This allows you to learn 遠古傳送：達拉然, a teleport to the original location of Dalaran high above in the air much like when you use 傳送：塞拉摩 when you are phased to the ruined Theramore. In fact, due to the absurd nature of the spell, it can be deduced that there will be a phased area here, quite possibly the original Dalaran being relocated back.

With Jaina ruling Dalaran and saying that she "cannot rule with neutrality", it's possible that this Dalaran will be returned to being an Alliance bastion of glory. Don't forget that Garrosh also killed Rhonin, the husband of alliance-aligned Vereesa Windrunner. Ranger General of the Silver Covenant.

As a lover of lore, this amazes me as everything in WoW right now is catered for balance of gameplay.

Or I'm merely overspeculating and the the telport is literally ancient and lists the exact xyz coordinates of where you would land if Dalaran is still there and you, as a reader, are simply following the information on the book.

In regards to a previous posting, I too am a lore addict. And in the book and even Blizzard, it has been rumored something may happen to Dalaran in the future. For sure? we don't know, but this could be a hint towards something. Or if Blizzard changes its mind, then it is nothing.

For me, I had to complete the quests, 只是保管而已，當然了 and 徹底抹消 (after turning in the quest item) before the tome even became clickable. I did this on normal difficulty. Just make sure you loot EVERYTHING off the boss, and then check the shelves between the two destructible bookshelves, to the right of the entrance to the room.

For those wondering about portals to places that no longer exist such as old Dalaran and Theramore, the answer can be found in one of the filler books in Dalaran for the "Higher Learning" Achievement entitled "Thinking with Portals - A Memorandum on Proper Portal Usage" (傳送門安全使用備忘錄#comments)

Rule number 1 about portals is below - mages have the ability to create portals to anywhere, but the penalty for doing so to a non Kirin-Tor approved destination is forbidden and punishable with death (through I'd love to get my hands on one of these D-6 Permits). Despite the cities no longer being there the portal designations were already established and thus can still be used without Jaina hunting you down.

"Rule #1: Do not create a portal to anywhere but the designated Kirin Tor portal drop-off zones. The most dangerous aspect of the portal spell is its vast potential. We realize it's easy for a mage to create a door to anywhere, so our only way to combat such potentially deadly acts is to make it punishable by death.
Special Issue License D-6 permits open portal usage, but is rarely issued. Speak with your local Portal Trainer about qualifying for this license.".

Summary of how to get this and the Ancient Tome of Portal: Dalaran:

Fly to Scarlet Halls (right hand instance). Normal or Heroic mode.
Make sure you kill the final boss (Flameweaver Koegler) fast and stand infront of him to block him burning his books.
Loot book from the shelf just inside on the right. (If you look backwards towards the door, it's just on the left)
Learn Ancient Teleport: Dalaran.
Go to regular Dalaran
You can now buy one copy of Ancient Tome of Portal: Dalaran from Endora Moorehead (in the room to the left of the Violet Citadel steps) - though if someone has bought it recently, you might need to wait up to an hour for her to sell it again.

I have run this on my level 73 Mage and looted Koegler and everything and yet still no cog icon appears, what am I doing wrong? Is it my level? I know I cannot use it but I'd like to have it! I have done both quests also and turned them in, still nothing.

I would like to confirm the following:

1. Quests are NOT required to get this book.

2. For me, looting the last boss WAS required before the book became lootable.

3. I got this book on my own at level 83, no trouble at all

teleports ONLY to dalaran, not ironforge or any other major cities

The book is laying sideways on the third shelf up between the two bookcases on the right side of the room. If I had looked at the screen shots I would have found it a lot faster, but now you know.

I can confirm that I did this on normal mode as a level 90 mage (frost nova killed most adds, haha) and did not pickup any new quests, killed minimal trash and only the packmaster boss before taking down the final boss. However, I had completed the dungeon quests previously, so that may explain why all I had to do was loot the final boss for the book to be clickable.

