on the margin, if you were to stack this gem over Solid Star of Elune (12 stamina):

you would be trading 750hp for 1%parry,1%dodge,1%block,-1%chancehit,-1%chancecrithit

i'm all for +defense but after hitting the 490 cap i'd go for pure stamina

and no other gems are in the same league as the two i just mentioned. Forget the socket bonuses and stack 12stam gems on all pieces!~

all tanks are so obsessed with + stamina only because it looks like you are so imba.

truth is that armor, which is the most important tanking stat, is nearly always ignored.

compare these two items

Myrmidon's Headdress
most tanks would probably chose the second one, because of more pure stamina and a meta socket, but please... look at the armor!

defence is also important, and like armor, it should be taken over dodge/parry/stamina

I don't know if I'm "most warriors" but having a 70 prot war I would definatly take Felsteel Helm over Myrmidon's Headdress. Still, were talking about gems here and gems don't give armor =p.

I can see how nice it is, but who sells or makes it? Is it a high level jewelcrafting thing? Thot is silent - nightmare! Please help - I have just got my first socket item and want to equip it pronto..!

the dif between the 2 is that u CAN get a defence gem in that red socket, and then u get that metta socket, u can get 18 stam 5 stun resist or 17 def rating and CHANCE TO HEAL, thats like a crusader. i mean the felsteel is still nice if u want a ton of sockets and want to personalize yourself a helm. both are nice but like i said IT DEPENDS ON WHAT U ARE LACKING

i belive that armor is important, much life is important, but i have 13500 armor, and boglord noncrit hit me 9150 in heroic. so i must say, most important is that they dont hit u at all. so u need def rating parry dodge as much as posible.

First of i think u mean Underbog Lord, and it does not do nature dmg, it is physical...
(healer look for the animation on the Underbog Lord, before he do his imba attack, and start your bigest heal. if u time it right it shouldnt be a big problem, even with a blue geard tank)

if u get this gem save it for a epic item (thats what i recomend tho).

how the game currently is, a full epic warrior and a best-you-can-get-blues geard warrior will have about the same armor exept for shield, mostly due to the armor on felsteel set (id recomend CoT reverd leggs or aldor reverd legs over felsteel ones tho). personaly id say the best pre epic helmet and gloves are the felsteel ones.

now after the 2.1 patch all epic gear will be boosted due to the elixir/flask nerf, and this will do that epic tank gear will have way more armor and other stats then blues...

now the hole stamina vs other stats... if u are a warrior tank in all blues, use Solid Star of Elune on all your sockets (farming gold in tbc is easy and fast for any class if u spech for it, or have right proffesion), reason for this is 4 things... first, no blue tank items have socket bonus that outways the "power" of the +12 stamina on Solid Star of Elune. 2nd, the blue gear have almost no mitigation stats on them exept for armor (talking here about parry, dodge and agility (for dodge and armor)) and defense, so the little u can get from gems doesnt realy do that mutch in your total mitigation. 3rd, blue gear have ok stamina for non heroics, but for heroics and raid dungeons it lacks it in bucket loads, so u need to add it where ever u can 8read. gems and enchants), and since heroics and raid dungeon mobs often do lots dmg per hit, and not many hits of low dmg, and since u have low dodge, parry and miss (since u arent at 490 defense (for lvl73 mobs and bosses)) u need to rely on your health pool and your healers to save you. 4th, all the armor, dodge, parry, block in the world cant save u from magic dmg (as mentioned in another post to^^), only your health pool and magic resistance gear can do that, and since u cant change gear in combat and some mobs do both physical and magic dmg, stamina is still king...

when u start getting epics u will notice that your armor will stay about the same (pre 2.1 patch) and u might even go a little down in HP at the start (also pre 2.1 patch)... but what u will notice is that your other mitigation stats will start to rise fast and now is the time to start thinking about mitigation stats on gems, also the socket bonuses will start to get better...
id recomend Solid Star of Elune (+12 stamina) for blue sockets, Enduring Talasite (+4 defense rating, +6 stamina) for yellow sockets and Subtle Living Ruby (+8 dodge rating) for red sockets (after 2.1 patch u might want to change it to Flashing Living Ruby (+8 parry rating), due to parry rating/% buff). now some of u might think that why go for gems that only counts as one color, that will suck when i get a meta gem... well the best meta gem for tanking is Powerful Earthstorm Diamond (+18 stamina, +5% stun resist) and it requires 5 blue gems and since enduring Talasite counts as blue and yellow and Solid Star of Elune counts as blue and most tanking items have mostly blue and yellow sockets that shouldnt be a problem... the gems should ofc be changed for epic tanking stat gems as u get em, but id as said above save those gems for epic gear..

I for one have about 65-75% epics in my tanking gear now and have 12.8k HP (about 700-800 more then in blues), but i have 14.1k armor now. (about 1500 more then in blues, where about 1000 is from epic shield and rings). the bigest difference and the think this is what i notice the most in raids, is the parry, miss and dodge mitigation... i have 23% dodge, 18% parry (will prob be more like 20% in 2.1 patch) and 25% block. also have about 250 (ad to that +30% from talents) block value (know it isnt mutch for epics, but havent focused on it that mutch) and since i have over 490 defense i dont get crited by mobs (EVER), and they have ther max miss rate of 11% against me...

the thing is that mobs in wow end game (if u can call heroics, Karazhan, gruul's Lair and Magtheridon's Lair that anymore) have so big dps output that the only way to survive is with extreme mitigation of dmg or insane HP on tanks and insane healing power on healers, and since the game as a hole need to be balansed they have solved it with dodge/parry/ block mitigation instead of insane HP or armor and insane heals (not counting magic dmg here since the standard restance gear rules apply they just added more stamina to the ress gear)...

CONCLUSION :

blue gear lack mitigation, so u compensate with +stamina since the mitigation u can add with gems will not be enough anyways. on epic gear u have good mitigation so u spread your gems out on mitigation and stamina (dont be afraid to go well over 490 defense, since it boosts your dodge/parry/block % with 0.04% per defense point (not rating) and its good to have when u use resistance gear to still have 490 defense to avoid crits...) just dont let the defense over 490 on your normal tanking gear take the place of more stamina or better mitigation.

PS. its allways good to have a stamina set avalible (can use the best old blues with +stamina gems for this) for when its needed (like OT on gruul), mine is 14.3k unbuffed with 490 defense, 14.3k armor and still OK mitigation.

LOL@the stats on this 'epic' gem...it has a whole +1 Defence Rating over the Enduring Talasite I can get of the AH for 30g.

Old Hillsbrad isn't that bad, but the three Lookout pats that spawn un-controllable adds are ridiculous and harder than some heroic bosses.

Yus, maybe you dont need more then 490 def for immune to crits, but after the 490 mark you still get dodge, block and parry so even after 490 you can still use def.

I am a 70 Prot Paladin, i almost have the tankatronic goggles from engineering. I plan to put this in along with a meta gem. With the set bonus, i will gain 12 stam and +5 def rating, along with a meta gem (which i havent decided on yet). Sounds good to me!

these arguments are dumb. this is an amazing gem because u can socket it in pre-kara gear (epecially for druids) that already has mucho defense, freeing up other pieces of armor for other dmg mitigating stats such as agil and +dodge. more +def on less items means more gear that helps with other forms of mitigation once ur already "uncrittable"
