lvl 9 cockroach with 919ish health = uncommon
lvl 9 cockroach with 623-685ish health = poor (don't bother)

Although they use the same model, cockroaches and Roach are two separate creatures. Both are capturable as battle pets, though, so if you are a collector, be sure to keep that in mind and grab one of each.

You have to check the life for the level it is to determine if it's a rare or not.

If you use aoe to clear the mobs around them to give you a clear battle space, be careful! Because the aoe will kill the little guy :(

I found 3 Cockroaches in Icecrown to battle. Of those 3, 2 of them were rare, and with both of those rares came 1 uncommon battle buddy. Now I know this is a small focus group, but what are the odds? I'd say Icecrown is the place to find a rare cockroach.

Silithid Hatchling is a normal beast with a beetle skillset. It will die from Apocalypse.

Could not for the life of me find any rare cockroaches.. Until I was looking for the Scourged Whelpling in Icecrown. The whelps most often has two cockroaches with them, and I encountered several blue ones in the hunt of my whelpling.

I'd say don't waste time trying to actually look for the cockroach itself, as you'll spend plenty of time hunting down a rare Scourged Whelpling anyway.

Also worth mentioning that these are level 23, so you'll get to skip a good bit of leveling on your roach as well.

These are convenient enemy to boost your battle pets on. If you go to Ymirheim in Icecrown, you'll ONLY have cockroaches as opponents - no other pets will even join as secondaries. Cockroaches have no dots, roots or anything else that could complicate life (/undeath/mechanical existence) for your boosted pet. As a critter with only critter attacks they are easy to hard counter using a humanoid with beast attacks, such as Curious Wolvar Pup or Lil' Bad Wolf - these will kill a cockroach from Ymirheim on average in two rounds, unless he delays it by one round with Survival.

It might seem they can cause you trouble with Apocalypse, but in practice the battle is over in less than 15 rounds, and with multiple cockroaches they tend to overwrite each other's Apocalypse resetting it to 15 rounds remaining.

They're around level 23, so are only efficient to boost to around that, but you can get the last level(s) using battle-training stones anyway.
