Welcome to Wowhead's Pre-Raid Best in Slot Gear list for Protection Paladin Tank in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. This guide will list the recommended gear for your class and role, containing gear sourced from dungeons, PvP, professions, BoE World drops, and reputations.
Best in Slot Gear for Protection Paladin Tank Pre-Raid
Gearing in the pre-raid can be about a lot of things. Some think it's about building the perfect, most well itemized set available to us using only out of raid means. Others may say that it's unrealistic to aim for the perfect set prior to entering a raid since the entry-level is fairly low. These two expectations can't be met at the same time, so for the former we are building a set that is heavily reliant on heroic dungeon drops and the understanding that, not all of this gear need to be acquired before entering your first raid. The latter is recieving a set that is not reliant on heroic drops, in that most of its gear is from either reputation, crafting, questing, or normal dungeon, either of which are not on obstructive lockouts allowing you to target these items in particular. Ultimately we consider the pre raid gearing phase to be about getting you into raids and not necessarily gearing you in the best available gear outside of raids.
It's generally advised that you keep your gear up to date on enchants and gems. Since professions are made to be relevant for a significant portion of the expansion, they are also disproportionately strong and can significantly boost your survivability. It's also good to focus on your survival and mitigation in general before entering raids, your job is first and foremost to survive, and while unfortunate you should sacrifice raid performance to do so when necessary. Ultimately however every raid team is different and it is up to you to be cognizant of your raid and its needs.
Generally speaking gearing in the preraid is less about individually powerful items and more about acquiring a full set of the highest item level gear you can find. Gear is largely normalized across deterministic item budget lines in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. This means that most tanking of the same item level bracket and quality will have a gross similarity in stats, especially stamina and strength. We primarily express gearing paths or specialize our sets through secondary stats such as defense or hit rating. This means that, beyond the recommendations below and stressing how important crit immunity is, you should aim to get as much heroic+ gear in your preraid and not necessarily target specific items.
Crit immunity - 540 Defense.
EHP - A high health & armor pool.
Avoidance - A healthy amount of miss, parry, and dodge.
Threat - Just enough to keep threat away from your DPS & healers.

There is also no shortage of emblems for anyone looking to get some as they will be obtainable from almost all but the hardest content available. The strategy for dealing with Emblem loot can differ wildly based on your personal goals. We are not very reliant on emblems for our pre-raid gearing. We suggest you purchase depending on what gear you have on hand at the moment.

is such a strong item and difficult to recommend. It costs a lot of emblems that can collectively be better spent elsewhere at least if you are in the early stages of gearing. That said none of the alternatives match up to how good this is, but in the pre raid you should just concentrate at getting your item level up with relevant gear above all.

works well in that regard, since it's a reputation reward you can fill this slot quickly and move on to other items.

It meets most of the requirements that we like, not only is it very good and you can wear this for a lot of Phase 1 but it's also obtainable without grinding for it. Prices for BoEs may be a bit rocky at the start and as such you could pass over this but the socket makes it very good.

also punches above its weight. The addition of armor gives this ring a good amount of additional EHP but it has no defense rating which is crucially lacking in these early game sets. Should you have it, from TBCC then

As a rule of thumb you are recommended to wear the highest DPS weapon that you can find. Weapon damage can have an impact on the choice of weapon you might want to use, however when planning your pre-raid gear, we think you should just focus on what is most accessible and takes the least amount of time and effort.

is a strong weapon to start raiding with, and is somewhat worth going after since the dungeon

Can anyone please explain me why infantry-assault-blade should be better thancloudstriders-waraxe?
Only the speed is different and I have not found any ability used by the Prot Paladin which is depending on weapon damage since the hammer of righteousness is taking the DPS.
