Thrayir, Eyes of the Siren is located in the Forgotten Vault. He is surrounded by 5 Runestones - Cyclonic, Whirling, Thunderous, Turbulent, and Torrential. To free him, you must bring 5 Runekeys to the corresponding runestones. You must be in an active storm event to get and use the runekeys (i.e. doing a Special Assignment Quest or having completed one for the week)

Whirling Runekey - Dropped from the rare Ksvir the Forgotten, in the southern most room of the Forgotten Vault, during a storm. Appears to be a guaranteed drop.
Torrential Runekey - Requires 7 Torrential Fragments to create. Appears to drop from any mob on the island during a storm (elites, rares, and normal mobs)
Thunderous Runekey - Requires 5 Thunderous Fragments to create, drops from treasure chests inside of the storm and underwater chests outside of the storm. I recommend unlocking and farming Seafarer's Caches to get them (requires Dipping a Toe).
Cyclonic Runekey - Appears to drop from Zek'ul the Shipbreaker in the Deadfin Mire during the storm (EDIT: it appears this key can also be fished up from the waters near where the rare spawns)
Turbulent Runekey - Requires 3 Turbulent Fragments that are scattered around the island to create (can only be found in the storm):

The garden of the abandoned inn on the center-west side of the map, looks like a pile of dirt
The Rotting Hole cave on the southeast side of the map, looks like a small yellow crystal
In the Spirit-Scarred Cave, held in the hands of the ghost. Looks like a small yellow crystal

Torrential Runekey -
Requires 7x Drops Torrential Fragment that seems to drop from ANY mob in a storm.
Best spot is the skeletons on the shore just outside the forgotten vault cave, as they hyperspawn. Got mine in about 5 minutes of solofarming.

Thunderous Runekey
For this runekey you’ll need to assemble five Thunderous Fragment. The fragments drop from treasures and chests both inside and outside of the storm. So there is two ways to go about it. First is the big chests that are spread around the zone, sometimes your character will emit a wind, that guides you to these chests and you’ll make em appear with an extra action button. These chests can be found both inside and outside the storm. The other way is by farming seafarer’s caches. To unlock seafarer’s caches, you have to had completed the quest Dipping a Toe, given by Apprentice Tanmar, after completing a few of the introductory quests at the island, so if you’ve done most quests you should’ve completed it already. Anyway, completing it will give you Blessing of the Seadweller, allowing you to walk on the seafloor and find treasure. In general just exploring underwater. And this is where you find the seafarer’s caches, so circle the island underwater to search for caches. Theres quite a lot more seafarer’s caches than normal treasures, so this i what i recommend if you want to farm it as fast as you can. But you can definitely also just pick up treasures that you come across as you do other content in the zone. The caches only appear outside of the storm. And the dropchance for the fragments seem to be around 5% from Seafarers caches and 20% from regular treasure, but ofc RNG be RNG, and this is just my assumption from what i experienced.
When you have all 5 Thunderous Fragment, click them to combine into the Thunderous Runekey

Cyclonic Runekey - Drops from Zek'ul the Shipbreaker located in the storm

Turbulent Runekey
For this runekey you'll need to assemble 3 Turbulent Fragment
They are all found in the storm version of the isle.

First fragment is gathered from a dirtpile, next to a kul tiran Ghost

Third Fragment is found in the hands of a ghost in another cave

Combine all fragments to get the final runekey Turbulent Runekey

When all runekeys are gathered, go to Thrayir and activate all the runestones.

Nov 8: In 11.0.7 PTR build 57409, the Thunderous Fragment only dropped once from a treasure chest with a spiked icon in the minimap at /way 68.42 94.41
I farmed underwater treasure chests for 40 minutes. No more dropped. I'm not sure if it is a bug, or if the plan is to loot 1 Thunderous Fragment per day from that specific spiked Treasure Chest. I'll continue to test this. I also looted a few treasure chests on the isle ground. No luck.

There is currently a bug in the PTR. When you collect the Turbulent Fragment x 3 and combine them, the game is turning them into Thunderous Runekey. This is a mistake. It should convert it into a Turbulent Runekey. I reported this bug.

