The tooltip for Mastery: Nature's Guardian is misleading because "partially absorbed" attacks aren't simply any attacks that are partly but not wholly absorbed.

There is a hidden mechanic that calculates a "partially absorbed" attack as any attack in which between 20% to 100% of the attack is absorbed. When ever an attack hits you, and less than 20% of that attack is absorbed, then the remaining portion of that attack will produce a new shield.

Let's say the last attack against you produced a shield worth 1,000 damage:

If the next attack against you would do 1,000 damage or less, the attack is fully absorbed, you take no damage, and no new shield is produced. (This is a "Fully Absorbed Attack")
If the next attack against you would do 1,001~5,000 damage, the first 1,000 dmg are absorbed, and you take the remaining 1~4000 damage, and that damage does not produce a shield. (This is a "Partially Absorbed Attack")
If the next attack against you would do 5,001 or more damage, the first 1,000 dmg are absorbed, and you take the remaining >4000 damage, and that damage produce a new shield based on the >4000 damage you took.

The other comment here is incorrect in how this works.

It is true that Primal Tenacity can produce a shield in certain conditions even if the attack was partially absorbed. The 20% number is even correct... just applied incorrectly.

How it works: if a hit would produce a shield that the current shield is 20% of or less, the shield is still produced.

Let's say you have 20% mastery. If you have a 1k damage shield and get hit for 10k damage, normally a 10k hit would produce a 2k shield. The current shield is more than 20% of 2k, so no shield is produced.

Now let's keep that 20% mastery and 1000 damage shield, but say you get hit by a 50k damage hit. A 50k damage hit would normally produce a 10k damage shield. The current shield is less than 20% of 10k, so the hit does produce a shield.

The easiest way to think of it is "If a hit would produce a shield five times stronger than my current shield, that shield will still be produced". It is a way to keep a minor add hitting you suddenly screwing you out of a ton of mitigation from a boss's attack.

The moral is: the more mastery, the better.

This is technically the most powerful mastery for tanks in terms of what it is, because more health without the downside of taking more mana to heal is fantastic. In practice however, both the default and scaling with stat value of this is incredibly low, which is unfortunate, because when it was first introduced in legion beta, the value was twice as good, which meant mastery had great value for bears. Nowadays, mastery is nice, but not something you'd need a huge amount of. Which is a shame, Guardian druids were supposed to be this big fat wall of health but that's largely Blood death knights now.

Your Nature's Guardian healed You 0 Nature. (374 Overhealed) every 3 or so sec.

No idea why.
