I know players get asked to do some strange things in their time but entrusting the person who recovered the sword to reforge it?

It had better be some kind of magic hammer that tells you how to reforge ancient and powerful elven blades using the infused blood of an Old God or there's going to be a lot of Genuine Imitation Quel'delar's on the AH...

From a fast overlook it seems this quest will bring us through the first dungeons of Icecrown Citadel. As pointed out by "TheAshenVerdict" this could be another infamous lore-packed quest line.

Actualy you can get the saronite bars without running the dungeon, just go in on normal mode and run to your right there should be a little tent there is a spawn there and another one very near it. Collect these then run out and reset and repeat :).

This was the quest of remembering for myself. First, remember to loot all the 5 saronite you need, which are fairly easy to spot items on the floor. Next, remember to loot the hammer from the forgemaster. Finally, remember to use the hammer on THE FORGEMASTER'S anvil with the 5 saronite.

If you're running the whole instance and your group refuses to clear all around the walls for your saronite, there are at least 5-7 stacks around Ick and Krick. Good luck!

As you enter the instance you will see slave workers near Tents to the right and left and down the hill. The Saronite is near the tents. The lootables are glowing with a green aura. You can get all of the Saronite by just killing a few trash mobs. If you do not get them this way there are more by Ick and Krick. Remember you need five.
You kill Forgemaster Garfrost, loot him and take his Hammer
Use the Hammer near the anvil that you will see in the area to rebuild Quel'Delar.

TIP: If you fear your group may have a problem with you getting the Saronite.... (This was also mentioned above by IDestony) just go alone in normal mode and loot the ones near the tents to the left and right. Leave the instance, reset, get a few more. Now you can enter the instance with a group and not need any favors.

Ignore the orange circle designating the quest npc hand in's location. He is at sindragosa's fall where the blade in the ice is located.

Soloed Garfrost today as a Prot pally, If you wish to do this, you can junp in the water to the right of the entrance, and slowly avoid mobs, all you have to kill is one of the Dragon riding Vyrkul, Advised to bring atleast 1 healing pot do to the aoes.

Starts from this chain: Reforging the Hilt, after receiving the Battered Hilt from one of the new ICC 5-man Heroic instances.

This section of the quest chain is acquired from Caladis Brightspear after a lengthy scene between his crew and Blood-Queen Lana'thel, in Quel'Delar's Rest (located just south of the Argent Tournament grounds in Icecrown).

As mentioned above, the 5 Infused Saronite Bars are obtained in the Pit of Saron. They are a square box-like object found around the area just inside the instance; the ones you can loot glow green.

It's not mentioned in the quest text anywhere that I could see, but once completed, you turn this quest in to Caladis Brightspear in Frozen Halls in Icecrown (the chamber with the 3 5-man dungeon entrances)

Infused Saronite can easily be obtained solo with all five crates found in close proximity to the entrance.. no reset required. Solo Garfrost at your own risk. :P

how do you start the quest chain? im standing where the sword is glittering but Caladis isnt offering the quest. im doing this on the alliance side. do i have to have rep with silver covenant or something? im currently neutral

Did this yesterday as a holy pally with a blood DK. The DK was DPS and tank while I healed up a storm. It is true that they suck at holding aggro, so don't be suprised to be taking some damage as healer.

Mobs we killed:
The skeles on the right side, where that pat goes. We found out that pulling a single skele to the edge of that square water-filled hole will keep the pat from aggroing. Do that with the 2 skeles on the platforms. Jump down and kill the skele in that little canyon area. Kill the dragon and his rider where he pats. Kill the Forgemaster.

Strategy:

Have the DK use any spells that generate as much aggro as possible. BoL yourself and heal the DK. As I said, you will be offtanking while you heal. BoL is good for keeping both of your butts alive. If you can't lose aggro when the DK wants it, HoS yourself. Easy way to drop aggro.

At Garfrost, BoL yourself, SS the DK. Let him charge in and start taking the damage. Just a fair heads up, it seems the healer will always be the target of the rock throw. So watch out. While healing, I made sure to hide behind a rock so Permafrost didn't ever get above 8. I also made sure to help DPS the little dudes while Garfrost was playing with his forge. Make sure to refresh your BoL when you can, but only do so when the tank is full of health.

I know it's just an outline, but the more detailed stuff you need to feel and go with. Don't forget your bubble if needed!

Forgemaster Garfrost is indeed solable, as a prot pally at least.

He can be reached without facing any mobs (even the pacing dragons). If you were to fall down into the deep hole in the middle of the instance, while trying to avoid mobs, jump all the way down to the water and walk up, using the tourch-lit path. In such case you will have to kill one patrol and one large skeleton before you're back at the boss.

