Fishing Achievements Guide - Wrath of the Lich King Classic

Fishing has a lot of achievements that you can do in Azeroth, Outland, and Northrend, including the meta-achievement

. This will earn you the title to show off your fishing prowess to all. Most Fishing achievements contribute toward this goal.
This guide covers all Fishing Achievements available in Wrath to the Lich King Classic, including tips for completing all the quests needed to earn your title. It also lists those few achievements that don't contribute to the meta-achievement but you'll probably want to do anyway.
As an important reminder, Achievements are not accountwide in Wrath of the Lich King.
If you want to get any meta-achievements, you'll have to do all the sub-achievements on a single character.
Meta Achievement: Accomplished Angler
熟練釣手
is the meta achievement that will earn the title , consisting of 15 individual achievements. Most of the sub-achievements have prerequisites of their own, so we will go over each of these in turn.
In terms of overall difficulty, this is one of the more time consuming meta-achievements in game, many of which you won't necessarily have earned by default. Don't be disappointed if you don't already have credit for fish you've already caught (unless they're currently in your inventory). Mostly you will only get credit for achievements that involved completing quests (such as

, which tracks daily quests you've completed in Outland) or if you've already won the Booty Bay Fishing Derby for

.
Since you can only do this on one character, pick a stealth class if you have that option.
Many of these quests are much easier to do if you can stealth, and Mage Invisibility won't be good enough for the tasks that are needed.

is a good news/bad news achievement.
Good news: this counts
all
items you fish, not just fish.
While you're in areas that are too low for your fishing level, you're going to catch a lot of junk -- stuff like

, etc. If you catch something -- anything -- it counts as a fished item. If you catch two items in a cast, such as catching a

, you will be credited with two items for this count.
Bad news: any fish you've caught earlier than WoTLK pre-patch were not counted and you're starting over.
This sounds like a bigger problem than it is, because trust me, you're going to be catching a lot more than 1,000 items as you work on this achievement. A lot, lot more.
There are a number of pre-achievements you'll pass through on your way to

There is no reason to work specifically toward this achievement if you're working toward .
You'll get it as a matter of course of fulfilling all the other achievements in this series, so don't go out of your way to get this one.
Deadliest Catch

What if you've already done this with your raid group back in the day? Bad news -- the system didn't save that information, so you're going to have to do this again. Fortunately, it's not that difficult to do now; you just need to know the procedure for how to do this without having to do an entire raid. You don't even have to kill
加茲蘭卡
to complete the achievement.
Getting the Lure the Easy Way
You need to acquire a
臭泥魚誘餌
.
These are not Bind on Pickup, so if you're lucky you'll find someone selling them on the Auction House, or you may find one hidden away in your inventory or guild bank. If you already have the
臭泥魚誘餌
, you can save yourself a very large step in this process. You can also look for any
祖利安臭泥魚
while you're shopping the Auction House or your inventory; you'll need 5x to load the lure. If you can't find a
臭泥魚誘餌
, you'll need to get one while you're in ZG.
Step 1 - Form a Raid
To enter ZG, you need to be in a raid group.
You can just group with a friend and convert to raid; your friend doesn't even have to be with you. Only one person can fish up
加茲蘭卡
per raid instance.
Unlike bosses in other raid instances, you are saved to the instance the second you summon up

; you do not actually have to kill him to be saved.
(Untested tip: One commenter back in the day stated that he could start a raid with a level 1 bank alt, invite someone else and make them raid leader, then log to his main character, have the second person pass off raid leadership, and the other person could leave. This would leave you in a raid with yourself -- your main character and your level 1 bank alt. I have not tested this, but it might be interesting to give it a try).
However, you may wish to invite a few high-level friends, because
加茲蘭卡
is very difficult to kill alone for a fully-geared level 80, . You do not have to kill
加茲蘭卡
to fulfill the achievement, but
加茲蘭卡
can drop the
秘典:變烏龜術
, a desirable (and Bind on Equip/sellable) item for mages.
Step 2 - Enter ZG
Whether you have the
臭泥魚誘餌
or not, you will need to make your way to Pagle's Point, which is located in the upper right corner of ZG. If you're over level 70, most of the mobs in here will ignore you, and once you're 80, you can solo nearly all non-bosses in here. However, this is another place where being a stealth class makes everything easier. Otherwise, just try to take care to avoid any enemy NPCs as best you can.
Once you're inside, turn left and go downhill until you reach the lake. Jump down the waterfall, try to avoid any large fish and crocs, and head east, following the northern wall. This will lead you to Pagle's Point.
If you already have the
臭泥魚誘餌
, as you travel to Pagle's Point, keep an eye out for schools of
. You will need to fish up 5x

