Pick-Pocketing Heavy Junkboxes
I'm assuming by this stage that you're already at the top of Honoured with
Ravenholt
via killing mobs in
Arathi
, as this guide is specifically only relevant from Revered up. If not, I recommend going back and killing things until you are. Except in the unlikely event of heavy competition, killing the mobs is a far easier and quicker way to get rep than the
Junkbox
run. I'm also going to assume that you know where the repeatable
quest
is to hand in the Junkboxes, as the information is readily available, I'm just focusing on tips for procuring the boxes rather than the ins and outs of the full Ravenholdt grind.
Firstly: Learn to love
Lower Blackrock Spire
- Seriously. It might help you preserve some of your sanity by the time the grind is through. (Disclaimer: It probably won't). LBRS seems to be the best place to farm the boxes by a considerable margin, and also has semi-decent loot if you're so inclined to stop and pick it up.
The entrance to Blackrock Spire
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that if you're going for the Insane title then you're probably a little bit like me: a slightly OCD completionist. If you're not, may I humbly suggest you run now and don't look back. This is not the grind for people with limited patience. Much of the time the only thing keeping you going during the long winter nights of grinding is the obscure sense of satisfaction that comes with low level obsessive compulsive disorder.
Before you begin, if you don't have a Rogue, get one. Then make sure it's near level 85 for maximum ability to walk under the noses of level 58 elites without them noticing. Some people pay an average of around 10g per box and get other players to pickpocket for them, but I suspect there will be few people willing to do that these Cataclysmic days when there are much easier ways of making gold.
Ravenholdt Manor, nestled in the hills of north-eastern Hillsbrad Foothills
So, with the formalities dispensed with, let's get on to the maths.
The most
Junkboxes
you will ever need to farm is 1,400 (21,000 rep needed at 75 rep per 5 box turn-in). That's for those unhappy souls who have no rep boosting abilities or associations. If you're in that category (i.e. non-human and in a pre-level 4 guild), good luck. For the others, which should be mostly everyone, the number will drop in the following way:
1. Base number -
1,400
2. With
Mr. Popularity
(rank 1/guild level 4) -
1,335
3. With
Mr. Popularity
(rank 2/guild level 12) -
1,275
4. Humans (with
Diplomacy
) -
1,275
5. Humans with
Mr Popularity
(rank 1) -
1,220
6. Humans with
Mr Popularity
(rank 2) -
1,170
Now, I'm working to a figure of 23 boxes per run because, surprise surprise, that's how many I've averaged doing my own grind.
So with that in mind, it'll take approximately the following amount of runs depending on your situation:
1.
61
(non-humans without guild perks)
2.
59
(non-humans with low level guild)
3.
56
(non-humans with mid level guild)
4.
56
(humans without guild perks)
5.
54
(humans with low level guild)
6.
51
(humans with mid level guild)
Being human is looking pretty good right now, with an average advantage of 10 fewer runs. That adds up to a substantial amount of time, depending on how you choose to do the run. Personally, I pickpocket, kill and then loot everything that moves, so my runs take about an hour (factoring in the obligatory pauses for guildchat). Of course step 2 and 3 aren't necessary if you're only interested in the
Junkboxes
, in which case it should take about half that time to do the full dungeon, but I find this helps break the monotony. Plus, there's an average of about 225 pieces of
Runecloth
and nearly 20 green items to be had per run, which can be quite profitable - especially if you get something that's popular for transmogging.
Tips for the run:
• Use the following macro, or one very much like it, and bind it to your stealthed action bar: #showtooltip Pick Pocket /console autoLootDefault 1 /cast Pick Pocket; Pick Pocket (Credit to '
Annoying
' at MMO-Champion) It will save a surprising amount of time by not having to click each mob and manually grab the loot - this works on mouseover and turns on autoloot.
• The
Glyph of Pick Pocket
is an absolute *must*. It doubles the distance you can work from, saves time, and cuts down on accidental aggroes.
