many ppl say that frost is better for pvp, and pve, all lies, same goes for fire.
it all depends on your play style, your equipement, and your skill vs a class.

about frost:
basicly, with meduim +damage gear, with frost, u wont be able to kill a class that can heal easly, most of the times u will loose, if they know what they are doing that is. but u will own mellee classes.
with high +damage and frost, it will be easier to kill healers, tou is still harder then melee.
about pve... so much crap i see here...
frost dosent have the best mana efficiency, only with frost channeling. frost got so much reputation as the best for pve, because of molten core, and onyxia being imune to fire (most of the mobs this is)or at least, have a huge fire resistance. lets take BWL for example, im a fire mage, im always in the top 3, most of the time as first in damage meters (synced ofc) only loose for frost mages (that are outdamaged by all hunters and rogues) during firemaw, ebonroc, lootgore and nefarian. tou i still keep meself in the top 3, where hunters pass, other mage is right behinde me, or in front sometimes, fire mage aswell.

In AQ frost will show how it is infact when compared to fire, even in pve, if you are fire, and run oom, even with ruby, citrine and evocation (pots if u use) then you really should reroll... specially if you alliance.

for pvp, fire, its the most damaging of all, with frost.... well u will see for sure "bigger" numbers, and that drawns all ppl, but they forget ( or dont know... sigh) about fire crits... frost has 100% +damage, fire has 110%, AND a very nice propriety, ignite stacks, and renews, that is why 2 firemages working together will do the biggest damage you can attain =P

imagine: you crit for 1k, 400 will be a dot, after 1 tick (200 damage) you get another crit, it will stack, and renew, so 400+400, and since it restarts, now it will have a tick of 400, crit again, and a tick for 600, so far i had a tick of 2.2k in kazzak togheter with other firemage, we kept renewing our ignites. wich will give us a much higher damage then frost can ever dream off... (this calcultaions made based on always being a 1k crit) i dont have AP, scorch crits fore 900+, lower fireball hits so far are 1.090, without trinkets.

but after all, it all depends on your playstile and gear. but plz, dont say barbarities such as frost having more damage then fire... only problem with fire is resitances idd... but that will be fixed in 1.9. (not quite as much as i would like, but still... =P )

most ppl that post here will never see tier 2 anyway =PP

about netherwind, is not a bad set, but, cause blizzy hate us, we still benefict more from not-set items,i have 5/8 nw at, but only use 3/8, and dont think i will get more, since it will be outdated when 1.9 comes out, since AQ set is a LOT better, and has -resistances on it (wich should be put in nw aswell... else what reason to get nw? ^^ )

ppl that base on movies: plz... from days of taping, they only show the best crits, the lucky events, ect, sorry for uber long post, but i needed to explain all, so it's easier to understand =P

fire does more dmg. Combustion, talisman of emphermal power, blastwave is with some arcane explosion will kill more alliance than you can count. For netherwind v.s arcanist; personally i think every single mage should grab as much +dmg gear as possible.
Even that i have some netherwind now i never even touched arcanist. Give me gloves of the hypnotic flam and mana igniting cord not arcanist belt and gloves. A mages main job is to deal as much dmg as possible. That is what i try to do :)

PVP: well ill just use my zandalarian hero charm and my mind quickening jam..and kill.. well..whatever is in my target with max 2 hits.. trinkets abuser? well.. what other choice to we mages have.

PVE: well..with my dmg gear.. i have +492 dmg.. its no arcanist..and 2 NW items.. and tbh..ill rather have this.. cuz with mixed items u will pull aggro on bosses in bwl.. not becuz u do the most dmg.. but bcuz u hit the hardest, i dont do the most dmg bcuz my mana pool is $%^& for pve

so i rather recommend the entire NW set for all those BWL mages... and the rest. get rings with critt.. get the staff of shadowflame.. thats even more imba then the biggest +dmg items

btw.. atm i use my dmg gear.. i never do below 920 dmg with my frostbolts.. and never below 1000 with curse of elementals on a mob

First it ll sometimes take longer for a frost mage 2 kill an enemy but i m frost and when my target is frozen i have a great chance of critting it.
I crit 2k frostbolt i cast faster then firemage and have an elemental thats also +500 minimum.

A firemage with full NW critted me ones 3k. thats cool but i owned him also with this crit. got 2 Frostbolt crits and he was down. ( counterspell - fireward - ice shield ) also we own more easely for mele there is no difference anymore like firemages have AOE scatter shot.

So all depends of your play style

Okay, here's the layout on the mage class:

It's true that fire mages own in pvp....every 3 minutes. The vast majority of fire mages go PoM/Pyro, leaving that 3 min c/d to wrestle through. Being that fire mages have a lot more casting time, it's harder for them to keep a fast pace in the event that something gets resisted.

Frost mages are like the jack of all trades; their PvP capabities are very versatile, but they rely heavily on instas with c/d's far longer than fireblast. However, if one is specced deep into the frost tree, your target will often be frozen to the ground by SOME form of spell or talent, leaving the additional 50%crit rate/100% bonus to crit damage wide open.

So fire mages have longer casting time and less versatility, but make no mistake, they can/will own any other class if their PoM is up.

Frost mages rely heavily on instas, Feral druids will be harder to beat, and if something gets resisted, they could be in a world of hurt. However, frost mages have many defensive capabilities should something go wrong, and frost nova/ice lance can be lethal.

In the end it all comes down to how well you know how to play your class.

Do you actually have a mage? Like all AoE moves, DB doesnt do much damage, because its capabale of hitting multiple targets.