to load the lure.
Step 3 - Get the Lure the Hard Way
Skip this step if you already have
臭泥魚誘餌
.
If you still need the lure:
you'll need to pick up the low-level quest

, which you pick up from a
. This may not show up if you are higher level, as this is level 60 quest. Leave ZG the way you came, and go to
納特‧帕格
in Dustwallow Marsh. He's located at /way 58.6 60.0, southwest of Theramore Island. This is a very, very long detour, which is why it's a huge time savings if you can find the lure in advance.
Once you have done this, you can purchase a
臭泥魚誘餌
. Return to ZG, go back to Pagle's Point, and keep an eye out for schools of
. You will need to fish up 5x

to load the lure.
Step 4 - Summon Gahz'ranka
Now that you're at Pagle's Point and you have a fully loaded
臭泥魚誘餌
, it's time to do the deed. Use the
臭泥魚誘餌
to fish the waters off Pagle's Point to summon
加茲蘭卡
. Summoning
加茲蘭卡
fulfills the achievement. You can kill
加茲蘭卡
if you want but it's unnecessary at this point.
If you're alone, even if you're level 80, you may wish to consider removing all your gear to avoid repair bills. You can try to use an aggro dump to get away.
Fish Don't Leave Footprints

is to learn the ability to

, which you get from the item

. If you already know how to track fish, you'll automatically get credit for this achievement.
However, if you don't have this skill yet, the easiest way to get it is to combine this with the achievement
拾荒客
, which has you fishing out of junk schools.

is commonly found while fishing these junk nodes, so you can combine achievements for the win.
It's important to note that you don't generally fish up the journal itself -- you fish up boxes that can contain the journal. Be sure to open your fished-up boxes regularly.
Grand Master Fisherman

is another "gimme" achievement, in that you'll get this as a matter of course. You can be trained as a Grand Master at Fishing (350), so you'll get this one naturally as you level.

Master Angler of Azeroth
More than any other sub-achievement in this series,

will prevent more people from obtaining their title than any other. This achievement requires that you win either the
or the
. You must come in first to fulfill this achievement; runners-up need not apply.
Good news: if you've already won the
, you'll already have credit for this and you won't have to do it again.
For the rest of most people on your server, this will remain the hardest one to fulfill. Each event runs weekly (Kalu'ak Fishing Derby on Saturdays and
on Sundays), but each will only have a single winner. That's a maximum of two per week, with up to 104 per year for the entire server. And since people can and do win it more than once, or win both, that's a true maximum.
Out of the two, the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby has a more level playing field and cannot be dominated the way the STV Fishing Extravaganza can.

Mr. Pinchy's Magical Crawdad Box

One That Didn't Get Away

requires
catching
only one from the long list of rare fish, which means even if you have any of these in your inventory, you won't get credit for having caught it since none of them are Bind on Pickup. It also means buying them on the Auction House won't give you achievement credit.
These are all rare by-catches of other fish. For this reason, this one is best just to go about your normal fishing business and let it happen on its own.
If you do want to target them, here is the data you'll need to target these fish, including the minimum modified Fishing skill you'll need to avoid junk catches. The closer you are to that level, the better chances you have.
Remember: you only need one from this list.
The best thing to do if you want to get one is target fish in an area where you need to fish already, such as in Orgrimmar or Stormwind, or doing the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganzas every week.
We also include some recommended areas to catch these; these are all outdoor areas which, for the most part, don't have any sub-zones you need to target or avoid. Some are so narrow that some subzones need to be included.
Be sure to note whether you'll need to fish Inland or Coastal. For example, while both

