I obtained mine about 50 casts down by the Cantrips & Crows. I was waterwalking out by the gate in the water. Careful its BoP so you do get a message to accept picking it up. My fishing was 450. I had equipped a +20 fishing rod and a bright bauble that was +75 fishing.

Fished mine up at cantrips and crows today. Took less than 50 casts. Pure luck probably, but it definitely can be fished up there, so don't give up :)

Fished in Cantrips & Crows area in Underbelly near fishing trainer, and got mine is 55 minutes. It took 169 casts and I received:
95 Sewer Carp, 40 Magic Eaters, 1 Enchanted Vial, 1 Embued Vial, 5 Leaded Vials, 9 Empty Vials, 11 drowned rats, and 7 partially eaten fish

don't give up, I wish i had the same luck catching old ironjaw in IF :-)

Well something good came of all the d/c's i have been having all i could do was fish and sure enough i fished up the rat on the 4th cast lol. I was in cantrips and crows fishing off the dock there. I have though fished before over 1000 casts and did not get it. Good luck on your fishing it up.

Ok here is the break down on fishing in the Underbelly of Dalaran. There are 3 places to fish, The Black Market, Circle of Wills, and Cantrips and Crows. The Giant Sewer Rat can be caught in any of these 3 locations.

I fished all 3 locations with Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole, Weather Beaten Fishing Hat, and Nat Pagle's Extreme Anglin' Boots. I used the +75 Fishing Skill boost you get by using the hat to apply a lure to the pole. This gave me 565 fishing.

Got mine last night. Fished from 5pm - 11pm Sunday, and 7pm - 9pm Monday. Not 100% sure about the # of casts, but it was somewhere around 1200. As most say, I confirm that I got mine at Cantrips & Crows. I fished it at the end of the dock, facing the most open water at the end, no trick here but saying as when you are casting the 800th time you start second guessing yourself. I saw this posted somewhere, i dont remember where, some time ago, and today i decided to give it a try:

1. Get the Crocolisks in the City daily in your log, but dont complete it.
2. Join a raid. Ask a buddy to make a group and convert to raid.
3. Get an Underbelly Elixir, and get the "Hungry Tuskarr" buff (+50 fishing skill)
4. Go fishing for the Giant Rat (or Mr Pinchy).

Doing this i got the Giant Rat on the 17th cast.

No idea if it will work for you, or if I just got really lucky.

I caught my sewer rat in Cantrips and Crowes. I was standing in the little boat on the side next to the dock where the fishing supply vendor is for almost 2 hours before I gave up and switched sides after catching over 20 empty vials and a ton of carp. I ran over to the boardwalk that is on the second level up, on the opposite side of the dock with the fishing vendor where the path to enter and leave the sewer is, and caught the rat on like the 5th try.

ok what made this achievement alot easier was haveing the epic fishing pole from hitting exhaulted with the kalu'ak Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole with Aquadynamic Fish Attractor or the hooks that you get from the shat fish daily and they stack with the hungry tuskar buff you can get with the underbelly pots that u find in the underbelly wich brings your plus to fishing to 180

For those of you fishing with autoloot be very careful that you do not move or recast when you have the BoP loot popup on the screen, or you will lose the rat. I can confirm that you do NOT get the achievement for catching the rat, as you might think with the wording of the achievement. Instead you get the achievement when you loot the rat. Note this is different, and thus unexpected, from the Old Crafty/Old Ironjaw achievements, which you complete simply by fishing up the fish, regardless of whether you looted it or not.

I was fishing up the rat under the impression that you didn't have to pay much attention because you would hear the achievement noise upon catching it, and thus would be less likely to accidentally move or recast. But this is not the case, so take heed fishers!

I was lucky enough to fish up one of these about 15 minutes before a server shutdown. It took me less than 10 minutes on this particular day. I fished it up from the sewers in Cantrips and Crows, Dalaran. I was standing on the lower platform under the deck.

My fishing skill was at 450, with a +100 fish hook attached to the Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000 fishing rod.

hi id like to add my story of catching the rat. i fished from 6am till about 1pm, wasnt paying attention when i cought the rat and cast out again :(. so i lost it. continued fishing until 11 pm that night then started at 6 am again, i finnaly just cought it at 11:25 am. So im thinkin that fishing for it from the very begining will take about 10-12 hours. i dnt know the exact # of casts but i filled up 3 20 slot bags 2 and a half times, on the 2nd time fishing for it. so to those that have cought it after 10 casts grats, but if your tryn for this b prepared to sit there 4 a lil bit, but make sure u pay attention to wat u catch. i cought it both times at the end of the dock at cantrips and crows

As of patch 3.1, it is no longer required to have a minimum of 430 fishing skill to cast in Dalaran (or anywhere now I believe). Had 244 Fishing at the time and +100 lure attached with +20 skill from fishing rod, putting me at 364 skill level total. Managed to fish up this guy and skill up to 245 Fishing at the same time after a good half hour or so of fishing in the Underbelly.

