Dragonflight Tier Set Bonuses Disabled for Level 80s on Wednesday August 28th

Posted 2024/08/26 at 10:34 PM by Squishei

On Wednesday, August 28, we’re going to deploy a hotfix that we want to precede with some advance notice.

Along with all of the new Hero Talents and updates to classes and specializations in The War Within, the power values of some Dragonflight tier set bonuses have remained relevant in level 80 end-game content. We don’t want anyone to feel obligated to go do the previous expansion’s content for upgrades. We do want players to graduate out of their Dragonflight gear with the new content.

On Wednesday, we will disable all Dragonflight tier set bonuses when your character reaches level 80. They will still aid you throughout leveling, but will cease to function when your character hits level 80.

Thank you!

Aww, I was enjoying having double up-time on Apocalypse Now :(

Comment by gruloch

Probably for the best. Made sense to have it in EA when there were pretty much no upgrades available over tier gear but now we’re in launch may as well force the switch over.

Make sense but only if they did a good design on hero talents…

They did the same in shadowlands it is what it is

What's the point in a new xpac and new gear if you're just going to trivialize it all with stuff from the previous expac? This was both inevitable and expected either way

Have you ever played a wow expac release before

I have, and they're always too slow to make sure the previous tier sets aren't OP

lol, it was a combination of the higher ilvl from awakened raids combined with how good many of the selected season 4 bonuses were that is making old tier still good. We ended s4 with 529-ish ilvl. We don't see any tangible ilvl upgrades until the 76 or 77 range. It wasn't just one or the other.

now that DF raids aren't awakened, the best ilvl you could pull for anything is 489 from mythic amirdrassil. there's no feasible reason to have to go back in the first place if you didn't already have the bonuses.

I love having my tier on my rider frost dk but I despise it on my aldrachi havoc dh

Comment by xLunacyx

Aww, my enhancement tier set is OP I'm gonna lose a lot of dps by not using my 528's, at least until the raid tier comes out.

Comment by Chaxton

Didn't tier sets get disabled halfway to the new max level in the past? Or earlier? I can't recall a time where the tier sets remained viable to the max level of a following expansion.

Comment by cr3at1vex

well, then fix frostmage, if my 2set from df will be nerfed, i want to be able to do more dps in 565 ilvl than a restodruid in catform in 550 ilvl

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. They do this with every expansion now to get people to use newer gear , unlike in the past where people were using tier gear 2-3 raid cycles in because the set bonuses were too good. Same thing with the Legion artifacts , had to disable them because people would have kept using them instead of replacing for newer gear.

Comment by Trumpcat

Understandable, but is it a "graduation" if they just make the old gear bad?

No, but they aren't making the old gear bad. So nothing to worry about.

Farewell holy priest 4-set, you were goated. Pvp and raiding will never be the same

Not tier sets if I remember correctly, it was Legion Legendries because most of those provided extra abilities, some of those Blizz later turned into talents. Those Legos then became too OP because of extra/double abilities, not just usual tier set bonus procs, buffing certain spells or overall increased damage.

They did something similar with BfA gear that had Azerite Powers, or maybe it was disabled by the nature of those also required you to have Azerite Neck and it wasn't good enough to have those secondary stats-less Azerite Armor along with powerless Neck.

Pretty tragic how gimped the S1 tier sets are by comparison. Like 2-3% gains for my class's specs in AoE and ST, so this first season is looking bleak with only one viable spec/HT combo.

Comment by mrgummage

Kinda surprised this wasn't a thing already anyway.

Makes sense that Legacy set bonuses are disabled once you outlevel them.

Also surprised they didn't nerf/disable the overpowered trinkets and legendary effects from stuff like Augury of the Primal Flame and Fyr'alath the Dreamrender at level 80.
