This could be related to Hallow's End. A lot of new stuff has been added for that event since Cataclysm was released.

Edit: The comment below has turned out to be correct. It is indeed the reward at the end of a small questline in Stormwind/Orgrimmar. In the last quest, you're asked to take it to one of two persons. No matter which one you choose, you'll get the pet.

The thing in the crate occasionally pops his head up to look around.

This item is from the quest line, starting in "A freind in need" at the Hallow's end event. It bounces around you as you walk, if you stand still it will start "Break-dancing" by hoping and spining wildly, if you stand still near a critter it will suck it inside and preduce green smoke for a short time. it will also randomly open up and usely a pair of eye will look out at you from the inside of it. A very cool pet that is definetly worth the time it takes to get. :)

He will also eat non-attackable critters, such as the "Dalaran Sewer Turtle" in Dalaran's sewers. He does appear to require line of sight to eat a target, so no luck on the giant sewer rat there.

Just visited the little pet shop in Dalaran with this... thing. It found a cat with almost instant respawn (Fuzz) on the right side as you enter, next to the aquarium with the fish in it. Poor cat gets eaten the very second it spawns, every time.
I was hoping for it to eat the swimming gnome too but no such luck, the darn gnome was lvl75 and covered in plate :(

He doesn't just eat critters. I've only been able to try it on vermin like rats and maggots, but every once in a while, instead of eating it, he'll send out a ray of dark energy and disintegrate it into a little puff of darkness.

I got a question for anyone who has both the crate and the Toxic Wastling (since I don't have the later myself or know anyone who does):

The crate's reach seems pretty far to me (as in a few yards instead of touching distance) when it comes to snatching critters. Does the same count for the Toxic Wastling? Or does the crate have the unique benefit of longer reach?

This thing doesnt just eat the usual rats and snakes! It eats deer and COWS! I turned my back on it for a moment in Allerian Stronghold, and it ate TWO 105hp Horses that were standing nearby!

Best part about it is all the critters it gobbles end up on your guild's critter kill score!

I got a great kick out of this. I was farming up some meat in Azshara for cooking and all of a sudden I noticed my Creepy Crate ATE a Azshara Sapling ! I nearly died laughing.

These will "eat" any critter in range including everything from a rat, to a sheep, and even a cow! Even Wodin's Warrior Kitten Zena isn't safe around this guy as he will snap her up as soon as she spawns. Take him out to the Crazy Cat Lady's house and watch him clear the place of those pesky cats... and cows... and sheep ...

One of the best places to farm for Critter Kill Squad is in the Ironforge side of the Deeprun Tram. Take out your Creepy Crate and it will eat the the Deeprun Rats. They have about a 1-3 second respawn rate and if you have some down time run WoW in the background and make sure you dont afk out.

IMO I believe that Creepy Crate is a tribute to Creepshow by Stephen King. In 1982 most of you did not exist but this is a great horror classic.

Sadly, not every critter the Crate kills counts towards Critter Kill Squad, at least not at the moment. (I hope this gets fixed.)

I have noticed a pattern:

Whenever the Crate uses Crate Grip to pull the critter to it, it counts.
Whenever it just zaps the critter from afar, it doesn't.

As I said somewhere else too the best place to get your Creepy Crate for feeding is Terroweb Tunnel in Eastern Plaguelands. Whoever ever went in that tunnel knows that it's FULL of criters: Thousand spiders, scorpions and bugs, they are everywhere. It will clean the place in no time! :P

sad news. as of today 5.1 - the crate still eats everything under the sun :-p but it no longer counts towards Critter Kill Squad. Very annoying and a stealth nerf, also confirmed that lil k.t. no longer counts towards the achievement when he freezes critters.

I have a habit of fishing where lots of critters spawn with my crate out.. and before the patch it counted, afterwards It does not - and i watched the counter very carefully once i realized. no big deal but it was useful.

I think it's a squirrel dk so I named mine squirrel soth. For those who might not know, this game does have a lot of things based off of dungeons and dragons. In dungeons and dragons death knights were made up by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman for their world Dragonlance in the DnD series. The most famous of them being Lord Soth.

I have to actually try to kill them on purpose now. At least it won't be eating my quest critters now. That part was kind of annoying.

This Battle Pet has removed all non-seasonal vermin from my Garrison. In addition, I've been able to reduce Garrison overhead by assigning the Frostwall Axe Thrower to a position at the Bladespire Citadel as a Frostwolf Axethrower, although I do miss the cry of "Varmit!" and subsequent "Thunk!" of an axe hitting a critter.

At first, I wondered why my Creepy Crate (whom I've named Magus in honor of who is in the crate: Magus Medivh) does not seem to want to eat all the Spectral Spinner, Ghost Maggot, and Ghastly Rat infesting the Garrison during the current </>Hallow's End</> world event. After some thought, I decided that he's doesn't eat seasonal food.

If you're looking to silence your Creepy Crate's fidgeting sounds,
just create nine blank or silent OGG files.
Name these files...

This addon should be enabled by default unless you're creating this beyond patch 8.3.x. In which case you will need to update the Interface# in the TOC file, from 80300 to whatever the current number may be.

Find this number by running WoW, and at the login screen you'll see the Version number at the bottom left corner. Then convert it to the interface number.
For example, game version 8.0.0 was interface# 80000, 8.1.0 (a major patch) was 80100, 8.1.2 (a minor patch to 8.1) was 80102, and so on.
The version# in the TOC is just a note in game, you can update that as well if you like.

You can also create your own LUA files to mute other game sounds. for example...
Make another LUA file, but this time you might name it WorgenSniffing.LUA with the following code inside. Then place it in the MuteSounds folder along with your other LUA file.

You may be wondering how to find the number associated with each sound in the game. Well you can find the FD ID# for each sound at the "WoW.Tools" website. Select "Files" at the top to browse, search and even listen to every sound in the game. This way you can find those sounds that annoy you, and make your own LUA to add to the list.

You can also just make one LUA file with a giant list of annoying sounds. However I found it easier to later undo specific sounds I muted by making a LUA for each category or subject I intended to mute. Then just remove that LUA's file name from the list in the TOC, preventing it from being loaded. It's entirely up to you.

If you go to the hill above Stormwind at 50.4, 14.6 it will eat the Docile Sheep. Its range is quite impressive.

When the Creepy Crate eats critters it will trigger the speed boost from Bear Tartare and the newer Fried Bonefish and will not take your character out of Stealth or Prowl.
