The first recipe is available from a neutral vendor. The second two are available from Horde vendors. None of them are quest-only.

The point about single-side, quest-only recipes is that each toon of that side gets only one chance to obtain the recipe. Recipes available from vendors can be bought in higher quantities, and sold across the neutral AH. But for a recipe from a quest to show up on the neutral AH, a player will have to decide that they never want to learn that recipe on that toon. Multiples can only be obtained by making toons solely for the purpose of farming the recipe, then deleting them. This makes the single-side, quest-only recipes significantly harder/more expensive to obtain on the opposite faction.

This recipe still exists! Location: Northern Barrens, roughly 55.4, 61.3 inside a short tower of sorts, and sold by an npc by the name of Grub.

I went to check out Prospector Khazgorm to see if he was really gone. He was gone, however upon busting out a Divine Storm in a group of six-or-so Excavation Raiders at the two tents in Bael Modan Excavation site I managed to loot Recipe: Dig Rat Stew.

It's still BoP, but atleast it's still here.

And now I'm an Iron Chef.

Can anyone confirm if it drops from the Foreman and Excavators? I'm phased and my main is a Rogue I haven't been able to draw the Rifleman/Officers out of the keep without it phasing back.

4.2 Update!

Alliance:
You can now kill The Excavation Raider's and as they are low lvl and have a good respawn rate it took me 10 min to get the recipie, easy one to do!

the mobs also drop savory delight.

4.2 Udpate!

Horde:
Recipe can be looted from :Bael'dun Officer, Bael'dun Rifleman, Bael'dun Soldier at Bael'dun, but there is the problem for people wich already made quests there, beacouse those mobs will disapper if you will reach Beal'dun zone.
However there are two easy tactics how to get this recipe:

- get friend wich one didint made those quests and lure mobs downhill, so you can already kill them (of corse not at Bael'dun zone or dead bodys will disapper)
- use long distance non-dmg spells, or pets (I am Warlock - used spell lock spell) , to lure some mobs from Bael'dun arena, to make them out of this zone

After killed like 10 mobs I got recipe, and Iron chief achivement :D

Spent about 45 mins killing Excavation Officers, Soldiers and Riflemen at Bael Modan (48.6, 88.8) until I got the recipe to drop. It's a BOP now, so you're not gonna be able to AH it. Just be patient, took about 2 to 3 respawns of the soldiers in the fortress to get it to drop. The bonus was I also got to gank a DK and Druid while I was waiting.

I have been farming this recipe for 4 days about 2 hours a day. I am about to give up on it. I think it is a myth.

Don't give up..I just found it-took about 5 minutes to do a full run being sure to kill all the Bael'dun npcs inside the fort. It does not drop off the guys at the dig site (excavators), it drops from the soldiers etc inside the fort at the digsite. If you can't see the right mobs, it's because you have done the quests involving blowing up the fort, and you will need to party up with someone who hasn't done the quests yet and have them lure the mobs out to you, so they become unphased, killable, and lootable by you.

OK I tried farming for this recipe today, I killed over 20 Bael'dun excavator at the bottom whith no drop. I decide to go up top to Bael'dun Keep and it drop twice.

This may help some Alliance going for this recipe.

I killed probably 50+ Raiders with no drop on the recipe.

The very first Raider that I killed who had no current aggro table dropped the recipe.

By this I mean that he was not currently fighting anything and had just spawned. Not sure if it was just my time to find the recipe or if that had something to do with it. Try it out yourself.

This morning I was out taking in the sites when I stopped by Grub. He does now sell the recipe, along with seven Dig Rats! I am not sure if you have to be a certain level but he does have it.

I got the recipe today from a Dwarf soldier!

engineer's use of Loot-A-Rang! It helped me a lot as my
Horde character was phased.

Getting this recipe can be very frustrating process to

Very frustrating to get once you've completed the quest on the horde-side and this zone all phases, however I did note theres one area you can stand, the two towers, the one that points like an arrow, stand on the tip of it and you'll find theres a few phased mobs that you can pull, and one that pats right to you. He (the soldier that pats) just dropped my dig rat recipe :) Happy hunting

The drop rates posted look pretty low, but it's actually a lot better than Wowhead suggests. The current counts may include kills from previous patches where the mobs did not drop the recipe at all. So it would take time to work out the difference. The recipe also won't drop at all if you've already learned it, or even if you already have it in your inventory. So a lot of people who have it already and continued to kill mobs would drive Wowhead's posted drop rates even lower.

I farmed this on 6 different characters and I got the recipe in under 15 min for each, and that's counting my Belves who had to deal with the phase bug.

As always drop rate is pretty RNG, Took some time to get mine. Exact time or kills I do not know but I did end up with 68 Silk cloths in my bag before the recipe dropped of Bael'dun Rifleman.

Rogue Horde 85 Confirmed - after doing all quests - brought mobs to the end of the platform outside the castle entrance 48.87 - 87.23 where it turned into Bael Modan Excavation - after about 50 mobs / 20 min - dropped from an Officer

I just got it on my horde toon, I had a friend kite the dwarfs out of the keep since I was phased about 20 kills he got it before I switched loot to free for all on the 3rd kill woot iron chef!

