that moves into it

When targeted, immediately move about 8 yards away to avoid taking any damage

Soul Echoes

There is a two-second "arming period" during which the affected player should move away from other players

The debuffed player will then begin spawning Soul Echoes at their location every second

These Soul Echoes will last for 4 seconds, then detonate, dealing moderate Shadow damage to all nearby players

Players targeted by Soul Echoes should run to the edge of the room and drop their echoes away from other party members

Reap Soul

Players should never be in front of Amalgam of Souls for Reap Soul

The boss does not move while casting Reap Soul, so even the tank can dodge the ability

Non-tank players who are struck by Reap Soul will very likely die

Tanks will take near-fatal damage, even through Active Mitigation

Always watch for the large spell effect and move out of it

BloodlustHeroismTime Warp

Keep the Amalgam of Souls facing away from the party

Stay close to the boss and run through him for Reap Soul, then move back so he doesn't spin

If you fail to move out of Reap Soul, use a powerful cooldown to mitigate its damage

If targeted by Swirling Scythe, move away from the area

If targeted by Soul Echoes, keep moving, and try not to drop Soul Echoes on other players' locations

Stay behind the Amalgam of Souls at all times to avoid dying to Reap Soul

If the party executes the boss's mechanics correctly, there will be only moderate tank healing to do

If the tank does not move out of Reap Soul, heavy tank healing will be required

Players struck by Swirling Scythe or Soul Echoes explosions will take spiky damage

If targeted by Soul Echoes, keep moving, and try not to drop Soul Echoes on other players' locations

Stay behind the Amalgam of Souls at all times to avoid dying to Reap Soul

Heroic DifficultyCall Souls

This spell draws out 7 Restless Souls from the edges of the encounter area

They will be untargetable/out of line-of-sight until they pass beyond the ghostly barrier around the edge of the room

The Restless Souls move slowly toward the Amalgam of Souls, and use no abilities

Restless Souls can be rooted, slowed, stunned, and knocked back

SoulgorgeSoul BurstSoulgorge

Players should kill the Restless Souls as quickly as possible

There is nothing to tank or heal during this phase so tanks and healers should contribute

Once all the Restless Souls are dead, the party can use the remaining time to DPS the Amalgam of Souls

Rook Spiderlings are buffed with Soul Venom, causing their melee attacks to occasionally inflict their target with a DoT effect

Tanks should be sure to pick the Rook Spiderlings up quickly after they are aggroed by party members

Soul Venom is a Magic debuff and can be dispelled; healers should prioritize the tank with high stacks, then players who are in danger of dying

The Rook Spinner has high health but deals only melee damage

Mythic DifficultyInternal RuptureSoul VenomInternal Rupture

Players with no stacks of Soul Venom will receive 1 additional stack from Internal Rupture

Players with at least 1 stack of Soul Venom will receive 5 additional stacks from Internal Rupture

Players with high stacks of Soul Venom (above 20) will receive 10 additional stacks from Internal Rupture

Risen Arcanists cast Arcane Blitz at random players; successful casts will grant the Arcanist a stacking 50% damage buff

Interrupt as many Arcane Blitz casts as possible

Some Risen Arcanists have Arcane Minion pets

Arcane Minions teleport to their target with Phased Explosion, dealing heavy damage to nearby players after 4 seconds

Risen Archers Shoot random targets, and cast Arrow Barrage at a random player

Arrow Barrage deals heavy damage to players in its cone area of effect, but the Archer is stationary during the cast, so players should side-step to stop taking damage

Risen Companion attacks a random target with Bloodthirsty Leap, dealing heavy damage to all players within 10 yards and applying a stacking DoT

Players must not stack while fighting the Risen Companion, as the damage will quickly become unhealable if Bloodthirsty Leap damage splashes to more targets

Risen Scouts activate Knife Dance, dealing moderate party-wide damage every second for 5 seconds

Soul-Torn Champions target the tank with Bonebreaking Strike, a large cone attack that stuns affected players for 4 seconds

Tanks should face the Champion away from the party and side-step the Bonebreaking Strike

Commander Shemdah'sohn

Commander Shemdah'sohn is essentially a higher-health Soul-Torn Champion

Shemdah'sohn's only attack is the Bonebreaking Strike

Tanks should face Commander Shemdah'sohn away from the party and side-step the Bonebreaking Strike

