Drops rarely from Scorching Elementals in Un'goro Crater. They share a spawn point with the Living Blazes that do not appear to drop the items, so I would recommend killing both mobs.

EDIT as of 10.1.5 this will also drop from Living Blazes, with both mobs having "a significantly increased drop rate"

Get into group and circle around with the group. Fastest way to find them.

Drop rate seems to be around 1-5%. Normally needed 20-30 kills to get one drop. Took me 2-3 hours to get 10 of them.

Took several hours to get the first 12, then the competition for mobs became too much. Switched over to War-mode later in the evening and was the only person farming. Got the last 8 fairly quickly all things considered.

Currently drop statistics are at 32 out of 165,508. Obviously most of those kills were before item was added, drop rate for me seems to be around 3-5% so far. We will see when more drops are logged by wowhead.

Edit: 6 months later, we now have 1369/191547, meaning that 1337/26039 recently recorded kills have dropped, for a drop rate of 5.13%. However, drop rate was significantly buffed from this rate just now.

Edit 2: Looking at drop rates after buff, we have a total of 11207 new kills and 1047 new drops, for a new buffed drop rate of 9.3%

The Sacred Phoenix Ash, in hindsight, definitely alludes to the Arakkoa and their sun bird god... in another world/time being AU Draenor.

Took me about 3 to 3,5 hours to grind all 20.
Submitted a screenshot to show it took roughly 431 elementals to get 20 ash.
5% droprate. Sometimes you get some quickly and other times you just grind for 40 minutes with nothing to show.
Keep it up, you'll get em!

The droprate is very, very, very low - especially accounting for shared spawn points and slow respawn timers. I farmed roughly an hour and never saw one ash drop.

Prospective pet farmers beware, I suppose.

A low droprate and slow spawn rate can be forgiven.

What cannot be forgiven, however, is that every other person and their mother is fighting each other over these spawns, tagging them before you even have the chance to notice a spawn. This is especially bad when the majority of the other players beating you to the punch is that they're on the opposing faction, so you can't even form a party with them.

We're fighting each other over bread crumbs here.

The living blaze mobs in the area share spawns with the mobs needed to drop this item. Kill them to free up spawn space, or else the mountain will only have living blaze mobs and you will take even longer.

Farmed up 8 of these in 2 hours today, during off-hours and on a low-pop shard. I was the only one there for 99% of my grind time. I found circling the base of the volcano with Find Elemental on whilst tagging as fast as any mob spawned was the best way to go. The sole exception is Coursembrase; I left him up in case any questers came by. While the Brasier vivants don't drop the item, they share a spawn with the Elémentaire de brûlures that do and so killing the Blazes is an investment in the next pass around. I had several rounds where every single mob was a Living Blaze, and no rounds where more than 5-6 were Scorching Elementals.

When I checked the area on a high-pop server, there was a group of people camping a single spawn point - at every single spawn point. This grind is miserable, and very much one of those "set your alarm for 3 AM" type deals if you're dead set on getting the pet week 1.

This farm is a very low ROI for your time, as the xmog greens that dropped while I was farming were also worth very little. We can only hope that, because the pet is locked to a specific TW raid, the frenzy will die off relatively quickly after the raid has rotated out. Put on a podcast or a Netflix series. You're going to be here for a while.

Edit: I completed the grind today after another roughly 2.5 hours, making this a 4.5 hour farm with little to no competition factored in. According to early Wowhead stats, that's fairly unlucky. The best thing you can do for your sanity is to make sure you separate yourself from everyone else. Farm in the off hours, go into War Mode, and head to low-pop shards. You do not want to be fighting for mob spawns on this one.

I farmed for 4 hours, with a group of 5, killed alot of them, and got 8...yes 8! Seriously, WTF! Then they make it cageable, which means the bots will beat you to most of them cause it is selling for so much on AH, but hey, no sweat for them, they aren't wasting their time trying to get a pet that they are actually gonna keep!

I put in a bug report, a suggestion in game and a forum post on how BORING and TEDIOUS this grind is on live right now. Has to be bugged. Adds no value to the game in it's current state. Competing for tags, on shared spawn one-shot low level mobs and a horrendous drop rate. Yeah no thanks I don't care about the pet anymore, will finish getting it once they fix this stupid drop rate.

Holy cow this was a !@#$ farm.

Abysmal drop rate.
Tonnes of people farming it.
Shared spawn with a mob that doesn't even drop the item you need.
Can't invite cross faction people in open-world because Blizz still hasn't enabled that for some stupid reason.
You can go 40-50 kills with zero drops.
Only one farm spot in the entire game.