• But, there's always those times that we do step just a little bit too close, or forget that there's a campfire in the middle of the group (Don't step in the fire!), so in those instances
Vanish
is your friend. It's better to stealth out and let them reset rather than killing them un-pickpocketed.
• If you are killing them after, make sure you have
Blade Flurry
or similar on, which will save a lot of time. And towards the end make sure you kill the
Bloodaxe Warmongers
first - and quickly! - as they're liable to call help and drag in a group you haven't had a chance to pick pocket yet.
• There's a total of 266 pick-pocketable mobs according to my count - steal from them all! This figure includes the 13 outside the instance (but not the 2 up near the orb of command, which is too much of a detour), the extra 20 in the first room of Upper Blackrock Spire (but don't bother going any further), the two extra that appear after
Overlord Wyrmthalak
is killed, and is +/- 4 depending on silver-rare spawns.
• Aggro a large group and hit
Killing Spree
, while having
Blade Flurry
active - it's funny. :)
• If you're planning on looting I'd recommend having bag space for 100 items, unless you want to be stopping every other minute to ditch vendor trash. I have four
Illusionary bags
and allocate one for the cloth, one for the boxes, one for greens and one for trash that's worth keeping to sell once you're out (averaging 40g per run) - but then, I'm an order freak...
• If you steath and time it well you can slip through both groups of spiders without aggroing them.
• Ideally you'd be an Engineer who can plant a
Moll-E
mailbox or
Jeeves
to sell off stuff in between runs. Non-Engineers would do well to make use of the
Argent Squire
(with
Pony Bridle
),
Guild Herald
, or at a pinch, the
Tundra Mammoth
once you're outside the instance. Otherwise you'll be doing a lot of runs between the nearest settlement and Blackrock Mountain. This is also applicable when you're handing in, if you're using your Rogue to mail the boxes to your main. Planting a mailbox beside the questgiver will save a lot of time, but if you don't have one the nearest mailbox is Chillwind Camp (for Alliance).
Hope that helps and good luck with the grind.
The Questgiver - who doesn't look too happy being pulled away from staring at that painting just so I can give him some old boxes
Edit:
I've since done about a dozen speed runs, pickpocketing only, and have timed each. On average they take 17:30, with the continuing average of around 23 boxes per run. This means, at quickest, the grind will take the following amount of time:
1. Base number - 1,400 boxes -
30.66 hrs
2. With
Mr. Popularity
(rank 1/guild level 4) - 1,335 boxes -
29.24 hrs
3. With
Mr. Popularity
(rank 2/guild level 12) - 1,275 boxes -
27.93 hrs
4. Humans (with
Diplomacy
) - 1,275 -
27.93 hrs
5. Humans with
Mr Popularity
(rank 1) - 1,220 boxes -
26.72 hrs
6. Humans with
Mr Popularity
(rank 2) - 1,170 boxes -
25.62 hrs

Very well written. Thank you for all the info.
Some images would sell this guide better. I think of a pic of Ravenhold mansion and a couple Blackrock mobs being pick-pocketed. =)
As a side note, I'm a order freak too, but I use the addon ArkInventory, with dozen rules it organize my bags the way I want. =)

thanks for the guide, easy and peaceful to read :)
first run 25boxes. but i was able to double pickpocket some mobs... is there a timer for mobs to respawn their pockets, i died once, does it refresh some mobs when you reenter the istance for your corpse?
edit: ye mobs actually refresh after some time so can be double pickpocket, i mean if you have to go afk when you are back is not so much time lost :)

Another tid-bit that helps. When you get to the end of the dungeon, find a corner to stay stealthed in and step away from the computer for about 5 to 10 minutes.
The pockets on the mobs respawn. So you can work your way back out of the dungeon and repick the pockets again.

I've got a level 76 rogue who has a client willing to pay 40g per heavy junkbox. I started the project at level 69. I am currently limited to looting greengill slaves on Quel'danas. I'm not sure how many players would be willing to pay that much to get 1400 of these junkboxes, but it works for me. When I'm finished with this project I intend to finish leveling up to 90 and then go on trade to see if there is demand for this.