Well, I guess it's time to make everyone angry. Out of superstition i pulled my 4 stack of rabbit's foot out of the bank. Whether it works or not, with a fishing skill of 256 and a +100 item on my rod, I caught him in 3 casts. Cantrips and Crows.

Raises the question, doesn't it? Are they lucky? Last time I had them on me I scored an Azure Whelpling in less than 30 minutes.

So I have been fishing for this the past couple days. I am at 388 skill with a +30 from pole and +100 from lure and havent got anything but junk basically. I see a guy get the achievement for 25 fish. 2 min later he gets the sewer rat. So all of the notes saying how high your fishing has to be is wrong. Not long after he got the rat he got 50 fish. I feel like I wasted all my time. So just fyi to everyone that it doesnt matter what your fishing skill is to get this pet

Just got mine after 3 hrs of fishing @450 fishing and +100 lure in the Cantrips and Crows part of the sewers. Was getting really bored and was reading the comments here and noticed someone mentioned Underbelly Elixir. Remembered I had found one in the sewers the other day so drank it. It turned me into a wasp which I thought probably wouldn't help much, but....I buzzed around over the surface of the water, cast my rod while still in the water and got the Rat on the first try!

for what its worth.. did this in just 44 casts.. maxed fishing +35 (buffs from pole and hat)
cantrips and crows... over by the right side down the ramp to the water.. other side was crowded.
only misses i had were when i wasnt paying attention.

I had to register just to say this. I was fishing all day for this guy, and finally got him. I fish with auto loot on, to make things faster. Weird thing was, there was no dialog box that popped up asking me to accept the rat, it just went straight into my inventory just like any normal fish.

I don't know if they changed that about the rat in 3.1, or what... But apparently there's no confirmation box required to accept the rat.

I got this achievement after about 5 days of fishing in the Sewers. Got it on the left side of Cantrips and Crows.

- Last night was doing fishing daily and fished up another one! However once I left the sewers it despawned from
my bag. My assumption is since I already had learned the summons that WoW will not let you keep another one.
Not that I would want to, other then to boast at my guild members who have been fishing for over a month and have
not caught it. :)

I don't know if this made a difference, but after two weeks of fishing for this rat for two hours at least every day, I finally got my rat on the came cast that I fished up my Corroded Jewelry for the quest Jewel of the Sewers. Maybe it works along the same line as the crocolisk quest?

As I have been reading those nice subjects while I fished, I first have to say : Ty for your contributions =)

Then, I do confirm that auto-loot does work now, as you will not see a yes or no question window pop as you achieve this.

I did not loot it first time, more likely it was on my 3 500 catch.

Hope never dies, and you will have it if you keep on trying.

Do not loose hope, that's the key, and have fun while trying, do not hesitate to loose some catch as you discuss with other, they are not your enemies, it is independant event, so they will not loot yours but theirs.

(though I do have to agree it is so much easier to agree if you see no one achieving this as you cast your 3 499th catch. :=) ).

I did 483 casts in Cantrips and Crows, did not catch him, and gave up, Did it another day for aprox 200 casts in same place, still did not catch him. GL to those who try to catch him.

My 483 casts took about 1hr 30min, and the 200 casts the next day took about 45min.

I have just finished this with my second level 80. With the first one I got it by accident when doing the daily by Cantrips. A real bonus. The second alt. I set out to do it. I gave up counting casts but I think it was between 850-900 (spread over 3 days). I had done about 30 casts into the third day when it dropped. As others have said definitly a luck thing.

By the way, both done with auto loot on with no problems.

Hey guys, caught it within 10 minutes. I went to Cantrips & Crows and stood on the dock to the left of the fisherman in the boat.I stood on the upper left corner of the dock, and aimed more towards the left so that the bobber would hit right up against the wall. My skill was 370 (+135). Used Seth's fising pole, had a fishing hat, and a glow worm lure.

Why there? My logic is that the bobber has to land in "The Underbelly". Just like how people can catch it in the Dalaran Fountain is because their bobber landed in The Underbelly. So even though you are standing in Cantrips & Crows, your bobber is landing in The Underbelly.