This pack also includes a Risen Arcanist, a Risen Archer, and a Risen Scout

The most challenging part of this ambush is the surprise of it; healers should save at least one CD during the previous pack to use here

Illysanna Ravencrest Tips & StrategyIllysanna RavencrestBrutal Glaive

Brutal Glaive will bounce to other nearby players, dealing the same initial damage and leaving the DoT

Ranged DPS and healers should stay spread out around the platform to avoid splashing Brutal Glaive damage

Players with the Brutal Glaive DoT should use a defensive cooldown to mitigate some of its damage

Healers should focus extra attention on Brutal Glaive targets

Dark Rush

The targeted players receive a red arrow over their heads as well as the Dark Rush debuff

After 6 seconds, Illysanna will rush to each of the marked players, leaving a Blazing Trail in her path

Standing in the Blazing Trail deals moderate periodic damage

The three marked players should stack together to limit the amount of space covered in Blazing Trail fire

The targets should then move away from that location quickly to avoid taking too many ticks of Blazing Trail damage

Vengeful Shear

Unless the tank is protected by Active Mitigation, Vengeful Shear will leave a debuff, increasing incoming damage

The Vengeful Shear debuff can stack, leading to near-fatal or fatal Vengeful Shear damage

Tanks should always put up Active Mitigation for each cast of Vengeful Shear

Vengeful Shear occurs approximately every 15 seconds

During this time, Illysanna will target random players with Eye Beams

Any player is a valid target, including the tank

Targeted players will have the "fixate" red eyes over their head and receive the Eye Beams debuff

Illysanna will then chase that player with Eye Beams for 12 seconds, leaving patches of Felblazed Ground in the player's wake

The targeted player should quickly react by moving to the edges of the room and kiting the fire where it will not impact other players

Soul-torn Vanguard

The Soul-Torn Vanguard enters the encounter area on the right, near the gate

The Vanguard's only ability is Bonecrushing Strike

This is cone attack that deals heavy damage and stuns players in front of the Vanguard

Tanks must point the Vanguard away from the party so no players are stunned

Because the Vanguard is stationary while casting Bonecrushing Strike, the tank should side-step out of it

Eye Beams

Use an Active Mitigation ability for each Vengeful Shear in phase 1

Move Illysanna away from nearby Blazing Trail patches

Taunt the Soul-Torn Vanguard when it spawns at the start of phase 2

When the Vanguard begins casting Bonecrushing Strike, side-step the attack to avoid the stun

Move out of Felblazed Ground

If targeted for Dark Rush, stack up near other targeted players to create smaller Blazing Trails

Ranged DPS/healers should stay otherwise spread out to avoid splashing Brutal Glaive damage

If struck by Brutal Glaive, use a personal damage-reduction cooldown to mitigate some of the DoT damage

During phase 2, prioritize killing the Soul-Torn Vanguard quickly

Never be in front of the Soul-Torn Vanguard to avoid the Bonecrushing Strike stun

If targeted by Eye Beams, move to the side of the room to drop Felblazed Ground out of the way of other players

Vengeful Shear does heavy tank damage even if the tank's Active Mitigation is used properly

If the tank gains the Vengeful Shear debuff, you may need to use a cooldown to keep the tank alive for the next Vengeful Shear

Players struck by Brutal Glaive will need additional single-target heals/HoTs

If targeted for Dark Rush, stack up near other targeted players to create smaller Blazing Trails

Stay otherwise spread out to avoid splashing Brutal Glaive damage

During phase 2, the tank will take moderate damage from the Soul-Torn Vanguard

If targeted by Eye Beams, move to the side of the room to drop Felblazed Ground out of the way of other players

Heroic & Mythic Difficulty

The Risen Arcanist teleports into the encounter area, appearing on the left side near the balcony

The Arcanist will cast Arcane Blitz at random targets

Arcane Blitz deals moderate damage to the target and buffs the Arcanist with a stack of Arcane Blitz

Several stacks of Arcane Blitz can cause subsequent Arcane Blitz hits to deal near-fatal damage

Players should interrupt Arcane Blitz as frequently as possible

Smashspite the HatefulBoulder CrushBoulder CrushNotable Trash MobsWrathguard BladelordWyrmtongue ScavengerWyrmtongue TricksterBloodscent Felhound

The Bladelord's Brutal Assault deals extreme tank damage in four large hits over 2 seconds

This cast cannot be interrupted, and the Bladelord will still move while channeling the spell