Confirmed that this is still available to alliance players as of 4.2.2. It is commonly one of the last few that people need to complete their Iron Chef achievement. Kill the Excavation Raiders until it drops, does not take long to farm given they are low-level mobs and have a fast re-spawn timer. It took me less than 5 minutes before the recipe dropped (20 kills or so).

im a priest that is phased, so i mc the riflemen to aggro others, can get about 6 at a time and then mc one at the bottom of the ramp for a 7th. killed around 200 by now, still no recipe, my luck sucks. to bad i need this for my 200th.

Ok, I was farming this recipe inside Bael Modan (south barren)for about 1hr and out of boredom I killed one those dig rats. The rat dropped when you pick it up and click on it, it tells you to cook it in order to learn the recipe of Dig Rat Stew, so I set up my fire, cooked it and the recipe was added to my list, I didn't have to pick it up and it did count towards Iron Chef Achiev(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##

Someone mentioned getting this off a dig rat mob, which is where I got it. I was wiping out Bael'dun over and over, and decided to start killing the dig rats too. One dropped a Plump Dig Rat: Plump Dig Rat.

I haven't done the quests in this zone yet, so the mobs were not phased out for me.

Alliance - kill the rats as well and loot them! This recipe dropped for me today (after farming The Excavation Raider's for 2 days with no luck) I started to kill the rats as well and looted a Plump Dig Rat to cook over a fire to learn the recipe. Good luck :)

Patch 4.3 update:
You cannot get this receipt anymore from . I farmed hundrets of these with my level 20 twink with no luck until I read the comments. As a Horde, probably the same applies to the other listed NPCs. I'm not sure about the listed vendor, as I'm not a Horde.

To get this receipt now: You have to farm the Dig Rat. Those rats are in the Bael Modan Excavation site. There are only about 3-4 there and they spawn only every few minutes, but the drop rate is quite high. For me it dropped on the 11th kill. But instead of the receipt, you now get Plump Dig Rat, which you have to cook first to get the receipt.

I can also confirm that the recipe for Dig Rat Stew is now obtained by killing a dig rat and looting the Plump Dig Rat when it's dropped.
I've not research the drop rate frequency but i can tell you that the Plumb Dig Rat was obtained first time.

Make sure you rate these new posts for the 4.3 release up as I did a lot of reading before i came across the previous post.

This recipe is no longer obtained from the excavation raiders here in bael modan for patch 4.3 this now drops from the dig rats you will receive a plump dig rat then you will make a campfire cook it and bam you have your recipe.

This recipe i dont really know if it still drops but you can learn the dig rat stew from an item named Plump Dig Rat that drops from the rat critters that walk around there. Got it just some minutes ago finally got my 200 recipes.
Killed lots and lots of the raiders but nothing then i tested kill the rats and after a big bunch the item droped which you use with a cooking fire and tada!

So this recipe still exist in a way i guess but i would vote for ignore the dwarfs and taurens and kill those little buggers to rats! and you will learn how to cook them ^^

Just wanted to let you all know you can get this recipe from the dig rats, but it comes in the form of a plump dig rat you cook over a fire to learn the recipe. Got it today after 11 dig rats. December 14 2011.

Don't know if the humanoids can still drop it.

I can confirm you can still get this, to learn it you get the drop then you have to cook it to learn it, not like the usual type of recipie.

I was farming the humanoids, they did not drop it for me after approx 200 kills.

Dropped off a Dig Rat, learnt after cooking the Plump Dig Rat over a fire.

DIG RAT RECIPE drops from the RATS! not the raiders....you will get loot of a plump dig rat, just cook it to learn the recipe...after grinding raiders all day I finally got it!

Alrite guys, I am sure lots have already posted this but I am just adding a few words in it.
This is the scenario as of PATCH 4.3 !

According to AckisRecipeList, I farmed 600 s for 1hr & 25 mins, and here is what I got.
Drops in order:

Along with other stuff that dropped:

Wool Clothx33
Silk Clothx207
Mageweave Clothx3
Jadex2
And 5 random greens

Due to an AOE spell that I used, I happened to kill a helpless Dig Rat. It has a 100% chance of dropping Dig Rat. I killed 4 of those, with the 4th dropping Plump Dig Rat. Cook that item with any type of fire(cozy,warm,hot,cooking) and you'll automatically learn the recipe that you wanted at the very beginning.

So, forget about those Excavation Raiders or Bael'dun soldiers, etc. Is just to much work!
The best way to learn this soulbound recipe is to kill those little Dig Rats. I killed 10 of them and after that i looted the "Plump Dig Rat". You need a cooking fire, and that's it !
I posted a screenshot, taken exactly when i looted the rat.