What a recipe for disaster this was. Just terrible. The only feasible way to do this was to get into a dead shard with a couple other people and chase away anyone who dared to infringe on your territory. This was by far the worst part about getting this secret pet. This is how Blizz puts toxicity in the game. This is not a player problem. This is a Blizz problem.

Secret stuffs were always fun to find and to the puzzles and everything, this was just a massiv pain and now I need to play something else cos my brain hurts from circling in ungoro for 13 hours.

The low drop rate + the low spawns + everyone and their mother farming it so you can't get a kill + the other mob sharing a spawn time that DOESN'T DROP IT. It's disgusting. Idk who at Blizzard thought this was a good idea. Why couldn't this item drop from EVERY fire elemental if it was going to be such a low drop rate? Or why couldn't they let it drop from both types of elementals with it being a guaranteed drop from the boss NPC? So many questions.

I've killed 53 scorching elementals and not a single drop, I feel like I'm being had.

Edit: at 73 kills, a drop! Holy this is gonna be a tiresome grind.

Edit 2: ended up having to switch to a dead RP server on WM on to complete this. After roughly 3 hours it's over.

I've collected a small data set of 30 respawns for campers. Brasier vivant and Elémentaire de brûlure spawn approximately 50:50 (my ratio is 14 LB:16 SE). The corpse despawn is 32-38 seconds and I estimate the respawn timer is 4m45s to 8m00s (my data range is 4m47s to 7m48s). I'm a filthy casual so camping is much easier & relaxing for me than zooming around and missing tags. I didn't miss a single one by camping, but this 30 respawns took just over 3h and I looted a grand total of one Cendres de phénix inertes. At that rate it will be 60h of played time to get the required 20 for Phénix ailes-à-vœux. In fairness I collected this data on a full EU server with Warmode off, on the first Sunday of the Cata timewalking week after this pet was discovered, meaning any and every pet collector is in Un'Goro. In other words this is a worst case scenario.

How to get the pet:

Step 1: Before you start, make sure you have done the Worlds of Draenor campaign quest at least 5/9. You can check from this achievement Travailler d’arak-pied. You can also confirm this by going to 52,40 in Flèches d’Arak and check if you can see Zektar. If you can see him, go to step 3. If not, go to step 2.

Step 2: Head over to coordinates 37,18 in the northern part of Flèches d’Arak and find Azik, who will give you the quest Les ombres de Skettis. Keep doing the quest chain until you are at least five out of nine from the campaign quests, where at that point you will have Anzu give you the quest Le culte des corborateurs. Go through the questline until you get to the quest Une audience auprès du grand corborateur, which will take you to visit Zektar and you are now able to purchase items from him. Now that you know you can see Zektar, it’s time to start the grind!

Step 3: To purchase the Talisman de cendres de phénix from Zektar you need one Braise de phénix étincelante, 20 Cendres de phénix inertes and 10 Cendres de phénix sacrées.
Braise de phénix étincelante - You can only get this item when the Cataclysm Timewalking is active. Find a raid group for Terres de Feu and defeat Alysrazor, who will drop the Braise de phénix étincelante for everyone in the raid group. No previous quests are needed to get the item.
Cendres de phénix inertes - This item drops from Elémentaire de brûlure at Fireplume Ridge in the center of Cratère d’Un’Goro. You are going to need 20 of these and unfortunately, the drop rate for this item is pretty low. Ideally you join a group and everyone can loot each other’s mobs. The Elémentaire de brûlure shares its spawns with Brasier vivant, so make sure you kill both.
Cendres de phénix sacrées - Head back to Flèches d’Arak and look around for cookpots around the area, and you will find the Cendres de phénix sacrées inside of the cookpot. These have a respawn timer of between 15 to 30 minutes, so if you don’t really want to be flying around empty cookpots, just sit and wait for the ash to respawn in a cookpot and keep doing this until you have all 10.

Step 5: Next you need to collect 20 Plume cendrée and 15 Cendres de phénix incandescentes from the Rivages de l’Éveil.
Plume cendrée - To see these items, go to Eskrokar and purchase Amulette à plume cendrée. Using this item will give you a 1 hour buff enabling you to see Plume cendrée on the ground close to Oisillon de lave and Phénix de lave.
Cendres de phénix incandescentes - These drop from Oisillon de lave and Phénix de lave in the Rivages de l’Éveil. Item is a bit of a rare drop so be ready to dedicate some time farming these.
Tip: Purchase the Amulette à plume cendrée before you start farming the Smoldering Phoenix Ash and collect the Ash feathers at the same time.

