Just use the item you were given-on the Emerald Colossus and it will take away their (elite) status. Now kill em!

Interestingly, if you do damage to the mob, THEN throw the axe at them, you'll get the loot from their elite loot table, meaning 1G per mob!

If you are a Druid, dont use the weapon in flight form. It will make the Emerald Colossus smaller but it will not remove the Elite status and you will get squished very quickly!

I wanted to keep this so I could farm them but you get stuck with quest hubs closing and this one the only one open I could find.

Each mob is worth ~1g and other nice drops.

I tried to keep this and moved on to other quests in the zone but they all dried up making me need to turn it in.

Those colosus give ~1g a pop and good drops I wanted to farm later.

Edit : Killing giants out of quest in their elite form is quite interesting because they give 10k exp each and more than 1g loot. So farm them !

This quest is great to farm high amounts of gold, even after you've gotten your kills mount the Item on your task bar and keep killing them you can get anywhere from 50s to 1g 50s from the loot on these, now at level 85 killing these guys at their elite form is not hard but its faster if you just keep the quest

Fun thing to do when bored(well, as a hunter at least), axe those suckers and feign death. They will shrink and stay shrunk. I shrunk em all, and watched other players fly past them looking for giants, while QQ'n in chat about none being around. Maybe I'm just a jerk... :P

whatever you do.... don't get your quest items mixed up and try to use a charred branch on one of these fellas. I'll tell ya; it don't work.

I used my ghoul to attack, then hurled the axe. Was able to hurl it twice which brings them down fast.

You can't go straight to him and take the quest for the rewards. You have to quest in Deepholm and you'll get a quest that requires you to take a Dwarf to Yevaa and from there the quest chain starts. The quest that leads directly to him is called The Quaking Fields

For rogues, wanting the thrown weapon, if you haven't done any Q's in Deepholm (I hadn't on my 85 Rogue) you just need to do

1. Where's Goldmine
2. Explosive bonding compound (took 9 kills for me) + Something that burns
3. Apply and flash dry
4. Take him to the earthcaller
5. To Stonehearth's aid
6. The Quaking fields
7. The Axe of Elemental Sundering

30 minutes max.

There's some nice gold to be made here.
Never turn in the quest, keep farming the weakened mobs with the item, they drop 1gold+ each :)

even while sundered these mobs seemed to drop elite quality loot

got 3 greens and at least 1g+ off 3/5 mobs

Straightforward quest:
Find an Emerald Colossus;
Hit him with the Axe of Earthly Sundering (which you got from the quest giver);
In a couple of seconds his health drops from 34k to 44639;
In a couple more seconds; he shrinks to about 1/3 his original size;
Start fighting him anytime (obviously it's smart to axe and deplete him first but you don't need to).
Note: if you're a Druid, see the comment by Ragola.
Note: Miners can mine his corpse.
Note: You should have gotten Elemental Ore at the same time from the same quest giver; its objectives are in the same area as the Emerald Colossi.

Yea don't forget to use the quest item on the collosi The Axe of Earthly Sundering, otherwise kill won't count.

Attention HUNTERS: when I went back to complete REP Grind for The Earthen Ring, I rediscovered that until I dismissed my hunter pet, I was unable to get credit for killing the Sundered Emerald Colossus.

What worked best for me (YMMV) was to close to just within the 40-yard range at which the quest axe would work, and then backpedal until the Name changed to SUNDERED Emerald Colossus before firing my next (Arcane) Shot.

Probably similar for other classes with minion(s).

Description

The emerald colossi are the greatest of the Stone Mother's creatures. They must be the first to be removed from the field.

I brought Stonefather Oremantle's axe for just this task. Use it to sunder the giants.

That should bring them down to a more manageable size for you to finish off.