The Coin Master

is actually a meta-achievement in itself, with three sub-achievements listed below. This involves fishing in the Dalaran Fountain to collect all the copper, silver, and gold coins:
The Dalaran Fountain is located in the Eventide, next to
瑪西亞‧切斯
at around /way 53 65.
Now imagine 30 other players fishing here, all trying to find their own bobber.
Just be thankful the Oversized Bobber hasn't been invented yet.
While you can fish in the Dalaran fountain from Fishing (1), it doesn't make a lot of sense to start trying for coins until you are at least Fishing (350), and you'll need a lot of +Fishing gear to hit the no-junk minimum of Fishing (525), where you won't be wasting casts getting
雜草
. This is an achievement where you'll want to use your very best bait. Save your
發光蟲
s for this.
The achievement is to fish up the coin, not just have it in your inventory.
The bad news is that, although the coins are not soulbound and can be traded, you won't get credit for the achievement if you didn't fish it up yourself. The good news is that you don't need to keep the coins. Discarding the coin will not take away that part of the achievement. However, you need to know the best way to dispose of coins. They'll take up a ton of bag space. Although the coins do stack, they only stack with a coin of the same name --

Copper Coins and Silver Coins are junk items which you can sell without fear. Both Copper and Silver Coins only sell for each, but at least you can sell them easily to

right at the fountain.
Gold Coins only sell for , but there is a much better use for them. If you throw a Gold Coin into the fountain, you'll get a buff called
幸運
that increases your chance of catching more coins for 2 minutes. In general, with high fishing skill, you'll get about 25% coins without the buff, but you'll get closer to 50% with the buff, so it doubles your chances of catching coins.
幸運
does not stack, either in terms of your odds of getting coins or in increasing time past 2 minutes.
If you throw in a second gold coin before the first
幸運
has expired, it resets the timer to 2 minutes. Throwing in two coins at once does not give you 4 minutes. Wait until the buff is off before throwing in another gold coin.
Unfortunately, what coins you get is entirely random, and you will continue to catch duplicates. This gets very frustrating once you're down to the wire of only needing a few of the coins out of the entire list. There doesn't seem to be any weighting to give preference to coins you've never caught before.
The Fishing Diplomat
垂釣外交官
involves fishing something up in both Orgrimmar and Stormwind. By default, one of these will be easy. It's the other that some players may find daunting.
The easiest (but most expensive) way is to faction change, but this is only practical if you were planning to do this anyway. Fish up in your friendly city before your switch factions, and then fish in the new friendly city after the change. You'll still get full credit. The achievement is to fish in each city, not to do it as a particular faction.
If that isn't an option, then you'll have to brave the other side's city. The Horde will have a much easier time doing this than the Alliance. One thing that helps here is that neither Orgrimmar nor Stormwind will be highly populated most of the time, since Dalaran is the new hub for this expansion.
Fishing Diplomat: Alliance There are only two places to fish inside Orgrimmar, and nowhere outside you can access that will give credit. The pool in the Valley of Honor is too deeply buried in the city, so don't even bother with that one. The one you want to target is located inside the Valley of Spirits, but even that is pretty far into the city. There is nowhere to do it without getting inside.
Orgrimmar isn't convenient to get to, but the easiest way is to take the boat to Theramore. If you have the flight point to Ratchet, so much the better. Travel up through the Barrens up along the eastern shore, being careful to avoid the Horde patrols near the bridge to Durotar. Keep going along this coast until you're almost into Azshara.
You will need to go into the western entrance of Orgrimmar (Barrens coordinates /way 57.7 45.4), where there is a large bridge into the city. There are also several guards at the bridge, so what you do now depends on your resources. You will get flagged the instant you set foot on the bridge.
Your welcoming committee awaits
There are seven guards on this bridge -- two at the start, one patrolling the bridge itself (she usually patrols on the north side), and four in the gate leading into the city. They are all level 75.
Classes with Stealth (Druids and Rogues) can get across the bridge and into the city without attracting attention, although those much lower than the guard level of 75 may find the guards see through it. Mages with
隱形術
won't have quite enough time to cross the entire bridge and get past all the guards, so your best bet is to hit the bridge on an epic mount, train them in partway and then hit Invisibility partway across or after you've crossed to shed aggro. Unfortunately,
隱形藥水
cannot be cast in combat so it cannot be used that way.
If you can't stealth, or are worried about not being able to sneak in due to level discrepancy, strip off all your gear before going in to avoid breakage. You can always just death your way to the right wall and away from the guards (or players who've come around to see what the fuss is about).
All you really need to do is get across the bridge, into the city, and immediately start hugging the righthand wall. Once you're past those four guards at the gate, you don't even really need stealth much anymore.
From here, the guards are sparse and mostly either on the road or on the northern side of it. The only one you really need to be careful of is

