I know this seems like a no-brainer to some, but I just ran into someone who didn't know this so I figured I'd post it here for folks just getting into the game. Make sure that you take the time to put the icon for this on your hotbar, as well as for any other profession you might undertake. You'll find the icon in your Spellbook under the "General" tab. It will save you a lot of time in the future.

Currently you can have an "disenchanting" alt where you can send all your greens etc and Disenchant them into stackable, storable enchanting materials for future use/investment.

However, in the next patch (2.0) and in TBC, Blizzard is implementing an Enchanting level requirement for disenchanting items. For Example, a level 60 green may now require level 225 enchanting to disenchant.

One of the biggest affects will be on high end shards. Not only common practice for "hackers," a lot of raiding players will occasionally pick up level 1 enchanting to DE their old/retired gear for the valuable large brilliants and nexus shards and then relearn their previous profession like herbalism which is somewhat easy to level.

For beginning enchanters: disenchanting is basically how you get the profession moving. Disenchant the non-valuable greens and blues you acquire until you're no longer leveling enchanting from disenchanting items, and then you can begin your skill ups with enchantments.

As for the poster above, I do put the disenchant icon on the bar of my "enchant bank" but I don't have it there for my main. If you need it, you can just hit your spellbook key and its there = ) I guess it really depends on how much stuff you have/want to have on your action bars.

Ennui is correct, there will be skill level requirements for enchanting coming soon. However, from what I have seen disenchanting the high end gear will only require you to level up to a skill of 225. This is important because you can still have a low lvl enchanting alt just for the disenchant, you just have to level up the skill of the alt. If it were above the 225 break, then you would have to level a DE mule up to 35 and get artisan.

This also saves a few G for training and if you are alliance -- this will save some trips to Uldaman. Just get to 225 and park the enchanting mule again. :-)

although it might be a pain to level the enchanting to 225, enchanting is so profitable that it is probaby worth having a lvl 35 alt with d/e.

To build up enchanting (and stock reagents) very quickly, be sure to build up Tailoring first thing as well. Cloth drops everywhere, and soon you can make level green items that aren't worth much themselves but can be disenchanted for reagents.

Also, keep a set of bracers/other armor available to enchant "back and forth" with different enchants. You'll level in the early stages without having to stand on a street corner in Stormwind, lagging while you offer free enchants to people who take 30 minutes to show up.

Advice for beginners: Grind your levels up purely by using the Disenchant ability until you hit level 50-60 or so of enchanting. At that point you should have enough materials to grind higher by making actual enchants. The reason to just straight grind off of disenchanting for the earlier levels is that it will save you materials.

And for those who may be curious, I can verify that you can get to at least level 66 by disenchanting. That's how high mine got before I started grinding on trash enchants, but that was because guildies were shipping me trash greens.

Also, don't bother putting time into selling enchants that are below level 140 or so unless they use a shard (and even then, a lot of people aren't interested).

I couldnt DE item that required lvl 64 to use (item lvl 102) with skill 270, tooltip said I need atleast 275 to DE that. another item, same required lvl 64 (this time item lvl 97) required only 225 skill to DE.

item lvl over 100, = 275+ skill to DE
item lvl below 100 = 225 skill to DE

Powerleveling enchanting at low levels is incredibly easy; especially for low levels. http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=7418 75 times on random pair of bracers; a free 75 enchanting, quick and painless.

I have Enchanting(disenchant) but when i look at an item it says: Disenchant: 40s 15c (example) but when i disenchant all that comes out is strange dust and lesser magic essence. How do i get the money out?:P (i'm not very good in WoW:P so a little understanding pls:))

Since Blizzard added items with random enchantments, I've been looking for a way to create a onebutton macro to disenchant loads of items. This is the way I found the best:

You need to find the item ID of the item you want to DE, fx Hessonite Band were we see the item ID is 52308.

Turn autoloot on, then create the macro:

/cast Disenchant
/use item:52308

This will make DE'ing loads of random enchanted items much easier, with a 1 button push macro.
Tip: You can add more /use item:-ID- if you have several different items to DE.

I hoping someone can help me. Somehow I have disenchanted items I'm WEARING. Ugh. So next time I log in I'm wondering my my ilvl is so low and discover I have no helm or back on OR in my bags. I'm not sure what key combo I'm accidentally pressing to remove my gear and D/E it. This used to happen to my husband as well. Anyone have an idea what the heck I'm doing wrong?

The following Macro is the best way to disenchant items:

/run local f=DeM or CreateFrame("Button","DeM",nil,"SecureActionButtonTemplate") f:SetAttribute("type","click") f:SetAttribute("clickbutton",GetMouseFocus())
/cast Disenchant
/click DeM

It disenchants any item you mouse is over, without asking you to confirm the disenchant. Just be VERY VERY carefull not to disenchant you most prized epic from Mythic dificulty!

Level 1 Enchanting skill can disenchant Legion items, just in case you wanted to know :)

You also get skillups for Enchanting, not sure how far that goes.

I bought the yak because I like playing with sounds enabled but the constant disenchant sound right next to the transmog NPC in new dalaran drove me crazy.

Disenchanting doesn't seem to give any skill anymore. Just created a new character who at lvl 5 got the classic enchanting skill. Disenchanted a bunch of greens (low level classic ones), and no skill-ups at all.

Disenchanting seems now to give skill to the equivalent expansion. I have an enchanter that was created in BfA so she doesn't have the skills for previous expansions. Planning to get the skill, I just disenchanted some Northrend and Pandaria items. They gave Northrend & Pandaria skill, respectively. Unknown still: how much of the skill I can get, since I only had a few items. Pandaria got to 21, since I had some skill already.