Nov 9: Cycled around the Siren Isle 30 minutes. None of the treasure chests underwater dropped any Thunderous Fragment. The spiked treasure chest didn't spawn. This was the source of the only Thunderous Fragment I looted on Nov 8. If the spiked treasure chest doesn't spawn today.

Nov 10: No spiked treasure chest.

Nov 11: The Pirates phase spawned. New spiked Treasure Chest spawned by the beach to the south. Requires a Bilge Rat Supply Key. It is now established that the spiked Treasure Chest spawns every 3 days when the World Quests and daily quests refresh.

PICKAXES

A few days ago, I remember the pickaxes scattered around Ghoststone Diggings were interactive. I was too busy to click them and forgot. Now I have checked 2-3 days in a row, and the pickaxes are not interactive. I'm now wondering what they are for, and when exactly or under what conditions they become interactive.

Some quick notes for getting Thunderous Fragment that I used. Excuse the rough and ready nature of the pins as it's day one. I used these pins and had pretty good speed getting this done as well as the thunderous runekey fragments. From what I saw these points work in and out of the storm phase. Highly recommend buying Experimental Go-Pack (Go-Pack)

Regarding farming the Thunderous Fragments you can knock these out simultaneously farming Zek'kul for the Cyclonic Runekey.

Just behind Zek there's frequently a chest that spawns and I was able to get my 5 thunderous during my Zek farm. Happy hunting friends!

My personal recomendation to get all the runekeys. All of these is DURING A STORM:

1. Check if Ksvir the Forgotten is up, in Forgotten Vaults, during a storm. Guaranteed drop of Whirling Runekey.

2. Farm Cyclonic Runekey by killing Zek'ul the Shipbreaker multiple times. Best way is to wait in his spawn and look for custom groups for this NPC. Most are named ''Zek'', so you can search that to find a group. After you kill it, leave group, and repeat. Drop rate is pretty low, so expect to kill him many times. He can also drop Torrential Fragment, which you'll need 7 of them to get the next runekey, Torrential Runekey.

3. Once you have Cyclonic Runekey from Zek'ul the Shipbreaker, you may have a few Torrential Fragment. The best way to do this is to find a group that farms this, just outside Forgotten Vaults. There are many groups right now. Drop is REALLY low, so you must have patience. Once you have all 7 fragments, the roughest part is over.

4. Turbulent Runekey is really easy to obtain, you just need to get the three Turbulent Fragment, which are in specific points of the map.

5. Last runekey, Thunderous Runekey, requires 5 Thunderous Fragment, which can be found in chests all around the Siren Isle. Easiest way is to use Paste and TomTom addons to track many of the possible chest spawns and have a route around them. When you're done with the route, start again. You'll see wind around you when a chest is nearby, and when you're close to it, and extra button will appear. Press it and then you can loot the chest. I think drop is around 10%, maybe even more. There is a chest inside Forgotten Vaults that is not like the others, and I think it has a guaranteed drop of this fragment, but I'm not 100% sure of this, this is just an assumption.

I just completed everything for this mount tonight. I figured this grind would take quite a bit more time, but I'm thankful to be done with it lol. I did 3/5 parts of it last night (the cyclonic key took the longest). The Cyclonic Runekey was rough because I didn't know about the fishing option until today, but the torrential fragments definitely took a while to get. Everything must be obtained in the storm phase, though.

Such a beautiful mount. I've wanted it for over a decade and I'm so happy to finally have it! :)

This mount has some weird visual bug when going to walking/flying animation from idle pose. I put here the video and it might be not that clear on it, but when you start walking or flying, mount animation glitches and shows a different weird pose for a single frame. It is not game breaking but it sucks to have this glitchy animation on a mount that has been in the game for 10 years. Makes your eyes bleed and better to avoid using this until they ever decides to fix it.

So many people are already running around with the mount—it’s insane! I’ve been farming for hours now, and while I’ve got the Cyclonic and Whirling, I only have a single Torrential and Thunderous. The drop chance for the Torrential seems especially bad.
I can’t help but wonder if the drop rates were higher at the start or something; otherwise, I can’t explain it.

For anyone who has a completed runekey and needs space in your bags, you can click the stone for the corresponding runekey then return later once you have any of the others.

