The new crafting system put a hard stop on me even wanting to touch DF professions. It was a neat concept, but very punishing in so many ways. The knowledge point farming was the worst part for me. I still haven't maxed out a single profession in that area and this late in the xpac, we still don't have a catch-up system. The biggest joke of all is the people placing public work orders. Countless players contributing zero mats and giving garbage tips that don't even come close covering the cost of the mats. I just want to slap them all upside the head.
Absolutely, 100%, hated the DF crafting system. I couldn't make enough gold to keep up with the costs of mythic raiding and m+ and it ultimately lead to me leaving the game in S3. I was an alchemist. That should explain why. Not all professions were created equal. If you didn't pick the right one at launch, you were sol.
Blacksmithing didn't really make me any gold, but it saved me tons on my Plate repair bills. Worth it.
Professions are hit and miss. The goodI like the tabs and the skill tree. I like the powers that you get like overloading an herb/node. I like that you can place work orders and request that something be made that might usually not be.The bad:Most people (myself included) would like to use them but are just stuck. We can't make anything that gives us points, there are no work orders worth filling, and have no chance other the Dark Moon Faire to progress. Everything is just so overwhelming and there is no end in sight. There are a few things which are jut obvious steps backwards for some reason...things which Blizzard fixed and then broke again. * Bringing back needing to spam Trade Chat. I refuse to play like it is 2009.* Bringing back the need to be a partiuclar place for professions. They got rid of needing to be at a moonwell in order to make mooncloth for a reason. It makes sense thematically, but it isn't fun gameplay. They ought to simplify the system. There is no reason to need to equip tools, enchant them, and have 5 different qualities of materals, etc.
The system was great - however, it was quite unintuitive for like 99% of the player base. I am giving a vague percent here, but I am basing it off the amount of people (guildies, friends and other random people on the internet) I had to teach during the first month.I did make several gold caps through only one thing - Draconic Vials. Spent a some time on PBE pre-lauch to figure out the optimal skill point distribution to guarantee R3 ore breakdown and R3 vial craft, which was far from rocket science - just needed a few hours to experiment.Launch came - rushed 70, and just pretty much sat at the AH reviewing which materials in the chain to make vials was the cheapest and bought it in bulk. Started out with 700k at start of expand, in just a month made 43m from vials. The fact that i was probably among the first 5 to start jugging out R3 vials at launch is the only reason the above worked out, but hey - you gotta do some prep before you are able to make solid gold in this game.P.S. From all that profit I am currently sitting at around 4m, with the rest going towards my wife's mount collection (bnet balance/mythic boost runs, etc.)
I would say 1/2-3/4 of the work orders I see out there on most of the professions I have on my main and alts - people are hugely undercutting when not providing any mats. It's absolutely sad and ridiculous. Like. I'm not going to make something for you at a loss of both my time gathering the items and the time it took me to max out my professions and specializations. Not sure how people make money off of the work orders, but I've maybe made gold off it less than a dozen times across a dozen characters with any profession in the game. :(
For every expansion, they just dig deeper and deeper when it comes to professions, truly only making them for people that only do profession things in the game. It's horrible. Ranks on mats is trash, work order system is trash, people spamming trade chat is trash, farming profession knowledge is trash, so many useless crafting items no one will use so they are trash. It's too much. Go back to simple - and make all the items that can be crafted matter. No more stupid illusion enchantments that (maybe) only roleplayers might care about.