Slowing the Bladelord during Brutal Assault can allow the tank to run away out of range and avoid the damage

Stunning the Bladelord as Brutal Assault is cast is the best method of stopping the damage; wait until the channel begins if possible, so that the Bladelord does not simply re-cast it when the stun wears off

If these methods are not available, tanks and healers should use strong cooldowns to keep the tank alive during Brutal Assault

When Wrathguard Bladelords fall below 25% health, they will Enrage, dealing additional damage

This makes the already-potent Brutal Assaults extremely dangerous

Brutal AssaultEnrage"Drink" Ancient Potion

After casting "Drink" Ancient Potion, the Scavenger will gain one of three effects at random

Indigestion causes the Scavenger to intermittently breathe a cone of fire, which deals moderate damage

Players should move out of this cone, and tanks should try to face the Scavengers away from the party

Hyperactive causes the Scavenger to spin in rapid circles, causing any players he collides with to become Bowled Over!

After a brief period of spinning, the Hyperactive Scavenger becomes Dizzy, and is stunned for 3 seconds

When Dizzy fades, the Scavenger will begin spinning again

Frenzy Potion causes the Scavenger to grow very large, attack 5 times more frequently, and to deal 5% more damage each second until killed

This is the most threatening outcome, especially if the pack of trash also contains a Wrathguard Bladelord

Players should prioritize killing a Frenzy Potion-affected Scavenger over the others

Throw Priceless ArtifactBowled Over!Felspite DominatorFel Bat Pup

Felspite Dominators deal moderate melee damage to the tank

Dominators will occasionally cast Sic Bats! while targeting a random non-tank player

Sic Bats! causes all Fel Bat Pups within 15 yards to attack the targeted player

Mythic DifficultyFelfrenzyFelfrenzyFelfrenzyFelfrenzySic Bats!BolsterSmashspite Tips & StrategySmashspite the HatefulBrutal Haymaker

Brutal Haymaker deals extremely heavy damage to the tank and consumes all of Smashspite's energy

The tank should use powerful cooldowns to mitigate the damage

The Brutal Haymaker debuff applied to the tank increases incoming damage

Healers should use their most powerful single-target healing skills to recover the tank's health during this debuff

An unmitigated melee attack will grant Smashspite 10 Energy

If the tank is using, for example, a 30% damage-reduction ability, then melee attacks will generate 7 Energy

If the tank Dodges or Parries, or if Smashspite Misses, a melee attack, Smashspite generates Energy

Tanks should try to maintain consistently high uptime on damage-reduction abilities such as Active Mitigation in order to slow Smashspite's rate of Energy gain

Avoidance is better than mitigation for the purpose of slowing Smashspite's Energy gain

While kiting can work, it is annoying for the melee DPS and should be avoided unless necessary

Earthshaking StompFel BatFel Vomit

The Fel Bat will mark its Fel Vomit target with a green laser beam

After 6 seconds, the Fel Bat will vomit along the line created by the laser beam, extending past the player to the edge of the balcony

This creates a permanent line of Fel Vomitus pools on the ground

Fel Vomitus deals light to moderate periodic damage to players standing in its area of effect

The targeted player should position so that as little of the platform as possible is affected by the Fel Vomitus

Fel VomitusEarthshaking StompFel Vomitus

Use Active Mitigation and minor cooldowns to keep a high uptime on damage-reduction abilities so Smashspite gains Energy slowly

Use a major cooldown when Smashspite reaches 100 Energy to mitigate Brutal Haymaker damage

Move Smashspite away from nearby pools of Fel Vomitus so the melee DPS do not stand in it

Avoid standing in Fel Vomitus

If targeted by a Fel Bat's Fel Vomit, move to the front or edge of the room to drop your Fel Vomitus line out of the way of other players

Avoid standing in Fel Vomitus

Once Fel Vomitus is present, position yourself so that Earthshaking Stomp will not knock you back into a Fel Vomitus pool

Tanks will take heavy damage from Smashspite's melee attacks, and extreme damage from Brutal Haymaker

Use your raid CDs for Earthshaking Stomps in the latter half of the fight, when players are likely to also take Fel Vomitus damage while repositioning after the knockback

If targeted by a Fel Bat's Fel Vomit, move to the front or edge of the room to drop your Fel Vomitus line out of the way of other players

Avoid standing in Fel Vomitus

Hateful Gaze

Early in the fight, and every 25 seconds thereafter, Smashspite will target the furthest-away player with Hateful Gaze

