Just wanted to remind you all. If you are in a group and kill the mob you all complete the quest.

So while your all stood around waiting for the spawn try to fill a group. It will make it go much faster for you all

It took me two hours of camping him to finally kill him. The quest itself is not hard, the hard part is the 50+ players trying to kill him at the same time.

At the time of this post 19:48 killed the yeti at co ords 30:60 - saw him 5 mins later at 30:53 - good idea to group - a bonus if you leathercraft - loads of skins available

I got it first time it spawned near me by...

Creating a macro of /target The Abominable Greench
Adding the macro to by toolbar with a key assigned to it (eg "0")
Waiting at one of the spawn points and when it spawns
Using the shortcut assigned to the above macro and making sure I got the 1st hit with a ranged attack

Add coords 39.60 as a respawn. This is where I killed him.
Also note that he turns you into a snowman incapacitating you (minimal, and an easy kill none-the-less).

I had no problem with this on my hunter. I just put my pet on aggresive & he got the tag! I changed the pet to passive to allow the members of my group to get in range to get credit for it when a 70 warlock came & dotted him.

Solo'd as a level 36 Holy Priest. MC'd the yeti next to him and got beat on a while, got the Greench to 97% health, then bubbled and hammered on him with Holy Fire, then Curse of Weakness, SWP, Mind Blast and Smited over and over :)

Fairly easy...Just took a bit of clearing the other yeti's out.

Your impression of this quest depends on when you do it. If you're with the crowd that tries to get it done on day 1 of Winter Veil, chances are you'll be camping out in Alterac for awhile. It can be frustrating. After a few days, however, things will ease up for the poor Greench. Before his inevitable gankage, he'll breathe in a little of that clean mountain air, maybe scratch the itch that's been bothering him for the last ten spawns. By the midpoint of the holiday, he'll have enough time to play some pinochle, and maybe even a game or two of Monopoly.

The point is if you put off doing the quest, you probably won't have to wait very long before you get your chance to ruin his day. There's something to be said for going with the early crowd, though. I had a blast running around throwing snowballs and otherwise hanging out with everyone else who was there. I imagine PvP servers offer a more sinister kind of fun, too.

If you are a hunter, use Beast tracking. Greench is easy to find as he's the only beast among humanoid Yetis.

He's physically larger (+20%?) than any of the other yetis, as well as being a more dull gray, so he stands out pretty easily.

I'd say that he was an easy mob to solo. But, well... lvl 37 elite vs lvl 70 mage? He might as well have been Hogger.

And an elite 37 vs. a 32 Priest? I was able to kill the L36 ogres and L34 yeti. This pwned me. Resisted everything, and I could not hit him worth a damn with staff or dagger.

The Quick Facts box currently says this quest is for both factions, but this entry is actually for the Alliance version. The Horde version is identical, except you hand it in to Kaymard in Orgrimmar, rather than Wulmort in Ironforge.

Just killed him this year - (2008) spawn point was 33.69 off the snowy area - where it becomes dirt.

Just killed him myself. i confirm the above co-rdinates. And if you are in a low populater ally/horde server better do it now cause later on it will become Wintergrasp 2 (without tenaciy buffs.) Happy Winter Veil Everyone.

i camped a spot for 30 mins. i was lucky enough to be grouped with a fellow hunter. we set explosive traps,over and over till he spawned. worked like a charm.

There are about 5 different spawn locations. After much PvP eventually we camped a spot for about 5 minutes and he spawned, we tapped, we left. Worst part of the Winterveil Achievements so far.

As a leatherworker the good thing about this quest is the number of skinable Yeti bodies that are just left lying about in the snow. I must have made over 50 heavy leather in just under an hour.

They have certainly lowered the spawntime, he spawned on the same spot about 15 sec after I killed him, and I counted five RAWWWWR in a couple of minutes.

So this quest just got a whole lot less aggravating!

How I did it:
Formed a group of all the allies I could see.
We spread out.
I found him, tagged him, then stopped attacking to give others a chance to close with me.