I just caught mine at the Cantrips and Crows Tavern. Only about 20 or so casts, but I was to the right of the tavern. I had Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole (+25 fishing), a +100 lure, and the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat that you get from the fishing dailies, which added +5. So total I was at 580 fishing.

I must be a lucky one... I fished the Giant Sewer Rat in 15 casts. I was on the docks in The Cantrips and Crow Tavern. My fishing is 380 and I had a Big Iron Fishing Pole (+20 fishing) with a Bright Bauble (+75 fishing).

I got this last night after fishing for about 2 hours total. I am a grand master fisherman and I was using simply a iron fishing pole and the sparkly beads you can buy. Ironically enough, I caught the rat without any buffs (I wasn't paying attention to my buff running out.) But my fishing was not over 400 unbuffed. So keep at it, you can do it.

I was on the docks at the Cantrips and Crow Tavern. Seems to be a lucky spot.

... and I got it in the Black Market so it most likely doesn't matter where in the sewers you fish for it.
I fished for it mostly in Cantrips & Crows (first 3-400 casts) Then I moved to the Black Market and some 50+ casts later I got it.

I suspect every skillpoint in fishing you can get matters. I had 655 fishing skill when i caught it.
Also got http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27388 a few days ago after 30-40 minutes (not gotten the ach yet... have 2 more tries). Had fishing at 500+ when i got it

Don't even bother trying to cast redemption on a drowned rat, it doesn't work. ;)

Just got mine today! I know several of people, who fished the GIANT rat up from the ramp right to the inn (when you're facing the inn) - which also is where I got my rat.

I've now been fishing for a grand total of 9.5 hours.... i've watched 5 people get the achievement (one of whom had fishing at lvl 9... NINE)... so i know there's no problem with the spot (cantrips & crows)...

I'm slowly losing the will to live, but it's at the point now where i've invested so much time, i can't QUIT!

Ok I tried at the docks at the bar for sometime. Kept getting fish. So started fishing in different spots under the bar.

I saw a rat running around and wondered if that had something to do with it so tried fishing under where the path it takes.

After a while I noticed I was getting a lot of Drowned Rat and partially eaten fish from one particular spot so I kept fishing there. Got the giant rat 10 mins after in that spot. :D

All in one day. Old Crafty, Crawdad and the rat. :)

figured I'd skill up my fishing in the Dalaran sewers since it's pretty quiet down there - after skilling up from 150ish to 251 skill I caught this guy. You don't have to be capped out on your fishing to get it as I was only at 341 after lure and rumsey's lager.

I have been fishing for about 20+ hours with over 2200 casts, i have been in Catrips, Circle, Black Market, and the Fountain (even completed the three Coin achievements during this). I use the Underbelly Elixir and with my lures and gear i am at 450+185 so i dont think it is a level issue. I am almost to the point where i dont even care if i get this achievement anymore, but not quite done trying yet.

finally after 3 days in the sewers i got it.
now here are my statistics...

aproximatly 20 hours of only fishing, 9 hours one day, 6 or 7 the next day, and the third day like 2 hours.

i fished all the time in the same spot after reading the posts here, cantrips and crows, on both ends of the dock there.

i fished like:

300 sewer carps
100 magic eaters
30 or 40 empty vials
like 30 pieces of junk (partially eaten fish, drowned rat, tattered cloth....)
5 enchanted vials
10 leaded vials
bet. 5 or 6 cristal and imbued vials
1 giant rat

I decided to do the Dalaran fishing daily today. I don't do it often. It was Jewel of the Sewer. I got the rat on my first cast. I was kinda surprised. Maybe this quest increase the drop rate of getting items. I'm not sure about it tho.

it took me about 3 days to get this little sucker. the first day i spent at least six or seven hours fishing in cantrips and crows and all i got was pure crap.

after reading all the posts i assumed this was the best spot to get him. the third day i spent at least 15 min fishing at the end of the dock where the little boat is and then i switched to the other end and got it in my third or fourth cast. what a luck!

so people do what i did nd just put on a movie, start casting like crazy and just listen to the splash sound when u catch something.

on fishing in general you can no longer lose a fish at any lvl or location
and u have to loot something for it to be considered as caught this detail jiped
me out of a few coins from the fountain cause the buff from the gold coin wore off the moment i caught it

Just caught the rat with my lvl 19 twink hunter after 989 casts, 3 days of fishing at Cantrips & Crows.