Ie. you do not need to use all 5 runekeys at once since your progress saves.

The hardest part for me seemed to be getting all 7 thunderous fragments. Saw a video with a simple and time saving solution. Join a group and just type in Zek, normally several pop up. Join these groups and keep killing Zek. Took me about an hour to get the remaining 5 fragments I needed. I was getting about 1 fragment for every 10 Zek kills. When I tried to get the fragments solo I only got 2 in 3 days of opening chests and killing mobs. Good luck everyone and enjoy your new mount.

When you get all five runekeys, make sure you are still in The Storm on Siren's Isle. When you go into the Forgotten Vault, you need the chamber to the left. You'll fight your way through and then you'll be able to put in all Runekeys into the Runes to get the mount. I went out of the Storm and realized I had to be in The Storm, so had to go back again. Lots of time wasted.

Step by step how to get the mount:
Ways to get to Siren Isle: Use the Zepplin in Dornogal (coordinates 72, 5) or the Mole Machine in the Ringing Deeps at coordinates 46, 30.
Speak to Suzie Boltwrench at coordinates 69, 49 on Isle of Siren to go into the storm phase.

You need a total of 5 runekeys:
1. Whirling Runekey: Go into the cave at coordinates 44, 24 on Isle of Siren, enter the tunnel and click on the Singing Tablet to enter the Forgotten Vault. Run down the corridor to the last room, defeat Ksvir the Forgotten to loot the Whirling Runekey.
2. Torrential Runekey: This runekey is made by combining 7 Torrential Fragment. These have a low chance to drop from any rares, elites and normal mobs found on Isle of Siren. Best place to farm is near the entrance of the cave mentioned above at 44, 24 as the spawn rate is quite fast. It takes 2-3 hours to get all 7 when farming in a group.
3. Thunderous Runekey: This runekey is made by combining 5 Thunderous Fragment which drop from treasure chests in the Isle of Siren. The easiest to find are Seafarer's Caches, you will notice gusts of wind blowing from your character to the direction of the cache. Make sure you completed the quest Dipping a Toe in order to see the caches.
4. Cyclonic Runekey: This drops from either Zek'ul the Shipbreaker found at coordinates 33, 73, or by fishing in the waters close to were Zek'ul spawns.
5. Turbulent Runekey: This runekey is made up of 3 turbulent fragments that are scattered around Isle of Siren.
- First fragment is at coordinates 38, 51 in a dirtpile next to a Kul Tiran Ghost
- Second fragment is at coordinates 67, 78 inside a cave infront of a ghost on the ground.
- Third fragment is another cave at coordinates 52, 38 in the hands of a ghost.

When you have all the runekeys, head back to the Forgotten Vault (entrance at coordinates 44, 24) head to the room at coordinates 72, 61, go up the staircase where you will see Thrayir on the ground surrounded by 5 inactive runestones. Activate each one, Thrayir will then give you a quest that gives you the mount.

2 hours of farming Torrential Runes in the Sacred Hollow area of Siren Isle and not a single drop. I have the other 4 rune keys. This low drop chance is almost not worth it.

In general, this is a awesome mount, but the lack of proper animations killing it for me. Skyriding just feels awful with it and it lacks ground animations entirely, making it feel slow asf even on ground.

If you're farming skeletons for the Torrential runes, get the Crawler mines from the base camp. One or two people using these effectively can keep the northern coastline cleared which can enable a single 5-man group to trigger hyperspawning, greatly speeding up acquisition.

For Cyclonic Runekey, since you can fish or get it from Zek'ul the Shipbreaker, I noticed not far from where he spawns is a broken ship, sticking out of the water, the end of which is just a long piece of wood sticking upward, I stood on the end of that and fished and I had the Cyclonic Runekey in 9 casts. Coincidence? Perhaps but I noticed as I stood there my fishing skill went up a little faster then normal so I stayed for around 45 minutes and also fished up a weird rock that changes your pose when you click on it.

As of Dec 28, 2024, It took me about 2~3 hours to get ONE Torrential fragment. So overall took me almost 20+ hours of farming to get this mount. I was even able to max out my valor stones by killing endless rares... The first four Runekeys were relatively easy; got them in about 2 hours.