Now, I'm a prot-warrior-72, so he didn't really damage me. If you're level 40, this may not work well.
But, seriously, if you're level 60+ and can't hold out with the level 40 elites damage for a few minutes...

seems the increased his spawn rate, I was trying to do the quests 2 hours ago and it took him 45 minutes to spawn but when I tried again just now he spawned 3 times within 5 minutes

Did it on first day of Winter Vail on realm Suramar as a level 80 warrior. Found him at 30,29 and it was a full house in alterac. No one knew he spawned here was just wondering and found him. 2 shotted him very easy quest.

Just killed him at 40, 67. There was a Tauren Druid that was right there as he spawned and got the kill. Roughly about 2 secs later another Greench spawned in the exact same spot and i got the kill. Happy hunting everyone.

The spawn rate appears to have been upped this year and it is no longer a 5 minute spawn.

I killed him at 33,69 and immediately headed back towards Southshore and he spawned again in front of me on the way out.

You can use Tracker Snacks to find him. The yeti's are humanoids but The Abominable Greench is a beast.

I ate my Tracker Snack near spawn point and he was the only dot that lit up. I didn't have to use /tar. nice and lazy.

He does respawn instantly, however after killing him 6 times, he has yet to drop the stolen treats. I dropped the quest and picked it back up again, no change. Currently have a ticket.

This quest is easiably solo'able if you are 40+, however the spawn time decreases when you are in a group.

Greench can be found in the ruins of alterac, southeast of there is a bunch of yetis, these spread along the bottom half of the mountain, the greench will be somewhere in that area.

He doesnt yell upon spawning this year.

He also has an instant move that stuns you and turns you into a snowman.

If you're having trouble getting it to drop, make sure you're not in a raid. I've had bugs recently where I'll leave a raid, and it still counts me as part of it. Make sure you're not raided and /console reloadui just in case. Ought to drop after that.

Confirmed, 45.43, 38.37 and respawn timer is not bugged, at least not on my realm. He stayed despwn for bout five min when i foud his corpse then respwned like instantly four times after a couple of us killed him. . . .

This quest has been changed as of 4.3. It now appears to be a Daily Group quest, requiring lvl 80 to pick it up. Also, it rewards Stolen Present. Perhaps Blizzard made the Greench into an Un-Instanced Holiday Boss rather than have a LFD thing like previous Holidays.

Edit:Stolen Present will have a chance to contain Lump of Coal, some Justice Points if you are not capped, as well as other assorted holiday pets and toys.

Just did this quest, the guy hits like a truck. Found him at 45,38. Take more than a few friends - he really doesn't like to be killed and puts up a heck of a fight. Not sure if it's because we were in a raid group or not but the completion didn't come up until we all left the group. Happy Greench hunting :)

Oh - and stand too near whilst someone else is doing the quest and you can get hurt too - just incase you were hoping to watch someone else do it first.

Stolen Present gave me Tiny Blue Ragdoll, Crashin' Thrashin' Racer Controller and 24 JP.

Flew to Hillbrad Foothills for a quick kill before I went to work, I was quite surprised that the Grinch had 34m health, luckily for me I was on my rogue, vanish FTW.

I guess it is a raid type boss now, solo him at your own peril.

You can complete the quest even if you're not part of the kill now. Metzen and the sacks are rescuable & lootable for a few minutes after Grinch has been killed, until the respawn.

I killed him with three people. Took a while with that setup. I was tanking on a non-tank geared DK in tanking spec (still gathering that tanking gear), and it seemed I didn't need that much healing. The charges can kill unaware ranged, though.

Greench is now an outdoor boss with over 3 mil HP.
When fighting him, you'll be affected by Shrink Heart. Just move sometimes, it's not really noticeable.
He also has two skills you do need to watch out for, both require you to move away from marked locations:

He does Throw Strange Snowman, after a few seconds snowman will do a chilling AoE - Snow Crash, dealing around 30k damage and freezing everyone around for 6 seconds.
He throws a Christmas tree (Throw Winter Veil Tree), after a few seconds he will do Abominable Crush to trample it, dealing ~100k AoE damage and throwing you in the air a bit, not very high.