, a female orc patrolling the road. She has the ability to see through stealth, but you can easily stay away from her. You may need to wait for her to pass, well off the road, but she has a long patrol route and you can get around her without much issue.
Once you get to the pool, you're away from any guards, so you're reasonably safe. You can go all the way to the back wall if you want, or you can be bold and fish off the rock walkway down the middle. All you need to do is catch something -- anything -- and you'll get credit. Now hearth out!
Fishing Diplomat: Horde
The long part of this trip is getting to Stormwind. Easiest ways are either to get a friendly mage to port you to Stonard, or take the Burning Steppes portal near the port-in area of any major Horde city, then run through Deadwind Pass to Darkshore, then follow the northern shoreline across to Westfall.
Travel to the upper eastern corner of
Westfall
, just past the gnolls and overlooking the murloc village, around /way 56 8. You can even see the towers of Stormwind from here in the distance.

Sunrise over Murloctown and Stormwind
Follow the eastern wall in Longshore until you hit an area that says you're in Stormwind Harbor, about /way 30 91. You'll also get flagged around here. If you are using Water Walking, you can drop a line right here and get your item, since you get credit for this achievement whether you're in Stormwind Harbor or Stormwind City. If you don't have Water Walking, go to a small ledge just before you get in range of the docks, /way 26.6 62.1. You can stand here and fish well out of range of any guards or patrols (though not from flagged Alliance who might be camping here to catch the unwary).
X marks the fishing ledge
If you are a stealth class, you can also just walk right in the front gates of Stormwind and fish in either of the pools at the other side of the bridge. It's a bit shorter walk that way, but you're also more likely to be spotted by passing Alliance.
The Lurker Above

requires you to fish up
海底潛伏者
in Serpentshrine Cavern. If you have already done this prior to the launch of WoTLK Classic Pre-Patch, it's unlikely you will have credit for it, since it's not connected to a quest. This one is more risky than

, since this is in a level 70 raid instance rather than a level 60 one.

The following instructions are for attempting this solo. Note that since this is a higher-level instance, you will not be able to fight or stealth successfully to the
海底潛伏者
's Strange Pool by using bridges. That doesn't mean it's not possible -- just that you need to know the proper procedure for it.
Step 1 - Gather supplies
A few items in advance will help make this much easier. You'll need to have a method of walking on or above water, and a method of jumping without taking normal falling damage. If you have these abilities through spells, you have these covered. If not, you can substitute some of these with items:

Step 2 - Form a raid

Step 3 - Enter Serpentshrine & Prepare to Jump
Enter Serpentshrine and take the large elevator down. Run forward and to the right along the path. Go up the ramp to a smaller elevator and take this elevator up.
Step 4 - Jump! (Carefully!)
To prepare for your jump, move to the far left side of the ledge, close to the wall. Don't jump yet. And if you're not in a group planning to kill
海底潛伏者
, you might want to strip off your gear and just have your fishing pole equipped.
You must have BOTH your Water Walking and your Slow Fall solutions activated
before
you jump!
If you do your slow fall without water walking, you'll sink into the water and get julienned by carnivorous fish. If you try to water walk without slow fall, you'll hit the water like concrete and die. Do both, and you'll be able to run safely to your destination without encountering any enemies.
The best way to do it is to cast your Water Walking solution, then your Slow Fall, and jump quick after that, since most Slow Fall options have much shorter durations.
Once you're down, move toward the center of the platforms.
In the center of the platforms you'll see a ring of smaller wooden platforms with a fishing node in the center. This is where you fish up
海底潛伏者
. You don't need special bait, although using regular +Fishing bait isn't a bad idea.
Once you've summoned
海底潛伏者
, you're going to die without a group. It's the price for fishing greatness.
Since this can be complicated, here is a video showing the procedure. This shows a priest using Levitate, the easiest solution.
The Old Gnome and the Sea

is simple: fish in a pool. Almost any pool will do, although you will not get credit for fishing in a blood pool created during the fishing daily quest