You don't have to be in the Dalaran sewers to fish this up. I just got mine fishing at the fountain. Hah, I wasn't even paying attention when I clicked on it, I was fishing for the last gold coin. About 30 minutes fishing, up comes the rat, but no gold coin. :(

Just got him less then 5 mins ago on Muradin. Now I don't know if it helps you to have maxed fishing, but all I had was a strong fishing pole (+5) and an Aquadynamic Fish Attractor (+100). My fishing Skill was at 307/375. So my fishing would have been 480. No hat, nothing fancy...and this might make some of you cringe....I got him on my 4th cast. Now I will be the first to say...THIS IS NOT COMMON what so ever! I got him after weeks and weeks of trying. I had given up and had nothing to do today so figured I could try for just a second and BAM! my giant rat friend appeared! Good luck!

Got this now with 450 fishing skill; Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole and using Bright Baubles (445 skill total), at the dock with the fishing supply trader. Took about 35 minutes of fishing.

Note: it's pure 525+ fishing for no "get aways" and luck (RNG).

Wooo! Just caught it! I was fishing in the Eventide fountain for my last pesky gold coin for the achievement. Cast landed in the far right back corner near the wall, & I caught the Giant Sewer Rat! Achievement was given as soon as I looted the rat, not upon "using" it.

FYI: I'm at 450/450 fishing skill, had a Glowworm on pole for +100 skill, & was under the influence of a Lucky buff from tossing a Gold coin back into the fountain. Was using Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole.

I am not sure if this means anything or if it is just coincidence. I have been farming this little bast*** off an on for the past couple of months. More than 2,000 casts at Catnips and Crows. I got the "Corroded Jewelry" daily today and caught this bugger on the second cast. Next stop, turtle mount city!

ok so I love achievements for starters and got my daily fishing for corroded jewelry and thought.... might as well see what my chances are of finding this rat thingy....

so i read all these comments and got utterly demoralized with people who said i farmed for 29 hours and fished up 3.8k fish and never got it.

I just got it on my second cast! fishing just off the dock in underbelly. Got my jewelry on the 5th cast! lucky me. 410 or so fishing with a fish hook (+100 fishing)

I caught the rat yesterday morning.

Started with 448 fishing skill, with Weather Beaten Fishing Hat, Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole, 2 Glow Worms (+100 fishing for 60 minutes)

Total fishing time (from first cast to when I looted the rat) - 1 hour 27 minutes

Spent the first hour in Circle of Wills, then moved over to the dock in Catnips + Crows, reeled the rat in while on the dock

I started for this quest probably when fishing was near 150. I finally got it at 497 by fishing off the pier in Cantrip and Crows. I've spent several weeks off and on working on my fishing skill solely in the Dalaran underbelly so I could kill two birds with one stone (get the achievement and also up my fishing skill).

I made sure I was using nightcrawlers or something so I had extra fishing skill, obviously. It just takes a lot of time and annoyance, as it is a very rare drop. Unlike one poster above, I did get a confirmation box to accept the rat item, but I didn't have auto-loot on. It's just like any other item that drops.

Just got it on my 37th cast, at 46, 45 facing West. 485 skill +25 for the pole, got it just after my Aquadynamic lure wore off. Nice that it also gave me my 15th companion too. I had auto-loot on, no problems there.

I was due some luck for this, I've done thousands of casts in Org and haven't got Old Crafty yet!

02/26/2011 at 410 PM EST - Daggerspine. Thanks to all the directions from the previous posts. I stood right behide Marcia Chase the Dal Fishing Trainer and fished the left side of the fountain. I got this after about 250 casts at the Cantrips & Crows @ 525 skill and I may or may not have had the +100 Aquadymatic Fish Attractor on (really don't know if it had run out). I really wasn't paying attention. However, I did get an achievement bar through hooking it and didn't have to press anything for a BOP.

Fished this up from the Eventide fountain near the fishing trainer. Spent quite a lot of time and am a gold coin away from The Coin Master, and got this little surprise before it. Just to confirm that it can in fact be caught from there, just as long as your fishing hook lands near the rocks/close to edges. All in all it might be tedious if your fishing hook starts landing anywhere but near the rocks or edges, but if you dont mind going for two achievements at once, it would be an ideal spot. Just got him & fished for about 90 minutes..but after months & months of trying. I'm here to report that i had auto-loot enabled & had zero problem.

Apparently, now, when you fish him up (with auto loot) you automatically get the achievement. Which means if you DONT have auto-loot enabled, when you looted him (obviously) you will get the acheivement. However! You still have to right click to learn him; just as with any other pet =)

i was in Cantrips & Crows when i got him.

A small tip i heard & would like to pass on (im NOT sure if theres ANY merit to this whatsoever, but i when i did this, i fished him up with my 1st time trying this trick :)

i've HEARD that if you target the "Giant Sewer Rat" that hangs out in the Arena area & then go fish in the underbelly of course (be sure you keep him as your target while fishing for him!) that it supposedly increases your chances! Hope this can help someone!