After 6 seconds, Smashspite will rush towards the targeted player with Hateful Charge

Hateful Charge deals heavy damage to the first player that Smashspite encounters along his path

The player struck by Hateful Charge will receive a debuff that doubles all subsequent Hateful Charge damage for 1 minute

Hateful ChargeHateful Charge

Coordinated groups can make use of the targeting mechanism to ensure that a different player is targeted each time

Or, players who are not affected with the Hateful Charge debuff can stand between Smashspite and the Hateful Gaze target to soak the Hateful Charge for them

Risen Lancers will choose a ranged target for Raven's Dive

Players near the large spell graphic should move away quickly to avoid the Raven's Dive damage and stun

Risen Swordsmen will attack the tank with Coup de Grace, dealing extremely heavy damage

Tanks should use a powerful cooldown for each Coup de Grace

Healers should be prepared to quickly top the tank back up from Coup de Grace damage

Raven's DiveCoup de GraceLord Ravencrest Tips & StrategyIn Patch 7.2, Dantalionax's Dark Obliteration will rotate in a random direction rather than only going counter-clockwise.Lord Kur'talos RavencrestLatosius

Kur'talos will periodically attack the tank with Unerring Shear, dealing extremely heavy damage and leaving a DoT effect

The tank should use a strong cooldown for each Unerring Shear cast, and healers should quickly top the tank back up

Unerring Shear persists for the remainder of the encounter, but it does not stack

He will occasionally throw a Whirling Blade at a random player

The Whirling Blade will float back and forth between that player's location and the boss's location at the time the spell was cast

Whirling Blade deals moderate damage and knocks back any player it damages

Tanks should move Kur'talos away from the blade when it spawns, and ranged players should move away from its endpoint to avoid taking damage

Shadow BoltDark Blast

Dark Blast creates a straight line from Latosius's current position, through the middle of the encounter area, to the other side of the room

When the cast completes, all players remaining in this line will take heavy damage and be knocked back

Players should move out of the line quickly to avoid taking the damage

DantalionaxLegacy of the Ravencrest buffLegacy of the Ravencrest buffShadow Bolt VolleyCloud of Hypnosis

The first Shadow Bolt Volley of the phase occurs before Legacy of the Ravencrest is applied, and deals near-fatal damage

Players should use personal defensive cooldowns if they are on low health, and healers should use powerful CDs

Once the Legacy of the Ravencrest buff is applied, Shadow Bolt Volley deals light to moderate damage

Cloud of Hypnosis creates a small, slowly-moving patch of gas near a random ranged target

Players entering the patch of gas will be put to sleep until the effect is dispelled, they take damage, or the cloud wanders away

The sleep is dispellable by healers

Ranged DPS and healers should stay near the edges of the room so that Clouds of Hypnosis do not spawn in melee range

Dreadlord's GuileImage of Latosius

Each Image of Latosius will fire off a Dark Obliteration cast in turn

The Dark Obliteration, like the Dark Blast before, deals heavy damage to any players standing in its area of effect and knocks them back

Because there are several Dark Obliterations in short succession, players struck by one are likely to be knocked into another and may take fatal damage

One Image of Latosius is chosen at random to begin the sequence, which will either move in a counter-clockwise or clockwise direction around the room

Players must dodge the Dark Obliteration casts by running in the correct cirection to keep ahead of, or behind of, the Dark Obliteration sequence

While running, players should avoid crossing into Cloud of Hypnosis patches

Healers should quickly dispel any player affected by a Cloud of Hypnosis during Dreadlord's Guile

About every 20 seconds during phase 2, when not in Dreadlord's Guile, Dantalionax will afflict a random target with Stinging Swarm

The Stinging Swarm deals moderate to heavy damage to the affected player

The knockback is very likely to cause the player to disturb the spider eggs, causing more Rook Spiderlings to spawn

Ideally, tanks should place their backs against a wall in an area free of eggs to avoid spawning Rook Spiderlings

The tank should quickly pick up any Rook Spiderlings that are released from disturbed eggs

Rupturing Poison

Healers may need to provide emergency healing for players caught in the cone unawares

Kelorn will periodically throw Disorienting Gas at a ranged player

Error in the first section of the guide, the achievements listed are from the Eye of Azshara dungeon.

Comment by jjanchan

What a great guide! I appreciate the detailed explanations of the encounters.