IMO, doesn't seem to be related to how many mobs you kill per hour as mentioned by other posters; YMMV. This is just a guess, more like some internal CD that limits the number you can get per limited time. Blizz seriously nerfed the drop rate for these Torrential fragments. Way to go blizz in pissing off your subs...

This mount is pretty neat, but it seems kind of clunky and buggy. And the mount doesn't sit at all. Just stationary-constant flapping. So that's kind of a bummer. I feel like they could have some more work into the model and it really would have been a really nice mount.

The longest parts of this quest are the Cyclonic Runekey and the Torrential Runekey.

For the Cyclonic Runekey, it took me about 80 fishing casts. It may feel like you are in the wrong spot or that you won't pull this, but just keep casting and you will get it.

For the Torrential Runekey, it took me 3.5 hours of grinding in a group, split over 3 nights. I would not recommend doing this solo. Grab a group in the LFG finder and just pummel those skeletons.
I truly thought I was losing my mind... I do not understand the requirement of having players do something like this, as it just keeps people from doing fun activities they want to be doing. I understand it separates players who "really" want the mount, but considering the other 4 runekeys took about 45 min total, it felt like it was designed to just keep people on the Isle. Anyway, good luck, the mount is cool!

Best advice for folks that don't have a lot of time to spare grinding out the Torrential Fragments for the longest key of this collection is to farm for one fragment daily and leave it at that. I grinded for four hours straight after my first fragment dropped and didn't see another fragment, but every day I got one fragment within the first hour by farming the rares (droprates vary but my biggest successes came from Tempest Talon, Zek "Kek" and Slaughtershell. Pop a rare when you see it). So to retain sanity, I'd again advise to simply treat this like a daily and get one per day until you have all seven fragments to make the keystone.

I did this start to finish in 2.5 hours, hardest grind were the thunderous fragments. I found that entering warmode and then the storm yeilded far more chest probably due to less people farming.

Zek dropped the rune on the second kill, apparently it can be fished up in the area behind Zek's spawn point and torrentials took 30 mins with a 5 man grp.

I guess i got lucky.

I farm chests inside and outside of the storm, I kill all rares, and I have since Siren Isle opened. I can now fly on the isle, but not a single item for this mount has dropped for me.

This may just be me, but I've noticed that Thrayir's model tends to freak out a bit during dragon riding, especially when surging forward. If this isn't just a gpu issue on my end I hope Blizzard fixes it.

The mount's animations are completely screwed up so during any movement at all it sort of constantly "snaps" back to its idle animation for a frame. It's nauseating to look at and makes the mount pretty much unusable (at least for me). I genuinely think it could be an issue for people with sensitivity to flashing lights etc. Not to mention the lightning effects on it are extremely low res (presumably very small textures that were scaled up) and become blindingly large when Skyriding. Just a fair warning for anyone who is grinding this mount with the intention of using it.

Doesn't seem to be much conversation around it because presumably the vast majority of people gave up on the absurd Torrential Fragment grind, and the few people who did get it just didn't bother using it. If they weren't going to patch the horrid Fragment grind, I don't see there being any chance that the animations ever get looked at/fixed. This mount was advertised as a major patch feature btw.

If you also want the Earthen transmog ensembles (Ensemble: Stonebound Earthen Regalia and Ensemble: Awakened Earthen Regalia), remember to do the Thrayir grind on your Dwarf / Dark Iron Dwarf / Earthen with the quest accepted (An Armored Charge, then An Ordered Design).

By the time I completed the 2nd transmog quest I had already 5 Torrential Fragment in my bags, i.e. a good part of the Thrayir grind was done without extra effort.

After killing Zek for weeks and NO key, I went to go fishing with the comments here.

I fished mine as well right by the cyclone behind Zak's spawn point. Khaz fishing level 10, got it in 5 casts.