After 22 hours of fishing on and off for a few days to finish 硬幣達人 achievement, I decided that I might as well go for the 我聞到巨大的老鼠 while I was already in town before heading over to Ironforge. It took me about an hour to catch him with these statistics:

I just finally got it in Cantrips after 2065 catches, did some at black market think approx 100 or so. Had skill 525 + 30 from fishing pole..All I can say hang in there its quite sweet

I was fishing for coins in the fountain and didn't know about this achievement. I received the rat but thought it was some kind of fishing booster because of the icon it had. I didn't even think twice and sold it... I realized what I did after I had sold back everything in my bags and it was too late to take it back.

for 這下逃不掉了 and 我聞到巨大的老鼠 achievements i found my self an "easy" and less boring way to farm, i use the "wowvid" addon(is an addon that allow u to watch movies/episodes that u have downloaded on your pc in game) and turning off the music from wow so the only thing i mostly hear is my fishing pole when i catch something, also i put my fishing keybinding on one of my mouse's keybindings
my point is that (at least for me) to watch a movie/episode while fishing make my life realy easier =)

Can be achieved if the 巨大下水道老鼠 is found in the new 奇特神秘背袋 (Satchel of Exotic Mysteries). You can find it on one char, mail the bag to another char and the char that actually loots it from the satchel will get the achievement.
NOTE: You must have auto-loot turned off (permanently from Interface OR temporary by pressing SHIFT by default) to take a look in the bag without looting the pet.

The 巨大下水道老鼠 also drops from 古布的漁獲 in new Zul Gurub strangely enough. When you loot it you get the achievement. I wonder when Gub was last in Dalaran sewers? Maybe the Rat got bored of Dalaran as nobody visits anymore. We'll never know.

I got it after about 1.900 casts, average of 200 per hour: 4,5 hours the first day and nothing, same the second day, the third day like 30 mins and I got it.

I almost always fished in cantrips & crows, at the end of the dock, and anyway I was there when I got it.

If statistics (0,2% drop rate) are correct, you can get it in 500 attempts if you have a normal luck; if you are unlucky you can go up to 2-3 times that, in my case almost 4.

To whoever is still looking for it, the only thing I can say is: "never give up", 500 attempts are the minimum if you're not particularly lucky.

I had tried over a long period of time to catch this on my main toon with no luck (same toon that did get lucky enough to fish up Mr. Pinchy on my 4th cast and got the Magical Crawdad Box on 1st wish). This morning I got the Rat on my 6th cast for Jewel of the Sewers daily quest. Location as Circle of Wills. Happy fishing!

I actually got this achievement on one of my characters who doesn't even have fishing. I was tank in a random Rise of The Zandalari heroic and this 巨大下水道老鼠 was in the 奇特神秘背袋. When I learned how to summon this companion I got the achievement as well.

I just got the acheivement " I smell a giant rat". Fished in the "circle of wills". Targeted the friendly rat that is surrounded by four turtles, then fished away from them but casting toward the group. My hook landed in the green circle of the giant rat. Got the acheivement on the second cast.

I got this while fishing coins in the Dalaran fountain. At first I didn't understand how that was possible, but after fishing more coins I noticed that when you throw the bait in the edge of the fountain, you get the same loot as in the Sewers. In other words, I was pretty god damn lucky.

This is now possible to get through doing a dungeon through Call to Arms: Tank/Healer. You often get a vanity pet in your extra bag, instead of a potion or flask, along with your 50-100 gold.

I got the Giant Rat pet, and the achievement, despite never fishing for it.

Reading the previous comments while visiting Dalaran for the first time (level 60) I thought "what the heck" and did some fishing while waiting for my husband to log in. Fishing at level 375, jewelled pole (+30), so I bought the fish attractor from the vendor there (+100).
Had snorted at the idea that fishing into the green circle around the rat would make any difference...but did it anyway ;)
About 10 minutes later I got the pet and the achievement! Sounds like voodoo...but it worked for me.

Is that unusual? I have Fishing Skill 450. I'm using the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole. I have extra mods of +35.

So why aren't I catching ANYTHING?

