I've got to say, that as a Hordie, this is my new fave mount. All horde mounts are, well, not massive (with the exception of a Kodo, but that's nothing on this). The alliance have Elekk which is pretty big, the Hippogryph (Which i do realise is available to both factions, but it's an Alliance-style mount).

The mammoth's are bigger than any previous land mount and in many places, struggle to fit through some doorways (I'm a Blood Elf, so i'm not the largest race). The only thing that i'm not so sure about is the running animation, but this thing stinks of awesome. The standing animation is a mix of side-to-side swaying, and standing perfectly still. The /mountspecial animation is a front-legs stomp.

I've now got every PvP mount i know of (including the Black War Bear) that's available for horde, and still, this one is my favourite. It's also the cheapest of the mammoth's to acquire, though will take a few days of serious heroic farming while controlling Wintergrasp to get enough Stone Keeper's Shard's to get it.

Taurens beware, you can not fit in any doorways, or under any overpasses on this mount. It is still crazy awesome, but having to manually dismount, even in Dalaran, is annoying.

Now, not only looks, but the SIZE matters, and what's benefical with this you might wonder? Actually, there is one thing:

You can move in much deeper water without dismounting!

This is actually very awsome. Get your very own deep water mammoth today! ^.^

PS. Even tho it sucks getting stuck at the sewers enterance every time :P

Allright, so today i did VoA25, but to everyone's great surprise this mount actually dropped from Archavon! No kidding here. As WoWhead appereantly haven't noticed yet it CAN drop in VoA, atleast 25.
I got no pics of it tho (Playing in Windowed Mode so no scr33nshots gets saved, they just get saved as a ctrl+v option, wich kinda sux imo.)

So if you are on the edge if you either wanna buy the mount to make your main look awesome, or buy the shoulders for your alt to ding 80 today, i would rather go for the shoulders as this mount CAN drop.

This mount is really big,

But you can't ride inside the Orgrimmar AH, or use this in Thunderbluff, to solve this

a) Use your old fast ground mount!
b) Complain to blizzard to make doors to structures larger!

It's cool and tall, but it does get stuck on low arches. Places like UC and TB just aren't made for this mount.

this isquite a cool mount, and unlike most traditional mounts, it comes with advantages and disadvantages.

an advantage is seeing as it is so large, you can ride it through deeper water without dismounting.

a disadvantage is again because its so large, you can get stuck in some doorways forcing you to dismount, walk a few steps and mount again.

still, with these aside, its a cool mount, and if you have no other way of spending stone keeper shards, i recommend it :)

i have a tauren dk, and i will tell u this, because every mount except for the mechano hog gets bigger because of ur size as a tauren, it does not matter what mounts u r riding, u will get stuck in doorways

well with wolves, its not always a problem

but with things like kodos, raptors and mammoths, u would have a better chance getting a black war bear by urself comapred to getting in a door, lol

heck, even hawksriders can get stuck in the ogrimmar ah doorway

the worst mount for this scenario is a kodo in my opinion

they barely jump at all, especially over something, they are so freakin huge, and plus, after u ride them for so long, u get bored with them

the only reason i bought one on my tauren dk was to prove to some freakin lvl 37 undead warlock that a kodo is NOT a multi passenger mount, but he insisted that it was

so i went to bloodhoof village

bought the great gray kodo

learned it

summoned it

invited him to a group

told him to hop on

and made him admit he was wrong

so basically, the only kodo really worth getting is the black war kodo because is shows that u have killed a lot of allys, so it kind of cool

but even then, i would rather get the wolf or the raptor

so all in all, kodos blow

btw, the vendor for the black war mammoth is sitting on a black war mammoth next to the steps that goes to the vault of archavon

the grand black war mammoth is dropped from archavon, and i believe it has a 2-4% drop rate, so u may have to kill him a few times before u actually get it

if u have 300 stone keeper shards at lvl 75, then i think u might be doing ok for urself

and yes, it is purchasable at any lvl as long as u have the journeyman riding skill and wintergrasp :)

even though this is one of my favorite mounts, i dont really think it should be classified as a PvP mount

cause think about it

you get the right to collect stone keeper shards when you own wintergrasp

but that doesnt really mean u competed in wintergrasp though

you get the stone keeper shards from instances in northrend (and dailies in wintergrasp too, but not required)

so basically, you can get the mount without ever even seeing the inside of wintergrasp fortress

same as the grand black war mammoth

for both of these mammoths, all u got to do is run an instance,

it isnt really "PvP" mount in my opinion

Another advantage I've noticed is that unlike most other mounts, the mammoth is off the GCD. It's rather convenient especially in BGs after rezzing to self buff then immediately mount instead of waiting 1.5 seconds. Sorry if someone already mentioned this :).

Quick question, you know how when you buy something with say emblems of conquest, you can resell them within 2 hours for a full redemption, is this the same with heirloom items if you've sent them to an alt? In turn allowing a level 40 to run around on a mammoth.

One thing I have to say: I don't like the run animation. It looks like he's doing bunny hops. I imagine a mammoth runs like an elephant, if you've ever seen footage of an elephant charging, this mammoth runs nothing like it at all.

With this, Taurens can't pass through the round south-western tunnel leading to the center fountain in Dalaran for example. It's definitely big, and makes even more doorways impassable. All the shops in Dalaran are also too small for this mount.

Also uploaded a screenshot of a comparison of a Tauren vs Human side by side on the Black War Mammoth. No extra size enhancers!

I got exactly 1k honor, because everything on this site said it was 1k, We just got WG today (Alliance populated) And it turned up as 2k, needless to say I wasn't happy, at all, (I don't like pvping but I did, just for that) it was my LAST mount to get the Albino Drake.

This mount runs with all the grace of a moving van. Still, it is great fun to smugly sit on this beast while observing the residents of Ogrimmar.

I can confirm that, as of 5.1.0a, if you have the Alliance mount, the 黑色戰爭長毛象韁繩 (the one with the blue armor), you will also get the Horde version of 黑色戰爭長毛象韁繩 (the one with the red armor) mount as well on your Horde characters, and vice-versa.

Than I notice that I can do VoA, So I did . Killed the fire boss and the grand mammoth drop , Now I have 2 mammoth , THINK BEFORE YOU DO THINGS!

Is this still obtainable? Honor is no longer a currency in game. I have been trying to get this mount for the last 2 weeks in anticipation of the pre-patch, but every time I check my faction doesn't have control of Wintergrasp.

Just a little update: I just bought it for 15 honor marks in wintergrasp (patch 9.1). It was alliance controlled on my horde character so I logged into an alliance alt (which seemed to be another battle / map because the timer for the next battle was longer). But it is exactly the location on the map here. Portal room -> Dalaran (Northrend) -> wintergrasp (behind Icecrown Citadel) 51.8 17.4
And you get the Alliance and Horde mount. For this patch you can also buy 5 Marks of Honor for 2000 honor points at the pvp vendor in Oribos.