Farming Thunderous Fragment for Thunderous Runekey ended up being a lot easier than I initially thought. Here's how I farmed them earlier today:

1. Enter Storm in Siren isle by talking to Suzie Boltwrench and getting Seafury Tempest buff from her. (She will not let you enter the storm, if you haven't done the weekly progress bar cache.)
2. Grab the TR-06 Pummeler vehicle from behind her. Note that you can see chests, but you don't have the gusts of winds pointing towards nearby chests as long as you are riding the mechsuit.
3. Press the macros below and start going through the Runed Storm Cache locations.
4. When you find the first Runed Storm Cache, kill all the mobs following you with the TR-06 Pummeler, leave vehicle, reveal the chest with the extra action button and loot the chest.
5. Go through the other Runed Storm Cache locations on foot. (Or grab another TR-06 Pummeler, if you're close by.)
6. After you finish going through all the locations, right click the Seafury Tempest buff. This will teleport you away from the storm and back to the camp.
7. Teleport to Dornogal, switch War-Mode On, (or Off, if it was On), return to the Siren Isle and repeat from Step 1.

I fished at the shipwreck near Zek'ul the Shipbreaker and got the Cyclonic Runekey in 26 casts with 339 fishing skill. Zek'ul respawned twice during those 26 casts. /way #2369 38.61, 83.53

I just got this mount today (06 April 2025, Patch 11.1.0.60037, Season 2 of TWW) and it took me about 5 hours in total time played across two days to get all the runekeys. Let me start by clarifying that I found some of the available guides (Wowhead, Youtube, etc.) to be somewhat outdated as they were written/made during an older patch or even the PTR, so take them with a grain of salt because Blizzard has made slight adjustments to the farming process since then. The same obviously goes for this one, if you're after this mount at a later date.

So with that out of the way, to get this mount you will need to collect five different runekeys which can all be found on the Siren Isle. Once you have them all, you need to go into The Forgotten Vault and activate all the runes around Thrayir (the dead bird on the floor), which will then spawn the NPC who offers you the mount via a very quick and simple talking quest.

1. In my opinion, as of Patch 11.1.0.60037 during Season 2 of The War Within, the easiest runekey to get is by far the Whirling Runekey from Ksvir the Forgotten, which has a drop chance of around 63% according to Wowhead but I got mine first try, so I'd say that it's probably even higher than that. This is a simple "go kill Ksvir and you get your first runekey" situation.

2. Secondly, I recommend going after the Cyclonic Runekey, which sadly has a very low chance to drop from Zek'ul the Shipbreaker (0.9%), but! it can also be fished up from the waters near Zek'ul the Shipbreaker. You don't have to have any fishing skill to do this, I personally freshly picked up the fishing profession on my alt and it took me around 30 casts before I got it. Zek'ul respawns roughly every 6-10 minutes by the way, if you do want to go for that option rather than fishing.

3. After you've obtained the first two, I recommend going for the Turbulent Runekey next. You get this one by gathering three Turbulent Fragments and combining them into the runekey with a simple click. The Turbulent Fragments can be looted from each of these locations during the storm phase:

/way 52.39, 38.59 Spirit-Scarred Cave (in the hands of the ghost)

4. The penultimate runekey to go after is the Thunderous Runekey. This one takes some time to get, but it's not as bad as it seems. Overall, this step took me about 30-45 minutes. To get it, you will need to obtain five Thunderous Fragments and combine them into one, similar to step three. Now, most guides will tell you that there are multiple chests around the Siren Isle that contain these fragments, but I personally only found them in the Runed Storm Caches during the storm phase. You will be guided to these caches by a gust of wind appearing near your character, they are not! marked on the map like you might expect. Once you're near one, an extra action button will appear, you press it and it unlocks the cache for you to loot, which then may or may not have a fragment in it. It personally took me exactly 20 caches to get all five fragments, which makes the drop rate about 5%, not Wowhead's claimed 31%.

5. Lastly, the Torrential Runekey. This one cost me 3 precious hours of my time. To get it you will have to combine 7 Torrential Fragments (just like in step three and five), which you get by killing any mob during the storm phase on any part of the isle, and you may or may not get a fragment. Rare and elite spawns do have a higher drop rate than normal mobs but it's entirely up to you. One recommendation I might make is that the Brinebound Wraiths and Kvaldir Tidewalkers outside of The Forgotten Vault have a very high respawn rate, so this is probably the ideal farming spot. I couldn't tell you how many mobs I killed but, like I said, this took me 3 hours to farm. So do with that what you will, and good luck!