The Scavenger

asks you to fish successfully from each of the junk nodes listed. There are six types found in several places in Azeroth and Outland. You can easily combine this achievement with

to get the

and learn

, as this is commonly found in wreckage pools.
If you don't already know

, start in Outland, as the wreckage pools there seem to drop the book a bit more frequently. Be sure to open all boxes you catch!
If you can't find the pool you're looking for, you may need to fish out some other pools in the area until the one you want spawns, or move to another zone if possible. There are a set number of pools per zone, and any of the possible pools that can spawn in one zone can replace one that's been fished out. Generally, it's faster to fish out existing pools and have them respawn.

Other Fishing Achievements
There are several other fishing achievements that are not part of the meta-achievement. Since these involve finding a Sea Turtle mount and a Sewer Rat pet, it's worth paying attention!

It's a little odd that
老人巴洛認可
(do all the fishing daily quests in Outland) is required for
熟練釣手
, but
追隨瑪西亞
(do all the fishing daily quests in Northrend) isn't, but there it is. There are other "gimme" achievements in
熟練釣手
so why this one was not included is a mystery.
This is another "gimme" because nearly everyone serious about fishing is going to be doing all the fishing dailies anyway, because there is some seriously good stuff in the
釣魚藏寶袋
reward you get for completing these.
There isn't a specific reward for this beyond 10 achievement points ... but a free achievement is a free achievement.
Fishing Daily Quests in Northrend
Old Ironjaw and Old Crafty
老鐵顎
and
老奸
are two very rare fish only found in Orgrimmar and Ironforge. Because this also isn't part of the meta achievement, there really isn't much reason to go out of your way to do this beyond bragging rights -- and certainly isn't a reason to go into the opposite faction's city.
The procedure for Alliance to get into Orgrimmar is well documented under
The Fishing Diplomat
, but for Horde getting into Ironforge, you'll have to go through the front gates and try to get back into the Forlorn Cavern in the extreme north of the city, the only place you can fish in Ironforge. It's not that hard with a stealthing class, but others may find this a lot harder.
Both
老奸
and
老鐵顎
are exceptionally rare catches -- around 0.1% out of all catches.
Since this only gets you 10 achievement points each, it's probably best just to be happy if you get one by accident and not worry about working on these too hard -- unless you're a die-hard completionist, of course.
Old Ironjaw and Old Crafty
Historic Note: This used to be easier to get, since if you go the Outland daily

at least (supposedly this never worked for
). By throwing back any
鱷魚寶寶
you caught, you could usually get
老奸
after 3-5 toss-outs of the
鱷魚寶寶
. I remember this worked at least for awhile in the original WoTLK, but having tested this extensively in WoTLK beta, this no longer appears to be a shortcut.

and
老鐵顎
are now both equally elusive.
I Smell A Giant Rat
我聞到巨大的老鼠
is the achievement you get if you manage to fish up a
巨大下水道老鼠
from the Underbelly sewers in Dalaran. This is another extremely rare catch -- under 0.1% -- and probably not worth going out of your way to get. Since you will need to be fishing in the sewers regularly for the daily quest

, you'll have plenty of opportunities to try your luck then.

Turtles All the Way Down

is awarded when you fish up the

mount. This is a very rare fish (less than 0.1%) out of any Northrend fishing pools. There isn't anything you do to increase your chances of getting one; it's simple RNG luck.
The
海龜
has a 60% speed on both land and water, meaning that it's still faster than Druid aquatic form. It's great for moving anywhere through water more quickly. Unfortunately, you can't fish off the back.
