Although not found by themselves in Ashenvale, they can appear to assist other creatures. I just caught one that came to assist a maggot I was fighting.

In my hunting for a Rare Beetle I found the following:

In Ashenvale they comes up a lot as backup for other level 5 creatures, I have not seen them as the primary in this zone.

Getting an uncommon or rare Beetle, as with all Battle Pets, isn't all a matter of luck. You can mouse over the Beetle you're fighting and compare it to ones that have already been caught:

Beetle, Level 8 (Uncommon)
503 HP, 72 Power, 77 Speed

Beetle, Level 8 (Uncommon)
459 HP, 81 Power, 77 Speed

If you're after a rare (blue) Beetle I suggest you go straight to Felwood for a lvl14 one. I just got 4x rare beetles in a row in battles.

Despite its very generic name, the beetle's base stats are different from all other pets with the roach/beetle moveset. Compared to most of the other "beetles" (e.g., Creepy Crawly, Sand Scarab), they have more health, but don't hit as hard. Compared to most of the "roaches" (e.g., Resilient Roach, Undercity Cockroach), they hit harder, but aren't as fast. ...just found a rare.

I was actually in Ashenvale and must have crossed over into Felwood by mistake while running around trying to find battle pets for my new recruits when I spotted a squirrel ready to go toe to toe...

I was quite surprised when he turned out to be level 14 rather than level 7 (that's when I noticed I was now in Felwood). So out came my Panda - beat the living sh*t out of him and then up next BAM! A rare beetle!

Smacked him around a little and caught him.
Pretty cool to find a rare randomly like that (and totally lucky).