I don't know if you would happen to have this information, but if so, it may be worthwhile including in your guide what Key of Kalyndras does and where it can be used in the dungeon.

Comment by aellos

haha you used to scrawl me with your fel tome. that has to be one of the funniest quest names ive seen

Comment by 1699970

Just saying that Stinging Swarm can in fact hit tanks, also twice in a row. Just witnessed it myself as a Guardian.

Comment by daadaadaaren

i believe that for the amalgram of souls portion of the guide an entire section on the adds spawned is missing, those that buff boss' nova if they reach him, and that are needed for the mythic achievement

Comment by swifty2016

this is a good guide but is there one for key stone?

Comment by Anatta

Some additional notes from running Black Rook Hold on Mythic +10 with a group at item levels below 870. We had the Tyrannical affix, so I'll focus on bosses.

Amalgam of Souls
The Soul Burst explosion after it summons ghosts deals deadly damage even if no ghosts reach the boss. Everyone should use damage reduction or immunity abilities when it's cast. There should be no other damage taken by the party at that time, so it's easy to make sure everyone is at full health too.

Illysanna Ravencrest
Brutal Glaive does fairly significant damage, but you should generally save your defensive cooldowns. Blessing of Protection is great for removing the DoT if you have it available in your party.

Dark Rush is the most dangerous ability of the fight. It hits moderately hard and the Blazing Trail left behind is lethal (note that it ticks every 1 second in mythic, for much higher damage, and we seemed to often get two ticks at once). You are likely to die before you can take the few steps to run out of the fire. We found the best way to avoid it was to start running before she does the attack, that way the fire will usually miss you entirely. Dark Rush is the best thing to use defensive cooldowns for as just a second within the fire will often kill you, but be aware you'll likely not have a cooldown ready for each cast so judicious use is needed.

By comparison the air phase is relaxed. Just be sure to interrupt the Arcanist add so their buff isn't stacked too high.

Smashspite the Hateful
The party will need to work together to deal with Hateful Charge. As the Earthshaking Stomp comes so soon after charge, the target of charge will need to use a defensive cooldown so that they can be healed up enough in time. Coordination is needed so that defensive cooldowns aren't wasted by someone else intercepting the charge.

The tank takes extremely heavy damage after Brutal Haymaker (+75% damage taken on mythic) and should use their strongest cooldowns to counter it. Remember that it's triggered by the boss reaching 100 energy, so watch that for your cue. We had two Haymakers in our kill, so used the tank's biggest cooldown on the first and the healer's cooldowns on the second. Because tank cooldowns are so important to haymaker, we never had the tank soaking any of the Hateful Charges.

Lord Ravencrest
The first phase has high tank damage thanks to Unerring Shear. Tank cooldowns should be used there, as tank damage is fairly low the rest of the fight. We also moved the boss every time he threw out a Whirling Blade to avoid it hitting melee and tank when it returned.

The most deadly part of the fight is the first Shadow Bolt Volley at the start of fighting the demon. Much like the explosion on the first boss in the instance, everyone will need to use defensive cooldowns to survive. The healer may also need to use cooldowns to get everyone to full health.

Although the Stinging Swarm was hitting for around a million damage a second, with our buffed health it wasn't as deadly as it sounds. We had everyone stood near the boss so it was easy to switch targets.

As a fun note, Dark Obliteration was hitting for over 10 million damage. So definitely dodge that.

Comment by Hijara

I would also like to mention that in Mythic difficulty the speed in which the Dark Obliteration spell is hitting is greatly increased from normal and heroic version. You will have a lot less time to run and dodge the spell and should already start running during the cast of Dreadlord's Guile.

Comment by Thechieftain

Rook Spiderling death triggers Bursting thank god Fel Bat Pup does not.

Comment by Dannell

A word of warning: if you're back-filling this dungeon well after Legion (e.g., a LVL 80 toon in Khaz Algar), do not kill Latosius first!

Should you do so, and Kur'talos is still alive, Dantalionax will not spawn. Instead, Kur'talos will remain alive, but unkillable. Meanwhile, Latosius' body will despawn and respawn randomly for a while in various places around the room.

In a sense this is funny. Kur'talos will ignore you as you whack at him with your weapons and spells.

Basically, you messed up. There's no resetting this fight as you can't leave the room, you can't die yourself, and Kur'talos won't attack you. You may as well hearth out and try again after the dungeon resets. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Lesson learned!