Once you have completed all five steps and you've got your five runekeys, simply enter The Forgotten Vault, go to where Thrayir lies on the ground, activate all the runes around him, and the NPC should appear before you with a quest that gives you the mount. if you don't have all the keys, but somehow activated the keys you have, and realised you effed up, just leave the room, farm the missing keys. i'm not sure about how much time it saves the keys activated, but after 3 hours it was all ok. i forgot the turbulent one, farmed it, activated it. then got the mount.

I got it.

It took me about 5 or 6 hours to get everything complete and I want to give several points.

-1st: Don't waste time defeating Zek'ul the Shipbreaker to get the Cyclonic Runekey, fish right next to where it appears and you'll get it much faster.

-2nd: I got stuck farming the Torrential Fragment. I was reading around here and tried the method mentioned here of riding the TR-06 Pummeler and heading to location /way 62 74.
When you arrive, you'll see that the cave is closed, but on the right side, there's a hole you can enter. To do so, you'll have to use skill 3 to go down quickly, as the game sends you back outside. Once inside, grind everything until you get the 7 fragments.

I arrived with one fragment obtained in about 3 or 4 hours, and I don't know if it's a matter of luck, but at this spot, I got the remaining 6 fragments in 2 hours.

Pummeler method still working - got 3 frags in the first 15 minute session today.

edit: and for reference my subsequent sessions netted: one, zero, one, zero, and then the final session got a drop in the first 20 seconds or so. I already had one fragment going into this farm, so that was my final drop needed.

As of 19th January 2026:

whirling runekey - got it on first try, rare should be up most of the time, very fast.
cyclonic runekey - fish around the zek'tul area, if you need specific place I fished it on the tail end of the big skeleton, however I saw people fishing for it on the other end too. took me about 70 tries. Bother with the elite only if you need Torrential Fragments imo.
turbulent runekey - working as described elsewhere
thunderous runekey - there might be a sort of a "cap here" - after getting 3, I seem to get "capped" and opening 20+ chests yielded no. Just sell all the thunderous fragments to a vendor (I used mammoth) and its back to normal - I got a fragment in the next chest after getting stuck for a bit.
torrential runekey - here is where the real trickery begins. I recommend leaving it last, as any mob kill up until 7 can get you a fragment. When you want to farm it, use the pummeler method. Go to the cave other people suggested, but don't drop in the hole, instead, drop down on the grate, you should fall through the grate, or use the gap behind the dead tree on the right side. After you are inside use range to kill a few mobs at the entrance (to avoid losing a lot of HP and possible slow), then hug the right side of the wall. There should be a sharp triangular edge that you need to jump over. It takes a few tries. Once you are inside, you can freely move around the cave, but avoid the entrance area - there's an invisible wall that will teleport you out.

I wish that was all to it, but no.
The mobs have varying respawn rate that changes around every 5 minutes of shredder fuel (with spamming 1 constantly so may be less of real time minutes). At the first stage, the two groups of slimes at the cave entrance spawn nearly after dying. You want to aim so that you never run out of the green slow pools from the slimes, that indicates that they are spawning quick. If you notice they spawn slower, kill all mobs in the cave and the others should respawn. If the spawn rate starts to be really slow (running out of green pools), you can change phase (party sync, war mode, ...) and it will get back to fastest.

The last trick is same as thunderous fragments. I got "capped" at 3 fragments (there was a pattern of one fragment dropping every shredder reset up until that), with not getting a drop in 30+ minutes. However, as soon as I sold the fragments, I got the next one in like a minute of farming. After getting a drop, there might be a window of 10-20 minutes of no drop so be prepared to farm a bit. I also highly suggest taking breaks in between fragment drops, as the 5th, 6th and especially 7th fragments took several times more time than the previous ones. I even waited for the next day for the 7th, and - at this point unsurprisingly - got it within a minute of farming. There is a strong pattern of "farming protection" likely working here; making a constant farming time-consuming.

TL;DR: torrential fragment still works via golem method, hug right side of cave to avoid porting. Sell fragments after drop (make sure to turn off auto vendor addons to not override buyback), take breaks, ideally spread this over several days rather than farm for hours.
