Quite simple, do the instance like normal, then after you kill the last boss, use the item at the fancy fireplace behind him.

Run Forge of Souls Normal or Heroic
Kill final boss and use the item at the crucible or as @saberoy said "the fancy fireplace".
Important Note: The turn in to this quest is outside of the instance in one of the halls leading to the instance stone. This will give you the follow up to just turn around and run Halls of Reflection (No, not Soloable that I can see)

I ran the series of quests for the ICC attunement. We did the series on heroic so we wouldn't have to worry about regular versions. While doing so, I was working on the Battered Hilt quest chain. Due to the nature of the chain you have to do Pitt of Saron first, before you can complete this quest; however, due to the attunement requirements, you have to do Forge of Souls in order to unlock Pitt. This led me to believe that this chain would take more than one day, but after completing all three dungeons, I managed to convince the group to go back to Forge of Souls in hopes of just being able to clear trash and using the quest item at the crucible. After clearing trash, we made it to the location of the first boss, and it was still dead and the body had despawnd. After clearing the remaining trash we made it to the room where the crucible is located, and we found the Devourer of Souls had respawned. Thinking he must be part of the chain, we killed him, and he ended up dropping more loot. Got to loot the boss twice in the same night.

Any ideas if this working as designed or a possible glitch. I've completed the chain, so I have my weapon, but will run the chain as needed for guildies. I just want to make sure this isn't going to turn into something that can be twisted into a possible exploit.

Rogues can complete this quest by themselves on normal. I stealthed all the way to the boss, garroted then vanished, and used the item on the now active crucible.

Mages can solo this as well! Simply skip everything with Invisibility and stop and wait for CD a few times, when you reach last boss, pull him and use invisibility, after you're out of combat simply dismiss the buff and use the quest item. Easy as pie.

MAGES- Can easily solo this with invisibility. just like kri4o said, i would get the major glyph of invisibility to add and extra 10 sec. or invisibility. piece of cake though. the fire is right behind the last boss. just agro him and pop invisibility and click of the buff and you have about 10 sec. till boss respawns on top of you.. VERY EASY.. TY

Just stealthed in at normal; easy, no stealth detection mobs, garrote the last boss, and vanish, waited a few sec, leaved combat and used the q-item, and i got it.

Just did this solo today as a mage. You need to engage him for about 5 or so seconds or until you see the Crucible of Souls. It's best to aggro him from the top of the platform behind him and run to the opposite side that he is coming from. Use invisibility/vanish/shadowmeld or w/e you can to leave combat. Use your item to complete the quest!

i just did it today on my rogue, i stealthed the whole way to the boss and ambushed than vanished and completed the quest you do not need a group if you can get your self out of combat...

Same thing on my rogue, just do some damage, vanish and then finish the quest, but make sure your vanish is not on cooldown when you click on it.

Took my druid 3 deaths, but I finally got it accomplished. The problem I had was that you can't just aggro him and then shadowmeld. You apparently need to aggro him, then run around (trying to stay out of range of his shadowblasts) for some period of time (which could be 10 seconds?) until the crucible appears, THEN shadowmeld. You can then go to the crucible and complete the quest, at which point the Devourer will one-shot you yet again (and I was in bear form...) but by then you're done.

This can be done on a druid that isn't alliance. Stealth to the platform behind him, moonfire, cat form and dash... run around and the crucible appears... die... restealth in... stand right at the crucible and then use the item and die again =)

you can do it by never aggroing boss by stealthing to where the portal to pos and use the item from there.

Rogues in WOTLK classic (a decent candidate for the ilvl251 1h sword) can still solo this using techniques posted here years ago. To reiterate:

1. Stealth to last boss
2. Garrote, then vanish instantly
3. Use the quest item while standing next to the brazier which appears directly behind the boss.

At last, the pieces of Quel'Delar are rejoined and the blade is whole, but it cannot see battle until you have tempered it. That jagged saronite edge is brittle and will shatter the moment it strikes anything.

Deep in Icecrown Citadel's Forge of Souls is a place where the blade can safely be tempered. Take Quel'Delar with you to the abode of the Devourer of Souls and look for the crucible. Plunge the blade into the crucible to temper it and bring it back to me in The Frozen Halls.