While it is possible to solo for some classes (hunter for example), it's hard so I would recommend bringing a normal group with tank and healer.

After he's dead, reindeer Metzen will appear nearby, you can talk to it for the quest. The gifts are near the cave where he spawns.
I'm not sure yet, but I think you can complete the quest even if you didn't participate in the kill and were just nearby.

I just looted the quest item from the cave when someone else had killed the boss and delivered the quest. An an Epic quality dagger dropped from the Stolen Present Container!

The new event goes like this:

You fight The Abominable Greench and he now has over 3 million health! (Note that he looks nothing like his former self "Racksum Greep".)
You do not need to be in the same group as the one that tagged him, simply fight the boss and when he dies you can loot sacks of the stolen goods in the cave (the one right behind him, stuffed with those Christmas trees, presents and what not.) The reindeer will automatically be credited to you, you can always talk to it too if it makes you feel better.
You do not need a tank, a plate DPS can take his hits but I wouldn't solo him because of his large health pool. Still if few in numbers be nice and throw some heal or two on the one taking damage.

It's a daily, each day you do it you have a chance to loot Lump of Coal from the rewarded Stolen Present -good luck and Marry Christmas!

Warning to -solo attempters- as a ret pally.. @46% damage reduction, he hit me for 20k each smack. he also does a freeze and body slam that each do about 22k. You cannot solo unless your some godly blood DK or so.

Blizzard proving they ain't got a clue, again. If you aren't 85 and geared, don't even bother unless you can get a mercy group willing to sit around for 30 minutes.

Maybe they should've figured out a different way of saving Metzen if the achievement's still gonna be part of the meta. I don't think I've ever been this pissed off at Blizzard before.

Not impressed with the level requirement. Went to get on my lvl 78 and cannot. They have made so much end-game requirements that you can't just enjoy the events regardless of level. Did this last year on a lvl 20 and had a great time with others but now most of the achievements for Winter Veil are for 80+ so that leaves alot of players out. Humbug!

Ok. Did today, fairly easy. but several 85's had come, made a raid.... disbanded because cannot do in a raid. He's a ? boss to my 85.... but everyone who was nearby (and since I participated, not sure if only proximity or need to hit him a bit also is needed, but guessing it is). But I was not in primary group. Do not forget to grab your bag near the tree.

I was able to do this quest today on my 85 hunter but none of my other toons can pick it up and I don't know why. I have 2 other high level toons, an 85 and a 70. Any ideas why I can't get the quest on them?

Just did the quest myself, and as long as I got in combat i didn't need to actually hit him.. I flew above all the time, while the horde(I'm ally) killed Greench.

Was able to to this as ret in my pvp spec for the shorter WoG cooldown. Was helped by an ele shaman and a shadow priest. Put up Seal of Light, healed myself with WoG and dps'd normally.

After getting killed in one fell swoop, I read a bit more about the the Greench. I was going to give up on the quest but I saw a bunch of horde level 85 grouping up in front of the boss. I stayed stealthed until they started fighting. I tried to help but wasn't getting any healing (go figure). At any rate, I stepped back when I almost died again but the group finished off the boss. I walked in after they were done and was able to pick up the Stolen Treats and complete the quest.

I have a lvl 85 Paladin but I couldn't solo this. Blizz just has to cater to only super geared people again. I've always hated Blizzard when they did stupid things like this.

You dont have to be in a formal group, you just have to be there near when he is killed.

Alliance and Horde can work together. You dont have to worry about who tags the Greench.

I flew there today, the Greench had just been killed so I Just looted the bags and talked to Metzen. Quest complete.

You have 5 minutes after the boss is killed to loot the presents and talk to Metzen, regardless whether you participated in killing or not.

Also, if you're a hunter with Ghostcrawler as a pet, if you get him close to Metzen, they won't hug or anything. A pity.