But, I would say its more versatile. I'd rather have the ability to stun an oppenent every 20seconds than an instant pyro every 3 minutes.

lol wtf im 56 i crit 2,4k pyro max, 1,5k without any buffs, 1,1-1,2 hits, and i got PoM. so instant 2,4k... well u can kill mobs 2 lvls higher than u b4 they come to u xD

Netherwind isn't the best set for mages.

edit: When I say set, I mean just a full set of gear, not the blizzard definition of set, ie: set of netherwind.

As a mage, my job on raids, in pvp, and instances, is to do damage. Thus, in order to achieve this goal, maximum +damage gear is the best thing to acquire in order to maximize your potential damage output.

I have near full set of this, and another mage in my guild has full set. With my damage gear on, and his full set of netherwind on, I still outdamage him by 30-40%.

So, its not all its cut out to be.

I could be wrong but I think since this robe isn't in the game yet these stats are wrong and not the recently revamped netherwind stats. My guess is they'll change the fire damage to full on plus damage and add more stat points. They may also add some +mana or something because for something that (presumably) requires a full BWL clearing even with +27 damage it's hardly better than Robe of Volatile Power which can drop off the first boss in MC.

Some mage love, or another depressing "upgrade"? We shall see...

This isn't as good as it should be. Robe of volatile power has higher damage and crit chance. The stats are nice, but the plus to damage and crit should be much better, after all it is supposed to be the best ^&*!ing set in the game......

Onyxia drops tier 2 epic helms, so it's unlikely she drops tier 2 robes as well. Consider the Darkmaster of Scholomance drops all set helms and the General drops all set chests. My only guess would be ragnaros, if it exists at all currently. That leads to the question, however, what would mobs in Blackwing Lair drop? That instance is supposedly going to be harder.

i made some fast calculations to find out what the maximum a mage would be able to get in raw power and +spelldmg. this is what i came up with:
Enigma set (head, chest legs, boots and shoulders) + netherwind belt, gloves and wrists + cloak of the broodlord + staff of shadow flame with +30 spelldmg enchant + touch of chaos + zandalarian hero charms and talisman of ephemeral power + band of forced concentration and mindtear band + choker of the firelord would give you a total of:

+890 spelldmg the first shot and decreasing by 35 each additioanl shot for 20 sec. (the toep will have lost its +spelldmg after 15 sec)

Some speculate over wearing 2 ZHCs, but the fact that it says "unique" on them makes me think that speculation is useless. howere this would give a mage +995 spell dmg, decreasing by 70 every shot after the first.

An arcane specced mage with presence of mind and arcane power unstable power would definately benefit the most from this gear, both pvp and pve

i made these calculations hastily so if i made any mistakes feel free to correct me.

Full Netherwind set

The tier 2 set used to drop in Molten Core but will now drop in Blackwing Lair when it's released somewhere in the future. Still, Ragnaros drops tier 2 leggins and Onyxia drops tier 2 heads atm. Netherwind set is tier 2 for those who didnt know.

I'm not a very experienced player, had the game for like 2 months and I'm now lvl 50 (mage).

The netherwind set has until now been then best set for mages, but how about this new enigma set? Is it better?

I've done some calculations:

8 piece netherwind:

Armor: 666

Stats:

Intellect: 159 (2385 mana and +1.59% crit)
Spirit: 69 (13+(69/4)mana/2 sec)
Stamina: 116 (1160 hitpoints)

Resistances:

Arcane: 10
Fire: 40
Frost: 10
Nature: 10
Shadow: 30

Passive:

+DMG:204 dmg
+CRIT:+3% (+1.59 = 4.59% crit)
+HIT:
+mana/5sec: 12

Set bonuses:

3 pieces: Reduces the threat generated by your Scorch, Arcane Missiles, Fireball, and Frostbolt spells.
5 pieces: Increases the radius of Arcane Explosion, Flamestrike, and Blizzard by 25%.
8 pieces: 10% chance after casting Arcane Missiles, Fireball, or Frostbolt that your
next spell with a casting time under 10 seconds cast instantly.

8 piece Enigma/Netherwind(gloves, belt and bracers):

Armor: 699

Stats:

Intellect: 151 (+2265 mana and +1.51% crit)
Spirit: 64 (13+(64/4) mana/2 sec)
Stamina: 139 (1390 hitpoints)

Resistances:

Shadow: 20

Passive:

+DMG:226
+CRIT:+4% (+1.51% = 5.51%)
+HIT: +2%
+mana/5sec:17
Reduced magic resistance on target: 30

Set bonuses:

3 pieces:Your Blizzard spell has a 30% chance to be uninterruptible.
5 pieces:Grants +5% increased spell hit chance for 20 sec when one of your spells is resisted.

As you can see the netherwind set has more mana and more spirit, but the enigma/nertherwind set has more stamina, armor, mana/5sec, crit, hit and dmg.
The netherwind set has also more resistances and you also get the 8 piece set bonus.

As for the 8 piece bonus i'd say its mostly for pvp, and this is supposed to be a pve set, for pvp you can get warlord set etc. And the + hit chance and the -30 resist on target the enigma set gives you is very useful IMO in MC/BWL/AQ because you fight mobs higher lvl than you and you often get resists. A resist is a TOTAL waste of mana, so what im trying to say is that the +2% hit is worth the loss of 120 mana (witch the netherwind gives you). And you also get almost +1% crit more than netherwind with this enigma set. I guess the adittional 22dmg you get also comes in handy :P

IMO the enigma/netherwind is better than the full netherwind set, but then im not very experienced so plz if u disagree, say so.