If you kill the boss, and acquire his hammer, before you collect all the recquired Infused Saronite Bars, you'll have to go back to the boss' anvil again once you have all bars (and likely face the boss again). However, forging the sword, using the hammer and the bars, can't be interupted once started, only suffering a slight, unlimited push back. So, in this case, sneak past all the mobs as before, wait till the boss is to the far left of his area, run to the anvil and start forging, and run all the way out of the instance afterwards, trying to catch as few mobs along the way as possible. This is also possible to do without dying, at least as a prot pally.

IF your a mage and you have the hammer you can actually go invisible and do this yourself if you time it just right on the forge the skeleton and boss both pat away from the forge at the same time. Run up invisible start the forge while invisible then complete the forge. This will deactivate your invisiblitiy and you will aggro the boss and most likely die but hey you have the hammer forged! Collecting the saronite on the other hand is very easy to do alone if you knwo what your doing. Read below.

I was actually able to fly to ICC and go into this instance alone and gather the bars. There are a few of these lingering around that are easy to get to without running into mobs. One is just inside the instance to the right on the edge another is inside to the left on the right side of the ramp that goes down. You cant see it so you have to go over there and get it. Another is also on the left just a little further north of the one I just mentioned. There is one giant skelton guy to the right of it but if your a mage with invisibility you can easily get in there to the left of it and grab it. Then mount up and head for the door. Then just keep going in and back out until your done.

No need to do this whole instance if your looking to quickly get this done. The hammer however falls off the first boss which needs to be done in a group obviously. Rate this up if you find this useful.

i used my cat prowl to get the bars. very easy, the mobs doesnt detect me, while i was reasonable close. when i got the bars i hitted looking for pos and as a tank i got a grp within a minute. i think i could have done the bar gathering while in a grp, but this was ok too.
We had some trouble with the boss (i did it on hc) so for a split second i was thinking abt leaving after forging, but that made me feel bad, so we did the whole instance :)

Didn't want to run the whole dungeon, so I tried to solo this as a 4.8k GS/40k HP bear tank.

His physical hits, combined with saronite throws (which are pretty much unavoidable) and the DoT stacks makes him pretty much impossible for any non-ubergeared tank to solo, unless they are a prot pally or (possibly) a blood DK due to self-heals. Most classes are going to need a friend or two. Learn from my mistakes so you don't find yourself running for your life only to die at the bottom of the pit in the middle of the instance. /cough

It can be done on normal.

EDIT: Got a shaman from my guild to help kill. He pulled about 4.9k DPS while keeping me healed (that's good, if you didn't notice). Managed to take him down without a problem.

If you are a Rogue, you can solo this after you get the hammer in a group. I went in Normal on my own and got the 5 bars( had to go out and re-set instance to come back to make it 5 total), did the 5 man group to get the hammer and went back in Normal. I went in Stealth to the forges and when the Guard skeleton and the Boss separated, I clicked on the hammer and it forged quickly. The Other skeleton and the Guard and Boss attacked me and I used Vanish and they left me. I continued to walk out of the instance and turned in the quest right outside the entrance to the Pit of Saron. I do not see a way to get the hammer without a group, but all else you can solo if you can stealth, so I guess a Druid could use the same method as I did, but would die without Vanish after the forging.

Thought my Druid might need to reset the instance to get all the bars but I found there are 5 locations, all within a short range of the starting area. It probably isn't possible without invisibility, but there are 3 locations close enough to the entrance such that you should be able to get all 5 bars with only one reset.

I applaud anyone who can solo Garfrost. I didn't even try. While getting my last bar, I accidentally aggroed one of the elite skeletons, who one-shotted me in cat form with 24.7K health and 8.5K armor. I figured that didn't bode well for a solo fight against Gar, but I'm sure you'll have no trouble doing this in a group.

As of 4.2 I was able to solo this as a arcane Mage. I'm currently in full 372 Firelands gear.

All I did was mount up and run to the bosses stairs and pop invisibility to get ride of the aggro on the trash that I had collected. Once there I killed one skeleton forgetting that it aggros the boss and just decided to pop all my CDs and just dpsed the boss letting my mirror images hold aggro on the adds. He got one of the stuns off so I just iceblocked and continued dpsing until he was dead. I even got the doesn't stack to eleven achievement at the same time.

We cannot allow Quel'Delar to remain broken and disgraced. Take the remnants of the sword, along with the battered hilt you discovered, and venture into the Pit of Saron within Icecrown Citadel.

In the pit, the Lich King uses slaves to mine, process, and transform saronite ore. This infused saronite is what we will use to rebuild Quel'Delar.

You must gather bars of infused saronite and capture the forgemaster's hammer, then bring them to the forgemaster's anvil and reforge the sword.