Easily solo-able as a hunter. (Level 85, Survival although i have 386 ilvl I believe it will be achievable with a much lower ilvl)

Make sure you don't over aggro your pet (I just used a bear). When he throws a snowball, run away from it around 20-30 yards or so (it will turn into the snowman). When he throws the christmas tree, again run away, he'll then jump over from where ever he was to the tree he just threw.....so you really don't want to be near that tree!

Fire in between running (always make running a priority, as soon as you see the snow/tree being thrown.....move away from it). Doesn't really take long, your health bar should barely move (I think i took around 140 dmg just before he threw the tree.....not enough to even blink at tbh). And if all else fails? Feign death and try again! Good luck guys.

Got to love jealous people who downrate your comment just because they can't solo it!

The Greench is located in Hillsbrad Foothills at 43.6, 41.6. Outside a cave next to the ruins of Alterac.

He has 3,435,680 Health.
Abilities are as follows:

Abominable Crush - Inflicts 97500 to 102500 Physical damage and knocks enemies into the air. And has a 1 Second Cast time.

Cleave - Cleave Which Inflicts 110% of normal melee damage to an enemy and its nearest allies, affecting up to 3 targets.

Shrink Heart - Shrink Heart, Deals periodic damage and slows the attack and casting speeds of nearby enemies. Movement breaks the effect.

Can be done by 2 - 3 DPS no problem! Tank and healer is not needed at all.

Alternatively you can wait around for someone else to kill him and you will get the credit for free'ing Metzen yourself if you stand around.

After the quest is all said and done head your way back to Ironforge and hand in!

You will recieve 8G 27S at level 85 and a Stolen Present.

Stolen Present can contain various items including:

Miniature Winter Veil Tree

Lump of Coal

Blue Clockwork Rocket Bot

Toy Train Set

You can also receive Clockwork Rocket Bot which when learned will award you with Clockwork Rocket Bot.

According to Blizzard you can obtain ANY item from previous years. The Clockwork rocket bot is the only one known for the Feat of Strength.

Dropped in and got the quest from the snowman right after someone just killed the boss. Looted the stolen goods and got a "freed Metzen" notification without doing anything at all. So if you can't solo him and don't have a group, just let someone else kill him for you. Apparently, you don't even have to be there when he dies, just loot while he's dead.

The snowman is there, between the trees, with the quest for you. Especially good if you fly all the way out there without picking up the quest in ironforge.

If u are a melee-class and u want a challenge, try to solo this.

His main damaging abilities are:

1.) Melee swing wich can be resisted or avoided with sufficiant armor/dodge/parry. (13k)
2.) AOE Ice damage wich can be avoided (20-30k)
3.) Abomnible Crush wich can be avoided (80-100k)

* He will use 'Shrink Heart' on u as a debuff, move to end it.
* When he trows a Snowman, keep moving away from the Snowman to avoid the AOE damage.
* The worst is his 'Abomnible Crush'. He will first trow a tree, then jump on it and fling u in the air. Keep moving to avoid it and keep ur eye on the location of the tree. If going backwards is too slow, strafe or run ahead.

I used the open place in front of his cave to backtrack in a circle, passing the mountains and the cave periodicly. Got hit once by 'Abomnible Crush', but managed to heal up. I did it as a Blood DK in dps gear, but looking at the mechanics it should be doable by more classes.

Did this just now on my level 87 Draenei Death Knight in level 25 guild. The Greench was not present so all I had to do was loot a stolen present, talk to Metzen and tell him he's free and done. Received 106,700 XP plus 275 rep each with Ratchet, Booty Bay, Everlook and Gadgetzan.

Careful if you're on a high populated PvP server. The opposite faction WILL gank you. There was a group of 20 not even doing the quest, just killing any lone players. They should really turn PvP off around the cave.

Anyone got a nice idea how to get to our "chap" The Abominable Greench more convenient as an tiny Dwarf?

Sure I know how and where I can plant a Hearthstone, but it is kinda 'dumb' a Horde can use his/her's cloak to get back to the quest giver, but if we use our cloak we'll end up in the wrong City for crying out loud!

Where all your buddies already are having a drink with The Man!, only thing you can do is take a ride on your loyal friend and ride the freakin' trip to the place you wanted to leave when you started this character in the first place to meet our amazing Alliance Smurf.