Took about 35 minutes of fishing today to finally get this sucker for the first time ever (through casual fishing of course!).
Stood on the dock next to Angelo and Sebastian outside Cantrips & Crows and fished the rat up after a total of :

7 crystal vials
8 partially eaten fish
50 sewer carp
3 drowned rats

I started at 484 fishing with the jeweled fishing pole (+30 skill)
glow worm lure attachment (+100 skill),
and drank Captain Rumsey's Lager (+10 skill)

if any of that matters. Happy fishing to anyone trying! :)

after a few different times of trying and failing, I got my giant sewer rat tonight ! It took me all of 10 casts to catch him. My fishing is maxed and I use the Kala'uk fishing pole without any lures. Now if I could just get that elusive little sea turtle I will be a happy girl ! posted a screen shot as well =) I hope you all get your giant rat soon !

I tried it again yesterday since not fishing for about 8 months and it only took me 10 minutes to fish it!
While 8 months ago I was there everyday and was getting slightly irritated that everyone around me got the achievement. Anyways I'm happy now :)

Just got mine today. I fished yesterday about 300 casts and no rat. Today i was waiting for random bg and after 70 casts i got it.

Jeweled fishing pole + hood + 75 lure = 630 fishing skill approximately.

Strangely enough, a friend of mine started fishing after me and got it too after about 50 casts.

Maybe Blizzard changed the drop rate ?

I got the rat on my 6th cast on my level 19 twink druid. Just a reminder, you don't really need a particular fishing skill to get the rat, fishing skill is now only useful in catching actual fish vs junk. right before getting the rat i managed to get my titanium seal of dalaran too.

Figured I'd share little story for your amusement-
So my work got cancelled for the rest of the night and I'm home thinking "Oh boy, 6 hours straight of WoW, I should grind something out- I know, the Dalaran sewer rat!" So I head to the sewers, plop down on my duff, and start casting.
30 minutes into it, along comes a human warrior chick and starts casting right next to me(i'm horde). Rude, but whatevs, I'll just point my casts away from where she's casting.
10 minutes later, she gets it. Are you f-ing kidding me? I wanted to kick her right in her stupid lucky face, but instead I '/clap' her, she thanks me and leaves, and I'm back on my duff...casting.
Another hour passes and all I can think about is just how I got robbed a sewer rat. 2 hours into my endevour, 180ish trash and fish in my bag, no rat...I'm done.
Maybe some other time.

For me, this was a creature of TIME CONSUMING DOOM. Spent ~ 8.5/9 hours straight fishing him up. I began to despair about halfway through and for a time went casting all about the Underbelly, becoming more angsty and paranoid about drop rates with each cast.

This is NOT recommended, to say the least

Sitting in one spot and hoping Lady Luck is with you seems to be your best bet. I turned my sound effects up, put on a book on tape, procured many a good snack throughout, and cast until I found this rat. I had horrid luck, unfortunately.

But for all you still fishing...stick it out! he's there somewhere. Good luck!

buying the pet from BMAH WILL infact give you the achievement, just as if you get it from satchel of mysteries!
just letting everyone know!
buying it from regular ah will not give the achievement, because you are buying it as a batlle pet, not a companion pet, buying it from BMAH will give the achievement when you 'loot' the mail (before you 'learn' it)

I've been farming this one for years on different characters and different servers.

I finally got it today after my boyfriend fished it out of the Dalaran fountain whilst he was trying to get 硬幣達人 (he's only got 卡特拉娜‧普瑞斯托女士的金幣 to go) and I thought I would go and fish in the sewers while I waited for him to finish.

Took me about 30 mins outside of Catnips and Crows and I caught the following:

14 噬法魚
5 水晶瓶
4 被吃了一半的魚
1 淹死的老鼠
1 巨大下水道老鼠

I still find it a little funny that I got the rat before he got his coin...

So.. doing the math, overall chance of one within the next:

2mins (5 casts): 1.5% (Hell Lucky)
6mins (20 casts): 6% (Damn Lucky)
15mins (50 casts): 14% (Lucky)
30mins (100 casts): 26% (Somewhat Lucky)
1h (200 casts): 45% (Pretty Typical)

Like many others, this started as a small side goal.. fish while in the LFD / LFR queue etc.. and much like any of the other "small" wow goals has developed into full blown "THIS WILL BE MINE".

Logged out last night with about 200 casts.. I'm now around 1000 casts straight. Can honestly say my sanity is dwindling away... good luck to those like me still chasing this Rodent!

According to wowhead, the chance of getting this item is about 1 in 3000. You can make about 30 attempts in 9 minutes, so expect to spend 900 minutes or15 hours trying to catch this rat. Off course you can be lucky. But you can also be unlucky.

So I am standing at cantrips & crows and i think to myself, where would I hang out if I would be a Rat?
I am looking around and see a hole in the wall with a kind of metal screen, interesting.
Just a fishing raft brought me close enough. Here is what happend.