Step 6: Once you finally have all the items, that is, 1 Talisman de cendres de phénix, 15 Cendres de phénix incandescentes and 20 Plume cendrée, head over to Tarjin l'Aveugle all over to the west side of the Rivages de l’Éveil, coordinates 16,62, where he will have a quest called La légende du phénix, which will give you the pet in exchange for the items you collected.

And gratz! You’ve got yourself the Phénix ailes-à-vœux pet!

As other comments have noted here, very low drop rate and not worth doing if there are other people farming. Luckily today I had the place to myself. My tip is of you are on PVE server, turn war mode on and v.v. Also relogging after each farming run really improves drop rate. It took me 3 hours to get 3 with WM off and not relogging. Once I put WM on I got to 16 in another 2 hours. Finally, when I relogged twice I got the remaining 4 in a little under 15 minutes.

There are some ways to make the farming less painful.
First, invite others who are farming to a group. The individual drop rate is the same whether one person kills the Scorching Elemental, or two, or five. You still get one ash in 20 kills on average, but the kills come much faster with a group. I've seen raid groups as well, but I don't have experience with them.
Fan out. If you spot a scorcher, kill it, ping, and put a raid marker on the ground by it. (If you're lucky enough that nobody else is farming them, you can ping first.) If anyone comes to a marked spot with no body, they remove the mark.
Major bonus points if you're all on Discord, or like to type. My group had a great time reminiscing about doing the Un'Goro quests, farming Essence of Fire there, and so on.
Now the sneaky bonus tip: If you don't have a friend on a low-pop server, get one to make an account on one. As it happens, my wife has characters on Lightninghoof, a low pop server. She invited me to a group, and we spent an hour farming with zero competition. I got 16 inert ash, and she got 12, in that time. (RNG still applies.)
As an additional bonus, we also found a lot of vendor trash, and a few specials. She looted Bloodrazor, which auctions for 60K gold on some servers. I found a couple of boe blues, and lots of greens to vendor.
On a low-pop server, especially with a friend, you can complete this part of the quest in two hours, while also getting some gold. That's quicker than an evening raiding, so this isn't as long and painful as it seems.

Thought I'd add a comment based on my experience.

- Cendres de phénix inertes drops from Elémentaire de brûlure located around Fire Plume Ridge in the Un'Goro Crater zone.
- Elémentaire de brûlure shares a spawn with Brasier vivant.
- Brasier vivant do not drop Cendres de phénix inertes.
- Respawn time for these mobs seems to be around 5-7 minutes.
- From my experience, Brasier vivant has a slightly higher chance to spawn than Elémentaire de brûlure, but not by much.
- It took me approximately 3 minutes to do a full clear of Fire Plume Ridge killing everything.
- On average, I looted one Cendres de phénix inertes every two clears. I believe the drop rate is around 5% going my my own and other's experience.
- It took me around 4 hours to get all 20 Cendres de phénix inertes needed for the Phénix ailes-à-vœux. I did this only during the times I had no competition.
- If you arrive at Fire Plume Ridge and you have competition, just come back another time. It's not worth the frustration and extra time.

This grind was the worst part of getting the pet in my opinion. There's a multitude of reasons for this that come together including:
- low drop rate
- shared spawns with a mob that can't drop it
- long respawn time
- high quantity needed
- low-level mobs creating competition

I hope if there's something similar in the future, lessons are learned.

I'm here to help. First, this grind is painful but there are ways to take this from a 10 hour solo grind to about 2 hours. The trick is that for every member you have in your party, you will reduce the time farming by about 2 hours. So if you have a full 5 man group this will only take about 2 hours thanks to personal loot. So if you aren't the social type, either enjoy your 10 hour solo farm or it's time to make friends.

I used the following macro to make my targeting easier:

/castsequence reset=combat Shadow Word: Pain, Holy Nova

This allowed me to target either the Scorching Elemental or the Living Blaze if it was alive. Then I would cast my instant one-shot spell. If still in combat after that, then my AOE spell to kill the no-see-ums aka the critter that decided to attack my ankles.
I have mount on a key as well. So as soon as this is done, cast my mount and ride around looking for more. Just be careful as this will dismount you to cast. As I was doing this on a priest, I have levitate on a key bind as well should I start to fall too far.

Note that using the Ash Feather Amulet in this area allows you to gather the Ash Feathers. I have been able to gather over 20 Ash Feathers during the time I have been farming for the Inert Phoenix Ash. I suggest doing these at the same time.

I'm more unlucky than most. 567 kills to get my 20 ash. One thing to do to speed up the whole process is to roll a druid on a small-pop roleplaying realm. RP realms don't share with other realms for old content (as of this writing, everything aside from Dragon Isles and the capital cities). I was able to make loops every 7 minutes killing an average of 20 adds per loop!