Yep I really think I need a: One for the Road.

You can make this daily a quick trip by finding a mage with Ancient Tome of Portal: Dalaran. The portal they will open for you drops you in mid-air (so bring your slow-fall spells/trinkets/etc.) over the old Dalaran Crater right next to the Greench daily quest area. (Make sure the portal they use is Ancient Dalaran, not the regular Dalaran!)

This is now VERY easy.
If there's NO Greench, or he's dead, just talk to Metzen the Reindeer to free him :)
Then go and get a stolen present.
I've turned up and assisted the kill and when the Greench's corpse is present and received completion of freeing Metzen.
Also turned up when the Greench was NOT present, talked to Metzen and received the "Free Metzen" part :)
But, if Metzen's not around, then you have to wait for and kill the Greench. Maybe I was just lucky.

If you're in a PVP realm and you can't loot the item, an easy way to do this is to join a PVE realm. Either join a friends realm or find one in the premade finder and join it. :)

For those who have tons of characters level 80+ like myself. You may end up doing the quest multiple times, forgetting which ones have or have not done the quest.

So for people like me, and if you have Horde and Alliance characters here are both scripts.

Alliance:

For some reason, this quest is still handing out the old 2014-15 Stolen Present instead of the new 2015-16 Stolen Present. Perhaps they'll fix it soon?

Edit: At this point it seems pretty clear they've modified the old one instead of rewarding the new one. Lounge Cushions can now be found in the old one, while last year they came from Gently Shaken Gift. Oddly, they did use a new Gently Shaken Gift item for the first time, while this present, which has historically been new every year, was recycled.

Is there a minimum character level for this? I am level 60 on this toon and can not seem to find the quest giver in IF and the snowman does not give it to me either. I was hoping to get the daggers for when I boost with the xpac purchase, but maybe not.

This is way different from other years. First of all I DIED. I am not a tank , i didnt hit first, i just died. He comes out and lowers your health with a yell and i wish I knew what hit me after that. So be warned and just stay back. The graveyard is a 3 to 5 min walk. Felt like forever...
Second there use to be snowballs here, and the snow was white. No balls and brown snow.
They also moved him to in front of the cave.
The one thing that hasnt changed is the fact that the presents take forever to click with everyone there. The time ran out and they vanished on one toon.
To get to IF without a mage> garrison hearth, go to your tower by the mine to Stormshield> IF portal by bank. Hang out until your garrison hearth is ready again.

It's so fun and immersive to fly all the way there as a non-mage alliance character. Especially the hitting invisible walls over the far left side of wetlands while I'm alt-tabbed. So. Fun.

As said before on hunting rares... If youre having issues doing this quest, because lets says Alliance or Horde is camping or youre just the one trying the do the quest at 4am...

Go to the Premade group finder, type Grumpus, Grump.. or something like that and youll surely find someone else trying to finish their quest. Cake.

There is a strange glitch which happened to me to avoid. I got there and for some reason it was phased out and I went in the cave thinking Greech was there. Big mistake. The tree phased in and I couldn't get out! So I was stuck in the cave with the other end of the tree in it. HS was on cd so had to use stuck and got portaled back to garrison to start over. When I got back the tree was in the cave entrance as it should be and I did quest. Just a warning if it happens to you.

if you DIE this will be your most hated quest ever. The graveyard is a 5 min walk and by the time you get back the deer will be gone. If the boss hates you , you will die.

For Legion it's easiest to get there by taking the Portal to Dalaran Crater in Aegwynn's Gallery. Make sure you've got a Goblin Glider with you as you spawn way up in the air!

If you really needed one of those toys or illusions you could just do the following:

-Create a Dwarven Mage via class trial

-As soon as you log in use Teleport: Ironforge and pick up You're a Mean One...

-Fly to Hillsbrad Foothills and complete the quest.

-Use Teleport: Ironforge once again and turn in the Quest (Don't forget to turn in A Smokywood Pastures' Thank You! aswell.)

-After that just delete the character and do steps 1-4 again.

