The chest is at 55,40.

Without coords: Run through the tunnell north of Raynewood Retreat. The path should lead you directly to the chest.

I didn't see any tunnel but ran through trees and down rocks to a 4-tier square tower on the edge of The Howling Vale.

The wooden key dropped from a Withered Ancient near the foot of the tower. The key lets you open the Worn Chest containing the key.

All this at 54,40.

The chest is at 55.0, 40.6. The small rock tunnel that leads there begins at 54.5, 36.6. It is guarded loosely by 2 Crazed Ancients that you can kill to randomly drop the Wooden Key.

Key drops from Crazed Ancients/Withered Ancients. Go down the road until you see a short stone pillar to your left (on the map this area is indicated by a dotted path to the left of the main road). Turn left, keep hanging left down a dirt path in half a circle till you go upward into a cave. Go through the cave, many more crazed ancients/withered ancients on your way, then you'll wind up in a little outdoor area depicted in the screenshots on this page. The box is on a bench to your right. Using the key open the box and inside is your item.

If you have done (part of) this questline pre-cataclysm, you might have the key already.
After killing a lot of Crazed Ancients/Withered Ancients I remembered having some keys in the bank from when the keyring dissapeared, got it out of the bank and opened the chest

See comment by cephadex for a good description of this quest's location. There are Ancients S of the path to the tunnel and I did get the key from them and then had a bit of a problem finding the tunnel because it wasn't near there.

I've killed so many Ancients and yet the key hasn't dropped for me. I have the the right quest, am I doing something wrong?

How to get there: from Raynewood Retreat, head NW along the road toward Felwood.

Look for the large fragments of broken columns on the west side of the road.
/way Ashenvale 54.8, 34.2 Path to Tunnel
The path starts heading SW and then turns S.

Kill treants to obtain KEY at
/way Ashenvale 54.5, 36.8 Tunnel ENTR

Go through the tunnel into a clearing (still fighting/avoiding treants).

Use key to open the chest at
/way Ashenvale 55.0, 40.7 Chest

Find the Wooden Key and use it to obtain the Iron Shaft portion of Dartol's Rod.

Description

I wish your tidings were better.

Raene is correct, I know about Dartol's creation and the treants in the area--at least I did once. They've become corrupted now, their nature twisted.

To find the next piece of the rod, you'll have to find the key to open the chest it's in.

The wooden key is on one of the treants northeast of here near the Felwood border, at the Howling Vale. Once you have it, look for a small glade through the tunnel at the vale. The chest should be hidden around there.