It just took 73 cast with 705 Fishing Skill and the Raft. What a day. Earlier today i catched the 15 Pound Mud Snapper in under 180 casts. Looks like this "Catching-Rare-Rare-Fish" Achievements work better on 600+ Skill Level or the raft provides a unique spot to catch rare fish.

PS: Some days ago I did the Lurker Achievement in 2 casts. (705 Fishing)
PPS: Becoming Nat Peagle's Best Friend provides you with tools to rech a fishing skill of 800.

Started it at 8 AM, fished all day long (with max skill:600 - fishing pole:30 - Sharpened Hook,Baubles,Worm,etc:100 => 730 skill), but after the 850th cast, I went for some beer to calm me down and fresh me up. I don't have a good time estimate since I was fishing on and off over a couple days.
Location: Cantrips and Crows, end of the dock.
Fishing Stats: Level 700 fishing.

Fished:

Ok, I'm gonna give you some hope. With 805 skill (700 + 30 from 骨製釣魚竿 + 75 from 明亮的小珠)... 46 catches all together.

You can use the number of 噬法魚s you've caught as an indicator. I finally caught my 巨大下水道老鼠 after having caught exactly 176 噬法魚s. Good luck!

Didn't take too long with combined fishing skill of 855 (700 with Dragon Fishing Pole + Bright Baubles + Underbelly Elixir which turned me into a Tuskarr). 147 casts in total and many Sewer Carp. Don't give up!

Another data point for you stats fans: Fished for about three hours in the Black Market area. Got 157 magic eaters before getting the achievement for the rat. Hope that helps encourage you.

So, I know a few of you have stated that you've spent many, many hours on trying to fish up this rat, but I feel I might be on the very unfortunate side of all of this. I'm over 2600 attempts and still NO rat. I'm starting to get disheartened and feeling like it's never gonna come... Anyone have an experience this bad and held out to actually get it? After spending about 2000 casts in the black market I decided to move to the docks.

End of the dock on the left side in between the two fire totems in The Cantrips and Crows Tavern.
Total Cast: 2047
Skill: 1230 = 800 (Base Level) + 200 (Worm Supreme Bait) + 100 (Ephemeral Fishing Pole) + 80 (Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat) + 50 (Underbelly Elixir)
Sewer Carp: 1114 ---- 54.4%
Magic Eater: 514 ---- 25.1%
Crystal Vial: 198 ---- 9.7%
Drowned Rat: 110 ---- 5.4%
Partially Eaten Fish: 110 ---- 5.4%
Giant Sewer Rat: 1 ---- 0.00049%

I was really unlucky and instead of a standard ratio of ~0.02% chance I had a ~0.0005% chance.

Total Time: ~12 hours of continuous fishing

TIPS: Don't give up and just keep going at it, even if it seems like you are super unlucky, like I was.

When fishing in the Underbelly in Dalaran, you have a chance to catch 巨大下水道老鼠, which awards the achivement 我聞到巨大的老鼠.

Note that the items you fish up, with the exception of 水晶瓶, only stack to 20. However, if you fish from the pier at Cantrips and Crows, there's a fishing supplier, 安傑羅‧佩斯卡多, which enables you to conveniently vendor the trash if you don't have a lot of bag space.

397 No 下水道鯉魚

82 No 水晶瓶

In total, it took me 737 casts, using an alt with a skill level of approximately 650 to 800.

I've just caught the Giant Sewer rat, specifically in Cantrips & Crows.

I first started fishing in the Black Market, and after reading on here that other people had caught theirs in C&C and Circle of Wills respectively, I thought I'd try here.

In the Black Market: 213 casts
Sewer Carp: 127 (59%)
Magic Eater: 52 (24%)
Crystal Vial: 17 (7%)
Partially Eaten Fish: 9 (4%)
Drowned Rat: 8 (3%)

Cantrips & Crows (end of the dock): 99 casts

Magic Eater: 24 (24%)
Partially Eaten Fish: 6 (6%)

I usually do about 50-100 casts at a time in a specific area when farming, caught on 99/100 in the one go at C&C. I'm not saying it's a definite, because it's been confirmed you can catch the rat from either of these three areas in the Underbelly, but it's worth mixing it up every now and then.

Some people in Blizzard Dev team have serious issues, imho they're a bunch of sadist spoiled nerds who love to waste people's time, after farming this god damn rat for days, it dropping doesn't make me feel better at all.
They could just implement a code which increases drop rate as the player farms it, (ex: give the player a temporary internal buff which increases chance for rare items to drop for 0.01 or so). But no! They HAVE to torture you, mess with your dopamine circuits :D... Losing love for this game everyday...