Go to Broken Isles Dalaran, in the middle (the portal room) there is a portal to dalaran crater, take a glider with you as it spawns you mid air and you will fall to your death. but that's the quickest way.

YOU WILL NEED a goblin glider or something to stop your fall on the other side or you WILL DIE. If you can not levitate or slow fall like a priest or mage, you WILL plummet to your DEATH.

In fact, as you mouse over the portals you should see a warning sign in from of the Dalaran Crater Portal that says "WARNING: Drop"

Once you (hopefully) land safely, it is a short flight to the Greench.

Upon testing, my various alts (Plate, mail, leather and clothies) none have thus far died again from the fall when they were at full health using the portal described above They also took NO durability damage to their armor in the fall. (Hot fix?)

Once you (hopefully) land safely, it is a short flight to the Greench.

I've had some guildies not know about the various org teleport cloaks. If you don't have them, I'd highly recommend grabbing them, as this makes this quest go by extremely quickly.

All you have to do is:
1) pop one cloak to go to org and pick up the quest
2) use your new dalaran hearth and take the dal crater portal
3) complete quest
4) pop a second cloak to turn in
5) if you're really in a hurry you can pop the third cloak to bring you directly to the new dal portal

Hope that helps :) You can also use a glider after taking the dal crater portal to speed it up a little more if need be :)

This years winter veil I've done this for 8 days on 16 chars and used 20 level 100 trial toons aswell (weekly cap seems to be 20 for these) in attempt to get Flames of Ragnaros.
No luck. During 10 year anniversary I did 60+ Molten Core runs for this. RNG hates me

148 Daily gifts, 36 annual gifts. No flames of ragnaros. Pretty much got everything else that you can get from the box multiple times ^^

Metzen hangs around for 2 minutes after the Greench is killed. If anyone chats him, and you're on the quest, you get credit.
The bags hang around for 5 minutes after the Greench is killed. You have time to wait to minimize the chance of horde ganking you.
The Greench respawns 5:30 after it was last killed.

This is how you farm Savage Gift and Stolen Present efficiently on multiple toons. Characters must be level 100 or higher and have a level 3 garrison.

Park all of your eligible toons in their garrisons.

Make sure you're hearthed in either Ironforge if you're Alliance and Orgrimmar if you're Horde or in your faction's Shrine in Pandaria.

Start each day by picking up the 4 Winter Veil dailies in your garrison

Grumpus
Menacing Grumplings
What Horrible Presents!
Where Are the Children?

from Pizzle if you are Horde or Almie if you are Alliance

It's about a 5 minute flight to Grumpus (Frostfire Ridge 45, 28) from the Alliance garrison. If it's your first time there make sure and pick up the Bloodmaul Slag Mines flight path at 51, 21 to make the later runs a bit less monotonous. For Horde it takes about a minute to fly there from your garrison.

Complete the 4 dailies.

It will usually take about 5 minutes to do all 4 quests, depending on the player traffic. *NOTE* - As of 5am maintenance on 12/19/2017 everything here scales with you so no one shotting the mobs any more, and the trash that dropped from them seems to either not drop for 110's or the rate is so low it doesn't even register.

Use your Dalaran Hearthstone . Take the Dalaran Crater portal (make sure you're prepared against the fall with Goblin Glider Kit or any toy/buff/spell/etc that slows falling or negates damage).

Fly to Growless Cave (Hillsbrad Foothills 44, 39).

Pick up You're a Mean One... or You're a Mean One... from Strange Snowman

You don't need to even tag the Greench just hang around until he's dead then talk to Metzen the Reindeer and grab a Stolen Treats

Use your Hearthstone to return to either Org/ IF or your Shrine then portal to Org/ IF. Turn in You're a Mean One... or You're a Mean One... for a Stolen Present

Use your Garrison Hearthstone Turn in the 4 Winter Veil dailies to
Izzy Hollyfizzle for 5 Merry Supplies which will buy you a Savage Gift from this same NPC.

Rinse and repeat on your alts. Takes under 15 minutes each if you don't have ADHD like me.