Thanks for the help I found here, guys. After two days farming both raiders and dig rats at Bael Modan the recipe dropped off of a dig rat. Strongly suspect that the Excavation Raiders no longer drop that particular recipe, but killing them passes the time between rats and gained me several copies of Savory Deviate Delight and Elixir of Giant Growth to sell on the ah, as well as greens for d/e.

I can't say anything about whether the recipe drops fromthe Excavation Raiders, because who knows, it might. I spent about an hour killing a few hundred, though, and nothing dropped except a couple of Recipe: Savory Deviate Delight.

However, when I started killing Dig Rats, one (out of eighteen) had a Plump Dig Rat. One cooking fire later and I had learned the recipe.

It took 88 dig rat kills before I received the plump dig rat for this recipe to drop. I also received 9 recipes for savory deviate delight and 4 recipes for giant growth elixir. However I consider it worth it since this recipe put me at 200 and the Iron Chef Achieve.

My experience in - Patch 4.3 playing Alliance

At Bael Modan Excavation, I was killing dozens of Excavation Raiders, cleared the excavation site at least 10 times, no drop.

My profession add-on, Arckis Recipe List, said the Dig Site Rats themselves dropped the recipe, and they do. They drop a 'Plump Dig Rat', which is soulbound. It reads: - "Use: Cook this over a fire to learn the recipe for Dig Rat Stew".

For the Alliance - don't know about Horde but suspect it will be the same.
You now have to kill DigRats on the Bael Modan excavation pit - one will give a 'Plump DigRat' as loot - you cook this as requested and learn the recipe - simples.
Third kill after a couple of hours killng the Tauren Mobs ho hum.

For Alliance. Got this drop today. Killed both the Raiders and the Dig Rats. The recipe dropped from the 15th Dig Rat I killed and looted. Took me about 20 minutes. Good Luck.

The week prior to 4.3, I put in about 20 tickets from various friend's accounts regarding the lack of this recipe's availability, and suggested every single time that the recipe be added as a drop from the Dig Rats themselves, perhaps starting a quest chain. It would seem enough instances of a given suggestion from various people may have Blizzard implement it, assuming it has some form of relevance and common sense to it.

I'm excessively happy (and somewhat flattered ?) that they did that, albeit it might have nothing to do with my perseverance and more to do with their own perception of what made sense. Glad to see my common sense and theirs converge, however...at least on this issue ;)

I farmed Excavation Raiders for a couple hours. Killed hundreds. No Dig Rat Stew recipe. Gave up.

Then read these posts about getting it from the Dig Rats themselves. Went back - on my 43rd dead Dig Rat looting - it looked like a NORMAL Dig Rat, just like the others - suddenly when I looted it, there was a message that this was a PLUMP Dig Rat, and I made a fire, cooked it by clicking on it in my inventory, and magically the recipe appeared in my list of cooking recipes even though I did NOT get the recipe as a normal scroll that you then "learn".

LOOT THE DANG RATS! IT WORKS!

As of 4.3.3, Kill only the Dig Rat's and jump from the outside excavation area to inside the base due to slow spawn rates. You can't "tab" target, gotta search for them like all other pests. On my 21st kill of the Dig Rat I got a Unconscious Dig Rat (which drops a Dig Rat). It took me the 47 Dig Rat kill to get the Plump Dig Rat Recipe. Reading other posts, looks like they lowered the drop rate a tad....

Ok so I just did this today. You go to Bael Modan and kill the rats. It is really easy if you make a target macro. Kill the rats. Pick up the green "Plump Dig Rat," cook it, and you learn the recipe. It is really easy.

The Excavation Raiders no longer drop this. The dig rats are what you need to kill to get this recipe. It's a fast drop, usually 10 or less rats before you get a "Plump Dig Rat" which you can then cook over a fire to learn this recipe.

Yep, keep killing the little Dig Rats and eventually you'll get a Plump Dig Rat drop. Set up your cooking fire, right-click on the Plump Dig Rat, and you'll get Dig Rat Stew added to your recipe list automatically.

In terms of drop rate, I had to kill about 33 rats before I got the drop.

Finally got the recipie after about 80 dig rat kills.

For Alliance, try to avoid doing the local quests until after you get this. After you reach the point where the keep is on fire, the rats on the hill phase out and you will only have the 5 or so left in the pit to farm for this.

I'm still working on getting the recipe, but I got sick of waiting for something very small to appear on the ground so i made a macro to target the dig rats. Much easier to find them. Also i would put a marker on them so i could get to them easily. Hope this helps someone out there!

EDIT: After learning a pattern of where they spawn. I got it after 80 dig rats and 2 unconscious dig rats. Goodluck everyone!

Too bad it's BOP . . . he's so far out there, isolated in the Southern Barrens, as he and the rest of those dwarves are. Not exactly on the beaten path for alliance, even if Bael Modan is fairly close to RFK and RFD.

Finally make this particular recipe available directly to alliance without the AH dance, and the majority of alliance cooks still won't ever see this recipe ;-)

The Horde Quest version is not BoP. So a smart horde player will do the quest and sell the quest version then buy the BoP version to learn the recipe.