If the mobs respawned faster, yeah, I'd stick to the farm for longer periods. But right now, I've been getting 1-2 drops when I decided to log in on the character I'm getting the pet. So far, it hasn't been THAT frustrating, as with people trying to park the mountain non-stop, waiting for respawns. Little by little I'll get the pet.

Somehow the droprates, which are indeed abysmal, to me it doesn't seem too bad. Pretty much every time I log on to do a round of farm around the mountain, I get at least 1, sparsely during the days. Log> Clear, while looting > Log Off, to do other stuff on other toons.

It seems as if the item has an internal cooldown of sorts, for the drops. Like You drop one, you won't get another within, let's say, 30 minutes, no matter if you kill 500 in the meantime, but if you do a loop killing all, then continue only 30 minutes after, you'd get 1-2 drops again on that next first loop again. Just a theory.´

Also... KILL THE DAMN Brasier vivant TOO. You'll spend much more time trying to kill only the mobs that drop this. The other one DOES SHARE SPAWN with them.

Decided to farm some during this off-week (no timewalking at all). Item still drops, just at a terrible rate. Took me about 20-25 kills to get my first one. Gotta stay strong, get that bird!

I agree with Sarthorius that there seems to be an internal drop cooldown. After I got two in a fairly short time, the drops dried up.

LOL listen at everyone fuss about the droprate for this stuff. I got no problem running up and down this mountain again for a few months. In my youth, I had to farm Cœur de feu for some endless Molten Core asshattery and Sauge-argent des montagnes to make all those Potion de soins majeure till I was blue in the face. Do it again? I got no issue with it. It's just muscle memory at this point.

The drop rate has been increased significantly and drops from Living Blaze as well now as of patch 10.1.5. I just farmed the rest of mine in about 20 minutes, and I only had 4. Rejoice!

"Inert Phoenix Ash is now found on both varieties of fire elementals in the area it drops in (was only one type), and at a significantly increased drop rate."

Can confirm - I've gotten 10 so far in about 17 mins.

Edit: After 40 mins I had all 20.

Well, blizzard finally listened and fixed the incredibly low drop rate. All fire elementals (except quest one) drop the ash. I farmed all 20 in less than an hour. Good hunting all!

Is there a prereq to getting the inert ash to drop? I have cleared the place 5 times with no drops at all. Never mind just took a lot longer to farm that then expected.

After the most recent patch (10.1.5), farming this is significantly faster and easier. The drop rate is improved and it drops from both elemental mobs in the area more commonly.

It still takes some time, but it's no longer completely soul-draining.

Since patch 10.1.5 the Inert Phoenix Ash also drops from Living Blaze mobs.
I have got two from them so far, ìt also seems like the droprate has been increased slightly.

I just did this in 10.1.5 - it took just under 1 hour to get 19 on an uncontested shard (WM Off on Illidan surprisingly). I was seeing ~5% drop rate, and it drops from both elemental mobs now as others have said.

Compared to it taking me 30 mins to get my first one before 10.1.5, and other old comments, I'm guessing this grind has been reduced by probably 10x.

First time I came to farm got one ash in about 1.5 hours.... since patch 10.1.5 they increased the drop rate DRASTICALLY, and Living Blaze are also dropping ashes now... I got the 19 I was missing in about 30 minutes of farming (no one was there with me)

Took about 45 minutes to get the requisite 20 Inert Phoenix Ash. Breakdown as follows:

202 total attempts
10.1% drop rate
11.5% drop rate if you exclude the luckiest and least lucky capture (1 and 44, respectively)

In any event, the drop rate seems to have come up a lot in the patch. Also of note is that the Ash Feather's were present here too. Goodluck, Adventurers!

Wow! I read that the droprate is increased, then go and start farming the adds only to get my first drop after a minimum of 100 killed elementals. The spawnrate is still bad, I have to spend time before all adds are respawned.
Prepare for a full day of grind (minimum) before you get 20.

Edit: After the first drop things sped up dramatically. After less than an hour I am done with the grind. As other people suggest there is some hidden cooldown that slows the drop rate but then all of a sudden you get 2-3 drops within 10 kills.

Drop rate so much better now! Here are my stats, with each round of clearing taking about <5 minutes on a druid. Key to note I was the only one farming the mobs there as well!

Round 1: 3
Round 2: 2
Round 3: 6
Round 4: 4
Round 5: 4
Round 6: Killed 10 elementals before 1 dropped

Waited around 5 minutes to make sure everything respawned before starting a new round, but you could probably wait less :) Atb!

I just did this farm at 5am~ server time (any time can work, basically whenever you're the only one around). It took me 30-40 minutes to get all 20 on my druid.