Happy slow falling. Or, this makes the perfect portal for that jerk in the group (yeah, THAT guy). If he doesn't check carefully, he'll think he's going to land in town but really he'll be plummeting to his death.

For everyone who are wondering wtf is the point with this item, here it is:

1. Get the tome and learn the teleport spell. Then cast the spell and fall to your death unless you got slow fall ready.

2. Teleport to Dalaran and buy the tome to learn how to create a portal to this deathtrap that you recently discovered.

3. Watch trade chat and be on the lookout for the following text string: WTB PORTAL DALARAN!

I guess you can imagine the rest...

Went there today on my 86 mage. Looted the book successfully but it said I had to be Level 90 to use it. Is this a recent change?

Can't believe I've never even heard of this. Awesome spell for Alliance mages for an easy way to get to the north of the Eastern Kingdoms. No need to fly to Grom'gol base camp for a zeppelin to Undercity anymore!

Confirmed this still exists and is lootable @ lvl 100

However, only one book is lootable per run. Found this out the hard way, when I ran the instance with another mage & had to run again for him to loot the ancient tome.

Also, some of the mechanics can bug out. Don't pick up the shield in front of the archers (you dont need it) and the level 30 guards after the houndmaster WILL kill you if you try to pass before the boss is dead.

Other than that, easy-peasy =) I only wish portal roulette was still playable...

Farmed this on Normal unitl I got bored. I DID pick up both quests and I DID bother killing the 50 footmen just to be sure on the first run through. I did NOT bother looting the quest boss each run through. I was able to loot the tome straight after killing him. Not looting him speeded things up for me as he drops blues which need a delete confirmation if you are short of bag space. I DID NOT hand in the quests at any time.

For Mages soloing there are a couple of traps even for level 90s. The first "archery" obstacle, just send your water elemental up to them and let it take care of things while you pour yourself a coffee. At the next "hounds" barrier, don't rush down through the door past the guards, you will be insta killed. Take the boss down to 1 health as per the intended mechanic. He calls in his hounds. Kill one. Now go add sugar/milk to coffee as per taste while the hounds take care of the door guards. Walk diagonally and then go invisible. Rush in to boss just as invis wears out. Profit.

Some hefty Pandaren reputation to be had along the way, more so on Heroic. It's all good.

For all of the new mages out there trying to get this. Don't be like me. It's not on the book shelves that are in your face, it's on the wall book shelves. Walk in, kill boss, loot. turn right, ignore the bookshelf that's in your face and look on the WALLS.

This is still available during Shadowlands Prepatch 9.0.1. Edit to add: Also I did it at level 38, the mobs were all level 30 and clearly had some kind of "you're doing legacy content" modifier applied to them because everything was extremely easy to solo.

as long as koegler doesnt burn the book cases this tome is lootable. even looted in my lowbie mage alt that is lvl 21. Item itself cant be used until lvl 35. /sigh.

For those mages trying to buy an Ancient Tome of Portal: Dalaran from Endora Moorehead in Dalaran, remember that War Mode is an easy way to jump the line of other mages waiting for the inventory to refresh itself. I wasted a few days clicking and hoping in the room with three or four other hopeful mages before it occurred to me to try War Mode. (If you are not a fan of PvP, don't worry since you will be in two capital cities and so cannot be murdered before you get your tome.) You'll be all set for next Winter's Veil.

It isn't necessarily on the shelf just to the left of the door as you're in the room looking back. Not counting the bookshelves standing in the room (I.e., not built into the walls, my second mage looted it from the 3rd shelf to the left of the door.

If you're trying to do this in 2026 just make sure you are in the correct timeline. Talk to Zidormi at 69 / 62 and select take me back to present time. Then go to the Scarlet Halls. If you are in the Scarlett Halls Library you are in the wrong dungeon.

In the Scarlett Halls, an easy way to tell early on is if you get to a part where there is targets you can pick up and hide behind while arrows are shot at you, you are in the correct timeline. If you don't see this, you are in the wrong timeline and you won't get the tome. I've done it on Heroic and Normal. Mythic just puts you into Heroic.