So ive been fishing for this for ages, over 1200 casts at this point, a female Orc runs up casts 3 times and BOOM got the rat!

It took me 3153 casts, which although im now happy and i have it, i have to say that's ridiculous!
I was fishing in Cantrips & Crows and had only cast from the left of the dock next to the vendor or left torch.
i moved to the right torch and casted close to the wall, and got the giant rat after 5 casts!

I completed the achievement on Moonrunner at 9:44 PM (Mountain Time) on 26 February 2020 after 935 casts. I took a break after 775 casts, came back after 10 minutes, and completed the achievement.

If you are using TomTom, the coords I stood at for the duration are 60.86, 12.61 in Old Dalaran's sewers.

After 6,400+ attempts from the pier at Cantrips & Crows (Northrend Dalaran, Underbelly), I moved over across the sewers to 65, 13 (The Black Market) and caught it in the waters in front of Darahir within 165 casts.

Total 6,578 casts. I can now finally move on...

Northrend Fishing 75+5/75 only using the Strong Fishing Pole sold by Angelo Pescatore who's standing right there on the docks. No additional lures or buffs or anything.

Additional information that definitely does NOT matter but worth mentioning for the superstitious-
I used the Draconium Fisherfriend (+6 fishing) for the first 5k casts and never got it, bought the Strong Fishing Pole (+5 fishing) and got it in about <500.

It took me roughly 45 minutes and 190 casts today at the end of the dock by Angelo (fishing supplies vendor) at Cantrips and Crows (Dalaran Underbelly). I had Master's Wildercloth Fishing Cap (level 4), Aquatic Shades, and Khaz'gorite Fisherfriend (level 5) equipped. I had an oversized bobber on to also get the Discombobberlated achievement (permanent oversized bobber toy). Once I got the permanent Oversized Bobber I applied it instead of the temporary one. I started with Northrend Fishing at level 0 and ended at level 75.

Got this achieve in Northrend Dalaran Underbelly today - set a timer and fished constantly for an hour and 14 minutes. Unless I'm lucky, the battle pet Giant Sewer Rat is Rare by default. He's a chungus and I love him.

Today I finally got “lucky” – anglin’ in various places, so I guess it’s just random luck, anywhere in 城底區 (Old Dalaran).

Took about 4h and ~1000 casts; it was the 2nd or 3dt sitting around that many tries. Be patient, do something in parallel, try another day!

Got around 5g from sellloot, which is a blazing 2s per minute. Catches in particular:

Can’t say I like 下水道鯉魚 anymore, which accounts for approx. 45.7% of all catches, around double that of 噬法魚 (22.3%) and 雜草 (21.6%).
生病的魚, 漂流木, 被吃了一半的魚, 破爛的衣服, 淹死的老鼠, 糾纏的釣魚線 appear on ca. 3.6–5% of casts.
淡水蝸牛, 舊靴子, 岩塊 are very rare! (around 1‰)
Also got 82× 水晶瓶, which would cost 13s12c at the vendor.
Got a 可重複使用的超大浮標 toy early on from 超乎常理.
And of course my favorite, 巨大下水道老鼠.

As for 2024 i can confirm that we can still fish that "Giant Rat".
It took me 3,109 casts and 24 hours spread into 4 days at Cantrips & Crows.

Best advice i can say is get "Oversized Bobber" and put a good show on the side and it will go fast.

As of 10.2.5, you still get the achievement if you get it from the Black Market Auction House, not the regular Auction House.

After several years of attempting, I decided I was getting this achievement no matter what.

So, I sat down on the docks at Cantrips & Crows and started casting. It took several sessions of 500+ casts over the next 24 hours, but 1,965 casts later, I had my achievement.

The following was my haul for those casts:

Important to note that this pet can be purchased from the AH, but it doesn't count towards the achievement. You have to actually fish it up in order to get the achievement. I fished it up after about 2 hours 15 mins with around 500ish casts. Good luck.

Day 2 so far im at 2198 attempts and no rat -_- this thread gave me hope id get it before 2k..yet here i am steadily surpassing that.. will update if it ever drops till then ill be camped up at the Cantrips and crow docks!

Day 3 3350 attempts and still no rat...im pretty sure i have gotten enough magic eaters and sewer carps to feed an entire city by now lol

Day 4- still no rat 4100 attempts im beginning to think it s been removed from the game haha
although i HAVE fished up plenty of drowned ones. hopefully updating will give me some extra luck and this torture will be over soon..hah

DAY 5- 5346 casts later i have my rat.. i am free from this torment.
